Enjoyable overnight stay in Utrecht

Star Lodge is a little way out of the centre of Utrecht but is conveniently located close to a bus line which takes you into the centre in a few minutes. The rooms are relatively basic but are large, clean and comfortable. Staff are friendly and helpful, although they did forget to tell us about the honesty bar until we were about to leave. Breakfast is a continental buffet style with a wide range of products and made the overall package great value for money. Utrecht itself is well worth a visit with lots of interesting architecture and plentiful bars and restaurants along the canals and in the squares.

We stayed 5 nights in the Star Lodge Hotel - it was a great experience with very helpful and friendly staff, comfortable and super clean rooms with a smart eco-design and an excellent breakfast on offer. Situated in a large park in Utrecht city, the location was also attractive - and a hotel with a strong environmental and ecological vision is a strong point!! I would happily book again in the future, just change the pillows please! Everything else is perfect!

I have just spent three nights here during the very trying Covid19 shutdown and I can honestly say I had a great stay. The hotel and rooms were very clean and tidy and all the staff members I met were very friendly and helpful. I will be staying here when I next visit Utrecht.

Basic but very nice infrastructure.
Unfortunately there were kids running & yelling around in the morning which woke us up.

Nice hotel in a good location for my business trip. Very helpful staff who give you a kettle and a hairdryer from reception and do everything they can to help. Breakfast is very good.
It's slightly expensive in my opinion but suits my needs and there is a restaurant next door. Have to pay for parking which is irritating after paying so much for your room.

We extended our two-night stay thanks to the satisfaction we had during our stay at Star Lodge. It is a comfortable, contemporary hotel and we were delighted with the excellent service at the front desk and outstanding breakfasts.

The hotel was ok picked it because there were two restaurants on site so once there I could relax. The room was ok but having the shower and sink in the room was ok but not if you are sharing. The downside was the restaurant one was closed the other had all the tables reserved when I got my food it was very average at best as an example I placed my order and the food was on my table within a minute so it had to be per cooked.

Don’t look any further- stay here !!!

It was an amazing stay and the location is very convenient, right next to the bus stop close to Utrecht Central. The rooms are very nice, the lobby and food were excellent.
Perfect when you are out and about exploring Utrecht, Amsterdam and other places. The restaurant Loft 88 which is adjacent to the main property is fabulous. The bar, food and staff are exceptional. We enjoyed having dinner and a few drinks there. The experience at Star lodge was fantastic and we would certainly stay here again, can’t beat the services and comfort for the price.

Peaceful and quiet lodging not too far from DT

The Star Lodge is a quiet facility that feels like you're in the country, but it is actually quite centrally-located in Utrecht. It has a bit of the feel of an upscale dormitory with its contemporary finishes, but it does not feel like a hotel, so it is not a romantic kind of place. It is great as a crash-pad and relatively affordable. The parking is not included but relatively affordable.

Lovely rural feel

Wonderful staff, lovely feel to the place - v relaxed. Only minor issues: room was too warm, could only book a twin room, and no food available at the restaurant after 9pm (though lovely staff helped me book a very nice local takeaway and delivered to my room). Would definitely stay again. Beautiful woodland walks all around and loved watching the horses!

Strange place on the outskirts of Utrecht

I found this place to be quite odd. Starting with the main positive aspect - the staff were efficient and very helpful when I checked in. However the room was not really comfortable. It was extremely hot in the room during the day, so each morning I felt like leaving as soon as I had finished breakfast - not really relaxing. The single bed was very soft, and it felt precarious sleeping on it in the middle of the room; I almost fell out on the first morning. The floor has some sort of lino or rubber surface and so feels industrial, as does the tin roof which creaks throughout the evening, contracting as it cools down. The shower is open into the bedroom and rather weak, and the shower gel provided was unpleasant. There was no hair dryer in the room. Although I understand I could have asked for one at reception (this info was written on a door in the breakfast room), it would have been nice to not have to go downstairs to reception to ask for things that are usually standard in hotel rooms of this price. While in the end the hotel was fine/functional, it just seemed poor value for the price. It is a 32 minute walk from the centre of town, and so a bus is the best way to get back and forth.

Very, very, very nice hotel.

Just outside the city centre, it has lovely walking paths out back and a training/riding stable on site. The two restaurants adjacent to the hotel are both very good. It’s only a 12 minute bus ride to Utrecht Central Station. Great value for your money, highly recommend!

Nice hotel in close enough location to City

35 minute walk into the City. Good hotel with breakfast included. Breakfast areas can get crowded so potentially you won’t have a table, just need to get in early. My only issue were the thickness of the walls, we could hear everything our room next door with kids were saying clearly. The roof is also tin so when it rained it was hard to sleep.

