Loved this traditional stay in Kyoto, the breakfast was great and the tub in the bathroom was so relaxing after a long day of walking. The only thing is if you don’t have a car rental it can be tricky planning your day based on the bus routes. The bus stop is only a minute walk away but if you miss a bus you may have to wait a while for the next one. Overall loved staying here!

Very clean room including the bathroom and shower considering it is shared. The staff was very nice and accommodating towards us even as foreigners. Staying at a ryokan is a bit of a culture shock but after the first night it you warm up to it and get a great experience. Food was also delicious.

Staff was very respectful and friendly.
The coffee shop had amazing tea and coffee.
We didn’t venture out there for shops so can’t say anything about other nearby shopping stores.
Rooms were spacious and clean. They had a common room to use with sofa etc. Loved the stay in this ryokan.

Beautiful room, really comfortable and fairly quiet despite close proximity to the other rooms.
Staff were lovely, spoke brilliant English and were very friendly showing me around.
It is slightly further from town than some options but there are a ton of buses that pass and these are very cheap to use. Come regularly enough that they are easy to use with Suica.

The staff here are the absolute best. Through a mistake all of my cash, in an envelope, was thrown away. I approached the staff asking if they had seen it, clearly I was panicking. They helped tear our room apart to look for it. When that resulted in nothing, they waited with us for the cleaning crew, who then dug through the trash to find the bag from our specific room. Inside was all my money still in a sealed envelope. I will be forever grateful for all the effort they went through to help me.

The room was spotless, the lamdscaping/ gardens were incredible, the linens were so warm and comfortable and the food (half board and breakfast) was out of this world! So good. Such a privilege to get to stay here. Word of advice, choose the Japanese breakfast over the American breakfast, it's amazing! Thanks for a wondergul stay.

We enjoyed the ryokan experience, sleeping on futons and tatami mats. The desugn of the building incorporated beautiful wood panelling, with rooms around a central landscaped garden. We ate breakfast, lunch and dinner there. All meals delicious.

First time in Kyoto and we had the best time in this traditional feeling Japanese ryoken. Staff was incredibly kind and accommodating. Their restaurant was traditional, inexpensive and very yummy. No complaints at all, would go back!!! Immaculate gardens around the property, good coffee shop on the parking lots, convenience store close by, close to a major bus route. Absolutely breathtaking neighborhood.

Great Ryokan experience

Great Ryokan experience for our family. Our space was very spacious with two rooms and a large clean bathroom with the toilet, sink and shower/bath areas separate which helps when there are four in your party! Fresh towels were delivered daily. We had a private garden to enjoy in the morning and although further out of town, there were a few bus options that worked for us and we would definitely stay here again if we found ourselves in Kyoto again.

Disappointing: shared living room.

Living room is shared by several units, and there’s a need to climb steep stairs tot he second floor where the living room and bedroom are. Take note there is no onsen bath.

At this price point, the food is not of amazing quality, quantity or variety. My previous night ryokan stay had onsen and MUCH better food, at USD100 less per night. Although the garden was nice and bathroom was in nice condition.

Super unique experience off the beaten path to stay in a beautiful Ryokan. Would be great for a value with larger families, but be prepared to understand the busses or get a taxi, not a ton to do in the immediate area. On the other hand, staff was nice, limited but plenty of English with my terrible Japanese. Food was excellent and beautifully plated. Rooms were truly amazing, one of my favorite things on my travels.

In need of work, 0 amenities in terms if toiletries etc. could not match any of the other places we stayed. Disappointing

I usually don't review stays, but i had to for this Ryokan Yamazaki! The property is clean, quiet, beautiful and peaceful. Above all, the service we received was outstanding. The staff are very kind and patient. They were very understanding with foreigners as well, and explained everything we needed. I was very sick to my stomach when i arrived, due to motion sickness. My husband went to ask for directions to a pharmacy, and the staff drove him there personally and helped him pick out medicine! He didn't ask, and they insisted. Akagi was so wonderful and sweet. I firmly believe the rest, peace and kindness here turned around my health and helped me enjoy the rest of my trip. i can't wait to come back. Arigato gozaimasu!! 🙇‍♀️

I believe that their rates are too overpriced for what they offer. We stayed in a room with our own amenities which I understand is priced more than the shared baths rooms. However, I was expecting the food to be more indulgent as I’m personally okay with a more traditional and less than perfectly manicured space. But the dinner and breakfast was honestly the most disappointing thing. I’ve had many kaiseki style meals before in varying level of quality and I was expecting more for the price we paid. The lighting in the restaurant is also awful so even though the closed off garden is beautiful, the overpriced not-so great food and the poor ambience just made the overall experience not that great.

