We stayed in room 5 on the first floor for 2 nights.
Pros: great location for visiting the Cotswolds. Stow is a lovely place and the pub is very welcoming. Our room was large and the bed very comfortable and clean.
Cons: we could hear the neighbours walking across the floor upstairs late at night. We could also hear them flushing their loo and using the shower.
The walls up the stairs to the rooms were very marked and need a good paint refresh. The worst thing for me was the issue with carpet moth, both on the stairs landing and also in the room behind the desk under the tv. It’s so apparent that it’s like an infestation and needs serious pest control attention. It affected my stay as it made the place feel dirty. For that reason I wouldn’t recommend and won’t be returning. It is very overpriced for what you get.

The Stag was a perfect “pub inn” with nice/comfortable rooms, and friendly staff, and great restaurant to come back to each evening. The property is located on the town center and convenient to other pubs, restaurants, and shops. I would highly recommend The Stag.

When I checked in I was taken to what they call the Crows Nest. It was a super small room. The stairs were rickety to get to the room. The sink in one area the shower in another and the toilet in a closet. There was a broken makeup mirror. It was useless. There was a full size mirror you wanted to go outside your room on the landing. Shower was either hot water or freezing cold. Coffee maker doesn’t work well. When I talked with the Manager, he said “you booked through Expedia and this is what you get. We don’t like Expedia, you should have booked directly through us and paid the higher price. The wait staff looked like they wanted to be somewhere else instead of working. Food was mediocre. I scheduled a breakfast time. I ordered avocado toast with poached eggs and asked for a side of bacon. I received avocado toast with bacon no poached eggs. Would not recommend this place to anyone and definitely wouldn’t stay there ever again.

Lovely.... if you have quiet neighbours!

The room itself was lovely, clean, a comfortable bed, nice tea / coffee, and a nice view of the street below.

Unfortunately we were woken up at 6:40am by troops of chatty people going backwards and forwards past our door, stomping up and down to / from the room upstairs and the fire door banging closed (which then shook our door on it's hinges). When we raised this at checkout, the staff did not seem to care and pretty much said well it's an old building, it is a bit creaky... Very disappointing when we were hoping for a quiet, child-free getaway.

Breakfast was a bit chaotic, took a while for missing items to be replenished on the buffet.

The staff were really friendly and helpful. The buffet breakfast was excellent - this was included in the Expedia price. You could pay extra for a cooked breakfast if wanted but there was really no need. The location, for Stow on the Wold, couldn’t be bettered. Downstairs had some ‘rustic charm’ which was fine, just the right side of characterful.
Unfortunately our room was not so great. It was small - I guess that’s the price we paid so I can’t really complain about that. But our view was just of the fire escape, the curtain rail was falling off the wall and the floorboards were so uneven and squeaky that it made us worried how much noise we were making just walking in the room. But our main issue was the noise outside our room. Our door was immediately adjacent to another bedroom door, to the point that it sounded like they were coming in our room every time they opened their door. Which they did a lot, even in the small hours. When they talked outside our room it sounded like they were in our room talking to us. And just outside the room was a fire door which banged every time it closed, which was often. We could hear the cleaners vacuuming at 7am and the constant hum of a communal milk fridge just outside the door.
Obviously I’ve no idea what the other rooms are like - maybe we just had the one bad one. But it was a shame because the other aspects of the hotel were good but we wouldn’t go back based on the state of our room (called Roe).

We liked the location and breakfast. We asked to be moved for our evening meal because it was noisy in the bar but the restaurant was quiet.
The breakfast was good and the evening meal was okay.
The stairs are difficult to climb with luggage and care must be taken. Our bed was comfortable and the bathroom was good although it is difficult to get into the shower in the Doe room if you have mobility issues.

Can’t wait to come back.

Beautiful hotel right on the town square. Really warm, friendly welcome when we arrived. Had checked in online before we arrived so were given our keys and shown to our room. Room was on the small side (we stayed in Fawn) but really not a problem as we were out all day. Great bathroom and shower, tea and coffee making gear in the room and fresh water and milk in fridges around the hotel so just help yourself and so much better than cartons of UHT!

Continental breakfast was included and there was loads of choice, cooked alternatives available to order all freshly made.

Everything is within walking distance, some amazing restaurants nearby. Was actually disappointed we didn’t eat in the restaurant as the menu looked fab, again with loads of choices to suit everyone.

Stow is so pretty, loads of tea rooms, pubs and shops to wander around. We visited Bourton and Burford, both within a 10-15 minute drive so it’s a great base for exploring.

Sad to leave and we’ll definitely be back. Can’t fault the hotel or staff, nothing was too much trouble for them.

The accommodation was in keeping with the character of the property, however, this meant our room was compact for a 5 night stay.
The staff were very attentive and the service was very good, the inclusive breakfast offering was sufficient as we don't eat cooked breakfast.
When eating in the hotel at night the food was very nice, but the vegetarian options were limited to 2 choices and remained the same during our stay which led to us eating twice in the hotel.
One issue we did have was that every table was permanently set for dining and meant that there wasnt anywhere to use as a break out space to read a book etc...
We would however, consider returning to the property at a quieter time and for a more sensible 2 to 3 night stay as we were assured in quieter times the seating in by the top bar wouldn't necessarily be set for dining.
We are also more aware that larger rooms are available to book.