Hotel that tries, and succeeds, to be different

Was limited by availability at a reasonable price and so tried the Star Lodge. It is outside the town centre (2.5km) but it is served by an excellent bus route (6 routes pass in front of hotel). Takes only 5 mins on the bus and wait time is usually no more than a few minutes. If you have a car then there is a good sized parking area for 6.5 Euro a day (beware of what a hotel can charge per day for parking). The first thing you notice is that there is a riding school and stables next door. In fact our room overlooked it. The hotel does not have a restaurant other than what is used for breakfast. But adjacent to the hotel is a bar/restaurant called Loft 88. There is a self service bar which uses a system where you load credit onto to your room key (you may want to ask how you get any unused credit back when you check out). That said the bar has a small seating area in the lobby area but fine if you want to get a drink to take to your room. Hotel is on 2 floors but there is no elevator. Room is compact with a sort of open plan bathroom and minimal storage. But beds were really comfy. TV with English language channels including BBC1 and BBC2. Technology failed a bit as room key and parking ticket both failed on different occasions in a 2 day stay and needed to be replaced and re-validated. Very quiet both from internal and external noise. Breakfast satisfactory but could have been quicker to replenish items. Super fast WiFi

A pleasant stay

I had a pleasant stay in a quiet room on the second floor with a nice view of a stream and trees. Staff was friendly. No air conditioning, so I had to leave the window open. Bed was comfortable but it only had a duvet cover with no sheet. Room had a modern design with an open bathroom. Breakfast was basic but good. Location worked for me as I was visiting friends in De Bilt, but you need to take a bus to get into central Utrecht. Fortunately, the bus is frequent and the stop is very close. I would stay again.

Handily placed hotel

We discovered this hotel whilst on our last stay in Utrecht whilst we were passing on the bus so decided to try it because of the good bus transport link into the city and the easily availability for our son to pick us up by car, we were not disappointed, a nice clean room a decent breakfast friendly staff and a good location without having to pay city rates. We would definitely recommend this hotel if you want no frills.

Really excellent hotel - a bit out of town but we got a reliable (and frequent) local bus from the station. No on-site catering (other than breakfast) but two good but busy establishments on either side. Staff really helpful about local facilities and went out of their way to phone for tickets etc. Modern two storey building surrounded by canals and gardens. Quiet in room despite road 50m away. Would certainly return to hotel - and Utrecht is a great city, with great museums including a railway museum.

Quietest hotel I've ever stayed in

Pretty good experience here. This was the quietest hotel I've ever stayed in. Not even electronic / fan / machine noise. The timing was one of the hotest days in Utrecht/Amsterdam area. Just prior to my visit, the Amsterdam hotel I stayed in had no air conditioner, was unbearable to stay in, can only fall asleep after it cools down at 3am. Star Lodge, however, didn't need it. Beautiful outside the window, just trees, stream & grass, with occasional birds/ducks visit. The cleaning staff was a bit rude, I didn't put up do-not-distrub sign, and I was asked to leave the room for her to clean.. She could have come back later. Location wasn't ideal, needed to take a bus to get into town. Good thing the bus stop isn't far away.

Not worth the money & bad service

I booked this accommodation because it was conveniently located to where I needed to be, and that I could pay on arrival in Euros. However despite the booking agreement being pay on arrival, the hotel took it upon themselves to charge me prior to arrival. As a result they debited the wrong card resulting in a GBP to EUR conversion fee of 3% and unauthorised overdraft fees. When complaining to the hotel, there was little explanation and sympathy other than it was company policy and it helped provide a speedy check-in.

When arriving at the hotel at 10PM, the so called speedy check-in took about 10 minutes even though there was no-one else there, making it the slowest hotel check-in I've experienced recently.

We were also charged city tax for 2 people / 2 nights despite one of the guest being a local resident. When questioned, the hotel staff claimed that even local residents have to pay the city tax. I doubled checked this because I thought they were wrong, and the found this: \"To the purpose of a stay within the municipality by persons who are not registered in the municipal's local records as being residents, a city tax can be levied.\". So it looks like they have been incorrectly charging people tax.

As for the hotel, I am not sure how this hotel acquired a 3 star rating but it should be a 2 star in my opinion. If you are staying on the top floor as was I, you should note there is no lift. There is no fridge, no iron, and no air conditioning in the rooms.

An OK short stay motel

The accommodation and breakfast facilities were fine. The car parking cost seems exploitive.We tried both of the two restaurants on site. We had to hurry our visit to the better of the two as it as fully booked for the rest of the evening, The food was good. On our second evening we went to the other one which is no more than a large pub serving fast food. We had fish and chips, and spent the rest of the evening debating when the fish was alive!.

