Friendly and helpful staff. Great location to walk everywhere in Tamarindo. Right across from the beach and coffee and can have breakfast on the beach. Pool area is nice to relax and sit outside. Great outdoor kitchen to use, we would definitely go back. Wonderful time, thank you!

The premium room is not premium. Very noisy and could hear kids fighting next door. Ceiling fan was so noisy we could t use it. But it is in a good location if you want to be in the thick of things.

Great location, room was always clean. Most comfortable bed of our entire holiday. Pool area is very nice.
Older hotel and the street noise can be a bit much but was much quieter after Saturday. Very friendly staff and their dogs.

The room we were assigned to didn't meet our expectations so we asked if there was another room they can move us to and the answer was no. We were scheduled to stay for 4 nights and didn't feel we would be able to relax and enjoy our time. So we spent the first night looking for another hotel in the area and moved to it the next day. Also during the first night I had an accident and fell on the sidewalk near the hotel and Hotel MarRey didn't have any first aid available, told me to just wash my injured hand with soap and didn't seem to much care of the pain I was in.

Clean room. The pool area was lovely the photos don’t do it justice. Just steps from the beach and many restaurants. Also they had a small outdoor kitchen with pots and utensils you could use which I wish I had known about before hand as I would have brought more groceries. Our room had a fridge, microwave and coffee pot as well. Everything was clean and well taken care of. We loved it!

First issue, there was a security camera outside our room that we found directed towards our bathroom room window. It was located about 2 feet from the window and should have been facing anywhere but right into our bathroom. Very creepy. The street noise was very loud and the patio doors didn’t close all the way. I asked for help to operate the safe and was told I would have to wait until the next day for the manager. The next day, the same guy came to the room and showed me how to operate it. Not sure why he couldn’t have done this the first day. I just felt like he couldn’t be bothered. They provided a coffee machine, but no coffee.

Location of this place was awesome. So close to everything, beach, restaurants, bars, etc.

Gaby, one of the hosts was super helpful. We had some noise issues during the first night, as our room was very close to the major road. Upon bringing this to her attention, she arranged for us to move to another room the next day.
Place was clean and the pool was an added bonus.

The shower kept leaking, bathroom floor would be soaked with water. We Informed the front staff, gentleman came in and used towels to soak up all the water, wasn’t repaired so everyday we had the same issues. Very, very, noisy, you hear everything going on outside. House keeping just enters your room before asking if services are needed. No “Do Not Disturb sign provided by Hotel. Not beach front. No option to have a massages on the beach, only pool side offered. Night time security sleeps while on the job, did not make me feel safe at all, multiple time we were able to go in and out of the hotel without him noticing due to him sleeping.

We picked this hotel do to the location, location was good and we were kind of in the middle of everything from the beach, shops, and nightlife. As others have stated the noise is pretty loud at night. Not so much the music from the clubs but from the noise of cars and motorcycles racing up and down to street on each side of the hotel. I do believe that if we visit again we would probably pay a little more and be beach front.
This is a no frills hotel, very basic, no restaurant or bar. But it is clean and everyone there is very friendly and helpful.

The hotel has no sound barrier, it is located on two busy streets, so you can hear everything outside. Very difficult for sleeping.

The bathroom shower doesn't drain well, so you are showering in a pool of water.

There was very little room to put your things as there is no closet or shelve space. Some hooks on the walls in the room would have helped. We luggage/bags are just placed on the floor, while the room is already small.

Conveniently located across the street from the beach. But I would trade to live 5 min walk away from the main street so I can sleep.

I loved the location of Hotel Mar Rey. It was close to everything. The estuary was a 15 minute walk and that was the furthest thing from me. The pool is clean, the shared outdoor kitchen is great, and the staff is very friendly. The hotel is older but they do a great job keeping it up. I would stay here again!

Hotel Mar Rey is in an excellent location—right across from public beach access, making it super convenient for enjoying the beach or catching the sunset. It's also surrounded by restaurants, shops, cafés, and a pharmacy. While the hotel is older, it’s clean and well-maintained, with nice bedding. We appreciated the staff’s quick response when we reported a slow water flow in the shower—it was resolved promptly.

The main downsides were some noise from outside (understandable given the age of the building and limited soundproofing) and the lack of breakfast or complimentary coffee.

Overall, we had a comfortable and pleasant stay.

I like the pool, location, and cleanliness.
The owners and their family live in the hotel. All their dogs are on site and unrestrained. They bark and awake the guests at night and in the mornings, early. My complaints to the owner were met with shrugs. Sleeping is a problem here. Even time by the delightful pool is disturbed. We stayed on the beach our last few days to get away from the constant barking. It was not like this last year. I love dogs, but I love my sleep and quiet on vacation. I will stay elsewhere when I return to Tamarindo in the future.

I recently stayed at this hotel and overall, it was an okay experience. The room was somewhat clean—not spotless, but acceptable for a short stay.
Had the basic amenities. Bonus for having a fridge and microwave in the room. The staff were generally friendly and helpful, no major complaints there.

There were a couple of issues worth noting:
One, there were holes in the window screens, which allowed bugs to get in, and two, the main door didn’t fully meet the floor, leaving a gap that allowed critters to come inside. These are small but important details that really affect comfort.

