Email on the day of stay to say that the hotel was only open 8-12 in the morning and that my room key was in the door to my room. Didn’t even know where to find my room! Then the key wouldn’t come out the door, rang the emergency number and yes, someone did come to help. No restaurant open or bar and for a loan female travelling, it wasn’t a pleasant experience at all.
Radiator in the bathroom didn’t work so the whole room was freezing. Had to stand in a towel as the floor tiles were really cold. On checkout, no “how was your stay”, just paid my bill and left. Won’t be staying there again. £90 for a bed!

In 44 years of marriage and traveling the accommodations were not acceptable for seniors in late 60’s. We were expected to climb a flight of steep stairs and with baggage. Given the smallest room on property, a double fouton type bed, too low, bed that was no more than a foot and a half off floor. I caught my shoe one of the platform legs at 68 and fell flat on my face. This room was dangerous. I disclose accessibility needs on every booking yet got overlooked. We always book a king or 2 queens due to my wife’s disability. That was never acknowledged. After traveling over 20 hours we were exhausted, hungry and dehydrated. At approximately 6:00 we asked if we could take dinner up to room, eat and rest. We were denied any food stating they never allow food in the rooms. The room was nothing like the description and were unable to eat due to exhaustion and the inability to get downstairs to eat. We weren’t helped at time of check-in with WiFi and weren’t able to call for even water. This stay was unacceptable and coming clear from the US extremely disappointing as we’ve saved for years for this vacation. I showed the girl who was housekeeping the website and she offered info that the room we were in was not on the website.
To top things off, I didn’t have a chance to pay through Hotels.com due to internet issues on the 23rd and at breakfast without my knowledge host charged our room in their currency costing time and a half. Please make this right. Tim Richardson.

On a major road, up from 5am as the HGVs driving past made the room shake.

No reception, key was in the door.

No answer to the 5 calls I made on my 250 mile journey ( Google maps and Google told me the hotel was closed)

No restaurant for evening meal, breakfast (they did advise of this ahead of my arrival).

The food was amazing …. However sadly the room let things down . There was no kettle in our room despite there being a tray with cups , tea /coffee etc . When queried the staff apologised and said they try and find one ……..never happened . The plumbing work in the bathroom left a lot to be desired …… very poor grouting round the bath / shower door …… the shower was extremely loose and felt it would fall off the wall ….. tiles missing from behind the sink . Toilet roll attached to wall opposite the loo ……… you needed arms at least four foot long to reach it ! . Would recommend for eating , not staying .

The hotel room was very clean and comfy and what i considered to be a massive bargain considering the price of hotels in edinburgh for the same night. The service was fantastic but breakfast was phenomenal to service and to food itself. I will be retur ing for my next trip to edinburgh. £120 for the night with breakfast for 2 people with two lattes and two teas. Phenomenal!!!

The staff here are very hospitable. Angus was fabulous in meeting needs. There’s a pretty wooded area to the sides and a nice area to sit outside. The carpet is filthy in the hallway, stairs and in the room. The Sun Inn is on a main road next to the train tracks. Since there is no air conditioning we will sleep with the window open which we couldn’t do because of the traffic noise. The shower was very nice. There was a floor fan which helped tremendously. Dinner and breakfast were good. The rooms need reuniting. There are areas that smell very bad in the hallway like old rubbish. I would not stay here again.

We were disappointed that we arrived for the nights lodging and the restaurant was closed when the advertised hours clearly said it should be open. We arrived just after 18:00. The Sun website said the restaurant was open until 19:00. Google said it was open until 21:00. They directed us to walk a half mile to another pub which was open. Room was quite noisy due to the busy highway in front. Coffee service in the room was messed up. Instead of instant coffee in the container, it was ground coffee with no method of making it. It was not a cheap room, ot should have been executed better.

