We had a great stay at Hilton Addis Ababa. The service was wonderful and the large property allowed our kids to have plenty of space to run around and explore. We loved the play area right by the restaurant and the different sport activities available. Also loved the central location to several parks, sites, and activities.

While the Hilton staff provide unparalleled hospitality, my rooms were underwhelming. In the first room, the AC didn't work, with temperatures reaching 25.5 C / 78 F at night. Once changed, not only did the AC not work in the second room, but a large skylight allowed nighttime ambient light in + a fully bright room at 530 AM. I was offered to move rooms again, which I declined, given packing and unpacking two nights in a row for a three night stay seemed exhausting.

It seems that the room hasn’t been remodeled since built in the 1970s. The reason why shower, sink and toilet were not working properly. Requested toiletries were not delivered, even when requested for the second time.

The Hilton in Addis Ababa is one of the oldest hotels in Addis so some of the fixtures are dated but the staff were extremely kind (airport shuttle driver, clerk at check in, front of the restaurant staff (for breakfast)) - all just extremely nice. My check in process was smooth and the view was great. Finally, there was live music on the Sunday night which was really nice.

Arrived to find the room that we had reserved wasn't ready or had been given to someone else it wasn't clear. We were told our new room would have a view of the pool - it did not we looked onto a building site. Then our door wouldn't open and it took 90 minutes to fix. We were given a bowl of fruit and a bottle of Ethiopian wine as an apology.

After staying at this hotel for eight weeks uninterruptedly, on check out day, the front office summons me to vacate the room at 12 noon. They did not even have the minimum courtesy to let me and my daughter check out at 2pm. I am flabbergasted my their lack of hospitality and rudeness. I do not recommend. Beware.

Quite misleading; not worth the price.

I sincerely have bothering positive to say about this hotel:
- the place is very old and and is in desperate need of a remodel
- there’s a smell throughout the hotel and especially in the room I was staying in.
- the sauna has molds everywhere. Anyone has access to the spa and the pool; so it not just for guests. That, in my opinion, significantly eroded and depreciated the place. I couldn’t find any of the facilities they offer attractive.
- when you call the reception for a question you may have , sometimes they don’t even answer the calls. It will just continuously ring. That happened to me during daytime and also in the evening (before 7pm)
- the hotel has an airport shuttle; but you need to pay $15 for that. Not sure if that exists elsewhere; but I’ve never encountered this in the past. More importantly, at the time I was booking it was not made clear to me that this is a paying airport shuttle. By the way, one can easily get a taxi for less than half the price the hotel proposes. And there are many other hotels in the city that offer free airport shuttles.

Overall, it was a very unpleasant stay. This hotel is nowhere near the level of other Hiltons you probably stayed in. Unfortunately the price does not reflect that.

Was there for a business trip and had a problem with the hotel it is very old and in terrible need of upgrade it is very dirty and the service is terrible. The grounds are in need of updating and the pool was like a public pool with all of the city swimming in it it was gross! I had a problem with the management of the hotel as they promised me a refund of an overbooked night but then after I arrived home they took it away. I would avoid this property as it is old and dated and management is greedy and dishonest

Terrible place. Not worth the money

The place may have the Hilton name on it, but it is nothing compared to Hilton's. They should change the name to Motel 6. It was so old and nothing up to par or repaired. The air conditioner did not work. The furniture was original form the 1960's when it was built. Please stay some where else. There are so many nice places in Addis. The one good thing was the pool and fitness room. However, that was even to crowded because it is not only for guests all community people come to use the fitness center and the pool. The locker rooms were full of fungus and I didn't even dare walk around. The smell was terrible. I can't believe that Hilton allows the name to stay on the building.

While the neighborhood claimed to be secured the internal hotel security is very poor and anyone can access the guest room elevators and even your room. Yes, we had an intruder in our room and had to involve hotel security and local police. Traumatic experience and major fault in Hilton Addis Ababa's duty of care for their guests.

Great option in Addis

The Hilton Addis Ababa is a great option when visiting the city. The hotel compound is very secure, has multiple onsite restaurants as well as a grocery/market and bakery, and beautiful pools heated by natural hot springs. The beds are comfortable with multiple pillow options, and the water pressure is great (and there’s always hot water!) Wifi was fast enough for me to livestream a couple of US yoga classes. Staff were very accommodating and friendly. It’s also very close to a couple of newly-built parks: Friendship Square and Unity Park. I was also pleasantly surprised that there was live music by the pool on Sunday afternoon!