Great hotel, excellent value for money

Great hotel, very clean, excellent service. Staff goes out of their way to make you happy. The guys and girls behind the desk are really friendly.

We had to leave before the start of breakfast (which is free!) because of an early flight home. After telling the front desk staff about this, they arranged that the night staff would unlock the breakfast area early, so we were able to sit down and have a nice hot cup of coffee and some breakfast cake before leaving for the airport. It really made a difference.

Location is fantastic if you have a car. It's close to major roads, very easy to get into the city, but at the edge of a park, so it's quiet at night. There were only two towels in the room, but the front desk was more than happy to give us a few more.

The parking lot is shared with the restaurant next door, but they'll keep enough open spaces for hotel guests, so it's never a problem.

The free WiFi works great, it's not the fastest on the planet, but it's not slow by any means. You can easily browse the web, check your email and facetime with friends.

Stayed 5 times at the Star Lodge, clean, modern, and simple hotel, pleasant and helpful staff. If you are a light sleeper, make sure you request a room that doesn't have an interconnecting door with another room, the door reduces the sound proofing dramatically, I felt like the chap snoring in the adjoining room was actually in bed next to me. The standard rooms are significantly well insulated and do not have this problem.

Nordic style

Great looking place - black clapperboard buildings in a very green setting. Design very much at the core - sleek, efficient, open, spacious vibe. The buildings finished in what looked an inexpensive yet high quality way.

The one bad bit of design unfortunately was the bed, which is a core thing to screw up. I had a single - so the bed was narrow and the mattress kept slipping off its base. On closer inspection the mattress didn't look like another a normal mattress, it looked like a big sofa cushion. The other problem was that whatever it was made of generated a lot of heat . So on a warm August night the bed was pretty unbearable. That combined with the fact the there is no aircon, or any kind of cooling system, meant that I had to try to sleep with the window wide open - which was OK but you can hear the noise from the nearby road into Utrecht and other guests. So it was a fitful sleep.

The included breakfast was basic but OK. They could, however, do with providing a toaster!

They provide a same day out-sourced laundry service - but I found out too late that you have to give them your laundry by 8.30 in the morning.... A bit Teutonically early for me.

Nice, clean hotel in the green outskirts of Utrecht (some 10 min. away by taxi from the central train station). You can enjoy a beer or pizza in the pub next to it. Bikes are available for rent if you want to stroll around town.

Were here just for one night, passing through to Amsterdam. Hotel was lovely, staff were helpful, decor was really interesting and fresh and clean. Was close enough to Utrecht centre to walk (a good 20 minute walk though) but far enough away to feel like we were in a more remote area. Would definitely recommend this hotel. Only issue we had is that there was no ventilation / fan / aircon and the window that opens does not have fly screens, so when we opened it to try to get some air flow during the night we ended up with a room full of little creatures flying around. Fly screen or fan would have been a very much appreciated addition!

Great Place to Stay Near Utrecht

This is a great hotel for anyone wanting to be in the Utrecht Area. I used to live about a mile from where the hotel now is so I know the area well. The area is primarily residential. But Utrecht is only minutes away. Parking on site; a great Dutch breakfast, and a VERY helpful staff - all at a reasonable price. You can't be it!

We loved this hotel with a rustic modern feel to it. Breakfast was nice, surroundings beautiful and there is a very nice restaurant just a few steps away. As I love horses it was a nice surprise to see the riding school.

great low budget option

For the money we thought this place was a winner. The rooms are clean and well laid out, very spartan, almost like dorm rooms in a college, but brand new and comfortable enough, a small desk for your computer, hooks and simple shelving and hangers. Half the rooms overlook the riding arena, so if you want to sleep late we recommend you request something on the side that faces the walking trails instead because the lessons start early on the weekends. But the kids and ponies going round and round make for an entertaining view otherwise. There is no fan or a.c. in the room, so if you get hot you can't really create a cross vent without opening your hall door and window, which is somewhat invasive and of course in the evening the mosquitoes come in, no screens on the windows. I ended up leaving my window closed as result and it felt stuffy some afternoons and evenings. The trails and adjoining gardens are beautiful and walk-worthy. The restaurant next door is REALLY GOOD. It's easy to get into town, the bus in front goes right to the old center and picks you up and takes you back, 2.7 euros, sometimes with a free return trip if you keep your stub. So convenient. I got the hang of it fast. Plenty of hiking and biking and things to do and see from the Lodge.
The staff was great, the morning buffet was typical of other hotels, nothing fancy, but good basics to get your day going. Easy parking on site is a bonus too. I don't you think you could do better at that rate.

