I had stayed here several times before renovation which they apparently did during the pandemic. The categories of rooms have changed so I am not sure of the comparison but basically everything seems a bit upgraded; cleaner, with more modern fixtures and functioning better. Particularly the climate control which was previously an issue in the front rooms with large windows apparently is working well now. As before the staff are friendly and helpful. I don't know how much value is added by the robots roaming around, but this seems to be a thing now in recent renovated hotels in China.

This is my first visit since the covid lockdowns. I had visited many times earlier. They appear to have used the shutdown time well. The room I was in (and I suppose most others) is remodeled Its very clean and comfortable . The breakfast buffet has moved to a larger hall and was excellent. It appears they have robots delivering room service; at least I saw them roaming around

The quality of the interior was very nice, I didn't expect it from a hotel that was so inexpensive. The staff were very professional. Breakfast is also a good deal if purchased when making the reservation, there is a wide selection of Western and Chinese food.

Stylish and well-located

Hotel was easy to find after getting off the metro, right next to an impressive shopping mall with Asian and Western restaurants and brands. They had bands performing there that night too(no noise at the hotel though).Reception staff were not particularly welcoming and the initial impression was that the hotel was a bit run down, especially the cafe area but the room was nice, clean, stylish and spacious. Water pressure was great in the shower and despite being located on a busy road, it was very quiet.Took us 10min by taxi to get to the HK border point.The only downside of staying in that area was that when we wanted to go out for breakfast nearby, there was nowhere apart from Starbucks that opened before 10-11am.Bizarre.

take me three hours to get a room with a walk-in guest pay high price. and the second day we have to change to a different room. the price we paid for 4-star hotel. but overall was not a good experience. will never book this hotel again.

Great location, front desk can be better.

Location is great if you want to explore huaqiangbei. Plenty of upscale malls to eat and shop for other things as well.

Check-in was a bit longer than usual. Receptionist doesnt speak english and told us that our room is very small, which worried us since the room I booked is a king size bed.

She gave us the key eventually, and the room is pretty decent.

Good hotel, perfect location and loud noises

I have mixed feelings towards this hotel.

For the positive side, the hotel is at a perfect location, with walking access to public transports, shops and restaurants; the facilities in the room are abundant; the bed is comfy; the housekeeping service is one of the best I've ever seen; all the staffs are extremely polite.

For the negative side, when checking in, the hotel has difficulty finding my booking for some unknown reason, and it was time-consuming; our room is supposed to be equipped with a king bed, but it is a queen bed by Australiasian standard; the room isn't soundproof, which means we can hear neighbours opening their doors and people walking and talking in the corridor; and finally, our room faces the main Shennan Road. We have limited view but with full access to the noise around. Even if we close the window, we could still hear some traffic noises, which is not negligible.

Some past travellers have mentioned that the hotel staffs have difficulty in speaking English. I cannot provide my own opinion on this issue as I am a native Chinese speaker and I only used Chinese to communicate with the staffs. But I won't be surprised if that is the case.

The hotel and room were clean and comfortable. However the front desk service could have been better. The first gentlemen we encountered struggled with English. The second lady was very unhelpful with trying to get our Wifi to work and unaccommodating in sorting out our bedding arrangements - we had in fact stated we would be a party of 3 adults and required a rollout bed. During our booking on Hotels.com, there was no indication of any additional charges, however the lady informed us that we would be charged for the extra bed and seemed to be full of attitude.
However, the third front desk lady was much more helpful and went the extra mile to get our Wifi finally working.

Great Location close to everything

The Buffett is great, especially if you are looking for western style breakfast. They mix Chinese food with Western food very nicely and the selection is decent. Coffee is also pretty good. It's worth paying the $10 bucks for the breakfast which by US standards is almost free especially for a four-star hotel

Overall a very nice place to stay as its located centrally. I would stay here again.

Clean hotel, great customer service and friendly

The physical condition of the hotel is nothing to be raved about - this deals with the hardware. For such an old hotel, condition is actually not bad. But certainly cannot compare to newer hotels. Overall I am very satisfied with the hardware. However, I am extremely pleased with the software of the hotel - its very friendly and helpful staff; its great customer service. The hotel staff, especially the checkin counter staff were all very friendly and cheerful. This make the start of a very pleasant stay. For the lack of a fantastic hardware, the software part of the hotel certainly make up for it. I would certainly stay at the hotel again, and will definitely get all my colleagues and friends to stay at the Shanghai Hotel too.

Comfortable, Great Value and Great Location

Classic but small Deng-era hotel. The price for Futian era was amazing, with short walk to Metro, easy and quick to both Futian Port(HK crossing) and Shenzhen North Train Station. Stayed here twice in the span of 2 weeks.

My appreciation to the hotel staff(front desk, front door, and floor/cleaning). Friendly, professional and made our stay so great. Well managed and well staffed hotel, keep up the great work.

