Lovely breakfast, indoor pool and sauna are great for colder months and rainy days. Rooms and hotel furnishings are very tasteful and pleasant. Dinner options are very good. Good base for walks and perfect for golf.
Staff is sometimes hard to find, renovations were ongoing and it would have been nice to know about that upfront.

Hotel is aging and not the best upkeep. The real issue is the staff that are rude. Whilst we were there, there was renovation and drilling in front of our door from 9:30 and they created water damage in one of the common rooms downstairs so we were unable to use it. After the first day. For this they made a gesture. However, overall experience was definitely not up to standard.

Staff were nice and tried to please but service was slow. Difficult to get staff attention in the restaurant. The hotel was nice but the area was quite desolate. Very limited options for eating (1 village diner, and a couple of bars)
The golf nearby was excellent and the pick up service was helpful.
We didn’t have a hire car and getting around was hard. We really relied on the pick ups for the guided Levada walks

There's nothing special to do in the mountain area and the morning is pretty cloudy without view, also there's no view from the room. I expected to have better aroma in the room and in the pool and lobby area.
The bad was soft and comfortable, the bath kit was nice, and the breakfast was good.

Arrived at midnight after a long journey to a helpful smiling face. Most comfortable beds. Lovely and peaceful and quiet. Allowed an extended room check out. Good exercise/swimming pool . Lovely gardens Top marks in every way!

Excellent apart from the ants

Room 301 in the main house is a lovely room with Juliet balcony and separate large outdoor terrace. The room is spacious with two armchairs and very comfortable bed.

This would have been a top-notch five-star rating had it not been for the invasion of a few thousand ants. It took me and the horrified housekeeping staff an hour to clean them from a bag and the chair it was on. The dismissive response from the front desk was \"oh yes, they come in when it rains.\"

Ok Hotel but needed improvement to be a 4star hote

I spent two days in the hotel.
Considerations:
1.Sauna not working and No instruction on how make it work,só instructions could improve.
2. massage need to be booked 24h in advance, which is fine but sometimes you just need in the next few hours which would be nice
3. Smell of the aromatic essences could be more neutral - the smell was bothering so much that made me wake up several times on the first night until I get used to it. Honestly, it shouldn’t be needed those kind of aromas
4. Noise, the guest on the next room was sick and sneezing the whole second night, the room should have acoustics treatment
5. They do not provide conditioner, I would expect that from a 4 star hotel - so bring your own
6. Breakfast. Could be much better, specially the juices, they could be fresh and not box. Coffee is very week, so on the second night I decided to order something else instead of having their filtered coffee.
6. Croissant and pain au chocolate should be fresh, Food options could be more authentic and explore the Portuguese coiousine it is fine to have French or English breakfast if they are well made, the pastel de nata was delicious. I would recommend they order authentic things from a padaria (cassetinho for instance)

Hotel is verry nice. Great place to forget about every day life. Beautiful area. Quiet. Amazing people work in. I had a morning flight and breakfast was ready especially for us!! Btw. It was amazing breakfast. The only one think i didnt like was paid afternoon tea which should be free but this is just a tip to management.

Luxury and character combined!

My wife and I needed last minute accommodation following a flight cancellation. We booked a night here and were treated so kindly from the moment I called to confirm our room type to checkout. We both wished we had spent more time in this beautiful room during our honeymoon and will look to stay here upon our return to Madeira.

A good centre for discovering Madeira but the location of the hotel seems to result in it being under cloud a lot. If you go up to the mountains or down to the beach you find sun. For 5 of our 7 days the hotel was in cloud. This may be unusual but check it out further.
Staff we're friendly and helpful when asked advice. Not much forthcoming of their on volition though.

Charming hotel

It was a good decision chooosing to stay out of the City of Funchal and stay at this charming hotel with tranquil atmosphere that i feel well rested during my 4 night stay. The Staff were very friendly especially at the Restaurant, clean and spacious room, comfy bed, and it's also a big plus with Restaurant: serving good and traditional food. The breakfast buffet offers good choices of fresh fruits, fresh bread sortiments, home-made jam and their tasty omelet is never to miss.
Some points for improvements would be with the safe, which is an old school system, we were told to pay extra 1.50€ per day and get the key at the reception, secondly: the wifi is slow, another thing: some of the pillow were very hard and heavy and were not comfortable at all.

Lovely cozy hotel up the mountains

Stayed at the Porto Bay Serra Hotel for 4 nights. Great location, high up in the mountains, very quiet and peaceful, 10 minutes away from the airport right next to a beautiful golf course. The hotel is very small and cozy exactly what I was looking for. The rooms are dated but ok. Great value for your money (I paid $ 60/night) breakfast was included and was very nice too. Staff was very friendly but limited. It is for sure a great hotel for golfers or if you like to be outside the city (12 km away from Funchal)
The hotel does NOT have any AC. There is nobody to help you with your lugguage.

