It was such a delight to stay in this beautifully restored house in the UNESCO Heritage area. The staff were great, especially Ms Anna Hoon, who helped us with a strange booking glitch. Taking a small dip in the pool was welcome and refreshing after a day of seeing the sights and spotting the street art. I can thoroughly recommend The Blue Mansion.

The most unique hotel I’ve ever stayed in. The house is beautifully presented with a balance between traditional furnishings and modern amenities. The only drawback was that there was no A/C in the house other than the bedroom, so it could get quite hot. However, the A/C in the bedroom worked very well so there was no problem falling asleep. I highly recommend this place for anyone visiting Penang.

A definite must stay hotel. What a mansion and staff! Every thing was possible and did happen, the staff were efficient, very friendly and capable. The breakfast menu and selection was vast with Kumar being the best lemon daiquiri maker. The food and service was excellent. The beds and pillows, oh so dreamy. Honestly, every single thing about this mansion was 5 star. There is a traditional Guznan player and a jazz band in the more contemporary part of the hotel, both very good. The mansion has an amazing history and looks magnificent. The bathroom products are super and plentiful. They offer a thorough and informative tour of the mansion. You must stay here!

Absolutely unique experience staying at this historical jewel. It felt like we were transported to more than a century ago but with contemporary amenities. The service was excellent and full of little surprises every day. This place is meant for those who appreciate wabi-sabi since it is a heritage site. Therefore, soundproofing is not great. We could hear traffic noise and nearby live band performance, and birds chirping. None of it hindered our experience staying here. However, the heavy stomping above us was slightly annoying at times.

Historical building in the center of old George Town. There is so much history to this building especially if you are familiar with early 1900 East Asian history. Walkable to Armanian street with all the cool street arts, and this a lot of restaurants near by. Friendly staff that kept the property well maintained. The house condition shows the age, but consider this property was built over 100 years ago, you can’t complain too much. Only negative if the loud music from the food center next door that lasts until midnight every day, makes deep sleep a bit difficult

After seeing our ‘offsite’ room - kilometers away, decided not to stay, at all. Biggest travel disappointment, I have had in years. Maybe, ever . . . . Did not stay (we declined our room) so can’t tell you about the rest?? Don’t let anyone force you into staying ANYWHERE, you are not comfortable / happy with. Life is too short. They should just stick with being a Museum. They are NOT hoteliers. Cool little place for a walk thru. That’s it. We went somewhere else, even though I paid for it. I am cheap and I went somewhere else and paid again - that’s how bad the experience was.

Lots of extra special touches included for your stay, loved the small sweet treat left at night. Breakfast selection was very good, the staff’s attention to detail was superb. The only negative was that the pool was a bit out of the way to get to & didn’t have the same atmosphere as the rest of the property, otherwise could not fault the service, room & all other areas of the hotel.

The residence is a combinatiom hotel & tourist attraction with non-guests visiting communal areas throughout the day on amplified guided tours. I was in Penang about 5 years ago and stayed at the E&O. We came to the mansion for a museum
tour and fell in love with it, so I promised myself that if ever I came back, I would stay here. This place is magical. No, you will not find gyms or lifts and you should probably pack lightly as lugging your cases around won’t be easy. However, it is an absolute privilege to be able to stay in one of the 20 rooms. The staff are attentive and the location is brilliant. Walkable to just about everywhere (though super hot). I am just happy that someone had the foresight to restore this place with such thought and love.

An incredible hotel to stay in while in Penang: you are transported back in time in the decor, detailed accurate renovations but with current conveniences and thoughtful touches. We stayed in one of the 2 town houses not the Blue Mansion itself, which we would recommend. ( - the main hotel I would imagine would also be fine, apart from 2 daily tours open to the public although hotel guest areas were roped off.) Our house was ‘Zhang’- a 2 floor original Chinese house beautifully and accurately restored - loved the design and in keeping furniture. Shower was brilliant/ in enormous bathroom, with lovely products. Multiple fans and A/C in bedroom. Washing machine which was handy. There was also daily maid service as in the hotel which was an easy 10 mins walk - but a phone call away, when it was raining brought a car to our door to get us for breakfast. That was excellent and on our early start the day we left, a lovely picnic basket was delivered with goodies to take with us. ALL the staff were polite, smiling and did a great job at welcoming us. As for the city…,loved it- something for all. A favorite in our 3 week trip in SE Asia.

This is a beautiful traditional building which also has a museum. It was used to film some of the scenes in “Crazy Rich Asians”. The building itself is gorgeous, and my room was very comfortable and had all the expected amenities. The breakfast was really nice and the hotel is well located in Georgetown. I was able to walk to shopping and restaurants, and always felt safe. I would definitely pick this very special place again for a future stay.

We also ate there a few times, one was for the Father’s day dinner with live music. It was a little expensive, but the food was very good. The breakfast buffet and afternoon tea is very good too.

Lovely property which is close to tourist attractions. Breakfast was included and options were to order a la carte and/or have the buffet offerings. All quite tasty. Everyday the room service was excellent and a lovely Malay treat was placed in the room. Music in the cafe next door might disturb some guest but earplugs were provided. We used the pool to cool off everyday which was a great way to relax and chill down before dinner. The history of the building and ambience was the very unique. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

We loved staying at The Blue Mansions. After spending a few days walking the streets of George Town, it was a pleasure to come back each day. The building and interior are stunning, and the service provided by the staff is first-class. It was a real treat to have our own Jacuzzi bath and to step outside with access to the pool.

Had this hotel been anywhere else in the world, i am sure we would be paying triple the price, which is well outside of our range.

