Location was great. Staff was great. Our room was facing the hotel restaurant, could not open the window otherwise smell of food along with the the flies and the noise would come in. The room was not cleaned properly. I think they forgot to vacuum the floors or they used a mop very quickly. It felt gross to me. Bed was not the best either. Price was reasonable.

The room was tiny, most of it occupied by a king bed.
The ceiling in the washroom was wet and dripping.
On the positive side, the room was clean and the breakfast was very good! The hotel is very close to the City Gates square and the harbor.
AFAIK, there's no parking available at the hotel.
All in all, a good short stay at a reasonable cost in Ponta Delgada's downtown.

Nous sommes très satisfaits de l'emplacement à Ponta Delgada, du personnel très serviable et de la taille de la chambre et de l'entretien de la chambre. Nous avons mis 3 étoiles pour le confort parce qu'il faisait froid et humide dans la chambre le premier soir. Il n'y avait plus d'appareil de chauffage d'appoint mais, heureusement, on en a reçu un le lendemain. De plus, les lits étaient trop durs et le déjeuner manquait de choix.

Amazing staff, from the breakfast staff to the dinner staff, clean rooms, as well as the receptionist. They are all very helpful and friendly! I am happy that tradition of excellent service remains at this Hotel! Love the location as well.
My 2nd time and we will continue to go back to the same hotel.

Some sort of disco has opened next door, try to get a room away from that side or you will be hearing it until 2:30am even during the week. Too bad, this hotel is excellent except for what is out of their control.

Some noise from bar next door 2 nights of 8 but muffled with closed windows. Included breakfast was predictable each day but was quite passable for a quick bite. Many restaurants within 5 minute walk including the dock.

I recently stayed at Alcides Hotel and found it to be a charming choice for my visit, especially given its central location. The staff here were incredibly nice, making the experience all the more pleasant. A significant drawback, however, is the lack of on-site parking, and a rental car is a must to explore the area. Fortunately, there is free parking available about a ten-minute walk from the hotel.

The rooms are quite small, which is typical for older European hotels. While they provide the basic necessities and serve their purpose, the bed was extremely hard. I was thankful to have brought my own pillow. Despite being rated as a 2-star establishment, Alcides Hotel deserves a 3-star rating in my book. I’m giving it 4 stars, mainly because it offers excellent value for the price.

Overall, the property was Good: breakfasts, the dinner we had, the rooms were all as expected; the interior decor is good: the dining room had a display cabinet with an old radio set I remember from when I was a kid!! The location is a short walk (downhill) to the City Gates, good for buses, shops and marina with its shops and restaurants.
Unfortunately, we were in a street facing room where, on Wednesday night, we were woken up by music and what must have been karaoke at about 0130 (Thursday). When we made a complaint to the front desk Thursday morning, they were sympathetic and moved us to another room without issue.
They said they had previous issues with noise, even to the extent of calling the police - who would seem powerless to act, as the licence for the venue (Outrolado, next door to the hotel) is for Wednesdays to Sundays, 1900 to 0200. This venue is the only one of its sort in the area: the licence seems at odds with the locale.
Once I find out to whom to moan at in PDL, I intend to write a letter of complaint. The hotel doesn't need it and I guess, neither do any locals who live nearby.

Only book one room at a time

I booked two double rooms, one 11 months out and one 8 months out. I confirmed with them that the rooms were good since they were checking I didnt accidentally book 2 rooms.
2 weeks before they tell me that the single room wouldn't be available and wanted to see if we can take a triple room. I never booked a single room but was told that even though I paid the price for a room with a double bed because it was a single traveler they were going into the single room.
My mom rebooked herself into another hotel and let them know, waited a few days and they never cancelled my mom's room, not sure if they were hoping I forgot and they could keep it, they were surprised when I cancelled it asking if I was still planning on staying there.
I ended up getting a triple room even though I just wanted the double, not sure if they were planning on sticking us both in this room and collecting the fees for 2 rooms.
Later when checking out the 'locked' room with my bags was unlocked and the door was wide open, I walked out with my bags without telling anyone.
If you are a single visitor and want a double room, say you have two people otherwise they will downgrade you.