Our room was clean and comfortable - very charming. Staff were pleasant and helpful. Loved the quaint atmosphere - the meals in the gastropub were very tasty. The only concern we had is that the bed was a little too hard for us and the pillows too soft - but features like that are very subjective so that might not be a problem for you! The Inn is situated on a main road so can get very busy at times. Our room did overlook the road but once the window was closed and blinds drawn it was quieter. Again, didn’t bother us but something to keep in mind if you need peace & quiet. All in all a lovely place to spend a few nights and/or a lovely meal

I booked this property for its convenient location, thinking it would allow me to leave for work later. However, things didn't go as planned. When I went down for breakfast, I was offered a coffee and received it a few minutes later, only to be informed that there was no one available to cook breakfast. The time spent having the coffee meant I couldn't go elsewhere before work.

Additionally, I accidentally paid for my evening meal and stay with my personal card. When I asked the lady to refund me so I could use my work card, she said she couldn't do it and the manager would call me the next day. Unfortunately, that call never came, leaving me without breakfast and unable to get a refund.

Late booking but wish i'd gone elsewhere. Bar etc closed from 6pm due to kitchen maintenance. My room bared NO resemblance to any of the shown photos. Bathroom - light pullcord really dirty, shower over bath controls stiff and loose from wall. Grubby, whole room needs deep clean/refurb. Extremely noisy. it's on a main road. My booked 9am breakfast poor and came late due to being told a chef had rang in sick. I had to ask for orange juice, no toast, no cereals or yoghurts or fruit unless they were hidden. Undercooked flat sausage and egg. Breakfast being late also meant limited time to get sorted before leaving. Never again.

The cost for 2 nights was quite expensive. We have been travelling for 2weeks & this was the most expensive. The deal included breakfast as all the hotels we have used. However this was the only hotel that charged an extra £6.50 if we had porridge or cereal with our breakfast. Only one dish allowed for breakfast. All the other hotels where breakfast was inclusive provided all cerals, porridge, fruit juices, yogurts, toast, plus a full cooked breakfast. Never were we charged extra for cereal. No fruit etc available. Today I had porridge, 2 bacon & 2 eggs. No toast etc so they charged my £6. I call that unfair.

Sun Inn was comfortable and had a homely feel . Accommodating staff were very friendly and welcoming. Our room had a great Mira shower in the bathroom.
A little bit of traffic noise from road outside meant keeping the windows tight shut at night but room did have fan.
Food in the dining area was good, especially the porridge breakfast. Would stay again if in the area

In my honest opinion

This is my honest opinion. It wasn't the worst experience I've had.
The boy Tom is absolutely fantastic well mannered and went above and beyond.
We stayed in the winnie suite. At 1st glance its stunning but as we started to use the hot tub it seems like the jets were not working like there was so kind of fault. The hot tub wasn't very clean ie some flys/grit. Bathroom was lovely and the big bath in bedroom. However we had to ask for hot water to be turned on which i found was a bit weird. Small fridge didn't work properly ie didn't keep drinks cool.
Dinner was ok starters were good. My partner had a burger side order of macaroni that was very dry my steak pie was good. It was a friday and there was only 6 people in the restaurant.
Breakfast was really good we had a few bits from the menu full Breakfast, toast, mushrooms and pancakes with bacon.
In my honest opinion i think some little things need some tlc and it would be a fantastic place.

Only snag is the place is out of range for taxi/uber pickups. They are able to drop off if you’re coming from Edinburgh but best to rely on Eskbank station or a rental car if you need to get back.

This place was probably amazing in the past and could be in the future but at the moment the accommodation is looking tired and worn and is serious need of investment .
I’ve read other reviews and would agree with most regarding the cleanliness of the carpets as well as the need to repaint the doors . The equipment in the rooms also needs updating and cleaning especially the coffee machine which had a tray with old pods in it . The decking and outside space also needs cleaning and varnishing to bring it up to standard .

