The receptionist was so helpful and kind to respond to my query about the hairdryer and came promptly to my room to help me find it and was very gracious when I realised it had been there the whole time in a black bag on the hanger and I totally missed that! The room was clean and spacious, the bed was comfortable and I had the best shower. The breakfast was great with a wide selection of food and hot drinks. It was in a good location for the conference I attended at the St Thomas centre next to the cathedral.

Was greeted at reception by a lovely upbeat and friendly lady, the room was clean and beautiful. The bed was very comfortable and the shower had great heating. The room also had adjustable A/C which had a wonderful heating option. No faults or problems.

I had lunch yesterday which was an panini and the cheese wasn’t melted properly so a bit disappointing. Then I had soup today which said on the menu came with warm sour dough. It came with a slice of toast.

Last night I bought a bottle of wine at the bar which was listed as £32, which is fine. The bar tender turns around, got the bottle of the shelf and gave it to me. Then my bill came and it was £35.50. I asked why and she said there’s a “discretionary” 10% service added to everything. Now I don’t mind leaving a tip for good service but I felt this was wrong. I also wonder if the staff receive said service charge. My gut tells me not.

Having said that my room was comfortable and I slept well. The Wi-Fi was fast and I could stream with it so that was good.

I enjoyed my stay but did feel a few corners were being cut and the service charge thing leaves a bad taste in my mouth

Unfortunately big let down was I had a terrible night’s sleep due to noise from other rooms and what felt like paper thin walls - maybe provide earplugs for guests? Overall a great stay for what we needed. We needed to check in early so that we could get ready for an event, we were not able to arrange this at the point of booking or in advance it was left as a gamble on the day. Our room was ready and the charge was £20 per hour, which felt like A LOT. Ultimately we needed to do it but it would make me think twice about choosing mercure again over a hotel with an earlier check in time.

Great location which is convenient for Franklin's Gardens, the train and bus stations and the town centre. Unfortunately it is directly opposite a park area which seems to attract a fair few dodgy characters and this is the same for the walk into town.

The rooms are clean and modern (duvets and pillows aren't great but what you'd expect at this price point). The bar could do with having someone present to serve behind it on a more regular basis. Breakfast is very good for a buffet with the bacon some of the best I've had. Staff polite and friendly.

Our biggest issue during our stay was due to the fact that we had a room overlooking the entrance to the hotel. Being woken at approx 2am by a car full of youths who parked outside, inhaled laughing gas and talked loudly for about an hour wasn't great. I'd have expected them to be moved on but maybe there was no one there to move them on as the reception phone went unanswered.

Very warm welcome from the staff on reception. However; the last night was very hectic with a party that was happening late into the evening and didn't stop until 0100 which disturbed our night sleep. It was very noisy and our room kept shaking from the music that would be heard on floor 3.

The shower hook on the the glass, shower curtain was loose, and the light fittings were needing to be pushed up. Also, there was lack of lighting in a room that was a decent size.

First time visiting at this hotel. No where to park they had an event on which wasn’t stated at booking and took nearly 30 minutes to find somewhere to park. The reception wasn’t welcoming and when we got to our room we were horrified about the cleanliness. Black tape on the ceilings which patched up holes and black mould everywhere in the bathroom. During our time there was an incident involving a drunk dispute which 5 security guards had to come out to try to diffuse the situation the whole reception area became very unsafe and we were told to go to the rooms and away from

We had a really nice stay here. The hotel is well located on the edge of town so it was easy to go out for meals and walk to local attractions. It’s also 10 mins walk from the train station. Parking was easy to access.

The staff were all really helpful, particularly the gentleman on reception ( I think his name was Chester).

The only thing we would raise is the lack of fridge in the room. We were staying during a heatwave and although the room was air conditioned it would have been good to have a fridge to keep cold drinks.

We also appreciated having such a big sink and mirror in the bathroom, with loads of space either side to put our bathroom stuff - something that is often missing in hotel rooms. Okay but could be improved

Upon arrival using hotel.com means you have to pay £8 to park overnight. If you book direct with Mercure, the parkings free. This isnt really very good as i'm still a customer. When trying to check in at 4pm, i was greeted with a queue of 40 plus foreign sports people. You needed more staff to check them in as a group, because of all the extra documents they had that needing checking. Thankfully the lady at reception see just me waiting and called me forward or I'd have missed my own event i needed to be at. This needs looking at as its not the first time ive seen this issue at the reception.

Stayed here before and generally very happy but a bit of feedback: Pillows are far too soft (i have asked for firmer ones for 2nd night)
Breakfast needs some attention. The sign to order veggie sausages etc is not obvious enough and I didn’t know it was there till
today although I have been here a few times. The eggs on the serving counter looked horrible (dried up). I did ask for porridge which they ‘cooked’ for me but i was inedible as the oats were hardly cooked at all.
Just give breakfast some attention and the hotel is a great choice!
