Good hotel, staff were friendly, plenty to see locally. They didn't make as much of the clock as they should. Would recommend. Food and drink good, and there is a local gastro pub if you would like some thing more up market.

Staff don’t seem to be around at any time. Bed is quite poor. If anyone is staying in the room above you, it may sound like they are about to come through the floor. Bags of linen in the hallway all the time next to the room not just when they are cleaning. Door feels very flimsy and like anyone could walk in at anytime. Wouldn’t recommend for anyone looking for a nice weekend away but if you have a wedding near by it will do as a place to sleep.

3 nights there- last night very noisy couple above who were awfully loud all night. Poor soundproofing and also loose tap In Bathroom and bulb missing and woke up to water leaking from above through bathroom light. Checked out early due to lack of sleep by noise from above! Otherwise was ok but wouldn’t stay again

We booked the cottage and were so glad we did. The photos although good, don’t really do it justice. The bedroom opens out onto a spacious balcony with good quality wooden table and chairs. The view is very serene, as you can see the river. The hot tub is really amazing. It was very clean and we were shown how to use it properly. If anything it was a little hot at 40c. It kept this heat for several hours. Bathroom was beautiful. Living room immaculate. And a 2nd bathroom with toilet and shower.
Alison warmly greeted us on arrival and her partner Andrew helped out with showing us the room. They are both extremely friendly, polite, professional and hardworking people.
We had one meal in the restaurant. We ordered the halloumi sticks for a starter and they were absolutely divine. My friend had the stew for her main and I had the Yorkshire pie pudding. They were both seasoned well. The meat was tender enough for me and it was plentiful. The Yorkshire pudding didn’t taste like a Yorkshire pudding. Or a pie. It was quite tough and quite tasteless. Which gutted me because it’s one of my favourite things to eat. The prices were reasonable. The wait time for the starter wasn’t bad, at 25mins, but we waited for the main for a long time. About 1.30hrs after ordering. Which is too long to wait, but apologies were made. I suspect this is understaffing. Overall we absolutely loved our stay! We wouldn’t hesitate to come back. It’s set in a beautiful location, which is quiet and pleasant.

Great hotel next to the river, lovely room over looking the gardens and river, the balcony was a bonus. Food was lovely and the portions large, plenty of parking spaces in front and to the side of the hotel. Great walk along the river bank and through the trees to walk off the dinner. Heading back there Monday 25th May 2026, for more of the same, if your in the area definitely worthwhile staying over here.

Everything about The George was very good but it is obviously in the midst of much needed renovations. I felt very sad because I grew up in the area and it was always such a popular hotel. However, we enjoyed our stay and the staff were all very helpful. Dinner was good, despite having to wait quite a long time for it. Good luck to the owners for the future and hope that the renovations go well.

This is not a good hotel. I booked a premium room and the room was far from premium. Radiator wouldn’t turn off so too hot, and valve was broken so nothing could be done about it. Furniture chipped and in such poor condition l don’t think a charity shop would have accepted it. Door to the bedroom looked like at least one attempt to break in had been made. Room decor in desperate need of refreshment.

Staff were often unavailable, waits for both reception and bar. No one available to show us where to go at breakfast, day 1 was buffet, it looked as though food was put out at start and late comers had dried up food (we were 45 mins before end of service). 2nd day reduced menu at night because they had a wedding the next day. No choice of starter or dessert we were not advised about this beforehand or we would have eaten elsewhere. Food was just ok. Room was fine, but rattling heating system on 1st night kept us awake - seemed to be resolved by 2nd night. Dressing table did not have socket available for hair dryer, sockets that were available did not have a mirror. Overhead lights did not work. Hotel looking a bit tired overall. Staff at checkout couldn't work the computer and tried to overcharge,
needed manager to sort it out- another wait. Positives, bed was comfortable and staff, when you could find them were lovely and helpful. We will not stay again or feel able to recommend.

LOSING THE APPEAL

I've stayed at the George a few times and its been ok
This time was terrible. The room was fly infested. The curtains were off their rings. Window sill filthy. Then there was no cook for the evening meal, so everyone had to go elsewhere to eat. Seems there was no attempt to do anything to help out.

Breakfast was dismal. 3 pitiful cereals. No yogurt or fruit. Bread was still in the plastic bag, so stick your hand in to pull slices out No attempt to make the table look appealing. No music. There's better places to spend £10 on brefast

Stayed for 3 nights. On arrival I was told breakfast was not include despite my booking stating it was . First morning no breakfast as the chef didn’t turn up. Breakfast room smell of damp.
Rooms are tired and need a make over.
Meal service is slow . On last night I ordered. Food but it did not turn up. Had to ask. The chef had forgotten my order. Having a drink in the bar when a mouse appeared!
It was just one issue after another and was expecting Basil Fawlty to appear at any moment . Would not recommend

The staff was very friendly and helpful. I appreciate that the linens and sheets seemed fresh and new and the rooms were tidy. My room was particularly spacious with a queen bed in one room and 2 twin beds in a separate room. The downside was that as others have said, the rooms are rather tired. Stains on carpet, chairs, around the shower, etc. That said, if you're just looking for a decent priced place to rest, it could get the job done. I'm just happy the beds were fine and the staff were nice.