On a positive the food was really good both the evening meal and the breakfast . Also the service was exceptional, there is a very good team here who made us feel very welcome and nothing was too much bother .
I suspect the current rating is based on historical scores and unless the owners address the basics around the standard of the rooms then this rating will continue to drop based on the accommodation .

I would eat here again in an instant but wouldn’t stay again until the fundamentals were addressed .

Not used to bad food here but it was.

This is my first visit back to the Sun Inn for several years.
I stayed 3 nights and ate in on all three.

Good points: Nice friendly staff, cheap cost of the room.
Normally the dining is very good but! (see below)
The wi-fi was very good.

Bad points: Battered haddock on Mon was over cooked.
Pie on Tues was really good but it cost £5 for some veg. When I'm paying £19 for a pie I really don't expect to have to pay extra for veg.
Burger on Wed night. Again the burger was overcooked and in a bun that I can only describe as stodge. Again £1:50 for a slice of cheese is not great.

You should also be aware that it is on a busy road and rooms 1-4 are quite noisy because there is no double glazing. Room 5 and 6 are at the back but they are the expensive ones.

Experience was a disaster

We did not stay at the Sun Inn having booked abd shown the room which can only describe as a workmans hut. The carpet was dirty with lots of stains there were 2 very small towels size of teatowels whucg were veey grey should have white and well worn. After travelling for 3 hours to be confronted by a room which was in need of a complete update if decor cobwebs in room and bathroom and a television that did not work. We immediately asked for a refund which was granted and we left the premises and went to another hotel which was 50 pounds higher in price the standards of which could not be faulted.

Friendly welcome, food was nice, l9g fire was warming & a nice touch.
However, carpet on the stairs to rooms very dirty, bathroom 3 was in very poor vondition. Bath panel broken & poorly fitting, shower head cracked & leaking. Worst of all was the shower valve, very difficult to operate & adjust temperature, it stayed very hot & could scold if not careful. Shame as i so qanted to lije the place.

I booked this inn based on its proximity to Rosslyn Chapel and Edinburgh. It sits right on a main road, so ask for a back room if possible. The dining options were good. The bathroom was a nice size, but the decor was tired, the lamps were frayed, and the carpet wasn't the cleanest. They seem to concentrate more on the dining, and less so on the rooms. With some updating it would be the perfect overnight stop. The food however, was excellent, and the service was very nice.

Room furnishings looked like they were aiming for 'retro-industrial chic', but just looked shabby and worn. Staff in restaurant were pleasant but food was very slow coming. The menu looked interesting but the dishes generally lacked flavour.

Coming from the fringe in Edinburgh to the Sun Inn , i booked the place because of its good food reviews and its proximity to Rosslyn Chapel , what i did not expect was \" The Winnie Suite \" , a breathtaking Suite . The Sun Inn is the size of a standard Inn when you look at ot from the front , but it had extensions at the back of the Inn which houses the restaurant and \" The Winnie Suite \" ....The Winnie Suite is the finest Suite i have had the priveledge to stay in , very well decorated , option of a shower or a big victorian tub , recess lighting , a super comfy bed and french doors which led out to a stella veranda / deck which had a area to eat and and drink , a hot tub and a sauna . Incredible accomodation . Outstanding in comparison , and i am a world traveller . Furthermore, the staff are super friendly and the food was excellent . The Sun Inn is a gem , 12 minutes by car to Rosslyn Chapel , what more could you ask for .

Had a great 3 day stay. Staff were very freindly and accommodating. Room was spotless and serviced daily. We had breakfast included and you could choose whatever you wanted from an extensive menu. Bus stop to Edinburgh was 5 mins walk away and cost £2 for a 50 min ride, or £5 for a day ticket. Only down side, it was on a very busy noisy road but it didn't affect our stay. Such a shame that it is 7hrs drive from our home or we would come here often.

Very friendly and helpful staff. There is a main road just outside the Inn, and the trucks going past can cause a little bit of a rumble (and the mirror rattled in the room with the big ones) but the bed is very comfortable and easy to fall asleep in.

