The room was clean and simple, as a hermitage should be. But extremely comfortable and stylish. The staff were superb, both helpful/attentive and informed about the setting. The restaurants on site are wonderful and the options in the village are plentiful and well run. The highlight above all is the access to the Abbey. Private and at night. Wow.

Аtmosphere and ambience, everything was above our expectations. It is especially nice that staying at the hotel you can explore the Abbey until midnight. Everything is open and there are crowds free. The smell of the herbs in the gardens is simply divine!
Oh, and don't skip breakfast under any circumstances. The experience is unique.

A fabulous hotel. What a privilege to be able to stay in Fontevraud-l’Abbaye Abbey. The ability to walk around after the public has gone up to 12.30 at night was amazing! The room was clean and comfortable and the hotel was beautiful.
Take time to go to the restaurant in the Cloisters. Such an experience . Very highly recommend

The setting is quite spectacular and the hotel rooms are stylish if a little small. Unfortunately, my husband accidentally, kicked his glasses under the bed and when we tried to retrieve them saw that cleaning under the bed is not a priority. A lot of dust etc. Otherwise the room was spotless.
I had also emailed the hotel a few days before asking if we could eat in the restaurant. They only told me on arrival that it was fully booked until October. It would have been helpful to have known in advance. We took the option of a ‘picnic hamper’ which was disappointing to say the least.
The breakfast was slightly underwhelming. A nice selection of items from local producers but luke warm coffee out of a thermos jug is not what I would expect from a hotel of this standard. I think they could serve a pot of coffee or tea at the table without too much trouble.
The reception staff were extremely pleasant and helpful I must say.

My husband and I stayed at Fontevraud Abbey for a night and it was honestly the highlight of our France trip. There is a light show next week and they were practicing which was great that we got a free preview of it! Plus we hadn't realised we get to view the abbey until midnight and the next day as included in the price of our hotel stay. The bar and food service was also great. The only thing I would say is that we weren't notified that the bar closed at 10 and we did manage to thankfully get 1 drink from the front desk staff at 10.30-ish but I know several people did not know about this closing time. But overall would absolutely recommend staying at this hotel!

This is my second stay at the hotel. I had a wonderful experience previously and wanted to begin with that. After my recent business trip, I was disappointed.

Our rooms had no functioning hot water in our rooms (Jardin) room the morning of our departure. This was unfortunate because I was hoping to walk the grounds before we left for our meeting. Instead, we lingered hoping to shower, and eventually left unshowered and instead had a mediocre breakfast. Overall, a major letdown.

All of that considered I will try again but next time, stay in the main building. The jardin rooms are small and one of my group complained of this.

Beautiful, calm and restorative.

The whole atmosphere of the hotel is so calm and restorative. The setting, in the ancien abbey, is simply lovely. Our room was delightful. Breakfast was splendid. The staff were helpful and friendly, with the service over all, of the highest quality. It is essential to book dinner in the restaunt as soon as you can, as there are not many covers, so were not able to eat there.

Best night sleep in many years for both myself and my partner! The garden room was super comfortable and clean. The place itself ia gorgeous and so calming. The receptionist was great! Only one thing to faulter, we didn't have breakfast as we thought it was way overpriced and that was the only downside really.

I love Fontevraud. This is a special place - between the history of the abbey, the amazing restaurant, the comfortable and clean rooms, the dedication to eco-friendliness, and on and on.

Our only complaint, and this might sound very American, is the lack of climate control. On a very stuffy, hot afternoon, our west-facing, top-floor room was HOT. We opened windows but were immediately faced with clouds of gnats and insects that swarmed our room. We asked for a fan, which the front desk clerk said he would bring up. He called back 10 minutes later to say \"no fans because of the Covid situation\". ?????? No fans in our own room because of Covid??? Ummmmmmm, Ok.... Their dedication to providing an eco-friendly spot is commendable, but a winter-weight duvet on the bed, no fans, no ventilation, no fan, crazy insects means no sleep, and no sleep means not a good visit.

This was our second visit to Fontevraud, and we will definitely be back - just not in summer, and we will definitely request to NOT be on the top floor where the rooms bake in the sunlight.

Nice having access to abbey. But hotel has much to be desired: no air conditioning or even fans in excessively warm rooms (they said no fans because of COVID??); no water in rooms or refrig, no tea pot or coffee, amenities lacking. Big problem: access to hotel is only through parking lot some ways away, or through public access lobby to Abbey site, which is often crowded and requires you to show vax cards each time. Rooms are poorly designed with windows which allow for no privacy..no curtains, just shutters. Staff tried to be helpful, but clearly this hotel not up to four star status. Great breakfast/20 euros a person.

