A Perfect Stay at 23 Love Lane

My husband and I had an amazing stay at 23 Love Lane. We arrived hours before check-in, and the staff were incredibly accommodating, storing our luggage while we explored and preparing our room early.

Set in a beautifully restored colonial-era building, the hotel blends British, Indian, and Chinese influences with antique furnishings and contemporary art. Our room was a perfect mix of mid-century modern décor, wooden floors, and a large, comfy bed.

The location is ideal, within walking distance of famous street art, restaurants and night markets, Chinatown, Little India, historic jetties, and the esplanade. Though in a lively area, the hotel’s lush gardens offer a peaceful retreat, where we enjoyed reading and enjoying the company of Orange and Mac, the resident cats.

Breakfast was simple yet delicious, starting with a continental spread and followed by à la carte options. A lovely touch was the complimentary 4 PM high tea, with delightful sweet and savory treats.

The staff were warm, welcoming, and always ready to help, making our stay even more special. We’re so happy we chose 23 Love Lane and will definitely stay again when we return to Penang. Highly recommended!

Staff members on site, Nick, Janet, Kee and Shipun were wonderful. Breakfast was included but options were limited but the hotel is minutes away from awesome local delights. Be sure to sample the infamous Penang Char Kway Teow (flavourful fried flat noodles) and the delicious white coffee (and more)! Great location!

Incredible stay. The hotel structure itself is beautiful and the ambiance is very inviting. The room was spacious comfortable rooms. Location is prime walking distance to all the hot spots in Georgetown. Breakfast was thoughtful and delicious. Finally, the hotel staff, particularly Amer, are incredibly welcoming, warm, and make you feel so comfortable & safe during your stay. My only wish is that we had stayed longer!

This small heritage hotel is a gem! It has great character, the rooms are lovely and the staff are all friendly, helpful and made us feel right at home. In addition the artwork and antiques in the main lobby and rooms are interesting and appealing. The hotel is on Love Lane which has a great mixture of restaurants and bars within a two minute walk- but the hotel itself is quiet. If you enjoy an experience instead of a typical standard hotel, you will love this place, we will definitely stay here again if we come back to Penang!

The property is amazing- better than the picture and far better than we expected. The old house is full of character. The owner is so house proud and whole place is decked out with interesting antique furniture and ornaments. Really feel like we were back in time but with all the necessary mod con. Wonderful stay at 23 LoveLane. Staffs were friendly and yet able to give us the space despite the not-so-big premise. The outdoor garden was nice to laze around. This is a charming hotel in a renovated old-style house. It has a great location- it’s around a 7-10 minute walk to the main tourist area but is in a quiet neighborhood itself. They have afternoon tea everyday, which is perfect for escaping the heat. The staff are incredibly friendly. The day I left happened to be my birthday and they met me at checkout with a small cake from a local bakery. I was shocked! But that’s indicative of the level of service they give. The hotel was an oasis. You walked in and were met by gracious staff that took you to rooms that were both unique and beautiful. The bed was very comfortable. There was an shared veranda, garden and library where one could sit and enjoy the sounds of birds singing while drinking delicious coffee. The breakfast was free and very good and an afternoon tea was set daily. The artwork around the hotel had been selected by someone with a great eye for art and the furnishings were eclectic with a purposeful placement for both function and beauty. The hotel is centrally located along a historic street with nightly music, food and beverages. This hotel is an experience in itself and our group of four was sad to leave.

AVOID at any cost. This is a scam!!

We stayed in July. Our room was full of mould and the bedsheets were stayed and dirty from the previous client... simply disgusting. We had to switch room in the middle of the night, past midnight, move outside of the hotel to another house. It was extremely Boise and bad isolated. They told us they would refund us the night and since JULY until now (November) and so many emails... still no refund. The management is absent and just finding excuses to buy himself time. Very unprofessional and not trustworthy! Total Scam!!

23 Love Lane is a beautiful boutique hotel in the heart of the historic district of Georgetown. The staff can’t do enough for you, making our stay really relaxing. They were happy to park our hire car for us right opposite the entrance on a very busy street to avoid having to pay for a private car park. It’s location is on one of the busiest streets for bars and cafes but located near the quiet end so you don’t hear a thing to disturb your sleep! I would definitely recommend anyone coming to Georgetown to stay here where all the sites are within walking distance. It made for a special experience in this restored mansion; I can only echo everyone else’s opinions - a five star experience!

In a quiet location at the end of a busy tourist bar area. Best of both worlds quiet retreat after sightseeing but 2 minute walk to bars. We also walked to little India from here and a temple both 20 minutes away. We used Grab to get to the railway up Penang Hill and back to the airport both under 30 ringette. Staff were wonderful very helpful and kind. We had a complementary breakfast which was unexpected and free water bottle which was a much appreciated small gesture. We loved the building only negative was aging aurcon which was pretty noisy.

Long weekend at 23 Love Lane

I had stayed at this hotel with my family a few years ago and loved it. However, on my recent return, I was very disappointed. I had booked 3 rooms via expedia in the main house on 23 Love Lane itself and the booking specified that we had the Anglo Indian house/bungalow. When we arrived, we were told we were being \"upgraded\" to one of the annexe properties. Although this meant we had the whole property to ourselves and it was huge, this is not what we wanted as it was away from No. 23, it lacked natural light and it was very noisy, especially from the master bed-room at the front of the property. While we appreciated that the property had its charm and was nicely decorated, this is not what we had booked and not what we expected. The receptionist was quite clueless and unable to answer our questions as to why we had been moved to the annexe, I will say however, that the staff at the restaurant where breakfast is served were very pleasant and the service there was good. Housekeeping services at the annexe weren't great. Overall, although it was a nice stay, we were nonetheless disappointed at the apparent disregard for what we had booked, nor for the concerns we expressed about the noise level, etc.

