Whilst there is some noise from local bars, it did not disturb our sleep at all. In fact the central location of this charming hotel made our stay even more enjoyable.

beautiful little heritage hotel well-located in the heart of georgetown. stayed 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed it.

rooms: tastefully decorated and spacious. there were separate sleeping and sitting areas, which we appreciated. saw many reviews about the noise situation but we thought it was perfectly fine — there were soundproofing curtains which were very effective, not sure if they're a recent addition.

building: interesting architecture, colonial look with peranakan influences, i personally adored it. not much in the way of amenities but there was a swimming pool that was reasonably well-maintained. exceptionally located near loads of eateries and cafes (try project gelato!)

service: staff was very warm, suffian in particular was very helpful with recommendations. daily housekeeping was great. loads of nice little touches like complimentary ice-creams at the pool, and saw the staff putting up decor for cny too.

all in all, highly recommended if you're looking for a local boutique hotel stay!

Fabulous 6 night stay at Muntri Grove. We were in an upstairs room which was very spacious and felt even more so with the vaulted ceiling.
The room was spotlessly clean. The pool was great to have a swim in the afternoon after we'd been out exploring. The location was so central and easy to walk everywhere.
But most of all the staff were so pleasant and helpful especially Suffian who we had the most interaction with. He gave us some great restaurant recommendations.
There is noise from the music bar nearby, but that has nothing to do with the hotel. We used ear plugs and they worked a treat.
A really lovely converted colonial house in a great location with amazing staff. Being a smaller hotel, the staff are so much more friendly than larger hotels, in my experience, and makes for a much more enjoyable experience

Quirky oldy world cool with a fantastic shower and a bed to fix any bad back. Yeah the TV is beyond its best and the pool needs fixing up a little but somehow it just adds to the charm.
The staff are both polite and helpful.
You may have read about the noise from one selfish neighbour, we had so came prepared with ear plugs and slept wonderfully well.

Beautiful room, so spacious and well furnished! It was great for lounging in during the hottest part of the day, with ample space to relax and read. The four-poster bed was a special touch.

Staff are incredibly friendly and the garden, though small, is pretty too. It is located within 5-10 mins walking distance to the main area, and round the corner from The Blue Mansion (which is well worth a visit). We will definitely be returning.

Two things to be aware of: they don’t have breakfast onsite, but it encouraged us to get out early and try local places; and there is a small amount of noise coming from a karaoke bar. Personally, the noise didn’t bother us and was really muffled. The bed is so comfy that we slept well regardless!

Muntri Grove is ideally located in the heart of Old Town UNESCO George Town close to trendy coffee shops, restaurants and bars. The hotel is sympathetically and authentically renovated to give you a taste of historic George Town. The rooms are spacious, clean and cool and the staff attentive and interested in making your stay as enjoyable as possible. The pool area is a bonus and we used it every day of our 7 night stay. Because of its idea location there is entertainment noise from 9 pm most nights from surrounding venues however earplugs provided by the hotel solves that problem.

Excellent hidden gem of a hotel in the old town. It’s in an old building with wooden floors. The rooms are big and fitted out well. The swimming pool is proportional to the hotel but is good enough to cool off after a sweaty walk round the town. Walking distance from some good restaurants and bars. Helpful staff. There was a mystery bar that played load music till quite late but you get used to it.

Nice boutique hotel in the old city

My wife and I really liked the Muntri Grove. Curiously, it was near several hotels recommended for an event I was in George Town for but was not included despite being more affordable and equal if not superior to the ones that were! We were greeted warmly by a friendly staff member and shown our lovely room, that was spacious and had a number of unique touches. I liked the high ceiling and ceiling fan. There is a small pool that we made good use of. And on the weekend, there was a complimentary “high tea” poolside with pastries. The only downside for some visitors — and I had noticed this in other reviews — was that a nearby club plays live music until late at night. It didn’t disturb me much, but one night my wife said she had a little trouble falling asleep. But we would stay at the Muntri Grove again.