Intimate, relaxing property

The hotel itself is in excellent condition with modern facilities. Even the basic room is very comfortable & comes with a small personal garden patio space. Beds are super comfy with sturdy pillows. Good breakfast spread & staff always on hand. Very quiet location- perfect if you are looking for some rest & relaxation or if you plan to golf at the spectacular course down the road. The village centre is a 5 minute walk away - there is not much to see & do there but the restaurant there does a good bbq (espetada). The start of the Portela to Ribeiro Frio levada walk is 4 kms away - easy, flat walk but also incredibly boring if going solo. Beware that taxis are very expensive so if you do not have a car arrange a private transfer in advance. If taking the bus to Funchal, arrive at least 20 mins in advance at the bus stop as it can leave earlier than scheduled time.

Peace and Quiet in the Autumn.

The hotel is a delight and of course part of the Porto Bay portfolio. It is as one would expect for a hotel of this standard and I have no complaints at all. The village of Santa Serra is small and is about a ten minute walk from the hotel. There are a couple of simple restaurants in the village. There is a also a large street market on Sunday. I did not have a car, however the use of buses are enjoyable, cheap, and efficient.

Relaxing Hotel

Leading a busy life where we rarely have time for ourselves it was wonderful to stay in this beautiful hotel. The staff were very friendly and helpful and made our stay so pleasant. Have already recommended this hotel to our friends. The food was of an excellent standard and we even brought our friends for a meal after we had checked out and had gone to stay at our apartment in Funchal. We were able to completely relax here. Thank you so much to all the staff.

Beautiful and calm hotel

It's a very nice hotel in a small village. It is located on a small hill, very calm and surrounded by lots of nature. The hotel stuff was friendly and the room nice and rather big. They have an indoor pool and a sauna which we did not use. There's a golf area close by and you reach the next bigger city called Machico in appr. 15min by car.

Lovely quiet hotel close to town. Good food and very good service by a Polish lady who speaks good English and is very polite and friendly. Three slight criticisms: first, altho there is kettle and tea/coffee in room, there was no milk so we had to \"borrow\" a small jug from the breakfast buffet. Second there is no mini-fridge in room. Third, it would have been nice to have had a swimming pool to dip in after a hard day walking in the mountains/on the golf course.

Wir haben uns sehr wohl gefühlt! Sehr gutes Hotel, sehr gutes Personal, großartiges Frühstück! Das Bett war für mich persönlich zu weich, aber das ist Geschmachssache... Wir waren nur zwei Nächte da, wir wären gern länger geblieben, wenn wir nicht schon unseren Flug nach Hause hätten. Sehr empfehlenswert!

Das Zimmer war sehr sauber. Lage des Hotels ruhig und schön. Der Pool hat angenehme Temperatur, die Sauna ist winzig klein. Das Frühstück ist ok. aber nicht abwechslungsreich. Aufschnitt, Käse und Müsli sind recht einfach. Das Personal sehr freundlich. Einige Startpunkte für Wanderungen sind gut zu erreichen.

Verkligen helt fantastiska sängar! Superbra frukost. Trevligt med pool och biljard. Det låg uppe bland bergen och inte mycket restauranger i närheten så man måste ha bil om man ska bo där. Restaurangen nekade oss på kvällen för de bara hade en kock, så man behöver boka i god tid innan.

Schönes Landhotel mit Macken!

Schönes Hotel am Land, aber: Zu wenig Sitzplätze im Restaurant (als Hotelgäste konnten wir am Nachmittag für das Abendessen keinen Tisch mehr für 2 Personen reservieren), das Hallenbad hat eine schlechte bzw. gar keine Lüftung (von der Decke tropft es dauernd herunter) und zu wenige Liegen, wir hatten ein Zimmer im \"Turm\", das ohne Lift nur über eine halsbrecherische Stiege erreichbar war und das Hinauf- und Hinuntertragen der Koffer war eine schweißtreibende Angelegenheit (es gab auch kein Gepäckservice). Ansonsten Zimmer, Frühstück und 1 x Essen im Hotel bezüglich Preis-/Leistung in Ordnung.

Hotel de bon augure sur les hauteurs. Bon restaurant et bon petit déjeuner, pas beaucoup de choix proche si on veut diner à l'extérieur. Personnel sympathique. Piscine agréable le soir après avoir randonné dommage que le sauna ne fonctionne pas directement car pas envie de monter à la réception quand on est en maillot de bain !

Ayant vécu une 1ere expérience dans la chaîne des hôtels resorts Porto Bay, je m’attendais à la même qualité. A part la literie qui est toujours aussi extraordinaire le reste n’a pas suivi. La chambre est sombre car face à un mur végétal, le standing de l’hôtel n’est pas le même non plus. J’ai cependant apprécié la proposition de la réceptionniste lors de mon Check out : un panier pique-nique à défaut du petit-déjeuner que nous ne pouvions pas prendre faute d’un avion trop tôt.