History-Lover's Dream. Walk the Grounds all night

Fontevraud L'Hotel was one of the most unique and incredible hotel experiences I have ever had.

The beautiful, peaceful surrounding of this absolutely gorgeous hotel made it lovely. However, it was the experience of being able to walk the grounds of this enormous abbey, enter buildings, meditate in the cloister, spend time in the crypt at any time (I walked the grounds until almost midnight) that proved truly magical.

Steeped in the long, complicated history of France, this place is a history-lover's dream.

I highly recommend this experience for anyone in love with France who wants to love it even more.

The ambience of the property was amazing. Quiet and peaceful, to wander around early morning and late afternoon was wonderful. The comfort room in the hotel was on the small side with little hanging space but had all of the other amenities that we needed. There was no air conditioning so the room was rather warm but we were able to open the windows at night which cooled the temperature.

Amazing hotel in a fantastic setting

The hotel was lovely and clean and very modern set inside the historical monument of Fondevraud. The restaurant and the bar were equally impressive and the best thing about the hotel was that it gave after-hours access to the abbey, up until 1am which was great because it was all lit up in the dark.
The only down side was the lack of air conditioning meant that the room got very hot but the staff were extremely helpful and provided us with cold water, mist sprays and dabs which helped a lot!

Nice accoidations. Was a great perk that you have full access to the entire site even after it closes to the general public. The one downside is that if you don’t make dinner reservations weeks in advance it will book up. Our issue was that every restaurant in Town was booked up. We were forced to use room service. This was nice but diner was about $200 there are no tables except a very low coffee table in the rooms. Eating a $200 meal on the floor was not fun.

Also be aware there is no air conditiining and it was hot. The lower roo cooled down nicely with the windows open (no screens to keep bugs out, but loft was unbearably hot.

Well appointed, clean, great restaurant, spectacular grounds, 10 minute walk to the sweet village. You have complete access to the Abbaye day and night.
A couple of odd things - nobody brought our suitcases to the room, we had to retrieve them ourselves and our dinner reservation for the restaurant, although confirmed through the app, was not confirmed with the restaurant.

We enjoyed our stay. The facilities were amazing. The room was small and a bit warm. There was no air conditioning but a fan unit did help a bit. We only ate breakfast but the setting was amazing. The Anbey was a bit far from anything though Chinon and Sameur were a nice drive. We had a fantastic dinner at a local restaurant based on the staffs recommendation. Worth a stay understanding it is a bit remote.

High concept comfort

This is extremely interesting “high concept” accommodation. The design of the facilities and furnishings evokes the monastic heritage while maintaining high modern comfort. Breakfast was served in the dining room, formerly the cloister. Dinner is a gourmet experience which, like the furnishings, evokes monastic asceticism with imaginative and surprising adaptations of the traditions. Staying at the hotel gives 24-hour access to the extensive monastic site and gardens. Wandering the mostly deserted grounds and buildings in early morning or twilight is a marvellous experience. The location is convenient for making daytrips in the area with parking within the abbey walls.

Definitely recommend staying here. This is a truly unique hotel with small but comfortable and tastefully decorated rooms. The grounds are fabulous. A real privilege that hotel guests can explore the Abbey freely after hours.
Would advise against breakfast here - it is too over-priced considering you're only getting a limited continental breakfast. Would recommend going to the great little boulangerie in the village instead!
Also, make sure you book in advance if you want to eat at the restaurant during your stay. We were not informed of this and as it's so popular there was no availability for the 3 days we were there.

Absolutely beautiful!! You have free parking, free access to the abbey and grounds. It was an absolutely beautiful renovation. The room was extremely small and I would not recommend the Comfort rooms unless you are a couple or a single. The bathrooms were great with a fantastic shower! They were very high tech but the iPad did not really serve any great purpose.

The restaurant was fully booked when we arrived so if you want to eat on premises make sure to make a reservation ahead of time.

Breakfast was very expensive for what you received, it was 18 Euros a person and service was a little slow.

Overall a gorgeous hotel and having access to the grounds at night was a very unique experience. Decent service and a decent room with a lot of amenities.

Great hotel is a stunning setting.

Great place to stay. The Abby grounds are stunning which you have free access to as part of your stay. The hotel is surrounded by rolling fields of sunflowers and vines. The hotel has free bikes which are in good condition so you can explore the area. We cycled to Château du Petit Thouars (6kn away) for some wine tasting and Chinon (20km away). The hotel is clean and the staff are super friendly. Very enjoyable stay.

Fabulous situation but not equipped as a 4* hotel

Rooms are quite basic for this level of establishment. The recent refurbishment is quite spartan. The bed was comfortable. The TV did not work properly nor did the WiFi. The carpet was fitted by a complete amateur with the pieces not in same direction so already major fraying .the breakfast was excellent though.