Third time staying (or not) at this hotel.. Arrived with two very tired teenagers, this was meant to be a stop off as was travelling from Scotland back down to Kent.
Got there and the lad behind the desk remembered us from the week before, but couldn’t seem to find our booking.. we had booked the deluxe cottage so our granddaughters had their own room whilst still under our supervision..
well it seems there wasn’t a room for us… they had double booked.. no apology at all.. we had booked this stay over a month ago.
I will not be staying here again.. the food is awful, the staff scruffy and lack any customer service skills.
We had another 4 hour drive due to them messing up the rooms!

Once a good hotel sadly cannot recommend itnow.

The check-in was quick and smooth with a friendly Junior member of staff, the bedroom was large and comfortable. The ensuite bathroom had a large bath and shower. The shower had black mould growing on the inside. and the toiletries were not replenished in the seven days that we were there.

The breakfast to be honest was depressing, as there wereonly a handful of guests there was very little attention given to the breakfast, no fresh fruit or pastries no buffet options staff only asked if you wanted a cooked breakfast, when it arrived, The bacon was dehydrated and brown. The sausage was wrinkled and dried out. The mushrooms had dried out so much. They were tiny and shrivelled and the black pudding could not be cut but I did manage to break it in half! The only thing that was edible on the plate was the egg so the thought of having pre paid for breakfast and having this presented each morning was depressing, when I complained several mornings the staff member did nothing and were obviously unhappy at the complaint, no apologies or options were given. There was repeatedlyno hot water for the tea and it had to be asked for. Miraculously on the last two mornings when they were wedding guests staying at the hotel a buffet breakfast was provided and all the food was cooked to a very good standard, it left us feeling that the low occupancy meant low standards i.e. The guests can take it or leave it they have already paid.

Staff were nice and friendly. Food was well below standard, breakfast was luke warm, bacon and sausages overcooked. Ran out of butter and had to ask. Sunday lunch was mediocre but a very long wait 1.5 hours!! Ran out of lager one particular afternoon. Room was lack lustre and housekeeping was well below par. Plug in sink got stuck and couldn’t empty, shower doors were on their last legs. Fan didn’t work, no hairdryer. Towels weren’t changed and teas and coffee supplies were not replenished through the 2 days stay, shower gel container was completely empty upon arrival and not checked to be refilled. Wall between our room and one next door was so thin you could hear everything. Very pleasant setting but the whole place was badly in need of repair and maintenance. Dog friendly but no dog bins available unless you walk to nearby car park where there is a council bin.

Didn't have the chance to try the food but the dining area looked lovely and cosy. The noise from downstairs didn't carry up which was a plus. I'd probably stay here again.

Stunning location, very clean and tidy , lovely food and great walks nearby. Beautiful beer garden by the river.
Dropped a star rating due to a few housekeeping issues- no duvet covers on the duvets, only one remote control between 2 tvs, front door handle lose,no facilities to dispose of recycling and dog waste and dead batteries in the candles in the living room.Fresh milk would have been nice in the fridge rather than pots of uht.
Overall though, a thoroughly enjoyable stay.

Booked a family quadruple room for me, my wife, our two sons (1 and 3) and our dog. Called 4 days before to confirm reservation and ensure a cot would be available which was confirmed. When we arrived our room had been given to someone else so was offered a double and single bed room which was to small and had a used towel on the bath which I noted was unacceptable.

We were then offered two rooms next to each other, each with a double bed which was not ideal as we did not want to split and be it apart from either child. After a 5-hour drive we accepted to get out of the rain. However, when we entered one of the rooms key fob letter straight in to find another couple lying on the bed. They were understandably mortified so we quickly raised the issue and the staff seemed bewildered as to how this could happen. Having read other reviews, it appears there are at least three or four locked occurrences of the same thing happening.

That said Ryan, the manager along with his staff made amends the only way they could with complimentary beverages and sincere apologies.
We will never return and have learned our lesson the hard way. Please stay clear at all costs.

The place has diminished over the year to now looking old, worn and not very well looked after. From dirty curtains that are barely hanging on the poles to I'll fitting window frames, unclean carpets and cobwebs all over the walls. The room had a balcony which wasn't safely bolted to the wall, the bolts were loose! Couldn't inform anyone as there was no one at reception upon leaving.