Great place to stay in a vibrant spot. Close to a lot of Cafes , restaurants, and a lot of things to do . Great Customer Service. Tasty breakfast with freshly squeezed orange juice .Breakfast to go was made for me with juices and yogurt. Much appreciated! They made arrangements for my taxi transport to the airport . The staff was lovely and accommodating. Breakfast was ok, but in a small area that couldn’t hold the guests so there was a wait. We left after two nights only because the A/C was broken and it was a Sunday where no one could come help. They were lovely about it, and we wish we could have stayed due to their lovely demeanor. Perfect stay! This hotel had a central location, easy to walk to restaurants and tour the town on foot, metered road parking just a few blocks away (free overnight). The staff were wonderfully cheerful, the bed comfortable and the buffet breakfast varied. The hotel restaurant is also a lovely spot for dinner but requires a reservation, as do most places in town actually. It gets busy, even in the off season.

Wonderful location, room was very clean. The attached restaurant is fabulous. Their customer service is top notch. We had come thru a couple of weeks prior to our stay and they were willing to hold items we purchased that we would pick up on our way back through - so we did not have to haul them to another island and back. We asked for a 5:30 am taxi and they made the arrangements - and the taxi was there for our ride to the airport. Would definitely stay at Alcides again!

We spent one night at Hotel Alcides pm a stopover before heading home and it was clean, comfortable and centrally located near several restaurants and a short walk to the waterfront. They do offer free breakfast which we did not get to take advantage of due to an early morning flight but they have coffee,tea and yogurt, some bread available for the early risers. The only complaint I would have is that the complimentary shampoo and body wash were in packets and very small portions.

Location is in the midst of a great area close to numerous fun restaurants, the water and public transportation. We walked everywhere in Ponta Delgada with no problems. The owner and his staff are very friendly and accommodating, we will be back!

Stayed one week in Feb 2018.
Reasonable hotel for the money.
Very nice hotel staff and a nice common lounge area with a computer station where we spent a fair bit of time reading and trying to relax..
Room was too small (maybe 110 sq. ft.?)
No chairs in room to sit on: had to sit/lie on the bed to watch TV or relax.
The ventilation system was inefficient to control the high humidity level (visible and persistent moisture on the windows and shower walls). The heating system did not function properly.
The breakfast was good but lacked any variety day to day.
Hotel is very well situated, in the center of everything.
Renovation/construction work going on during our stay produced a noisy environment and dirty dusty conditions.
I would still recommend this hotel, but would provide the foregoing feedback with the recommendation.

Only downside was the location of my room, right above the restaurant's kitchen and on the path of really loud extraction system, plus the beds are located against the wall that borders with other room bathroom and toilet, every smallest sound from shower etc in the middle of the night- not good.

Good hotel close to main tourist attractions in Ponta Delgada. Nice staff, very clean room, confortable bed. Downsides: it wad quite noisy, as our room had the view over a tavern, and the AC didn't work. I would't recommend Alcides Restaurant, it's a tourist trap, very unprofessional staff.

Hotel in perfect location

From the moment we arrived we were treated like visiting family. As we arrived early our bags were locked up and we ran out to get breakfast and to explore for a couple hours. When we returned our room was ready and Pedro and Andreia offered us a ton of tips on things to do in town and on the island. They booked a canyoning adventure for us that was a highlight of our European trip. Pedro, Andreia, and Ana who worked the breakfast area all went above and beyond to make my wife and I comfortable throughout our stay.
The room is very spacious and quiet but located a block from the gates of the city. There are many restaurants and shops close by and busses and taxis are a block away.
We would not hesitate to stay at Alcides on our next visit.

This hotel was all that we wanted: great location, modern facilities, quiet while being in the middle of things, great breakfast. And very pleasant service.

Do not hesitate to stay here. With a lobby that feels a bit dated, you will be surprised by how modern the rooms are. Make sure to ask for a room off the street if you need quiet.