If you don't mind the 25 minute walk to the centre or catching a bus or taxi this hotel is an excellent choice. Next to a cafeteria/ restaurant and within a minutes walk to a bistro ( both close by 9.30) otherwise far from the city noise but far from any other activity or facility too.

Bit DIY but it works well!

Used this place a couple of times on business now - very good value. First time, I felt it was a bit DIY - everything is self-service including the bar, using credit on your key card. Second visit, when I knew what to expect (and how to make sure the all the beer from the dispenser ended up in my glass), no problem whatsoever. Nice fireplace + lobby area. All rooms identical - some face riding stables, others face wooded area with small canal (slightly more private, given the 'in-room' shower with glass screen). Two excellent restaurants next door - though they do shut early in Winter months if you arrive on an evening flight. Note that any remaining credit on key card will be refunded on check out.

Great find outside downtown!

I was a bit worried about what I would find in this hotel.... And I was pleasantly surprised!... The hotel location is perfect as the best way to discover Utrecht isn't by car (we were drive ins around Netherlands)... You take a bust in front o father hotel and in 5 minutes you are enjoying the narrow streets of this beautiful town.
This hotel is like a perfect lodge, high ceilings, type of loft rooms, very new and very comfortable equipped with the essentials for a nice stay... This isn't a 5 star hotel but I was even happier with their quality than with other hotels which promise to be top star and they aren't!. The room is spotless, the reception decor is lodge style as well the rooms and the breakfast... Was basic but fresh, with delicious croissants and great cappuccino... The service was laid back and straightforward without the posh of a five star but who needs that when you will be only using your room to sleep. The bed was very comfortable and all rest of amenities in the room were just I was looking forward for a nice and relaxing evening after a long drive. The employees are very genuine on their service standards and I was very happy overall with this property... I will definitely be back!.

A Strange Place!

First impressions were good. Modern and clean with easy parking. Staff at the reception desk were a little abrupt, but efficient. I was given my room keycard and went to my room down a long cold corridor with a hard shiny floor which looked a little like a hospital! The room had the same plastic shiny floor throughout. The furniture looked to be all made from recycled wooden pallets or something. weird. The wall above the bed had a large back-lit picture and was just bare plaster which left you covered in white dust if you touched it. The room had a walk in shower with a clear (unfrosted) glass screen. This felt like you were taking a shower in your bedroom and would be embarrassing if you were sharing the room with someone! The room felt very much like a hospital room. Breakfast was included which was a big plus for me until i saw breakfast. Cornflakes or muesli. No hot food whatsoever. No sliced bread or a toaster, just rolls and one type of croissant, and some cheese slices if thats your thing. Very poor. There is no restaurant at the hotel, but there is one next door. The food was very good, but carried the same weird theme of wooden pallets for chairs and home-made tables!

New, lovely ambiance, short bikeride to Oudegracht

The hotel is situated in the middle of two lovely restaurants with a horse stable and riding school behind it. When you arrive in the afternoon, you can watch the children taking their riding lessons from the lobby or the back porch area of the hotel as you sip a hot drink of your choice that you have made in the lobby (which you will pay for). The lobby has great sliding doors, which are usually open during the day, letting in a gentle breeze. In the early evening travelers and business colleagues meet for dinner and drinks at the restaurant next to the hotel in their outdoor seating areas lit by lantern and fire. Maybe you would like to see the Oudegracht, so you rent one of the bikes provided by the hotel, that are in excellent repair, for 16 euro/day. You make the short journey into town and enjoy a delicious dinner at the many nearby restaurants. When you return, you are greeted by helpful and friendly hotel staff that will answer any of your questions. Your room has a modern feel with cement floors and streamlined furniture. The bed is comfortable with a pillowy duvet cover. The next day you will enjoy a fantastic breakfast, especially on the weekends, with croissants, pastry, bread, meat, cheeses, fruit, vegetable, juice, cereal, yogurt, and most hot drinks (no hot chocolate).
When you return from exploring that day, you will find your room has been straightened and bed made. We loved our stay and definitely recommend it to you.

A bit disappointing

I have stayed elsewhere in Utrecht, so am able to make a direct comparison, and I'm afraid that the Star Lodge fell a little short of my expectations. Being on the outside of the city (just off the ring road), and a new build, I was hoping for something more that its rivals in the centre (where location and the age of the buildings are obviously factors).

Firstly, I'll note the positives: the staff were friendly and helpful, the room was clean and nicely decorated, and the bed extremely comfortable. I also had a fine buffet breakfast.