I was okay to trek over to the countryside as that was what we were looking for as I see that’s most of the people’s issue with the place. Honesty location was fine for us because we wanted to be farther away. We did have to take a bus and a taxi so it was a mission but it was part of the experience.

The room we were in was good for us as we had our own bath rooms. Unfortunately the disappointing meals overshadows the rest of our experience. If they were priced cheaper then that makes more sense.

It was an amazing opportunity to stay in a proper ryokan during my trip. The hotel itself is lovely, the facilities are excellent, the staff are brilliant too. For the two nights I stayed there I had my evening meal in the restuarant downstairs, the meals being excellent value for money.

My only issue was really the transport links. I ended up having to walk (up hill) from the tram station for about half an hour to get to the hotel. I tried to call the hotel beforehand to let them know I was going to be late checking in and could they help at all with my journey to actually get to the them, however the phone number didn't work which at the time was a bit of an issue.

The hotel is in a beautiful area, it's quite residential but the nearest combini is about 10-15mins uphill. The walk is kind of interesting though so y'know pros and cons.

The room I stayed in was beautiful. It was a large traditional tatami room and they provide yukata to wear which was very nice. Great bathroom facilities too.

We booked the premier garden suite and LOVED it. My partner is Japanese and said it reminded him of his grandmothers house growing up. The room is just a simple/beautiful traditional Japanese style room. Although the garden area could use some sprucing up, it was very nice/relaxing. We had a car and I do not not that I would have stayed here otherwise, the location is off the beaten path. That being said, the location was one of the main reasons we choose this place. We felt like locals in a sense, so we loved the location. If your an early riser like me, there are no coffee shops such within walking distance. If you want a “traditional Japanese” style room, definitely consider premier suite. No onsen but the bathroom was SO nice, it was like having our own private sentó.

We LOVED this place! We got the room with a private bathroom and garden. The garden was beautiful and our room was very large and spacious. The food they served in the restaurant was delicious and very well priced. Very nice staff.

The place is located a bit away from the city, which is just what we wanted. It is located a very short 3 min walk from the bus stop. Very easily accessible. They will ship your luggage for you through a company if you ask (I recommend cuz it’s not fun taking luggage in a bus).

Overall loved this place and would come back again.

The Ryokan is good. Our room was smaller than expected. I guess that is the case with most places to stay in Japan. There was certainly some smoke smell near our rooms on the days we stayed here. I wonder if the people next door were smoking or maybe the ones before that. It was like the smell was infused in the walls and when we opened our room door, the smell was stronger.

The service was very personal and the food was good with variety and affordability. The place was clean with a beautiful garden in the middle of the restaurant portion. The bedrooms had more room than expected.

My only negative comment would be regarding the sleeping situation. If you are not prepared for a small firm futton mattress with a small pillow you may want to pay for one of the more luxurious rooms. Also the location is a little outside of town so you will need to either walk a little ways or take one of the many busses in the area. Very peaceful.

The property was very far from a station and it was quite inconvenient to hall luggage up a hill on very small sidewalks for half an hour. That being said, the property and the surrounding area were beautiful and the nearest convenience store was a 10min walk which wasn’t too bad and was a nice walk when the weather was good.

The staff were very nice and accommodating.

The most disappointing thing was that when we arrived we found out access to the garden was not included in with the room that we booked, and the windows faced the street, the only place we could see it was from two small windows in the hallway.

The entire floor had two share two toilets and 1 very small shower. There was no soap in the bathrooms and no conditioner in the shower.

The rooms were not in very good shape, pieces were peeling off the walls, there were bugs in the room. However, the AC was very good.

Everything was very expensive, both the room and food, especially considering we did not get access to the garden, a bathtub, or even hand soap.

It just felt as though the prices were very high and the quality was very low, but staff was nice.

Too far to take heavy luggage. There is about a 30 minute walk from the nearest station. If you have a lot of luggage it is difficult to get on a bus to there.

If you get a room with a “shared bath” you get two toilets and ONE shower between SIX rooms for 2 people each. One shower wasn’t even enough when four of us in the rooms wanted to use it. That was the biggest downside.

You also do not get any direct access to the garden or restaurant if you get a “shared bath” room. We weren’t able to step foot in the garden. We could only see it from two small windows in the communal area of our rooms.