Our experience was flawless. The hotel is modern, yet cozy. The room was clean, well kept and quite comfortable. The only minor issue was parking as it has two spots next to it, but compensated by the availability of paid and unpaid spots nearby, the latter slightly further away. The breakfast is well served with great food. All this made for a very nice experience, but what makes it an awesome experience is the staff. They are incredibly friendly and extremely helpful.

Best Hotel Staff

We just spent a week at the Alcides and I would definitely recommend this hotel. It was in the city and walking distance to just about anywhere. The staff was the best we have ever had and was helpful in helping us explore the city and the island. It did get a bit noisy at night as our window was next to street but not so bad that we couldn't sleep. It was also nice to have breakfast each morning.

This hotel was a great place to stay. I was there for two nights. The breakfast was great with lots of breads, meats and cheeses, fruit and beverages. Quiet hotel in city centre

We only used this hotel as an overnight stop before an early flight home. City centre hotels are usually too noisy for us, however we were given a quiet room at the back of the hotel, as we requested. The room was clean and comfortable and the bathroom facilities were very good. The reception staff were very welcoming and helpful, they booked us an early morning taxi and arranged an early breakfast for us.

From the check-in I felt like I am staying at a friend's house. Pedro, the owner is kind and attentive to his guests. The staff, especially Ruben and a young woman working the afternoon shift go an extra mile to accommodate guests. We had a lovely room on a top floor with a patio overlooking the cathedral. It was very quiet and cozy. The bathroom was pretty big, a size of a small room in some European hotels.The only noise we heard was the church bell, but it was very charming. Breakfast items were plentiful: ham, cheese, yogurts, jam, pastry, fruit, veggies. We loved the hotel location. It is a hundred yards from the main square, city and intercity buses, local tourist info office, etc. If I ever come back to Ponta Delgada, I will only stay at Alcides.

All in all.. Location couldn't have been better, staff was fantastic and helpful, and extremely clean.
(Travel tip for exploring the island: Rui is a private tour guide and taxi driver that works with the hotel. His prices are fantastic and reasonable and he gave us the absolute most informative your I've ever had. Not to mention, he is an absolute pleasure to talk with and learn from)

one night stay

My boyfriend & I booked this hotel just as a place to sleep while we waited for our flight the next day. The hotel is sorta hard to find & when we got there all the lights were turned off, but someone did come to greet us. The bed was VERY hard, but the people at the front desk were extremely friendly!
My boyfriend speaks portuguese so it made things so much easier, the area we stayed in was super close to the airport and close to the water and the town, which was perfect for us as we had a few hours to kill before we re-checked in for our flight home.

Great staff.

The stay was lovely. The placement of the property was is close proximity to everything needed. The hotel staff went above and beyond what I'd expect. The staff were very friendly and accommodating to our needs. The breakfast was very good with a good variety of fresh fruit juice, good local cheese, and wonderful fresh bread.

Central hotel with helpful staff

Centrally placed hotel in Ponta Delgada. It offered everything we needed for a 5 night stay including a good breakfast with fresh orange juice. The staff were informative and friendly and the hotel is situated a few minutes walk from the seafront and restaurants. Also, a great find for us, was Rota, an excellent vegetarian restaurant a few minutes walk away, so popular you have to book in advance.

Amazing location right in the center of everything. Staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Breakfast is decent, rooms are clean. Only issue was the doors lock at midnight and you have to ring the doorbell and wake someone up to get back in afterwards.

Nice place to stay

We stayed for 1 night there because we had to get to the airport early in the morning. The room was nice. The staff was helpful and friendly: though we had to leave at night we were provided with some breakfast (cereals, yogurt, coffee, fruits).

Our holiday in San Miguel island - Azores

The hotel is located at a great location, Pedro was super giving us all information needed and arranging the car so it will be so simple for us to receive it at the hotel and leave it there to be picked up. Breakfast was very good.
Wifi wasn't functioning on our floor and the air condition neither. In spite of these, we were very pleased choosing this hotel.