Nearby shopping malls, restaurants and electronics market. Anything you need, you can get.

Highly recommend.

Older hotel, but unrivaled services and details

Hotel was one of the most prominent in the 90s, and for good reason. Service is still at the same standards as the old days (e.g. they will place a new toothpaste tube near your toothbrush), even though the hotel itself is slightly dated (but renovated). Overall a much better service experience than the large international hotels, and is a great value overall.

Great location, nice facilities, slow internet

Over multiple trips I have found the internet access here to be slow and inconsistent, forcing me to use mobile data to get work done. In the evenings the connection slows to a crawl.

The wireless seems to block VPN connections, which makes access to Google hosted email impossible over the hotel connection.

Other than this issue, the experience in this hotel is comfortable, the restaurant has good western food and it is a great location for any Huaqiangbei business you may be involved in.

Hopefully the hotel will consider upgrading the internet connection.

I had a great stay at this hotel. The room was smaller than the photos and smelt like it was a smoking room but the feel of the hotel was nice and the staff were exceptionally friendly and willing to help.
The staff didn't speak much English to make sure you have some Mandarin before you come and you'll be fine.

This is a very decent hotel I have stayed many times. You have to be careful with room selections. This time I got the best ever. The front rooms are more attractive (have view) but they are HOT because of the large windows and most of the time non-functioning a/c. The back rooms have no view but are more modern and have working airconditioning. Some of the rooms there are small. This time they gave me a really nice one with practically a kitchenette

Never were bedsheets changed.

Bedsheets were never changed. Horrible hotel. Did not refund money for 1 days stay when I checked out earlier (said it was Expedia problem), despite free-cancellation policy. It wasn't a last minute change. I informed them at the time of check in.

Should I make a separate booking for each day separate? Either hotel or Expedia is to be blamed in this case.

The hotel is located well on the metro line, close proximity of diverse restaurants and next to main electronics plaza. There is a 24 hour mini-mart across the road, which is convenient.

A word of caution, they do not have non-smoking rooms. Our room, though clean and spacious, reek of cigarette smell. The beds were comfortable.

This is a nice hotel very close to the Hua Quian Bei electronics markets. The price is good and the staff is very friendly and attentive. I've stayed a few times and will stay again. However in the future I will avoid the \"deluxe\" rooms in the front of the building. The rooms are larger but when it is cool outside they turn off the A/C and the room becomes very very stuffy. We don't need A/C as such but we do need the HVAC system to blow cool air from outside into the room. Those rooms the fan also doesn't move any cool air into the room. They tell you to open the windows but then you get the major traffic noise from the main road in front. And even that doesn't cool the room if the sun is shining into the windows. In my experience the smaller (and cheaper) rooms in the back have HVAC blowers which work and keep the room at more refreshing temperature. Theres no view there and they are smaller but I'd prefer that to being in a room that's 80 degrees inside when its 68 outside.

OMG, this is not a 4 star property us less you let dark places. The room was ok once you get in there but the hallways are dark and full of smoke from the rooms. I asked for non-smoking room and I was told that all the rooms were smoking room. The female front desk clerk refused to help me get transportation to Hong Kong, in fact they would not even call me a cab. You would never expect an international traveler to be refused help by the hotel staff in trying to get from one place to the other.

Most Pathetic Front Desk staff ever

Good things : Rooms, Bathroom, Cleanliness, Location, Food.

Bad things: Rudest and the most mannerless staff you will ever see. The front desk staff totally kills everything good about this hotel as I believe this is a hospitality Industry and the Front desk of this hotel does not even understand \"H\" of hospitality. I booked a double room online, first when I went there, they said they have no booking, after lot of heated argument they finally found the booking, then since were two guys, I asked for 2 single beds but the girl standing at the front desk said this is a \"Double Bed\" room booking, they can not provide 2 \"Single Beds\", so for taking 2 \"Single Beds\", they charged me RMB50 extra .... its just not about the money, the total tone and attitude of the Front Desk was so unwelcoming, I would never suggest anyone to live here.

The hotel was clean, comfy and the desk staff spoke passable English. It was also located conveniently close to the metro station and I consider it good value for the money I paid. There was some minor wear noticeable in the building and room, but nothing of significance. Not a great hotel, but definately functional and fit for purpose - I would stay again.

Excellent all-around experience

I've stayed in a few 3/4-star hotels in China and this one is one of the best. Great service, clean room, great wifi in the room, good counter service (though their English ability was limited). Hotel is less than 5 minutes' walk from Huaqiang Rd stop on the Luobo (green) subway line. Plenty of clean restaurants within 5 minutes' walk from the hotel, most of them with pictures in case you can't order using words! The only minuses, for me, were the breakfast (not much variety, not enough juice) and the neighborhood (a lot of which had a vague smell of urine in the air, including the Huaqiang Rd stop).

