Lovely hotel, beautiful grounds, nice deluxe spa room, comfy bed, friendly, courteous staff, all across the hotel departments. The only negative is the evening meal. The restaurant had a nice ambience. The starters were nice then we both went for the Wagu cheeseburger which made your mouth water when you read the description on the menu. It arrived and was dry, no taste, in not the toasted sesame seeded brioche bun as described but a dry catering type bun, a lettuce leaf and a slice of tomato, it was served with about 12 dry fries, really disappointing to say you were allocated £32 each towards the evening meal. We would stay again but not eat at the hotel.

Staff excellent. Setting beautiful. We stayed in the old house which had real charm, but was a little tired. Beyond the historic house is a conference centre, with spa. We ate an evening meal in the 1744 restaurant which was well priced and very tasty.

The room was a bit out of the way on level -2 with a view of the wall out of the window and there was a couple things that could have done with being fixed hole in wall, mirror in bathroom etc but overall was a really good stay. The spa was nice but quite busy so hard to get good use of pool and hot tub. The restaurant was a good experience really nice food and the staff were nice and helpful.

The receptionist Carol was lovely at check in and our room was lovely and clean with evrything we needed. The shower was tremendous. Food good and good choices and waitresses were very pleasant. We enjoyed the pool and had a very enjoyable stay. Superb breakfast everything you could think off to eat and very fresh x

We stayed one night and we enjoyed the use of the leisure facilities. The gym was very well equipped and opening times were good. We stayed in a family room and although a little dated - stains on the floor and bed linen, musty type of smell and shower that was more of a trickle and either ran very cold or very hot - we did have a lovely stay. The staff were very courteous and friendly.

I booked this for my mum and dad for my dad’s birthday. There was a dirty sock on the floor in their room when they arrived so clearly had not been fully cleaned, The room was supposed to be deluxe and wasn’t so they complained at reception. They gave them a different room hours later as there wasn’t a room ready and the dressing table/desk was covered in dust. They couldn’t get into the spa as was too busy, They left a shirt in the wardrobe and the hotel have told them they will have to pay £10 for this to be returned Not the service you would expect from a 4 star hotel

All of the plates around pool to hold water were broke and falling off. Food was indeible and was not as described in the menu. 4 star hotel with Premier Inn vibes. The pool is nice and even though it has its grand, stately home exterior, most of this hotel looks like it was built in the 80s and not updated since. Food is bang average and the whole thing has the vibe of a premier inn with a Beefeater attached to it. Staff were all lovely!

Lovely family orientated hotel. Kitted out beautifully for Christmas and the spa was very nice - a little over subscribed though due to the number of people accessing. I couldn’t get to go in the steam room or sauna, they were always full. Room was nice a little cold in the joining room for our children as there was no heating in there but it didn’t seem to bother the children. Towels in the room were perfectly white, clean and soft. The tv in the room was a bit disappointing as was Samsung tv plus and I couldn’t see any regular tv channels so the options although plentiful weren’t great. Food in the bar and restaurant was nice, we really enjoyed the food the portions for evening adult meals were small so I’d recommend getting a side with your order. Kids portions were ample for them. I loved the house Pinot Grigio- lovely wine! Staff nice and friendly, Overall I’d give this hotel a 4/5

A really disappointing nights stay. The front of the hotel is lovely so we had high expectations. On entering the hotel there was a massive queue for check in, the queue was right round the entrance lobby, not a good start. Once checked in the room was OK, the carpet was stained but otherwise clean. Bathroom was nice. The spa was so busy we were advised to come back later, that gave us time for a drink in the overpriced bar. The only ale on tap was John Smiths, never a good sign. The bar was lacking in atmosphere and a few occasions there was no staff there, had to wait for them to appear to get a drink. Once we got in the spa it was OK.

The restaurant was terrible, slow service and terrible food and drink. Don't order the £27 bottle of South Australian Shiraz, they have managed to find a weak flavourless wine at 11%. If you order the burger it is just an average burger with a few chips and nothing else. Didn't get any vinegar or other condiments. Not the food of a 4 star hotel.

A common theme was the staff, apart from the lady on the Spa reception they didn't seem to care or really want to be there, it was really bad customer service. Something strange is going on there.

There are better hotels, best avoided

Arrived to the hotel with me and my partner. Check in really easy and warm and friendly staff. Stayed at room 332. Room was really tired. Shower was so poor, either too hot or freezing cold.

Went down for drinks and again star really warm and friendly. Service at the bar was great. Booked a table in the restaurant and ordered 2 drinks. It took 35 mins to receive drinks. We got food quicker than we got our drinks despite asking a couple of times.

Sleep was okay, pillows were rock hard but we both got a half decent sleep. Breakfast overall was okay. Sausages had a funny taste but a great selection and far quicker service in the morning.

I wouldn’t return back to the hotel unless rooms were upgraded. Corridors had wall paper peeling off and for a 4 star hotel, you shouldn’t really see his.

This is a very tired old hotel. Not 4 stars. The first room I was allocated had not been made up or changed over from the previous guest, so that was pretty disgusting to walk into. After walking miles back to reception, I was upgraded to a deluxe spa room, which was even further away, there was nothing deluxe about it at all. There were three lamps in the room - all of which were broken. The air-conditioning did not work. No phone signal in the rooms. No usb ports in sockets. Nice surroundings but disappointing otherwise.