Amazing hotel in Abbey. Room has no Air conditioning any you really can't open window because of the bugs attracted with light on. There is a fan but really no fresh air in the room. Atmosphere is great and you can access the abbey. Restaurant is fine dining with only set menu. 85 and 105 euro per person. Breakfast is ok but with very limited choices. It is a good experience after all.

Romantic, 5 Star Experience! Beyond Expectation!

We stayed at 12 different hotels during our trip to Europe including the Waldorf Astoria - but this was by far, the best experience we have ever had. And it is not just a stay, it is a total experience! The service is impeccable! The facility is meticulously maintained and stunningly beautiful. It is what staying a night in Heaven might be like. There is a beautiful view out of any window (which you can open up to hear the sparrows singing in the morning).

The abbey is open 247 to guests. You can tour the abbey at night which is amazing. There is a tiny village offering additional dining options but their in-house dining is top notch. Breakfast is awesome.

We had free run of the Abbey, the rooms were very nice and properly decorated for the atmosphere, the food was outstanding, and the staff were helpful and accommodating. My husband and I enjoyed everything about this hotel and Abbey. We stayed during Christmas Eve and Christmas, and we loved having the Abbey all to ourselves during Christmas Eve and Christmas. The Abbey was closed during Christmas Day, but the hotel guest had access still to explore the Abbey during the day and night. We had a great time exploring it during the night, alone, just the two of us. The grounds look beautiful during the winter time. It is a very quiet and tranquil place to stay. We are from the U.S and had some great rest and relaxations after our weekend in Paris. We stayed in the Junior suite and it was very comfortable. For your information, the restaurant was closed during Christmas Eve and day, but the staff called us prior to inform us that we can make reservations to their bar on Christmas Eve. We had a delicious meal and experience at the bar that night. Next door to the Abbey is a beautiful small town which you can explore. Again everything is closed during Christmas Day, but that was ok for us since we love to take photographs and enjoy peaceful walks in a beautiful setting such as this French town.

Beautiful Hotel of grandeur character

I only had an overnight stop with my teenage children, however the family room I booked was incredibly well thought out and laid out, offering space and privacy.
The hotel forms part of the overall complex of the ancient Abbey, which you have full access to as a guest of the hotel. Unfortunately the hotel restaurant was already fully booked when we arrived, but the staff were more than helpful in securing us a table at a local restaurant at such short notice.
the entire experience was very impressive and we will be returning to this hotel again at the first opportunity.

The third and last day of our stay, the room was dirty and we even didn't have any toilet paper!!

On arrival at the hotel we discovered that there had been a mistake in the booking. The manager at first insisted this was our fault, despite showing her the email containing the details of the booking. She then said they had not received the email and that people came to the hotel making things up, implying that was what I was doing. When it was made clear that they had received the email (other items in the email had been responded to), she then said that it was not their responsibility that there was an error as we had booked through Expedia and that they could not provide us with a room. I have travelled a great deal and it is natural that mistakes are from time to time made, by all parties. However it was not the fact of the mistake that caused the problem, it was the rude, arrogant and dismissive attitude of the manager. The setting of the hotel is beautiful, but the attitude was that they were doing you a favour in letting you stay there. The alternative hotel we eventually found although far lower down the scale in terms of stars, was delightful, friendly and helpful at all times.

Beautiful setting in the grounds of the Abbey, unfortunately they had forgotten a key ingredient of any Hotel especially 4 star. look after your guests.
Hotel rang us the day before to inform us that the restaurant would not be open. No problem, when we arrived we asked if it was possible to eat some simple food in the bar, we were told this could be done but we had to book it for a certain time. This we did but later realised that nobody manned the bar and we would probably be the only guests in there. Tried to cancel the bar booking using the ipad provided, but reception put the phone down so I had to go down and tell them. There was no water or refreshments in the room. Nowhere to sit outside in the evening for a drink, bar gave every impression it was closed, no staff or customers. Tiny lounge area with one Nespresso machine, no milk or sugar. Not a 4 star hotel.

Be wary of opening times!!!

This was one of the most enchanting places I have ever stayed. The staff were faultless and a the setting incredible. In the evening we wondered about the Abby and the grounds till 1am, all the exhibitions open and it was our own private museum for the night, like another world. ONE word of warning though!!!!! We came to this hotel for the reputation of the chef and the restaurant. We only had one night... A Tueaday. What Hotels.com does not tell you is that the restaurant and amazing bar; the centrepieces of the hotel are both CLOSED on Monday and Tuesday evenings!! Therefor the hotel lacked any kind of atmosphere and you could not even enjoy a drink other than a nespresso in the Coffe room; thus we were disappointed.