What a beautiful property and experience. The reception desk particularly Sufian were incredibly helpful giving us recommendations to eat and see. The room was amazing and facilities were great. However what let this hotel down was the neighbouring clubs that played loud music till 1am and till 3am in the weekend. I hope the local government will help the local hotels as these 2 clubs impact all the hotels in the vicinity not just Muntri Grove.

A stunning property. From the high ceilings, beautiful woodwork and antiques to the rooftop pool. A small and intimate hotel with lovely staff. Tucked down a small roadway, it's right in the heart of the action and secluded at the same time. Great location! When arriving by ferry, it isn't very far to walk on the map, however, the traffic and crowded sidewalks would make the wheelie bag treck very hard in the heat. We decided on a taxi. Taxi driver told us it's a standard 20 for any trip. There is a free bus you can take from the ferry (CAT bus) which does a loop of the city and stops at stop 7, one short block from the hotel. Beware it gets very crowded. If you have data, of course use Grab. 24 hr convenience store close on the main road. As with most in Asia, the bed is extremely firm.

Muntri Grove is a heritage gem ideally located for exploring the built fabric and tantalising dining options of central George Town. The rooms are very generously sized and well equipped for a comfortable stay. The staff were exceptional, making us feel very welcome and promptly dealing with every request for advice and assistance. After nine thoroughly enjoyable days spent with Muntri Grove as my Penang base I couldn't be more pleased with my choice of accommodation.

We loved Muntri grove! The perfect Penang vibe. Rooms were nice and cool in the hot weather. It felt authentic to be in this type of colonial building, but add a beautiful pool! The staff were able to answer all questions. Lots of local food around. Everything is very clean! There is a kitchen area by the pool area but no food was served except a quick Saturday tea time. You will hear local karaoke/shows on the weekend nights FYI, but not overly loud, added to a cheerful vibe! Did not keep us from sleeping. We would definitely return here!

Staff are very friendly but unfortunately they're located next to a venue that plays unbelievably loud and awful music until 2am. The nature of the property means sound proofing is minimal. This, coupled with the rock hard beds, meant that I checked out after my first night of exceptionally awful sleep, two nights early.

Its a lovely place, beautiful room, kitchen for guests to use, which comes in handy as no breakfast or meals served here. Nice swimming pool, just no sun loungers as i saw in the hotel pictures. Plenty of pool towels and some free ice lollies and drinks in the room fridge. Only issue is the noise, wow, you cannot sleep, so bring ear plugs. Theres a club or something next door and music going on till 1am. Sounds like live band.. if you can sleep through this then this hotel is for you..

Dirty and Smelly and just uncomfortable.

The staff is amicable and lovely but unfortunately, this is not enough to make a stay pleasant. Upon entering my room there was a terrible smell of urine everywhere. You can tell the room had not been properly cleaned. The refrigerator edges are so dirty I was afraid to touch it with bare hands, I found black hair all over the sink....my hair very blonde. The bed was incredibly hard, it felt like sleeping on the floor. My back has been sore the whole stay. The sheets didn't seem to be washed as they smelled of urine and we musty. This property is not well looked after. I am very surprised at all the positive reviews as it is very rundown and not in the most hygienic of conditions. Every inch of the room was dirty and unkempt. It is a shame because they have the nicest staff.

This was my second stay here and staff remembered me from my first visit. My room was spacious, comfortable and clean. Amazing stay at Muntri Grove. The staff was incredibly kind and attentive, the room was beautiful and so large, and the pool area was lovely. Although the staff warned me about the music next door it was never so loud to be bothersome. I was lucky enough to be there for the monthly dinner series, if you are able to attend this I absolutely recommend as it was an amazing experience that really enhanced my trip.

Sadly, this gorgeous wee heritage hotel has been compromised by an outdoor bar that has just opened next door. The bar has live & taped music playing extremely loudly into the wee hours. We stayed on the Friday night, having been supplied with earplugs by the staff. The music was so loud they made no difference at all, it was like trying to sleep in a nightclub. The music played until 3am even though the bar said its closing time was midnight (we couldn't beat it so we joined it until midnight). We had to check out & find another hotel for the following night. I felt really bad for the reception staff, they were very understanding but there is nothing they can do to remedy the situation for the guests.