Against (and I shall repeat that these are all minor things): the signing to the car park entrance was a little unclear- I saw several people turn too soon, and have to cut through the cycle lane; there was no lift to my room (a minor inconvenience for me, but essential for many), which is one thing in an old building, but expected in a new-build; my room was a little too small for its furniture - one couldn't sit quite straight at the desk, because the chair wedged against the bed (again, only really a gripe in a new building, as the room layout could be planned from scratch); the shower cubicle was a little poorly planned - it's in the room, and the towel rack is behind the door, so water gets tracked out.

In summary, a perfectly adequate place to stay, but little things just niggled. And a hotel on the ring road needs to beat, not just match, its rivals in the city centre

This is a basic hotel. The staff were pleasant and helpful. The room was basic - it was a little cold and there was no way to adjust the temperature. There were no coffee making facilities in the room itself. Wi-fi was easy and free and worked well. Breakfast was basic with limited choice but was ok.

Great on every single parameter: perfect, quiet place. Just 2 storeys high. It is so lush green outside. Great breakfast-even for vegetarians. There is a lovely mini canal behind the building. Beautiful nature walks around teh property. Very well connected by bus to the city centre. Right outside the hotel are 2 restaurants where you can have your meals. Upon walking 10 minutes, you have a number of restaurants if you want more options. There is even a vending machine on the ground floor, for your convenience. The staff is incredibly polite & helpful. I stayed for 3 days in August. I highly recommend this. Very very satisfied and pleases with your hospitality.

Nice new hotel - great value for money

The hotel is very nice and new. Rooms, especially single rooms, are generous and nicely, modern decorated. The hotel is not in the city centre but bus connections are good and very frequent. The last bus towards the hotel leaves at 00.30h and only takes 5-10 minutes (so you could also walk the distance). Also available are bikes to rent at the hotel. And like everywhere in the Netherlands cycling paths are safe, generous and well marked.

Good budget hotel in nice location

Just outside Utrecht and close to two nice restaurants. There are frequent busses for the 10 minute ride into the centre if Utrecht if needed.
This is much cheaper than parking in the centre if Utrecht.
Rooms are clean and basic but the location is great.

OK hotel, but wouldnt stay again

The hotel is quite new, clean and has all the basics you need. I went for a short meeting to Utrecht university (Uithof) for which it was handy to walk (30 min), but not close to shops or anything else (only one restaurant). The view from my window was a horse paddock which I thought a bit boring when no horses where in it.
The decor was too minimalist and boring for me, but as I didnt spend much time there it was ok.

A hotel or a building site?

Sadly, this hotel is less than great. I arrived to find the floor of my room covered in builder's dust. One of the electric sockets came away in my hand when I tried to put a plug in. The furniture left my hands full of splinters. To be fair, the beds were comfy and the linens were clean, but they were about the only thing that was. Numerous requests for room maintenance and cleaning gave no visible results other than the offer of a different room, but I was assured that the other rooms would be the same as the hotel had only been open for two weeks. I do understand that one would expect to see a little dust given the newness of the building, but not this level. The hotel is echoey and sound travels amazingly well, meaning that, because the doors do not have sound excluding seals, you are treated to the noise of people clopping up and down the stairs all night, and the dulcet tones of patrons chatting in the foyer until 1 in the morning, then the staff preparing breakfast at 6. It wasn't exactly restful, nor was the drilling and ladders placed outside my door which woke me bright and early the following morning. Perhaps this hotel will get better once it's had time to settle and get into the rhythm of being a hotel, but I'd suggest that it's one to avoid for the next few months at least. I was supposed to stay there for 4 nights. I managed 18 hours.

Goed hotel, vriendelijk, verzorgd, ruim ontbijt, gelegen in het groen op een klein half uurtje van het centrum van het bruisende Utrecht. Bij terugkomst in de vooravond van de stad was één van onze kamers niet dicht en zat een loper nog in de kaarthouder, dit gaf ons geen veilig gevoel, en is op zijn zachtst uitgedrukt toch wel zeer slordig.

Voor ons een prima locatie, lopend binnen 20 minuten bij bezienswaardigheden waar we interesse in hadden het Rietveld Schroder huis en ook aan de rand van het centrum. Direct bij het hotel wandelde je zo het bos in. Het hotel was basic maar niets mis mee met een uitgebreid ontbijt, goede start van de dag.

We hebben het prima naar de zin gehad. Door Corona moesten we natuurlijk ontbijten op de slaapkamer. Helemaal niet erg, maar zet er dan wel twee stoelen neer i.p.v. een. Nu moet je op het bed ontbijten.
