Location is lovely. Few minutes walk into the small town but you feel like you’re in the rainforest with the rooms backing directly onto foliage. We had a twin Queen room and loved it. Spotlessly clean with amazing comfy beds and linen. Fab shower. Loved the bird song which was piped through the tv - lovely welcome. Dinner and breakfast included both of which were excellent quality although the choice was not that large for dinner. Few patrons (including us) commented about the slow service especially drinks at dinner but the staff were lovely.

The biggest issue I have here is with Expedia. It claimed this hotel was 18 miles from Mount Cook! Perhaps as the crow flies! We wanted to go to Mount Cook and realized when we reached that it would be a 6 hour drive to get there. The hotel is by no means a 5 star accommodation. It is a nice motel with a dining room. The room was utterly unremarkable and too dark. The dinner was fancy on presentation but average on taste. The breakfast was pretty good. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

The staff was exceptionally helpful and friendly. Beyond that, I have to agree with other reviewers who mentioned that this property simply does not warrant the exorbitant rates. The room was unremarkable, as was the breakfast. Both mornings, the eggs were cold, and the pancakes were crunchy and appeared to have been frozen and poured from a box. Overall, these meals were quite disappointing. The service at dinner was quite good, but we were thankful to have only two meals there as the options were limited, particularly for vegetarians. Sadly I would not consider this to be a luxury property and would recommend.

Honeymooners Look Elsewhere
If you are in your late 20s/early 30s I highly recommend booking elsewhere. My husband and I stayed at this hotel expecting a high-end experience, especially given the price of $500+ a night, but it did not live up to expectations.
There were several large, older tour groups here during our stay. Perhaps they have a better experience (ex. they receive different dinner course menus, etc.) but as individual travelers we found Te Waonui to be extremely lacking in genuine hospitality and customer service.
The dinner portions were extremely small. The wild rice 'salad' had three pieces of arugula. I was served a single ravioli for my main entree. The service was slow, and there was no effort to check if we needed more wine or even refills of water. We ended up leaving the restaurant hungry, which is not something you'd expect for the price. We provided feedback to the front desk who appeared to be incredibly uninterested and did not offer any solution or apology.
The room itself was dated, which wouldn’t have been a deal-breaker if it had met the other advertised features. For instance, the heated floors didn’t work and we found dirty wine glasses that had noticeable lipstick stains on them.
It was clear that the attention to detail just isn’t here.
At this price point, we were expecting much more, and unfortunately, it felt like we were overpaying for a subpar experience.

Small, functional room - very dark. Comfortable bed but lacked bedside power sockets for phone etc. Yes there are rainforest plants ( ferns etc) quite literally outside the window - solid wall of greenery so almost zero sunlight.

A beautiful hotel with views of nearby mountains. Rooms tastefully decorated and nightly turn down service left magnificent chocolates. Dinner and breakfast were included in the price for our room. Unfortunately the five course dinner menu was the same for the three nights of our stay. Lovely to sit on the balcony for meals to enjoy the view- don’t forget your repellent, the sand flies are fierce. A lovely place to stay.

Definitely NOT a 5 star hotel! The receptions and bell staff were lovely and the glass of Kiwi juice offered very refreshing. Our room was fine, 2 queen beds however the walls are paper thin and we experienced a constant slamming of doors and children shouting well into the evening. In the bar the staff seemed nonplussed when we asked for Gin & Tonic (also cucumber in Tanqueray??) They presented the bill with every drink even though they had our room number. Nothing is offered with the drinks and when I asked for some nuts I was told they were $5. I said ok and yet they still didn't materialise until I asked again! The meal was nice 5 courses, 2 of which are prechosen (soup and sorbet) the other 3 courses can be chosen from a choice of 3 or 4 items. Again the food was delivered with a speed and disinterest that would not be acceptable in a 5 star hotel. Breakfast is a self service buffet. Overall its a nice hotel but 4 stars at best!

The place is overpriced. For a thousand NZ 1000$ per night -it is not worth it. The food had the same menu every day for breakfast and dinner. The last seating for dinner is 8 PM and if you come late they will request you to eat at another restaurant and they will pick up the tab. However there is no restaurant nearby that is worth the money that you have already paid for the dinner at Te Waonui. Overall totally overpriced for the stay

The retreat is lovely and the grounds beautifully maintained. It is conveniently located right next to the hot pools and a helicopter company. The food in the dining room was very good, especially the 5 course meal, and their wine menu offered great selections. The staff were very pleasant and accommodating. My only dissatisfaction was with the heating in the room. It was difficult to adjust so we were comfortable. The weather was unpredictable while we were there so that may have been a contributing factor.

What a great retreat in a small glacier town. At first may seem overpriced, but it includes a truly outstanding breakfast and dinner, wich ends up being a great deal. The location and views, the service, the ambiance of a mountain lodge are all great. Rooms are very cozy and comfortable.

Te Waonui Forest Retreat is the nicest hotel located in the Franz Josef Glacier area. It is tidy and the rooms are quite nice. It was a little chaotic in the lobby area because they cater to the tour bus crowd.
Dinner was a fixed five course dinner option that was the same menu 2 nights in a row. Thankfully, they had 2 appetizer and 3 entree choices so you could eat differently each night. They attempted to make it upscale but it felt more like a cruise ship or disney hotel. Again, it is the best choice for the area but certainly not a 5-star hotel!

Outrageous pricing $1,200 for a std room with 2 queen beds, small bathroom...i pay that price for Four Seasons Hotel suites. There were 3 adults (our adult daughter - a student and my husband & myself. We were requires to have dinner and breakfast included. The dinner was 5 courses...soup, salad, main, a piece of cheese & a desert. Drinks were extra. The food was all fine and service was fine. Overall I think the hotel is taking advantage of limited options other than motels in the area. Way overpriced!

Incredible property & service was only diminished by a late night partying adjacent guest slamming doors.1am complaint to front desk seemed to resolve issue. I highly commend the hotel staff and management for their handling of the situation. Next day moved rooms and apologized for the previous night. Everyone on the staff from the desk personnel, bellmen & restaurant staff apologized and eent out of their way to ensure my remaining time with them was 5 star worthy. We were staying in Franz Joseph glacier just after new year and availability of rooms was very limited. We ended up with one of the last available rooms. The price was very high but since we were staying only 2 nights we went for it.
When we arrived we were greeted personally, given a glass of champagne and personally escorted to our room. We also found out that the rate included a gourmet 5 course meal!
Both hotel and restaurant did not disappoint. The service and attention to detail was exquisite. We will definitely return