This is an historic pub/inn that is definitely unique. Rooms small, but workable. Because of the age of the building, lighting is dim and the path to guest rooms is not direct - up one set of stairs, down 3, up 2, down the hall, up another set of stairs. Not a lot of fun with luggage, but ok. Staff helpful. Because I am dealing with some vision issues, improved lighting especially on stairs would be a help. Continental breakfast included with room was sufficient. Dinner at the inn was quite good.

It started off well. Check in was great dinner on the Wednesday was lovely. I had booked dinner on the Thursday but did want the same dish (only two veggie options) I was assured the chef would sort. My table was booked for 8 it was quite busy and they had given my table away and suggested I sat in the restaurant (which was empty, not nice being in my own) the member of staff then informed me it was a different chef on duty who was not prepared to make even an omelette for me. I left to eat elsewhere. I won’t be returning.

Your advertising is very wrong in the sizing of the rooms, we had two large bags which we could not open, the room is the size of the bed plus the bedside table, very very small. We also had the persons before remains still on the floor, which we asked them to be removed. I don’t think a vacuum or duster has been used in these room for a very long time. Black mould around windows bathroom corners not touched, something very wrong with the cleaning team. Waited 1hour for single topped pie to be cooked, had to order another bottle of wine as we had finished the first one waiting. We would not recommend this hotel and maybe hotels.com need to check the sizes of the rooms, as we always look at that when traveling with large bags. I would say the room was about 8m2

Check-in was easy and all staff were excellent.

Breakfasts were delicious and filling.

Parking out back which was great as the square out front gets very busy.

Evening meals were excellent (don’t forget to book, it’s a busy town and places to eat are limited)!

(If you’re not great with a lot of stairs I’d recommend checking with the hotel before booking your room, getting to some of the top floor rooms with luggage could be a struggle for some).

Enjoyed our stay overall. The hotel is old and taking that into account it is in dire need of a revamp. The paintwork is chipped and carpets on stairwell have seen better days. The room was clean but thick dust on the hinges of the doors and various other places let it down. The mould on the windows and dust on the blinds, again, a bit of a let down. The door outside our room banged and creaked with every entry/exit, so was dusturbing until everyone was in and settled for the night. However, ending on a high, the food was amazing, we had dinner in the restaurant and breakfast, just hope the kitchen had a better cleaner.

The staff were accommodating and friendly. Room was well prepared, warm and comfortable, but lighting levels were challenging. Disappointing there was no housekeeping after first day..at least a top up of tea and coffee. Difficult to access front door and stairs were a challenge for people with mobility issues.

Although the staff were friendly and helpful, the hotel/room itself needs more attention. There was a significant mould/damp issue in the hallway leading up to the room, and a more subtle but still prominent damp issue in the room itself.
In addition to this, the room could have been cleaned better, we found dirt on surfaces and insects crawling on the pillow and dead insects left by the sink.
The step leading to the bathroom has a big piece of metal coming away from it, which is a huge safety issue. The tub leaks, and the double shower while a good idea in theory, has a large opening that leaves you both feeling quite chilly.
The concerning thing is that we mentioned the cleanliness, damp and safety issues when checking out and the member of staff just said okay as long as the rest of your stay was okay - eek. Considering we paid almost £200 for the night, there are much nicer boutique hotels nearby in a similar price point that would be worth staying at instead.
Had the staff taken our concerns and feedback more seriously we would potentially have considered staying again, but the lack of response was disappointing, which is a shame as all our other interactions with staff were great.

We stayed 3 nights in the stag room in the old part of the hotel which was tired and needed a good old clean and a lot more attention to detail. At £130 it was quite expensive too. The floors sloped and so did the bed which I guess is just a feature of the hotel but made sleeping a little uncomfortable. However the windows also let water in. Boyfriends suitcase was pretty wet in the morning. There is also nowhere to put anything down, nowhere to put the suitcases down. We had just come down from the Peak District so had cases on us. There were no hooks to hang anything on either aside from a wardrobe, no table to put anything on, I can’t bend down so don’t want to put things on the sloping floor. The owner did bring up a table for me in the end (that is after he snapped at me for them being busy & short staffed!). Shower was blocked too. Breakfast was good, the young boy was particularly attentive and friendly, no comment on the rest of the servers however. We both travel around the UK a lot so have stayed in a lot of hotels and are in our mid 40s. However aside from the initial checking in, we did not feel particularly welcome and felt like a burden. Appreciate the staff are busy but you are in hospitality so need to be more hospitable and make us feel welcome and nothing should be a problem. The rooms were not serviced either, appreciate its down to Covid but we were here 3 nights and you should be more attentive. Unlikely that we will return or recommend.