The review rankings and stars are correct. The hotel front is the picture you would expect but from there on in it’s nothing special. For the price paid it is well below par. The rooms need renovating, the fridge is missing and no water or bar if needed. Basic shower gel but no conditioner or body lotion etc…Even premier inn is better equipped and half the price.The public bar was dirty and unattended and having leant on both bar and table I needed to change my top worn due to wet areas. Finally if you’re going to have an office DO NOT PUT IT OPPOSITE A BEDROOM AND THEN HAVE A SOCIAL MEETING AT 6.30am!! Would I recommend? NO, go elsewhere and save £100.00

The family suite we were in was quite small and half no division between the childrens' beds and the double. We saw that other family suites were bigger and had the division so it seems to be luck of the draw. In any case, the smaller room we were in was not really good value compared to the others. Otherwise the hotel is quite nice. Was a bit disappointed that children could only use the pool uring a short window.

Avoid - major refurbishment needed

There was a large red & brown stain on the carpet of our room which looked suspiciously like blood; this was supposedly one of the newer refurbished rooms. There were also stains all over the walls and a white substance on the phone receiver. Really disgusting. No robes in the cupboards (available to rent for £7!), no fridge, no room service menu. No aircon and the rooms get extremely hot in the day as they have skylights; so if you want to keep it cool the room must be entirely blacked out. Overall an unpleasant stay. The spa is just a tepid pool with dirty floors. Definitely not a 4* spa hotel as advertised. The standard of the bathrooms in particular is really poor - cleaner than the carpets; but equipment that looks about 20 years old. A dribbling shower and a bath with mdf peeling off the sides. If they upgraded the top floor rooms with aircon and refurbished the bathrooms this would be a much more pleasant experience - but it was overall unpleasant and oppressive. Small upside is that the family rooms are large - they would be ok in winter when you can keep the blinds open; but sitting in a blacked out hot dirty room is not our idea of a relaxing stay. We spent as much time as possible out of the hotel. We did complain about the disgusting carpets - no attempt was made to make it up or compensate us; although they did move us to a hotter room with a worse bathroom but newer carpet. All in all not recommended! The general vibe in the public areas was “Wetherspoons chic”

I stayed here 3 separate times on my recent trip and was able to stay in 3 different rooms.

Pros:
- The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating
- Shortbread & sparkling/still water free each day in the room
- Shower pressure in all rooms was excellent
- The towel warmer was a nice feature
- Fans available
- Plenty of parkin,g including EV charging
- Front house rooms are charming and larg,e but could do with a deep clean and a bit of a glow up in terms of paint and curtain cleaning.
- Facilities within the hotel are fantastic
- Windows open in rooms for fresh air

Cons:
- Musky/sweaty smell in old rooms
- Lack of an elevator in front house
- Power outage every morning, sometimes multiple times
- No conditioner or amenities inthe bathroom
- No air conditioner inthe front house rooms
- Hard pillows unless in upgraded rooms
- Back house 'modern' rooms are falling apart eg, paint coming off the wall and lack of working fixtures (side lamps)
- Cleaning wasnt the best, checked into a room where side drawers had questionable items left and soap in the shower didnt get refilled for days
- Weird places for powerpoints, not close to bed.
- No minibar or place to keep things cold unless in upgraded rooms.

Overall I had a pleasant stay each time and would stay here again, just things to be mindful of.
The property is historical and charming, and the location is good. It is quiet and about a 10-20-minute drive to main destinations like Bishop Auckland or Darlington.

Perfect for a 1 night stay

Check in was busy due to many guests arriving at the same time but the staff dealt with it well and were very friendly. It's a beatiful old building with nice modern rooms. The bathroom was big with a walk in shower and a large bath.
The restaurant dinner was really very good and also great service from the staff.
I did not use the spa or pool facilities so can't comment on them.

Comfy beds, not a very relaxing spa area so pleased we hadn't come for a spa day! Especially the spa cafe, loud music instead of spa music and just overall a little noisier than you want if you have come for a spa day.
Breakfast wasn't great, beans were not filled up the whole time and waited but couldn't get anyones attention to ask for more, coffee absolutely foul too. The tables are also so close together that I had someone's butt in my face when trying to eat as he had come over to another table to speak to friends. Jacuzzi bath was lovely, the grounds are really pretty and there is a lot to do. Although I'm not in a hurry to come back I do think my kids would love it. Overall it's about what I expected for the price, could definitely do with a refurb in some areas

Lovely place to stay.

This is the second stay at this hotel, lovely friendly efficient staff and nice spacious rooms. Very nice restaurant and public areas. Well placed to explore the area.

Like - swimming pool, massage service.

Didn't like - two of the breakfast staff. The big woman and the small skinny man, their attitude were terrible. They should be sent on a customer service training course. Shame

A beautiful old building, full of history yet offering a surprising amount of facilities. Lovely pool area, stunning grounds, great breakfast. Really great value for money and I would definitely stay again.

Abbie on reception was BRILLIANT

We arrived tired after travelling most of the day but found that we had made an error on the booking. Abbie on reception took it upon herself to sort out the error and advised us to relax in the bar while she sorted it out.
We cannot thank her enough for her help and kindness which really made our stay so very special.