Good Value Hotel in Shenzhen

When Shenzhen was a small place, this was the premier hotel (dormitory) for senior government officials. It has long since been passed by a large number of 5 star hotels, but remains an OK place. It is owned by the next door, modern Grand Skylight (more expensive). While this is a good value hotel, right in the Huaquing Bei electronics neighborhood, it is at best a 3 star hotel. The one drawback is that there are only 5 non-smoking rooms and the lowest rates will not qualify for them. Mini-bar is reasonable, nice bathrooms, free internet, flat screen TV with lots of channels. One block walk from subway (line 1)

The hotel lacks largely on guest courtesy.

The Hotel Staff at the reception desk lack courteous and are extremely impolite. While I had to wait long for check-in , other idle hotel staff did nothing to speed-up the process. The check-in staff was not at all helpful with my selection of room or with my request for wi-fi service, though it was stated to be free while booking. In the morning, though there were still 15 mins remaining for the breakfast time to be over, the counter staff bluntly said the time was over and they can't serve anything.

Perfect for an affordable stay close to border

I booked this hotel because of the price but was pleasantly surprised to find a friendly staff and charming decor. ATM around corner. It's also a very short cab ride away from the Hong Kong border. Small but comfortable room, street noise is audible but I just turn up my White Noise and it's gone. It's a no frills hotel, but you don't come to Shenzhen for frills, do you? Would stay again.

The staff were very helpful even though we only spoke English, they went the extra step and spoke to our contact for us as he only spoke Mandarin and then provided us with the English translation. They provided the extra bed for our group after ringing down to the front desk and reminding them. Room very clean, a little dated but still clean and fresh.

My second stay for 10 days...

I returned to this well-located and economical hotel because of the location and convenience to Huaqiang Bei and the MTR. A very good value with a staff who are very caring and attentive. Staff have enough English to help with somewhat complex business requests although the tiny business center is somewhat lacking in equipment. A bonus is the location across the street from Shenzhen central park with excellent running trails and green space. Clean, comfortable and very affordable. An excellent value.

very good hotel

very nice hotel and location in the center of Futian district. nearby many resturants and electronics market. close to subway station.
i recomend it to you and sure will go back there for all my upcoming business trips.

Great

Great hotel within walking dist of all major gadget markets. The restaurant staff on the ground floor have a little to be desired but I will deffinetly stay there again.

Good value

Everything is great. Just have to beware while booking, King standard means \"twin beds\". so a little ambiguous.
Breakfast buffet (optional) does not replenish often after 9am. So Have to be early for breakfast.

Disappointing

Oh dear Shanghai Hotel; what has happened to you. Disappointing is truly the word. I have stayed at the Shanghai four or five times in the last three years and have said some good things about you. This time I had enough after three days and moved next door to the Grand Skylight Hotel.

Your problem is that your rooms at the back (the square rooms) have all been refurbished in recent years but the rooms at the front and sides (the curved rooms) have never been touched. If your guests get a room at the back they are in for a pleasant and comfortable stay. If they are unfortunate enough to get a room at the front or side they will be staying in conditions that are little short of disgusting (for the price). And the rub is, your guests pay the same price whichever room they get. They shouldn't have to complain that they have nowhere to put their clothes except to throw them on the filthy floor; while someone who paid the same price gets a decent room with storage space. Either renovate ALL your rooms or reduce the price of those you are unwilling to renovate.

But for me, it is much easier to trundle my suitcase next door to the Grand Skylight Hotel. Sure it costs a bit more but the standard of the rooms and the uniformity across the board is more than worth the difference. And when you convert the difference into your own currency, it amounts to the equivalent of a few beers a day.

But the staff at Shanghai try their best.

Good Value

This is a conveniently located (Huaqing Bei, subway, boarder) hotel, usually with good rates. This hotel is famous as it was one of the first government dorms when Shenzhen was just a fishing village. It has been updated, of course, but does not compare to the many 5 star hotels Shenzhen has to offer.

Excellent value very near SEG market

The Shanghai is a clean, comfortable no-frills hotel in an excellent location. A two minute walk from the Huaqiang Bei electronics market (huge) and metro station make it a 5-star location. There was some traffic noise from busy Shennan Road during rush hour but at night it was not that bad. A decent western breakfast buffet was available as well. Across the street to the west is a huge park with an excellent running trail. A colleague and I stayed here for 10 days and found everything we needed close by. There's a small business center off the lobby with a PC, scanner and printer which came in handy. Would have liked to have seen a lobby bar but the staff served drinks in the \"library\" sitting area that consisted of a few 2-top and 4-top tables and one large \"conference\" table. Overall a pleasant experience and excellent value. Normally a Marco Polo or Crown guest but I would return to the Shanghai for the location and value.