Stow is a beautiful village with lots old world charm.
Stag in on the Square right in the centre with parking outside or in their car park.
The staff made us very welcome and the room was spacious and well equipped.
However there was a strong mouldy smell coming from outside the door due to moth eaten carpet and a leak in the corridor.
That needs immediate addressing as for the price of the room that is unacceptable.
Definitely would return to Stow but unless the damp problem was sorted would maybe stay somewhere else.

We stayed in room 8, which is a large room, with a huge bed and stylish décor (with a toilet, separate to the shower). All the staff were great, from the friendly welcome we received upon arrival, to the bar staff and the breakfast staff.

Whilst all the breakfast and bar staff were great, there was one guy in particular who looked after us very well, in the bar and one lady in particular at breakfast (dog lover) - sorry we didn't get your names. Thank you for looking after us all. We had a great time.

I would recommend staying here. It is very dog friendly too (although dogs shouldn't really be allowed on the seats, IMV! We only saw once incident of this).

Free parking is available at the rear of the property, however, there is limited availability and it is slightly tight for larger (longer) type cars. We got parked there though, so again, thank you.

First impressions at check in were poor. Staff just ignored us. Rooms in need of some TLC. .....carpets minging! No kettle in the room but a coffee maker which only gave tepid water. Most staff made no effort and we weren’t asked by anybody if everything was ok. The bar manager told another member of staff to ignore the phone.....which I’d tried to ring to no avail to book a table. Breakfast appeared to be reheated and scramble egg microwaved. We didn’t have dinner there for these reasons. It’s an expensive hotel and value for money is disgraceful. We wouldn’t stay again or recommend

Liked the general style of the hotel and room - was maybe a little tired round the edges. Great location, right in centre of Stow.
No bathrobes in room although there was a bath - would have been a nice touch to have them.
The welcome and staff service was generally polite and efficient if a bit short and rushed. Doesn’t take much to give a warm welcome to guests when they arrive and adds to the relaxing feel of the holiday.
Boiled eggs at breakfast were very underdone on both mornings ie. Nearly raw. Had a cheeseboard one night in the restaurant and the cheese was obviously cheap supermarket kind that lacked in taste and texture. Small details could be improved upon if they want guests to return for future visits.

The hotel itself is great but the staff is really rude. When I arrived at 9am (we came from NYC on a redeye so got in super early) I went to the front desk to check in and the woman checking me in was not at all friendly- in fact she said \"Its too early for you to check in so the room isn't ready\" Which I knew to be false because this hotel has specific rooms and the one we booked was available online for the night before so we knew no one was staying there. I asked her \"Well, don't you want to know when your guests are here so that in case the room is ready early, that you're able to accommodate them, or hold their bags for them while they go out and/or wait for the room?\" and then she rolled her eyes and checked- then said our room was actually availble. After being shown to our rooms by another employee, I asked her \"What time does breakfast end?\" Her immediate response was \"Well, you aren't entitled to breakfast because you are checking in so early and your reservation only allows you breakfast for the morning after.\" I then asked \"Well, can I atleast pay for my breakfast separately- we just got in and are hungry.\" The girl said \"No, you have to go somewhere else in town for breakfast.\" This whole check in process alone was just a bad start to this stay. The door to the room was also SO horrible to open and close. You had to use all your force to pull it open & shut, each time with a very loud screech and bang closed.

My stay at the Stag

Lovely Hotel with lots of character.
Staff were very friendly.
Restaurant food was very nice.
Parking is a little difficult in the rear car park.

Enjoyed out stay on the whole

Found staff really friendly and helpful. Had two really nice meals in the restaurant. Wish i read the reviews before we booked. We were booked into the Muntjac room which is right above the bar. So didnt sleep until the last punter left and then were woken when the staff cleaned the fire places first thing in the morning. Unfortunately we were unable to open the window so there was condensation on the windows since the extractor fan didnt work in the bathroom.

Room 7 great! please clean the timber above bed!

The hotel was great, food excellent and staff very friendly. Room 7 was fabulous but when i pointed out the dust in the room above the bed where the cleaner has clearly avoided they seemed not to care too much. Clearly i wasnt talking to the owner.

Our room (Buck) was lacking in basic amenities such as bedside furniture and chairs and the small wardrobe was inadequate. The window in the room is very old and dilapidated - it needs replacing.

Comfortable stay

Room much smaller than expected but comfortable. Very friendly staff, good breakfasts and good evening menu. Wasn’t warned about being closed until 3pm due to Travellers Fair, hotel was all closed up on arrival.

This property has lots of charm, a fantastic location, and free parking. It’s updated nicely and has an awesome breakfast. The rooms are a bit small but works well for a night or 2 stop over

The room, shower, breakfast, beds were all great. The condition of the hotel was just a little in need of fresh paint. We were put in the first room above the bar, and a dog was in the bar and barking all the way until 11 pm. But they had a very nice garden out in back, and convenient parking, too.

Quaint but ...

We stayed in Room 7 which was part of the newly renovated hostel. New decor is quite cool but room was small, shower was in a cupboard and the noise from Room 11 above us was unbelievable! You could hear every foot step. I would stay there again but not in Room 7.
