We were very pleased with our Felixstowe stay at the Orwell.
The room was comfortable and clean.
The evening meal had an indian influence and I tried some interesting and enjoyable dishes.
An adequate breakfast paved the way for the day, after our solid sleep.
So if the need calls for a return to the town then we will stay here.

Convenient location. Stunning bathroom (with shower only) and plenty of toiletries. The TV signal kept getting interrupted. No aircon, only a fan. Noise travelled through from function being held below our room. Old furniture. A fridge in the room would have been nice. Free parking if signed in at Reception. Overall not a bad hotel.

Stayed in a refurbished room, large bed, newly decorated shower room, tea, coffee, kettle and bottled water in the room and toiletries in bathroom.
Easy free parking, excellent roast dinner on Sunday evening, staff all very helpful throughout our stay. Only one minor improvement would be a checkout at 11:00 instead of 10:00 without having to pay a surcharge.
Would definitely recommend.

The location of the hotel was very good. The hotel was a little bit old fashion but the room we stayed was in a section relatively new and clean. Overall the staff was polite and helpful except the lady we first met during the check-in. We asked for a quiet room as we have sent an request message via Expedia in advance but the lady said there was no any message received and all rooms were quite full already before check the computer. As we arrived before the check-in time we asked if we could leave the luggage in the reception, her first reply was \"no\" and then said only could do with small cases. For other questions she just simply replied \"maybe\", \"don't know\" or \"I can't tell you\".

Stayed here several times now and never had a problem. This time we went for a suite and the extra few pounds really was worth it as the rooms were huge and had everything you would want plus as usual very clean. Great location and lovely old building. Only negative is I think they should reserve parking for hotel guests as if they have an event on its first come first served basis. During the day it’s not an issue but I popped out for 20 minutes in the evening and came back to find a choir rehearsing and no parking spaces available.

You can clearly see that the Orwell Hotel was in its day a grand building and even though there has been some refurbishment in the downstairs area of the hotel, the rooms are looking very tired.
Instead of spending the money on a massive, life size elephant out the front of the hotel (yes really) they should be spending the money on updating the showers, toilet roll holders, painting the window frames etc etc.
The bed was comfortable which is always good and the tv in my room was basic but usable.

Sound proofing could be better as I had one night of disturbance from a neighbouring room.

The biggest problem is that the management are not responsive.

I had to raise a complaint about someone ( presumably a random hotel guest ) accessing the lobby desk telephone system and calling my room 2 times at 2:00 in the morning as a prank caller.

I have since emailed the managers 2 times and still have had no response after 5 days.

Needless to say my experience has not been overly positive. A real shame.😳

The room was warm and comfortable.
Not decorated to my taste with maroon walls and carpet with heavy furniture.

There was a rip in the net curtain and a stain on the wall above the kettle
All things i could overcome .
At 6pm the fun started.
Power cut.
Limited lighting in the room
No electricity so no TV and not able to charge my phone
No hot water to wash ,let alone to shower or bathe.
Reception promised in a few minutes all will

No electricity and a complete blackout.
Electricity returned an hour later .
I had just fallen asleep when everything returned .
Except the hot water.
One of the reason i chose this hotel is for the bath,not having one at home i was looking forward to pampering myself.
I had travelled from Cambridge and visited family graves during the day.i suffer from arthritis.
Still no hot water in the morning .
Receptionist Alexis was very professional .
Gave me another room just to shower.so i walked in my pyjamas looking forward to a bath .guess what ?no hot water .
I told them i didn't want to stay another night she said another room will be available at 3pm .
I returned to the hotel at 5.30.
My new room was in a corner with 3 workers renovating the rooms opposite .i left the hotel.
The management will reimburse my stay for 2 night and need your approval .

The bar and lobby areas were very nice. The bedroom was clean but very cold, the bathroom was clean but some tiles were left with no grouting and there were Rawlplugs sticking out that could have been easily trimmed and filled.The water was cold and the shower was a joke, the water pressure was shocking! I found the staff very pleasant but i felt that hearing guests complaining about the same problems was disheartening for them to say the least.

Hotel in middle of being refurbished. Downstairs area very grand & had a lovely dinner in the dining room. Service very friendly.
But room old shabby & not very clean. Nothing like the fairly modern twin room shown on the website. Bathroom was very shabby & shower head so coated in lime scale could only get a very meagrely amount of water.
Room rate wasn’t much but just didn’t reflect website pictures.

The staff are nice and the location is good but the hotel itself is old and shabby. The rooms need to be renovated properly. The furniture and fittings are very old. Many things are covered in dust. Windowpanes are corroded and everything looks quite dirty. The bathroom was big but the toilet seat was in a bad condition and needs replacing. The shower is very small and only a small stream of water comes out. I would not stay again unless the rooms have been fully renovated.

We arrived and were assinged a ‘suite’, room 200, which did not have a seating area separate from the bedroom as in the pictures. It was a large-ish room that was fine, but had the single worst view out of any hotel window i’d ever stayed at! No exaggeration, a couple of walls with corridor windows and a filthy flat roof, with ducting and beer cans. We asked to be moved but the hotel was full. They told us this was the only suite without a view (lucky me). We were comped breakfast for our disappointment.

After a day exploring the town in the sunshine, we came back and decided to try the newly refurbished and reopened restaurant. It looks amazing, but unfortunately the processes involved in delivering food leaves much to be desired. We waited an hour for our order to arrive, as did other diners. When it finally did turn up, they’d got my partner’s order wrong, delivering a dish with cheese despite us telling them she was intolerant. This was taken away and it was a further 10 or so minute wait until a new dish arrived, during which time she sat watching me eat my food and sampling a little of what i had. Not ideal. The food was good but the wait, apparently due to communication and teething isdues, was way, way too long. This didn’t seem to affect the large table of hotel management, who arrived after us but were served straight away.

