Very old. Charming in some ways and not so much in others. For Fox Glacier, it was probably the best choice as the restaurant was good and the beer was cold at the bar.

Its been awhile since weve seen a place with radiators for heat.

It was all good except we weren't advised on checking in that breakfast finished at 9 a.m. the next morning. We got a call at 8.30 the next morning to advise us of this. Consequently it was a bit of a rush to get there in time.

Hotel is really conveniently located, especially if you want to go for the heli hikes or rides the next day. Room itself is just average though. Can do with more hooks for clothes and maybe a microwave.

Small town, good hotel

This hotel is in a region that has more transient population than local. The hotel was nice, with an attached restaurant. There are only 3-4 restaurants in the town all walking distance from the hotel. The hotel staff were nice and helped us with bit of a late checkout. The breakfast at the hotel is not great, but definitely good.

This is an old property which is going through progressive reno’s. Our room was spacious, well equipped with lots of shelf space for your stuff. Bathroom big and room and bathroom well-lit.
Well located when you are travelling with Intercity coach.

Service was extremely slow in the restaurant even though it wasn’t busy. The reception speakers were directly under our room, the first night we called down at 1am and complained as we couldn’t sleep and the music was turned off. The 2nd night we requested it switched off early on the way to our room which it did although it was switched back on at 6.30 am and woke us up. After calling down to complain it was switched back off again though. Basically both nights sleep were disturbed due to the radio in reception plus we had it thumping away all the time we were in our room.

Old hotel, but clean and staff is very helpful

Following the cyclone storms, we were able to maintain our holiday schedule. We were a bit disappointed that the damage to access roads and trails to the glaciers was significant and restrictive, but we realized mother nature still rules.

Food, gasoline and information services were readily available. Hotel staff knowledgeable and happy to answer all questions.

Wifi service in rooms weak.

Should be called Heartless.

Very sadly my husband had a massive heart attack at the Fox Glacier walk. To be fair, our suitcases had a great stay, but my husband was flown to Greymouth and subsequently to Christchurch, so the people didn't stay in the hotel. I was not offered a refund, for the second night when not even our suitcases were there, I was not offered sympathy, I was not offered anything in the way of support. The hotel was advised by the local police, so they can't plead ignorance. The people not associated with the hotel were great. My husband is still in a serious condition.

Very soft bed, too soft to sleep until 5am then woke up by someone knocking the door at 9:40 asking for checking out at 10am. Well, we got one hour extension and managed to leave at 10:20. First time in many years travel.

the staff is very helpfull and friendly and the location is very conviniently located near the fuel pump and the office for heli hiking is also nearby and its on the state highway so we have restaurants nearby the hotel.the room were well maintained.we enjoyed our stay at heartland will recommend it to others.

The room was on the small side but clean and comfortable. As previous reviewers have stated low on shelving and space for clothes.
We much prefer the Motels we've been staying in which are not only cheaper but have larger rooms.
Still it is very conveniently located and was only for one night

We had a very enjoyable stay in the hotel, great location and quality of the room was good. Hotel staff were very helpful. We had some problems in booking a local tour and the reception staff was very helpful in liaising for us with the tour operator to solve our issues, which we appreciated much.

This old hotel has been somewhat taken care of.
It was good to stay for 1 night but I wouldn’t spend much longer. If we had our time again we would have stayed down the road at Franz Josef, it’s more modern and has a few more choices for restaurants etc.

Nice place to stay in Fox Glacier

I was pleased to find out that the hotel was within walking of the main street, which has shops, food, and trails. Even better is that the Fox Glacier Activity Office was also within walking distance. My only one wish or recommendation would be window unit ac..I was there in Feb which is their summer and my room was too warm for my comfort. I personally do not like to have windows open for ventilation. There was a young man, very pleasant that help me with my transportation to Queenstown, when the bus did not pick me up at the hotel as promised. He went out of his way to find transportation for me to get to Queenstown. That extra above and beyond gesture was greatly appreciated. Everyone is nice and the hotel in clean and that is always a good plus. I loved the French toast and bacon I had there for breakfast it was delish!! Overall a pleasant stay.

Great location, but very outdated hotel.

Location is great if you want to go see Fox Glacier. It is right by restaurants and stores.
I probably interacted with 3 staff there, and they were all very nice.

However, this place is way outdated. All furnitures were VERY old... Carpets & chairs/sofars are old an dirty. They need a major renovation.
For the price they charge, (we paid a little over $150 USD which is about $210 NZD), it was very disappointing, as it didn't even come with breakfast or anything. Walls and doors are very thin and I could hear everyone that walks by the room or next door neighbors talking.

Unfortunately demand exceeds supply in this small town and so complete dumps are allowed to flourish. This hotel is a good example. Everything needs renovating. The room was not clean, debris on the floor, smelled musty. Pillows were hard. And it was expensive! Staff pleasant but incompetent.

Staff were nice, but not very efficient. The guy on the front desk needs to learn how to deal with people better. The room was just ok, A crappy old CRT Television that was almost impossible to view. The meals and the bar were very good, but I don't believe I will be in a hurry to return there in my future travels

An ideal base.

An ideal base for visiting the Fox Glacier. The hotel dates back to the 1920's which gave it character and the decor was appropriate for a building of this age. It would, however, been even better if the bathroom facilities had been updated. Can't comment on the food as we didn't eat in but did use the bar. Service in reception was excellent but less so in the bar.

Amazing Views!!!

Unfortunately we arrived during a raining week so the sights were less than prefect. The accommodation was amazing though. We were upgraded to a king room WITH A BATH TUB! After driving from hokatika in the rain a nice hot bath was just what we needed. The Asian guy at the reception desk (didn't get his name) was amazing too, he explained everything and helped us with parking and how to get our stuff inside in the weather. The saloon across the road was great for dinner and then coffee and cake in the hotel at night. We woke up to views looking to the mountains and check out was a breeze! Highly recommended place to stay if you want to do either glacier walks. Best warm and comfy bed plus pillows like home! We are coming back in winter to stay again and i highly encourage anyone looking to stay in this place.

A Hotel to avoid.

There are two Heartland hotels in Fox Glacier, unfortunately we were booked in the awful one. The other, which is on the left as you drive in from the north, looked OK. Our hotel consisted of a long building constructed with white painted concrete blocks and a tin roof. The rooms needed updating or knocking down altogether. The TV was a cathode ray tube with 3 channels - this in 2016, and the furniture was ready for the scrap heap. There had been some attempt at updating the bathroom but needed more. There was a coach party in at the same time as we were there and the staff were more concerned with their welfare than ours.
This was the most expensive hotel we stayed in on our tour round the south island but easily the worst.

We were first of all put into a room in serious need of refurbishment but having complained to the manager we were moved to a newly refurbished room which was excellent. My complaint was dealt with very courteously and efficiently by the manager who has my full admiration for the job she is doing.
All staff in the hotel were caring and friendly.
Meals we had were good value.

Old hotel. It is located in a different place from Franz Josef. There is a Great Lake in close distance (you will need car to get there) where you can go for a walk around it. Nice alpine scenery! The outdoor closes very noisily! People where getting in and out their rooms till late at night and early in the morning disturbing our sleep.