The restaurant prices are also pretty expensive. The garden was beautiful though and the staff were nice. I think it may be worth it if you get a room with a bathroom, but the cheapest is completely not worth it in my opinion. We stayed at a Ryokan half the price in Nara and we had a toilet in our room and the “Shared bath” area was at least an onsen set up shared bath.

It’s still an acceptable place to stay, but keep in mind the hike up there and excluding the “shared bath” rooms all together.

Old fashioned Japanese ryokan with restaurant.

Local traditional ryokan with a restaurant in the foothills of Kyoto. Quiet. Friendly staff. Excellent Japanese breakfast and good dinners. The garden featured in the photos is lovely and well worth visiting. Overall we were happy with our stay and certainly enjoyed the genuine Japanese surroundings. The rooms themselves were a bit worn but the air conditioner worked.

We stayed here because if the more “traditional” setting and near to one of the temples we wanted to see. However it was not walkable to anywhere, we used Uber a lot. We did walk to the temple but it was about 25 min. And I never found any public baths at the hotel. We took an Uber to a spa near by. It was very nice, clean, calming, quiet but not sure I would stay here a second time.

Our stay at Ryokan Yamazaki was delightful. We stayed for 3 nights. The ryokan was clean and gorgeous! The staff took amazing care of us! It might not provide some of the more premium amenities, but definitely worth a consideration. Definitely consider the half-board option. The Kaiseki dinner was delicious! I would definitely recommend this ryokan especially for the stellar service!

Just be warned that the ryokan is a little ways out. It's about 40 minute bus ride from Kyoto station. There's two bus stops within 5 minutes of the ryokan. We didn't really see it as a problem, but the extended amount of travel might be discouraging to some.

The best part of the stay was enjoying the meals! I was amazingly surprised by the delicious food during breakfast and dinner!
The facilities are old and the bedroom was very simple, the second night we had to search for towels ourselves because they took ours and didn’t replace them.
The location is the farthest I believe but the bus that gets you there is part of the Japan Rail pass and since it’s just one road it would be difficult to get lost. Our room was closest to the road so we could hear the traffic but the food made up for all the inconvenience! It was a good experience!

This was a beautiful hotel, traditional Japanese, which is what we wanted. I would highly recommend it. It is outside of the main downtown so we only wish we had planned to stay longer than 1 night. The taxis were easier and faster then the buses, but there is a bus from the JR train station.

The staff are very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, the breakfast isn't served until 7:00 a.m. making it difficult to catch an early bus into the train station for day trips to other areas.
Otherwise, the food is good and well presented.
The rooms and overall decor are a little worn so could use some freshening up. Also, the bathes were shut down so we could only take showers --- a real shortcoming if you want an authentic Japanese ryokan experience.

A great place to start from on your tour of Kyoto

Though a very brief stay, the manager was a very polite and kind man. The staff were also kind and helpful.

Worth mentioning the owner can speak good English which is helpful.

The place is very quaint and offers traditional breakfasts in either an American or Japanese style. It has a beautiful little garden beside the breakfast room.

There is WiFi so you can plan out your day trip.

The rooms were clean.

I found this place to be the perfect starting point for my trip around Kyoto. From here I hiked across to the Daikakuji Temple which is about a 45-60 minute walk to get to, but takes you through all the rural parts of Japan that are very beautiful to look at.

I would recommend this place to anyone looking to stay somewhere to experience a few of the simpler aspects of traditional Japanese culture.

My kids weren't happy with the bugs and they were bitten by mosquitoes. It wasn't a lot of bites and we are in a rural area.
It was nice experience for us just be aware that you are sharing bathrooms with others.
I would love to have stayed longer and explore the area a bit more...

Nice, family style ryokan. We stayed in the annex building which is about 2 blocks walk away from the main ryokan. It had a lovely garden, though the building itself was a bit old and the paper sliding doors were ripped and had patches in some places. Pro-tip: Since the prices were all the same for the annex we booked the Deluxe room and it was huge! There was a little tea area with a kotatsu where you could sit and see the garden that felt really homey. I caught glimpses of other visitor's annex rooms that looked smaller.

Bathrooms are shared and you can definitely hear other travelers at night. You may also see them lounging about if you go out into the common areas, of which there are many. I didn't mind as they weren't super noisy and it was nice to say hi in the mornings. The only thing was the wifi router became unplugged and only 1 of 3 hotspots worked... on the last day we followed the cables and discovered the problem, which was solved simply by plugging the power back in.