We stayed in the 50's room with our 13-year-old; we had ample space, plenty of wardrobe space, and loved the private garden access at the back.

The staff were extremely accommodating and friendly and looking after us.

We booked just a regular room and lucked out with the Old Kitchen room. It was amazing. We had a private hot tub to use and just an overall comfortable room. The bed was great and the AC was even better. The staff is amazing and goes out of their way for you. The mansion is a must stay just beware that the hawker next door is very noisy but stops around midnight. We ate there and it was fabulous. The breakfast at the old mansion is way better than any standard free breakfast I’ve gotten anywhere else. My husband and I agree that was hands down the best hotel while we visited Malaysia.

A beautiful and unique place to stay. We loved our room. Keep in mind that there are daily tours. When we first arrived there was a tour going on and while the tours do not enter the private guest areas, we were a bit alarmed at the noise level, and also that we were not able to sit in the bar area for a cold drink. However, once the tour was over everything quieted down and we able to enjoy the space. Our room was on ground level, but our friends had booked a suite which was up a very steep and long flight of stairs; another thing to keep in mind. But the suite was huge and spacious, as was our room. The staff was perfectly lovely.

This property is unlike any other. A gorgeous mansion lovingly restored by a couple committed to giving it life after years of disrepair. It's simply stunning and exudes feng shui! The only negative is that they cannot control what gets developed around them (or doesn't) so it's near both high-rise monsters, and some run-down old properties.

Best stay in Malaysia!

We stayed for 3 nights on our tour of Malaysia and were wowed out by whole experience.
The hotel is in a fabulous location with Chinatown, the harbour and many other attractions within walking distance (or accessible by free CAT bus)
The rooms were extremely comfortable and steeped in history.
The breakfast was delicious and our sampler menu dining experience was a real treat.
Two areas however really stood out;
Firstly, the hotel is also a museum and is full of amazing history. A free tour for residents is provided and we were lucky to go on the Friday morning tour that was led by the owner Loh Lim who was informative and passionate about the property history and renovation. I would recommend doing the tour early in your visit so that you can appreciate the finer points of the hotel.
The greatest asset of the hotel however is the staff who were fabulous. They were super attentive and friendly...if only the staff at Raffles in Singapore and The Majestic in KL could match the staff at the Blue Mansion!
Remember, it is a museum and a live renovation project so it's not the super swanky experience of some of the other 4 and 5 star hotels on our travels but the service and atmosphere was outstanding!

Very nice restoration of a grand property. The staff are all very thoughtful and helpful. An example was making breakfast boxes for us because our checkout was very early.
Food on the property is quite good.
It is a small hotel only 18 rooms so there is limited staff sometimes you need to find them but they are always very helpful.
An annoying issue for me was their automated checkin which asks for a lot of information including a pic of your passport. The software doesn’t always allow you to enter information (I used my iPhone) . The number listed to call also seems is not wifi calling friendly so high charges were required.

If you're looking for a unique place to stay, The Blue Mansion is it! The mansion itself is beautiful and the staff were very nice.

It's walking distance to a lot of the attractions Georgetowm offers and close to the ferry if you happen to be coming through that way.

Highly recommend this place if you are staying in Penang :)

Its a wonderful building with very pleasant staff. Limited food options, but many local places to eat. Rooms are lovely, with lots of space. Road noise can be an issue, but wasnt for me.

The service is great and it's an excellent experience to stay at the Unesco heritage building. The only downside is that there is a neighbourhood food court with karaoke facility that can occasionally be too loud for us.

Despite the promise they would cater for gluten free breakfast, it was a real struggle. Same for dinner and prices were too high for quality of food. As I'm coeliac, and despite my timely request, I didn't feel that staff and management put real effort in accommodating GF support. Overall, a very average experience.

Penang weekend…

Beautiful heritage building, museum and hotel. Wonderful experience, peaceful, interesting and unique. Weekend evenings there is traditional music in the courtyard and upstairs an in house restaurant. A small pool and garden at the property. Staff were very friendly and super helpful. Room was spacious, clean and comfortable. Location is central, good for food, shopping and sightseeing. Very recommended, we would stay again.

Arrogantly relying on fame/reputation of property

This property is impressive. It’s an architectural gem! The accessible areas for the paid guests are tranquil, although clearly marked for guests only they are easily accessed by non guests as witnessed during our stay. lYou can’t doubt the aesthetics, cleanliness and integrity of The Blue Mansion.

Now, the problem lies with the staff.

Check in. We felt like it was an inconvenience, there wasn’t any personalised welcome to this boutique hotel, eg where are you from, have you been to Penang before? however we were welcomed with a nutmeg juice and then a tour of and introduction to the quirks of them room.

The Mansion is a very unique structure and it was fun staying in a beautiful piece of history. The staff were nice and there is a really cute cat that lives on the premises. I liked the tour talking about the mansion and the traditional live music played on Friday and Saturday nights. Breakfast buffet is not huge, but tasty. Nice touches include complimentary kueh in the afternoons and free minibar drinks (non alcoholic). The pool is small but adequate. I think they should provide an option to not change towels to save water (be more eco friendly). Also, I would suggest providing some kids menu items at the restaurants.

We stayed at the Tjiong townhouse associated with The Blue Mansion. It was a large and lovely unique space for our family. It was a comfortable haven from the hustle and bustle of the city outside. The complementary breakfast at The Blue Mansion was always delicious. The tour is a MUST....very well done! I can't speak highly enough about the staff at The Blue Mansion. Daniel, in particular, took great care of us. When our son left his sunglasses behind, Daniel located the sunglasses and mailed it to us at our next destination, and followed up with us until we received the package. I would highly recommend The Blue Mansion and its associated townhouses.