On the positive side, the area around the hotel was nice and peaceful, which added to the overall relaxation of the trip. The shared kitchen and outdoor barbecue space was a great feature and made the place feel more social and convenient. It would’ve been even better if charcoal had been provided—or even better, if they had a gas barbecue to eliminate the need for charcoal altogether.

If you’re not too picky and just need a simple place to stay, this hotel is a decent option, especially if you plan to enjoy the outdoor features. With a few upgrades, it could be a much better experience

The Mar Rey was convenient to everything. We’ve staying in Tamarindo many times and wanted to be on the beach this time. We did however end up leaving two days early.
A few things … we were in the end room facing the parking lot and street. Which was quite noisy at night. We came back to our room one evening and there was a woman sitting on our patio who walked off the street to wait for her taxi. It was sorta unsettling having someone sitting at our door when we arrived back. She was nice and apologetic.
There is security that sits there at night. We did not feel unsafe. Also be aware that the cleaning staff enters your room to clean without warning and I came back to use the bathroom after being at the pool and a lady was cleaning the room. We had all of our belongings out in the room. And I had to ask her to leave so I could use the bathroom. I didn’t feel like anyone was dishonest BUT we would have liked to be able to put our money and passports in safe before strangers entered. Would stay again just prefer a room inside the hotel complex not facing road.

We stayed here for a week in March and it was fantastic! The staff were INCREDIBLE, they live on site and they have a few pet dogs that free roam the property. It has a beautiful pool and is conveniently located right in the main area of town and literally just STEPS to the ocean. You’ll notice the reviews mention how noisy the hotel is because of its location and it definitely is noisy but it really didn’t bother us because we played so hard during the day we crashed hard at night and most of the bars and parties in the area wrapped up between 10pm-midnight.
We would choose to stay here again, hands down.

The hotel is affordable, comfortable and in a prime location in Tamarindo. You can walk to the beach and all of the shops and restaurants in the area within minutes. This isn’t a resort, but has everything you need if you enjoy spending the majority of your time enjoying the beach, town, culture, and being more independent than a resort setting. The pool is a very nice spot to come back to and is a lovely setting, also has an outdoor cooking area if you want to prepare some of your own meals. They will also help you book tours/experiences as well if you aren’t as independent when traveling internationally. Staff were very kind and felt like good friends by the time we left!

We stayed for seven days at this lovely hotel. Staff was very friendly and helpful in booking transport to and from airport and our sunset cruise. We had a king bed that was comfortable. The hotel is right in the center of the action and across the street from the beach. The pool area was very cute, and the water was refreshing from the sun. It can get very noisy at night but a couple of more of margaritas helped to drown out the noise. Overall would recommend staying here.

Location was the best. Walk to the beach in 3 minutes. Coffee Cafe, restaurants bars, live music, and a grocery store all around the hotel. The pool was surrounded by beautiful trees and plants making it feel tropical. The property was gated and fenced making us feel very safe. Our room was cleaned each day. The bed was comfortable and the air conditioner worked great, we slept good. We viewed other properties in the area for a future trip this fall. We will be staying at hotel Mar Rey! Great location for access to the beach, dining, shops, banks, tour operators, and all the action. I also loved the large balcony with view of the pool, private courtyard like setting, and outdoor kitchen. the rooms are simple and have all the basics plus small fridge and small microwave. Rooms are spacious and comfortable.

Note: The downtown area of Tamarindo is concentrated around one main road and a couple side streets. The entire area can be a bit noisy in the evening until midnight due to the music at open bars, motorcycles, and other motorists. Only the outskirts of the town seemed to be protected from this. It’s quite lively! For in-town options this hotel seemed to be one of the best.

I think the property is nice, big pool, AC works nice ! The bed was comfortable and your in the middle of it all. Steps from the beach and steps from all restaurant l. Recommend this stay for 2 nights at most. Sunset at the beach was beautiful and great restaurants with a vibrant nightlife all around.hotel had dogs and cats every where.

Lovely hotel, perfect location and very kind staff. The hotel has 2 dogs, one big and small who are super cute, and are friendly but will generally ignore you and not be in your face if you don't want them to be.

The pool had a few leaves/ bugs floating around and could be skimmed more often, but it was still perfectly fine to swim in.

This place was amazing! Literally on the main corner of the town, it was comfortable and welcoming after a hot day on the beach. We had a standard king that was on the bottom floor that opened out to the pool. It was very safe and contained. They locked the gates at night. Our bed was very comfortable with nice sheets and pillows. The walk in shower could fit a small family and there were ample cabinets for storage. There was a small fridge with ice in it which was wonderful. The decor was hand carved wood.

We saw some negative reviews we want to refute. There was some construction noise during the day but we never heard our neighbors. Yes you need to bring beach towels but that’s normal at a hotel. There was a nice outdoor kitchen (pictured) where you could grill your own food. It’s in the middle of downtown but never seemed rowdy or unsafe. There was always someone on staff in the parking lot and entrance.

The staff was incredible. The place was spotless. We are already booking another trip to stay here!

I enjoyed staying at Mar Rey the pool is nice the location is great but I wouldn’t stay there if you’re looking for a quiet place to sleep. Music runs until late hours on the weekends.

The location was fantastic you could walk to many restaurants and bars. The rooms were small but king bed was comfortable. No ice or glasses available and no hot water.