Disappointing. Room was generally clean but mosquito net over the was filled with so much dust that I had to take antihistamines to stop coughing. Bedding was unsatisfactory- bedspread with no proper blanket or duvet. Uncomfortable to the skin and inappropriate, and inadequate.
There is a very loud pub just beside the hotel playing pounding music on some nights (dance music with an out of tune live band) up to midnight. It made a decent hotel seem like a backpacker's retreat. We should have been warned about this on the website and not after having paid for the hotel. Reception assured us that the music would not reach the bedroom area but it was just as loud, as the soundproofing of the hotel was poor. There from the room door for example had slats which allowed noise and light in. I did not pay for a place that's so unreasonably noisy.
Room was huge but the bathroom was weird - a small shower cubicle and a small toilet cubicle, both with glass doors and opened up directly into the living/sleeping area. Just not what one would expect in a good hotel.
These issues spoilt what would otherwise have been a good hotel at a good location. For a hotel rated 9/10, this was shocking. Never coming back.

I would have given this place 5 stars for the beautiful hotel, immaculate and clean rooms and friendly staff. But my partner and I stayed for 6 nights and 5/6 nights we couldn't sleep because of the loud, open-air club down the street. They even have huge sub woofers on tree tops! Since the hotel is a heritage building, it does not have modern insulation that can keep out the noise (ex: the wooden room door has open slits on them, so no sound proofing from outside noises). The music would start playing around 9pm and would get progressively louder and louder until 2/3am in the night. When we finally get sleep at 3am, we woke up from the mosque prayers at 6am. Ear plugs do not help. First we were told it was the world cup, then the next day it was just a one time party, etc. We ended up switching three different rooms to try to get as far away as possible from the noise. Finally, on our last night, they moved us into a sister hotel down the street (which was far enough from the club that we could sleep). Really wished they had moved us from the start instead of getting our hopes up and making us pack every other day for a different room. It felt like they wanted to pretend it wasn't a problem until it was honestly too late for us (lack of sleep for consecutive nights was really grating on us). Jenny, one of the hotel receptionists was extremely nice throughout. The other receptionist felt more on the manager's side than the client's side which was a bit disappointing (he was t

Great lovely break at Muntri Grove

Our room looked exactly like it did in the photos. Absolutely love the decor, was a mix of old and new. Bed was comfortable and I had the best few nights of sleep in a long time! Water pressure was also fantastic.

Surrounding area is really quiet which I very much enjoyed. Hotel is located almost to the end of a street which meant that it was pretty much silent throughout the day. Loved that it was only a 5 to 10 min walk to amazing food and things to see.

Literally walkable to any part of the city from Muntri Grove. Great and warm hospitality by the staff. If you like peace and quiet, this is definitely the place to go. Exceeded expectations... this 2 story hotel is much better than hotels of higher star rating.. The staff were fantastic.. the rooms were very clean, spacious and well appointed. The manager is a gem and staff very accommodating.. its quietly hidden down a side street conviently located in the heart of Georgetown, and minutes away from major tourist hotspots and food spots/ blue manson etc will stay again. Being cycling friendly was a major plus as I was on a cycling road trip and pool upstairs was a pleasant relaxing bonus.

We stayed at The Muntri Grove Hotel for 12 nights over the Chinese New Year period. Throughout our stay the care and service we received was outstanding. Manager Fazli and his team were such warm friendly people. They really made our time at Muntri Grove very special. Our room was large, comfortable and well maintained. And the pool, an oasis of calm. From the moment we arrived at Muntri, Fazli made us feel so welcome and like we were at home away from home. The rooms are spacious and clean with a day bed and a gorgeous mosquito net draped four poster. We were on a family holiday and all of us felt completely at home from the minute we arrived. Our breakfast every morning, although light, was always delicious especially the roti and the chicken porridge served by the very smiling and delightful Hansi and Shinii. Hansi very quickly remembered how we liked our coffee and also explain all the local dishes which changed each day, on the weekend they also do a wonderful local afternoon tea where Fazli himself makes the cakes. All in all we had the most wonderful stay for 8 nights and we will definitely be back. Thank Muntri Grove team for making our family holiday so special

