WARNING Dishonest staff - do not stay here

Charged us for a deluxe room and gave us a room 2/3 the size no curtains, no room safe, noisy and not cleaned properly - still half full drink bottles from previous tenant.

Room is bright with high ceilings. Our room was on ground level almost next to reception area. We stayed one night only as our hotel closed due to the government lockdown. Bathroom shower was almost right over the toilet. The whole room was wet every time someone showered. Occasionally, we'd smell cigarette smoke possibly from someone smoking near the reception area. Bed sheets were well worn and doesn't seem clean. Saw a couple of long hairs. Ugh.

Wonderful staff, worst WiFi!

The WiFi was really, really terrible! That alone will prevent me from staying here again. Other than that, love the location and the staff were absolutely superb. A huge thank you to them all! Some gardeners were smoking while working, which is not allowed. Why can’t Malaysians follow simply rules? No hope for the country if this carries on.

The room is not in a very good condition. I have booked 2 rooms. 1 room have problem to enter using the keycard. Then later it does not have any power. Need to change room then after change to another room, the room intermittent power "trip". Need to change room again.
My room initial seems ok. Then out of sudden, there is water dripping from the toilet ceiling. Need to change room.

No fridge and there is not enough space to have a mini table.

The heritage building was in an excellent location - very hip and happening with lots of bars, quaint cafe's and eateries. The venue however was a little run down - not as well maintained as I hoped it would be. My bedroom with fresh linen had traces of hair - of different length on it. The bathroom was clean but the water heater wasn't working so well. As I was on the ground floor, I can hear people moving around above my room.

Do not expect car parking even if you book, I advised I require car parking on arrival as I was driving 600KM from Thailand and this was essential to my stay. When I arrived one of the security/ car park attendants / maffia woman told very rudely the car park was full move my car now and I should of got there earlier and “the Malaysians” beat you to it and laughed. I said can I just stay 5 minutes and check in first and leave my bag in the room and she said no go and pay for parking elsewhere! I stay in up to 50 hotels a year and also own a hotel, this was one of the most disgusting receptions I have ever encountered at any hotel anywhere in the world and ended Ed up parking almost 2km away! Room was fine, terrible WiFi speeds however this is common in Malaysia. I stayed 2 times in 3 days as part of a business trip and left my car where I parked on the first night, when I returned 2 days later she laughed at me saying where is your car?

It isn't as good as it looks on the pictures

Rooms are not sound proof, we could hear everyone in the middle of the night. Receptionist was noisy and laughing even past 12 am in the night. Rooms had no pillowcases in the beginning. Toilets had flies and not the best service.

I wouldn't come back here.

The pillow covers were uncleaned due to the presence of stains and the toilet seat was also stained which probably suggests that it was washed not thoroughly. More could be done to the cleanliness of the room. Also the door can be better maintained. I was slightly disappointed to see the state of the room because my friend recommended this hotel years ago. On hindsight, probably because it was new back then.

Bathroom too cramped.

The bathroom was so cramped that the shower head had to be located on top of the WC. After a shower, everything was all wet. Seems like the hotel is moving towards the "dormitory" type offering with shared bathrooms. I stayed here before and it wasn't like this previously.

Hotel need renovation

The photo shown in the website is totally different with the actual room. The floor and the wardrobe are all wear and tear. The bed sheet is smelly and greyish. It will be more comfortable is the hotel is sound proof. It’s 2am in the midnight and we can still hear a lot of sounds. However, the toilet is clean.

The room is too small and the toilet just able to fit 1 person. bed is uncomfortable and the very hard to sleep. The TV channel is good but the remote control need to 1 hand hold the battery and 1 hand press the button. Basically what you can do is just chills out at the Chullia Street/love lane have dozen of drink then get drunk and go back sleep.

I stayed 5 nights here and it was such a good experience.
The hotel is just a little far away from the road so you will have calm. You do not hear the mosque prayers or cars passing - heaven in Penang.
I had a room on the ground floor with private bathroom and it was very quiet. The room was very clean, with enough space for what i needed. TV with good channels if you wanted to stay in.
The hotel has free bicycles if you want to take and wonder around.
The location is perfect: close to visa services, pubs, coffees places, ATM, bus station, restaurants.
The staff friendly and always smiling.
the only problem i had with internet witch was slow and with ups and down, but then you get out and enjoy the city

Cool place to be if you love Penang heritage!

The place is clean and bright while the receptionists are friendly, very professional and helpful! Felt at home in no time! Our air conditioning was not working and the staff fixed it in no time and even came later to make sure that the problem was fixed. The common bathrooms are very clean and well maintained at all time! We felt like second home though Penang was actually where I was born and bred! Parking too was spacious while the security guard was friendly and I even saw a little girl shaking hands warmly to bade him goodbye like they have been friends all their lives! ! The hotel is right in the heart of Georgetown! Food and shopping are so convenient! I even took the name cards from the counter to share with my friends! I gave the reception a shock when I told them I wanted to complain about the hotel! Then the staff became tense and I simply told them that the place was too nice! Bottom line being this is one of the best simple hotels I have been! Thank you and keep up the excellent services ! My frank and 2 Sen opinion........

Too small of a room

We found the room small and cramped. There was no where to put our suitcase except on the floor and there was little room to walk or turn around. There was no separate shower and the shower nozzle dripped over the toilet and the bathroom area so the toilet and the floor were continually wet. The bathroom counter was too small for even our small toiletries bag. The cover on the bed was grey and dirty looking.

Disgustingly dirty and terrible customer service.