Bathroom is a little tired (how about a clean string to turn the light on and off with while you figure out the refurb?) but the location was right for my needs.

I missed out on trying the breakfast (8:30 on a weekend and I had an early start) so maybe next time...

Nice hotel - FANTASTIC staff

Room was comfortable, thought there was some street noise. There is plenty of parking, and the hotel is convenient to either drive to Edinburgh or take the train. The restaurant is also very nice.

What really made our stay exceptional though, was the gracious and friendly staff!

Our room (#6) was quite large and comfortable. It had access to the deck and there was a hot tub there, but we did not have time to enjoy it.

The only things that could be improved are the water pressure when some other guest must be showering and the mattress is a little bouncy for our taste. These were overcome by the generally above expectations room and the friendly staff.

Nice hotel shame about the road noise

Picked for its closeness to Edinburgh the location for travelling into the city centre was excellent. The reception staff were helpful and friendly with plenty of parking.

The run was quite small and had nowhere to hang or store clothes so ended up living out of my bag. Bed was comfortable. Bathroom was tired and the sink bowl was cracked and damaged but the shower worked well.

Food in the restaurant was good and lived up to its “Gastro” pub claims.

For me sadly the main issue was the road noise from outside. The Sun Inn is on a very busy main road and this noise did not stop all night. This unfortunately led to interrupted sleep.

Fabulous place to stay. Tbe food was superb, staff friendly and hekpful. Wouldnt hesitate in returning.

I stayed on business travel. Room was quite small with no desk to work from. The room did have sky TV however, which was fantastic. Main issue is that breakfast is not served until 8am. That meant I had to delayed my morning meeting until 8.45am. I arrived at breakfast for 8am and was first to be seated. 2 other single guests arrived shortly after me and were asked what drinks they'd like first. 1 guest had received their drinks and food by the time I had been asked hat drink I'd like. I tried to order food at the same time but couldn't. They returned 10 minutes later to take my food order, which left little time to cook and eat (I told them I had to leave at 8.30am). This time came and went, so I had to leave with no breakfast. Very poor..

On a main road so quite a lot oh heavy traffic but quite cute hotel with lovely outside area. Enjoyed the cooked breakfast but not offered more coffee or jams etc or even more orange juice

Great stay

The staff here were great, welcoming and sorted out a little check in hitch very professionally. Breakfast was amazing and our room, the small double was compact, but very clean and perfect for a short stay.

A hidden gem. Outstanding food.

An unexpected last minute find but what a gem! This gastro pub has very comfortable rooms; even better food and it ended up being the best of our entire trip. Do not hesitate to stay here.

The bar closed at 8pm leaving us with nowhere near by go go for a drink.
Room was small and nosey from traffic.

Stayed for business, would come back for holiday!

I was staying for work but would happily stay for a holiday, what an absolute gem! The room I had was fabulous with everything I needed, including big fluffy towels and spotlessly clean. Plenty of parking and a good wi-fi signal in the room just capped it off to be perfect. I enjoyed my evening meals, plenty of choice even though they are operating a limited menu at the moment. My one disappointment was the size of the pudding portion - very small (I had the posset). The steak pie on the next night was scrumptious and big enough that I didn't need a pudding!

This is a little gem located in a place where you just wouldn’t expect to discover such hospitality and quality, if I receive a response from Expedia regarding the booking issue which was nothing to do with the Sun I will certainly return.

Very disappointing

The room had a very bad sewerage smell. There was loud music until the very early hours. No breakfast was provided as stated that there would be and in-fact there were no staff or anyone around to check out at 10:00 am, so we had to just leave the key outside the room as there wasn’t anything else we could do. Overall it was a very poor experience.

Friendly staff, nice atmosphere, room was great
Big bed , sky tv , and filter coffee option.
We didn’t eat here as we were going out.
But food looked amazing.
Would definitely stay and eat here again.