The service was excellent and the staff were super courteous and helpful. This made our stay very nice. The property is very nice, but is showing it's age in some small ways -- bathrooms are a little worn, with mould on the ceilings and around the sink and shower caulking. These are easily fixed so it's a bit strange that the hotel management doesn't seem to deal with this on a routine maintenance schedule. In one of the rooms we stayed in, the mosquito net around the bed was quite dirty and we had to get the staff to remove it. Again, shows a lack of attention to maintenance. Other than these few things, overall we were happy with our stay and found it to be good value for the price we paid.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 10 night stay in UNESCO GEORGETOWN'S Muntri Grove Boutique Hotel. With only 16 rooms, all refurbished from row of historic shophoises we felt like we were staying in a stately private hotel.
Our room comprising a sitting area, desk and lovely views to the lush garden was large and beautifully furnished. The pool was a huge bonus especially after long hit days if walking around this interesting town.
The staff were attentive, professional and very friendly - all with excellent local knowledge.
Breakfasts we're delicious and featured daily local.specialities. Excellent coffee too.
Story at Muntri Grove. You'll really enjoy this lovely calm home away from home hotel.

A charming boutique hotel.

We had an enjoyable and comfortable four nights stay at this charming boutique hotel. Room was big, airy and nicely decorated and opened out to the lovely garden being on the ground floor. Breakfast was
good. Pool was long and deep enough for a decent swim. Staff were friendly and helpful especially Esther.
Some noise in the mornings from the adjacent school. Great location. Close to Love Lane, Lebuh Chulia and Red Garden Food Court.

Cute, cozy, and spacious

We loved this place. Very large, open floor plan rooms with a bed + large sitting area with a comfy couch, table, and TV. Mosquito net over the bed. Very clean and modern. Within walking distance of the epicenter of Georgetown. Two minor issues (that weren't a big deal): 1) on the weekends, a bar up the street seems to have live music. Not an issue if you wear earplugs; 2) the bed could be a bit more comfortable, as it's on the firm side. But really, those are minor issues - this was our favorite hotel (out of four) in Malaysia, including two relatively upscale places in Kuala Lumpur. We would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Lovely renovation of heritage building with all the mod cons of today. Rooms roomy and relaxing. Breakfast by the pool. Lovely end of town and walkable to most of the centre. Very close to free CAT buses. Burgeoning coffee cafe scene close by but removed from backpacker night life of Chula street.

It is a beautiful and relaxing place, in a great location. However, the air conditioner is place in a weird location and it didn't properly cool the room. Also, mosquitoes kept us up. Perhaps using vape would help. But overall great place!

We REALLY like Muntri Grove in George Town during our stay there earlier in March. First of all, the room was beautiful AND very spacious, bright and tastefully furnished. It had all the bells and whistles, from tea kettle to hair dryer, bathrobe, slippers etc. Breakfast was served next to the pool (while the breakfast area was rather small but it was not a problem with other guests) and it was always great with western and Asian options. The hotel staff was pleasant and helpful, no exceptions. The hotel is located close to attractions and good dining and shops etc in George Town. We would definitely return to Muntri Grove and highly recommend this hotel to people traveling here.

Beautiful rooms, lovely pool, everything super clean and tastefully decorated. Staff super friendly and helpful. Relatively quiet here but near to everything you need.. shops, bars, restaurants etc. Loads of great photo opportunities around the area. Really enjoyed our stay here!

Great location, down a lane on a street that has little traffic. Close to a school and a bar that created some noise but wasn’t too bad- able to sleep through it especially with a fan or air con on. Staff were terrific......Friendly and helpful. There were a couple of issues with our room but they were dealt with and resolved immediately we mentioned them. There were back and front entrances to the lower level rooms into courtyards which meant the hotel was suitable for smokers. Even though we had a heavy smoker next door the smell did not come into our room. The rooms are large and the furniture is quirky. Breakfast was light but adequate. The pool was long and narrow but not shady enough for our liking. The hotel is very close to Red Garden hawker centre, A terrific cafe called Muntri Mews, Love Lane bars and restaurants. Chulia street is easily accessed through a bright and modern cafe/convenience store right next to Muntri Grove.