This is a well located hotel for Georgetown, with most things within easy walking distance. They kindly allowed us to park in the garden/forecourt, saving money and very convenient. Our room was large and comfortable.People were consistently charming and helpful, including fellow guests who one meets over free tea in the lounge area overlooking the lovey little garden (through which one walks to the restaurant attached to (but not part of) the hotel, which does a great breakfast and good food generally. It was very good value and we would stay again.

It was a wonderful experience. Staff were very friendly and the hotel is very clean. Love the library (provided with coffee machine, a choice of tea leaves, fresh milk and even coke in the fridge!) and garden. Feels like staying at home. Chance to experience old world charm

Staying in a heritage hotel with old-world charm was a novel experience. The room and bathroom were comfortable and well-maintained. The staff were very helpful and made special efforts to make one feel welcome and comfortable.
The street which is more than 200 years old on which this heritage property is located can be off-putting to some, but is more than compesated by the throwback charm to older times.

Overall the hotel room itself was great: spacious, roomy, and a very responsive air-conditioning unit once you understood how it works. The breakfast was tasty, but I do wish they kept a better lid on the mosquito situation as I kept getting bitten in the dining and reception area. Interior decor was classy and tasteful, location was great, just off Lebuh Chulia and within easy walking distance of multiple local attractions.

Unsafe, unsanitary and overall unpleasant area

We stayed at this hotel at the end of January for a single night even though we had booked for 3 nights. We chose to check-out the very next morning of the first night.
The reason for the early checkout was that we did not feel comfortable with the level of safety and cleanliness of the area. As the holiday was in celebration of our 4th wedding anniversary, we did not expect that we would be required to be vigilant at all times with regards to our safety whilst out of the hotel premises. We were told by staff at Love Lane to ensure that handbags, phones and valuables were to be kept close by to avoid theft. We were also advised that the hotel gates closed at 9pm. I have unfortunately never been on holiday and been told that the place that I was staying at would close their only entrance. This implied that the area was not safe.
Apart from safety, the surrounding area is unclean and appears to be derelict. There are what appears to be mini trenches dug to direct water into drains. The water in these trenches is green and looks very unsanitary. This is a breeding ground for mosquito’s and other bugs. The street art mentioned is few and far between. This area is not as advertised. We researched using various booking sites, Malaysia tourism website and the Love Lane website. None of these mentioned the state of the area.
The hotel room itself was filled throughout our stay with the smoke from mosquito coils. In fact all our bags and clothes completely reeked of this smell.

The experience in staying in a UNESCO heritage building is very nice. The decorations, furnitures, etc was an experience.....a beautiful memory of my childhood. The fact that there are limited rooms, each with its unique design and without a fridge is very interesting. Make time to find out about the history of the building for added value. Service we have no complaints. But be mindful that if you staying in ground floor, you will hear squeaks from the floor boards upstairs

In the heart of George Town

Love the space, the staff, and the art throughout the hotel! The library upstairs is lovely. They breakfast is personal. They take care of you here.

Ask for a room upstairs- or one of the lofts.

Time tunnel hotel!

Standing right in front of the main gate entrance of the hotel, one will instantly feel a sense of attraction towards entering into a magical time tunnel of beautiful childhood memory! Love the wonderful experience indeed!

A great experience

Great hotel which feels more like a sanctuary, old colonial mansion and art exhibition in one! It's located in the middle of it all the action - I just walked everywhere.

The complementary afternoon tea is an extra touch which highlights the great service.

No one there to let me in

My flight into Penang was delayed by more than 2 hours so I arrived at the hotel at 1:30AM to find the front doors locked. I tried calling the hotel repeatedly and got no answer. As a last resort, I banged on the gate for a couple minutes, then gave up and checked into another hotel.

Great location, brilliant restoration

Brilliant restoration has created a boutique hotel of great charm and character. Perfectly located in Wolrd Heritage zone in quiet side street. Handy to most attractions and hop on/off bus. Staff more than helpful and attentive - Fauzi got up early to drive us to catch our train when taxi fell through. Redho met us with a life-saving freshly crushed cold juice and had great tips on attractions and restaurants. Breakfasts were yummy with wide range of local and western style foods. Afternoon tea (free) in the breezeway was a winner.

Wonderful calm hotel in the middle of George Town

On entering the courtyard, through two huge wooden doors, this peaceful hotel was an absolute delight .
Each bedroom was individually designed and tastefully decorated. Our room was the only one with an outdoor but private huge bathroom. The queen size bed was comfortable and the room clean and had complimentary soft drinks and water, coffee and tea.
We arrived in time for a light afternoon tea, complimentary of the hotel, and were served drinks by the very friendly and helpful staff.
The breakfast was lovely and there was plenty to choose from.
We would highly recommend this hotel and would certainly stop again.

we arrived early and the hotel was very kind to allow us an early check in.
The room was comfortable, pretty decent. Rustic-feel complimenting the culture and tradition of Penang.
Although the hotel was very thorough in having mosquito coil burning throughout my stay, I still had mosquitoes bothering me but it could have been worst if nothing was done at all.
Love the place.