This hotel could be really good and obviously they are starting to invest after years of neglect but right now it falls well short.

The Hotel and restaurant appeared to be in a period of transition during our stay. It feels like a once grand hotel that had been allowed to slide somewhat and is now on a path to recovery. It is incredibly cheap for what you get
Our room was lovely, spacious, and beautifully decorated. The en suite bathroom was lovely, although the wait for hot water to come through was considerable, as is often the case with hotels of this vintage.
The bed was comfortable with extra pillows etc available in the wardrobe if required.
There were no bedside plugs/charging points which would have been useful.
We didn't eat at the hotel, although the menu looked reasonable.
We had a couple of drinks in the bar, there was a wait for me service as the bar staff were also covering other duties, but the bar was well stocked and reasonably priced.
I'd certainly return in the future.

Another good value stay in the heart of Felixstowe

One night stay in one of the refurbished double rooms, room was well finished and a good size with a good shower in the bathroom and modern illuminated mirror. Beds were comfortable and the room was supplied with a fan, tea, coffee, biscuits and bottled water provided in the room but it would benefit from a kettle that removes from the base so you do not have to unplug from under the table every time. There was an extractor outlet by the window which started up at about 6:30 in preparation for breakfast, maybe an issue for some but did not bother us, view from the room was limited to the roof area but again this was not a problem for us. Breakfast was an improvement on our last stay as the Bain Marie heaters were working under the food which kept it hotter, there was as always a good hot buffet breakfast selection and a continental selection also, good value for money, ample free car parking and staff were as previously very efficient and helpful.

We stayed here for two nights and we were astounded how good the hotel was for the price that we paid.
The room was ample size, spotlessly clean and had everything that we needed.
The staff were all really friendly and welcoming.
The food (both breakfast and dinner) were excellent and great value for money.
We have already booked to return next year.
Particular praise must go to the lady (I don't know her name) that served behind the bar, served the dinners and worked in the breakfast room in the morning. She was really friendly and she didn't stop working. Whatever they are paying her, it's not enough !

There was a fan in the room but the cable wasn’t very long and so at night it was pointless having it on in bed. Great location and lovely old building with a lot of potential. For the price we paid no complaints but had we paid £80 plus I would have had issues. Would we stay again, yes but not in the summer as it would have been way too uncomfortable.

Visible improvements are being made & are still ongoing.
But with that in mind there are few minor issues that leave an impression. My superior room (Room 213) wasn’t that big & torn wallpaper & stained lampshade gave it a bit of an unloved feel. Also for whatever reason the WiFi in the room was slow slow quick quick slow then non existent. Frustrating & when mentioned (not complained) I was reminded it was free. If possible I would have paid for better ! Oh and could someone tidy the car park please as a first impression it’s not good. I visit the hotel often over the past 10 years but still no loyalty or reward scheme so they have no clue whether it’s your first visit or 25th. Still love the building and location.

Things got off to a bad start - there was a problem with the booking, Expedia failed to sort it, we ended up in a room that was below the standard we booked and overall our expectations were not met. The hotel put all of the blame on Expedia and said they often have problems with Expedia bookings.
Some things to note: None of the superior double rooms have a bathtub (contrary to the room description) and the room we were offered (202) was very small, having only a 4ft. 6in bed. and a shower cubicle. The room was certainly not big enough to fit in the sofa that was depicted in the photos on the room description. So to get a bathtub we had to accept a standard double room and our request for a refund of the price difference was refused. The dinner menu is a bit limited and basic, but okay if you are hungry and a bit tired to go out to get supper. Reviews of the buffet breakfast put us off trying it. There are some cafes nearby that serve good coffee.

We enjoyed a lovely quiet couple's getaway while we went to the Ed Sheeran concert in Ipswich. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the hotel was very quiet and relaxing.
The town centre is in walking distance and has some really nice and reasonably priced cafes. There is a short walk to a pebble beach and beautiful gardens.

I’ve broken our stay down into bullet points;
- Good Room. Spacious with TV, kettle, towels, fan! Shower gels and lotions.
- Comfy beds!
- Room was a good temperature
- clean on the most part bar some carpet stains but that’s expected.
- A little odor in the room but nothing too serious
- Staff were friendly!
- Breakfast was good- £10.95 per person for all you can eat buffet with good variety of food (full english, yoghurts, cereal, pastry etc) The food quality wasn’t the best however it was Great value for money!
- The biggest issue we had was the bathroom. The toilet had a temperamental flush and the shower pressure was shocking. The shower came off the wall a few times too with water temperature difficult to get right.
- Overall the stay was good! Great staff who were accommodating and good facilities bar the bathroom.

The property was undergoing a refurbishment during our visit so I can see that there will be improvements to the decor in the future, the room I stayed in 125 was in great condition and seemed to be one of the newer rooms, there was no evening dining on site during our stay due to kitchen refitting, we were provided with plates and cutlery for our takeaway, the staff were always attentive and helpful during our stay so I would return to the hotel in the future if in the area and would like to see the hotel after the refurbishment.

Hotel is in need of some renovation but seems they are doing that. Price reflects so good hotel for the money

The bedroom had been refurbished. Very comfortable. The bathroom was very dated. The shower in particular was very slow. The staff were very helpful. The common areas were in the process being upgraded.

Unfortunately the room I was given was long overdue a refurb - torn curtain, stains, mould, cracks, peeling paint... The list goes on.
The hotel itself and downstairs décor was lovely, however, so maybe I was just unlucky.