Stayed for one night. Staff on arrival appeared to have better places to be. Corridors smelt a bit foisty but the room was a good size with everything we needed. Window was open and couldn't close it because of a safety screen and although it seems a quiet place, there was a lot of road noise through the night. Walls were very thin, could hear conversations and chatter from other rooms and presumably the bar below. On leaving staff were quite friendly to the people ahead of us, asking how their stay was etc but just took our room key and paid no interest in our stay. Wouldn't pay the full price to stay here so glad we got it through a deal with discount

Expedia assured us we would get a refund but emailed to say sorry they couldn’t get hold of the management at the hotel. We are now out of pocket. Wouldn’t book with Expedia ever again. My room was very clean as was the bedding. The bed was large and comfortable and the room was well heated. The shower was very powerful and a good temperature.the blackout curtains worked very well and the hotel/pub was easy to find.
However the maintenance of the room was poor with chipped paint, cracked walls, bodged carpet, a door with such a large gap at the bottom that I had to use a towel to block out the light plus the lights on the bed didn't work. This was an 'executive room' which had a garden view (of a big bush and the river if you peered around it) The breakfast was just OK, but a bit lacking in something, for example there wasn't any brown or red sauce on the table and the breakfast room smelled of cabbage on both days.
What could have been better? Attention to detail in maintenance, a cozy armchair or sofa in an 'executive' room a breakfast with more than one of each item in it and better bread than mother's pride.
This is not one of those hotels that I was desperate to get away from, but nor is it one I would go out of my way to come back to.

Check in very easy, room nice and comfortable with all you'd need for a pleasant stay although room was cold and heating didn't appear to be on, towel rail in bathroom also not on. I think if I was staying longer i would have said about it to the staff

We stayed in the Annex across the court yard the smell was unreal was of old damp musty the room was spacious but the smell was in the room too not as strong as the landing and stairs shower was nice but the tray filled up quick and the water ebbed onto the floor probably why the place smell damp and foisty the food was of good taste but the waitress messed the order up and what we got wasn't what we ordered the IPA was nice and the wine it was valentines night the candles on the table were dead and we had to ask for a fresh one and for it to be lit all the table candles seemed to be the same breakfast was terrible cold and bland the toaster didn't work there was no coffee not a full English breakfast all at once was very mishmashed waiting for the chef to bring out sausage and bacon couple of choices of teas but no earl grey there was minimal selection of continental offering with no pastries I would stay again but I'd maybe order from a different menu and skip the breakfast when you go in a restaurant and get handed a menu only to find 3 of the 4 items you want are not available is pretty poor this is the worst best western I've stayed at out of 5 I'd give it a generous 2 only because the IPA was nice

Had stayed here a number of years ago before it closed. Was delighted to see that the main building which is full of character, had not been remodelled or modernised and all the great features retained. Especially the Grandfather clock. Great to have a pet friendly place to eat and stay. Friendly helpful staff. Will stay again.

Have stayed here a few times. Ususally good. Room 226 is very noisy - upstairs floorboards squeak badly. Pillows have done their time. Toilet seat was loose. Sink taps need a good clean undeerneath. Radiator had a few very noisy moments. The breakfast room was deathly silent and cold. Breakfast was mediocre. Not the best way to start the day

fine family meet up place

it suited us fine for a family meet-up. a slight sadness was that we weren't able to use the river view restaurant for my daughters birthday evening meal but were very happy with the standard of the food served in the other room. some rooms were rather hot and another rather cool but no so much that we needed to get assistance

Definitely won’t be back. The only good thing was the room was clean and spacious. However we were moved from an upstairs room to a downstairs room because there was no remote for the tv. We then had a pretty much sleepless night because whoever was in the room above was walking around frequently and the creaking floorboards woke us up. As well as that there was no heating in the room and no hot water for the whole stay, not good for an elderly couple on a cold February night. We stayed as a break on a long journey from Scotland to London but didn’t feel either rested or refreshed to resume the journey. Will be making an official complaint.

Our room was spacious and spotlessly clean with a lovely little balcony and amazing views over the river. Evening meal and breakfast were both beautiful. The staff were very friendly and attentive.

The room was large and so was the bathroom. It was not very warm at 9pm on an evening when i was sat at the desk doing paperwork. Then on one night there was no heating at all and unsble to take a shower. It was really cold and i was unable to dleep very much at all. I complained and was told \"dont worry we have it logged with our maintenace team!\" No mention of a refund partial or otherwise. I really should have taken yhis further, but, was busy and really should not need to. This is yhe hotels respondibility to offer recompense.

To be fair the problem was fixed the next day. But this is a very old building and the room was still cold on an evening.

Pleasant staff, beautiful area around the Hotel and its on the banks of the River Tees. Great views from the restaurant ar breakfast time if you can stand the cold!

But, i would certainly visut again, but only in summer.

Ideal short stay

Stayed for 2 nights while doing some training in Stockton. Comfortable, convenient and located in nice area. Food served was delicious also. Would book again if I'm in the area again.

Stayed for 2 nights as in the area for work. The room was clean, comfortable and I slept well. There was a couple of items in the room that made it look a little tired.

Food in the bar was amazing, nice place to do work in the evening and have a beer. The staff were lovely and helpful could not of asked for anything more. Also very well priced. If I'm back in the area would definitely stop again. Thanks