Great boutique hotel in the heart of Georgetown

We loved staying at Muntri Grove - the room was large and nicely decorated. The staff were friendly and very helpful, and the rooftop pool was a lovely place to cool down in the heat of the day. Overall a beautiful boutique hotel in the heart of Penang's old town, would highly recommend a stay here.

Incredible luxury boutique hotel in UNESCO area

From start to finish our stay at the Muntri Grove Hotel was fantastic.

The staff were wonderful at check in and provided us with a welcome pot of tea in our lovely room. The room itself was fantastic - almost a suite! Very large, it has a sitting area at one end of the room with a day bed, TV and desk, and the beautiful modern four poster bed at the other end of the room, with a separate shower and toilet in between (sounds a bit of a weird layout, but it works!). The aircon and wifi worked well (almost too well in the aircons case!), and the housekeeping and turndown services were very good. The only negative about the room is the noise, which did not bother my partner and I. However if you are a light sleeper, the live music from a nearby bar, the call to prayer in the evenings and morning, and the school nearby may be an issue for you.

The breakfast was lovely, substantial and cooked to order, enjoyed next to the pool in a shady area with fans. The pool was divine- not large, but big enough to do a couple of laps, and clean and well kept. All of the facilities were fantastic.

The location is fantastic - set just back from Muntri Street, one of the lovely old streets in the area, and just around the corner from the Blue Mansion, and a stones throw from lots of bars, restaurants and night markets. We found it a great base to explore Georgetown’s UNESCO area and buffer area from, and a lovely refuge from the heat of the afternoon.

10/10, would stay again!

Georgetown. Quiet hotel. Worth a stay.

First visit to Penang, Georgetown and found this small, sixteen room hotel suited all our needs. Very comfortable and staff very helpful. Very close to all amenities and sites of interest. This hotel exceeded our expectations and made our star enjoyable. Other visitors were very pleasant people.

The hotel is charming and the rooms are large and comfortable. It is unfortunate that the restaurants and pubs neighbouring the hotel had music with a base woofer playing all hours of the day and night. The rumble and boom of the bass woofers could be heard late into the night and early morning. This was annoying and irritable. No fault of the hotel but they do feel the affect. WiFi was slow and the TV channel selection was limited.

Little Oasis in Penang

This was one of the most charming hotels I've stayed in, the area was convenient to all of the touristy area but had a local flair to it, the street was quiet but walking to the end of the block you had all the street food and vendors so close to the hotel. The room had enough space or a couple and a little lounge area to eat breakfast or watch television, even read a book. The pool was refreshing and clean. Overall I would definitely book this hotel again if I traveled to Penang.

Nice place but beware the neighbours loud music

Good location for walking around Georgetown and getting on buses. Huge room with sitting area. Nice breakfast with good coffee. Good Hawker stall around the corner. Accommodation quite expensive compared to other comparable places I stayed in Malaysia. Only downside was the loud music that went on into the early hours from somewhere in the neighbourhood.

Nice Hotel close to Chinatown

Easy walk to loads of restaurants and bars. Rooms were spacious and clean. Breakfast basic but plentiful and nice pool. Only hiccup was checkin as nobody was there so we had to wait for quite sometime before someone arrived. Apart from that we had a nice stay.

Amazing staff who go above and beyond

Muntri Grove is a lovely boutique hotel in a perfect location in one of the heritage streets of Georgetown. The decor is beautiful, bed and pillows very comfortable and there is a great little pool for a cool off at the end of a day of exploring. We really enjoyed the small buffet breakfast. They had a local option as well as the usual suspects of cereal, bread and eggs. The staff in this hotel were delightful. Our air conditioner had problems early in our stay and they immediately got to work on it. It couldn’t be fixed so they moved us to their much more upmarket hotel, Seven terraces, which is a beautifully restored set of shophouses. We finished our stay here with the same level of friendly service. Everyone went out of their way to be helpful. The three hotels in the street, Muntri Grove, Muntri Mews and Seven Terraces are all fabulous. We dined at Muntri Mews twice and the food was excellent. Thanks for all of special service and care.