To be honest we thought it was a bit dirty and not that pleasant at first, but the ryokan really grew on us every day and by the end of our stay it felt like coming home, which I did not experience at any other hotels on my Japan trip. It's truly a homey place. Short walk to the bus stop, though do note it is is a bit far from city center. Shared areas were a bit run down but clean and well kept

Beautiful well equipped rooms, peaceful, with views of the hills, easy to get to by bus from Kyoto station. Very good location for visiting World Heritage temple sites and Arashiyama district and Takao.

Charming Family Run Ryokan

Although outside of the main tourist area of Kyoto and thus might be slightly difficult to get to, you get to see a different side of Japan that you might not be able to see otherwise, and from my experience, it was definitely worth it. To get to this ryokan, there are a couple buses you can take that land you only about a 2-3 minute walk away, but be sure to check the schedule in advance because they tend to only run every 30 minutes to an hour depending on the time of day. Taxi is also an option, but they tend to be fairly expensive, so I would definitely take the buses if you can.
Because this ryokan is located in a very suburban neighborhood, things tend to close early, so if you plan to come in late, plan to eat before, or there is one restaurant about a 15-20 minute walk away. There is also a restaurant within the ryokan itself, and the last orders for dinner closes at 7:30.
When you arrive, you can choose to reserve breakfast for the following morning, and they have two choices: a Western-style breakfast and a Japanese-style breakfast. Our group chose the Japanese-style breakfast; it was delicious and only ran us about 10 dollars each. The ryokan is definitely foreigner-friendly, and the staff were all very nice and accommodating. Overall, it was a great experience, would definitely recommend!

Helpful English-speaking staff. It's much better than apartments or affordable hotels where you can only communicate during office ours by email or phone.

Ryokan Stay

The ryokan is a little out of the way, we loved it for this reason. Quick cab ride to the bamboo grove early in the morning before it was crowded. Also allowed for a quick escape when it was. The gardens in the ryokan are beautiful. Restaurant is good. Staff were exceptionally helpful & accommodating, all were very lovely. Rooms are older style & small but we left each morning around 8-9 & didn’t get back until 8-10pm. Bathroom toilet & bath are shared but this was fine. The JR bus no 3 took us nearly an hour each time. The quickest time was 40 minutes late at night, just so you are aware of this. We would stay again :-)

For 1 night traditional okay - more NO!

Because i really wanted to experience the typical Japanese ryokan, we booked a night here.
Our room (deluxe) was really nice, we had a good view into the garden.
Were on a low budget so we decided to cook our food ourselves. Unfortunately the kitchen was the worst and dirtiest kitchen ive ever seen! Bugs and dirt everywhere- we felt disgusted!
Another thing - the door for the shower cant be locked, we decided to not have a shower :/

This hotel located in an area that is about 45 minutes drive far from Kyoto station
There are no grocery stores or restaurants close to this hotel. The hotel does own a restaurant
however, if you do not like the foods there you will have a little problem.

Sharing bath with others meaning that the privacy is poor.

Very nice ambient, comfy and happy place.

Yamazaki was our base for the first few nights, and it was an excellent choice. Tucked away in a neighbourhood near Asakusa and Minami Senju, it has all a backpacker and pretty much anyone without too much love for luxuries needs. The staff made an incredible job giving the place a great atmosphere and welcoming us, and they could not be more friendly. The very only thing I would have asked for is a tiny bit more emphasis on futon quality: a few hairs and an old sheet were the only down side. In general, very recommended.

Small local ryokan, in outskirts of town

Small little ryokan on the outskirts of town, very basic and barebones, but gets the job done. There are several reviews that say it's far, but it's a 15-20 minute walk down into Kyoto to a couple train lines, which was fun to do, in order to learn more about the locals / local life. There is a JR3 line bus that runs right by the property every 30 minutes, as well as a local bus \"8\" that utilizes similar stops as well, both are good options. I wish they did run later at night, as it was a scurry to get everything done in order to get the JR3 bus in the evening at 9-930. Still, was a decent place to stay, might stay right in town next time in order to get the full picture of nightlife.

Peaceful ryokan in a lovely location.

Lovely ryokan. Very peaceful and the staff were very pleasant. It's within walking distance of Ninnaji and you can get to Kinkakuji by taking the JR 8 bus to the university and then walking for a little, or hopping on the number 59 bus. I hope to return again next time I'm in Japan.