Calm and tranquility.

Beautiful hotel and Abbey which you are able to walk around at leisure even late at night to get a different atmosphere. The hotel is an oasis of calm and tranquility and perfect to relax and reset.

Architecturally and Technologically Amazing

Wonderful hotel. The service was quite good. Most of the staff at the reception area were fluent in English. The technology is truly amazing. The architecture quite interesting. A very minimalistic hotel environment. We didn't have an opportunity to eat in the restaurant for dinner as they were totally booked the three evenings we were there, so I would recommend you make a reservation in advance. In addition, the restaurant is expensive at 58 Euros each and that doesn't include wine. We had breakfast there (15 Euro each). The breakfast entailed breads, cuissants, butter, jam, a variety of fruit juices, water, coffee, tea, cheeses, meats-jambon, salami varieties-, cereals, yogurt, fruit salad (mainly canned fruits). The staff was able to book us restaurant reservations at nearby restaurants. We would definitely stay there again even though you're out in the middle of nowhere.

Great Hotel next to Abbey.

Arrived and picked up from car park taken to hotel and helped with luggage to room. Given advice regarding services etc and use of mini laptop to manage stay. Many visitors in ground of Abbey during afternoon but you need to experience walking around grounds during the evening when it is empty. Even in the morning before the visitors return for the following day is a joy. Food was excellent both evening and breakfast. Design and materials used in renovation of Abbey and the conversion of the building into a Hotel were top quality.

Quiet, contemporary getaway with excellent food

Amazing contemporary hotel with an almost monastic, minimalist feel. Very quiet and tranquil, opened recently so everything very up-to-date. The restaurant was excellent. The biggest perk is being allowed to wander around the abbey and grounds (a major tourist attraction) after the tourists have left at the end of the day. Only quibble was no air conditioning, it gets very hot in the Loire in summer - perhaps a better choice in cooler months.

Great hotel for history buffs

The rooms are basic but have all necessary features for a comfortable stay. The two best features are the breakfast and the fact that hotel guests have unrestricted access to the abbey outside public opening hours. We were able to wander around the abbey and grounds in peace and enjoy the history of the place.

The best place we have stayed in France

We had a really magical stay here. The hotel is really beautiful and every little detail of its design is well considered. We really loved everything about it; our room was spotlessly clean and very comfortable, the breakfast was delicious with home made jams, baked eggs, and the grounds are beautiful. But the best part is that you are free to explore the abbey and the art instillations after hours. After the craziness of summer crowds we found ourselves looking at Eleanor of Aquitaine's effigy without anyone else around.

Beautiful hotel in an impeccable serene setting.

We were taken back by the beauty of this place. They have done an absolute outstanding job of restoring the Abbey and grounds and it is right out of a fairy tale. The hotel is minimalistic, modern but at the same time rustic and casual. The restaurant served us one of the best meals of my entire life. Everything was well done, everything. Wish we could have stayed longer, and one day hope to come back.

Fantastic getaway

My wife had a very relaxing stay at Fontevraud. The setting is so peaceful and relaxing. The rooms were clean, quiet and functional and the staff was very helpful. The real highlight was having access to the entire abbey at night, both inside and out. It was fantastic to tour the abbey in peace with no one around.

the check in staff in the evening was really quite unhelpful, no greeting at arrival and they missed to tell us that we needed a code to re-enter the premises. The hotel is in a lovely location, the room design pleasant although the rooms are far too small. At breakfast the staff were a little friendlier, however, only half the buffet was ready when we arrived 15 mins after the official breakfast time

This hotel is part of the complex including the abbey and the rest of the site is open to hotel guests 24 hrs a day. The hotel rooms are a little stark in design but comfortable.

Excellent séjour. Nous avons dormi une nuit. Personnel très avenant, chambre superbe. Cadre exceptionnel . Pouvoir profiter de la visite de toute l'abbaye comprise dans le prix de la chambre est un bon plus (surtout que nous ne le savions pas et avons failli payer la visite avant d'arriver à l'hôtel). La restauration pique nique \"panier de l' ermitage\" est très bonne, mais mériterait d'être un peu plus copieuse pour ce tarif (ne serait ce que quelques amuse-bouche). Parfait pour un week-end en amoureux si vous appréciez ce genre de lieux à visiter.

Accueil parfait, repas au restaurant surprenant culinairement et vraiment très bon (note spéciale pour l’asperge).
Cadre très agréable et atypique. Visite nocturne de l’abbaye qui est un vrai plus.
3e fois que je vais dans cet hôtel et ce ne sera pas la dernière!