Disgusting! Checked in and the bed had been made but the bathroom hadn't been cleaned at all...I was horrified to find a poo stained towel left behind by the last occupant! I asked reception to send a cleaner. When I returned four hours later it still hadn't been done, so I asked a second time. Not once did I receive an apology, this is terrible and disgusting customer service. When I went to sleep that night I discovered the sheets and bedding hadn't been changed either, the bed had simply been remade!!

2 weeks exploring mainland Malaysia

We first checked into a room with a shared bathroom not knowing that was what we booked and it was awful. Only one electrical socket for a double room - hard when you have 2 cellphones, camera, laptop, batteries, and a go pro. A/C wasn't strong enough and there were cracks around the window. Bathrooms were ridiculous - like 5 stalls shared amongst 15 double rooms?! And it was so wet in there. Just awful.
So we ended up upgrading to a room with a private bathroom which was 100 times better. Privacy, clean, private bathroom, comes with bottled water, on the first floor so you don't need carry all your heavy luggage up a flight of stairs. So much better!

Okay for few days stay

when I first checked in at 6pm the female receptionist wasn't very friendly, thankfully her male colleague turned things around and made it pleasant.

Room size is comfortable size, however it lacks toiletries and a fridge. I had to buy my own shower foam and toothbrush after I checked in.. and couldn't buy any refrigerated drinks because there wasn't a fridge.

the toilet is EXTREMELY SMALL. even for a petite sized person like me. The rain shower head was positioned so close to the sink and toilet bowl that I constantly bumped into either while showering. Plus point was that at least hair dryer was provided.

PLUS POINTS include that it's situated in a very good location. highly accessible to most of the tourist attractions, and good food everywhere!

overall, stay was okay.. might choose a different hotel if ever I come back to Georgetown, Penang.

Bang in the centre of Georgetown, so much live and characters. Truly all cultures going about their own businesses. Temples, Chinese and Indians, Churches and Mosques all in one street. Lots of hawker food and sleazy Bars at night.

the hotel is at a nice location where u can walk around penang street to enjoy penang. the downside is I din notice i booked a shared bathroom room so its not convenient for couples especially females. My room's aircond was broke doen on the 1st night and we had to put up with a stand fan. it took almost 1 whole day to get it repaired and we did not get any compensation for the problem caused to us. Very disappointed with the management.

The hotel cleaning staff was excellent but speaks not a word of english. The rooms and the facilities were very very clean. But the floor boards are very very noisy when you walk on them. Thus if your tenants are an active bunch (eg teenagers on a holiday), you'll never get a good night's sleep or sleep-ins. The shared bathrooms are very warm with small teeny windows. So dressing After your shower, before you step out, will already leave you perspiring profusely. However, the location is fantastic. Night markets and eateries at yr doorstep. Bus stops right out front. Perfect.

The stay was a horrible experience! Sound proof was bad (we could hear loud noises from the outside) and there were bed bugs in the room! Extremely disgusting and cannot be forgiven. We booked 2 nights but we couldn't stand it and left immediately after the first night. The room was dirty and uncomfortable, which made us fell really really sick after the first night. Will never recommend this to anyone and will never come back anymore!

Great stay for budget rate

Booked via on line. On arrival date, check in was easy and smooth. Staff very polite and handleld guests with courtesy. They assisted us for special request for attached bathroom. Room is clean and white in color. Look like a luxury stay. Rented bicyles and roamed around city. Located nearby hawker stalls and heritage spots. Good location, clean and smart hotel. Room with no view was not a problem as it presented well. Unfortunately our room on the ground floor had glass panels above the door from the main lobby so at night the room didn't get dark as the panels couldn't be covered. Sound of people walking in room above could also be quite clearly heard at night but we may have just been unlucky with who was above us. Would definitely recommend as good value for the price, maybe just avoid ground floor budget rooms with panels above the door.

We had the deluxe room (108) and we found it very big and clean. But at night the lights on the outside of the room shine so bright trough the white blinded windows that you can read a book. So if you can't sleep with the lights on, don't take this room. The bed was great, the shower and bathroom awesome. The hotel looks nice and the white in- and exterieur looks nice but it could really use some colour.

It was a great pleasure to be recommended this nice and beautiful hotel (Chulia Heritage Hotel) in heart of Penang UNESCO Heritage Site of Georgetown (at No: 380, Chulia Street, 102000, Penang).

From the moment we arrive at the main entrance, the "doorman" security personnel was approachable but alert. He was also helpful.

Most helpful of all, was the reception desk personnel- they gave invaluable advice on the room, tour packages in the City and all the useful information.
Check-in was efficient and we were taken personally to Room 121 - very cosy and clean.

The attached bathroom and toilet was also superb - clean towers with excellent bathing facilities.

The deal came with complimentary wifi and also more than a dozen channels on the flat screen television.

Layout of the room was also very cosy with air-conditioning unit which is silent and well maintained.

All in all, we are delighted with the services and the room and facilities for a heritage hotel with the excellent service staff.

We felt very welcomed by the warm hospitality and with the comfortable room, really enjoyed our stay at this well-maintained, clean and safe environment.

I would strongly recommend to my friends and contacts to stay in the wonderful hotel."

Would not book again.

While the hotel was ok for the cost per night it offered very little apart from location. The room smelt bad, there were no towels or power adaptors on arrival even though they were advertised in the room. The couple of free TV channels had poor reception and the toilet, toilet paper and sink all got wet while showering. Hotel staff were extremely noisy from around 8:00am even though they give you a 12pm check out. All up, very disappointing.