My only complaint is that I was told I couldn’t sit on the side of one of the pools to put my feet in the hot springs. I didn’t bring a swimsuit on this business trip, so I sat in shorts. Apparently this is a hotel policy, but nobody could tell me why. The pool is huge, so I don’t understand why there’s not room for both swimmers and other guests who just want to sit on the side with their feet in the warm water while reading?

AC did not work throughout the stay and they could not make it work till the end. We had to sleep with a fan. Sink was partially blocked and they did not fix it till the end. The shower was functioning like a water pipe not doing any functions of a shower. We made repeated complaints but no response.

I booked 18 nights stay at this hotel mainly because of the prestige name “Hilton” and the high standards it holds. I was a little disappointed. The outdoor space was the main attraction for me. It has a heated pool which was nice. The service was superb. Great employees who would go above and beyond to help. They do have an in-house doctor and nurse which was a plus. My fiancé felt sick one night and we were able to contact the doctor and nurse. The interior was outdated but I think there’re in the process of refurbishing the entire hotel in phases. To put it in perspective, our bathtub paint was half pealed off, the rooms and hallway carpet were old and dusty. The heater/AC was blowing out dust so we didn’t use it for the entire stay.The quality of the Hotel food was poor. Overall, this is one of the safest hotel in Addis and I’m optimistic that management will continue to improve their standards by updating the hotel rooms, interior space, and hotel food quality.

We checked in and got given dirty rooms - in a very tired, dated hotel. When we told the front desk duty manager that the rooms were dirty, she said 'That is what you paid for'. She then told us to sit down, as we shouldn't complain in front of other guests - and kept us waiting 20 minutes. After that, she was very keen to give us an upgrade. The rooms were much nicer - but the WiFi didn't work properly and one of the rooms had a cockroach. (All fairly harmless things, but avoidable). Food quality to the rooms was poor and the balcony door didn't close - required a technician to come and put in a temporary solution. Totally understand that it's Ethiopia - and some things won't be the same - but dirty rooms, cold food at this price should not happen.

This hotel is an amazing throwback to another era. The hotel is a delightful oasis in Addis Ababa, it covers a huge area. In addition to the hotel, there's an Ethiopian Airlines office, travel agencies, variour retail, a supermarket - Rift Valley wine sold there - The property was full of life brought by tourists, NGO and other business people, and locals out for a good time. The bars and restaurants are excellent, the food was very good. The room felt like 1962 - great style, very clean, and everything worked fine. If you want a 21st century place with no character, this is not your place. I will be back here when I'm in Addis again.

Don’t stay here ever!

This hotel is in decrepit condition. The room wasn’t ready for check in despite arriving at 6:30pm. The way to the room was dirty with rubbish strewn on the floor. The toilet didn’t flush. The service was appalling. I will never recommend that hotel to anyone I actually like!

The Hilton was consistently rated as one of the best properties. At just under $300 a night we thought we were guaranteed a reasonable room. However, the property itself was stuck in the 1970’s needing an uplift. The room was even worse. The bathroom, in particular needed to be gutted. The tub had stains, the tiles had blackish grout and the caulking was pulling away in places all over the bathroom. The main room had poor lighting requiring us at times to use a flashlight. Electrical plugs were in short demand. However, on a positive note, the staff were friendly and efficient, although the restaurants were somewhat understaffed. The food was acceptable but for the size of property having only a buffet, bar and outdoor casual fare seemed inadequate. There was another sit down restaurant cited but was never opened when we were there. In short we would not stay there again. Extremely disappointing.

Hilton is the happening place in Addis. Lots of people meet here and weddings seem to always be in progress. We like this hotel because it's hopping with local people hosting special events. I also like the specialty shops, but be forewarned, they don't take credit card and will do everything to get American dollars/cash. Very frustrating if you're at the end of your trip and your trying to get rid of Birr. ATM's here only dispense Birr and half the ATMs don't work or have spotty service. Lack of internet is a big frustration for this hotel - it's the Hilton. It feels like customers shouldn't have to deal with this problem even if the rest of the city is. And staff don't do much to help. They don't offer running credit cards manually. Just be prepared the pretty things you like to buy may be totally inaccessible if the internet is down.

One of the older nice hotels in Addis, seemingly recently renovated and in good shape. Large grounds with lots of green. Try to get a room overlooking the back/pool. On site pool, spa, volley ball, tennis, mini golf, shops, and more. Not much authentic (or inauthentic) Ethiopian food available at the buffets, but decent food nonetheless. Good pizza down by the pool. Expensive dinner buffet, I wish I had chosen something else. Overall, I’d very likely stay here again next time in Addis (and already did stay twice on this trip around the country).

Very run down and stupidly overpriced

I am baffled. Being an business traveller with a large amount of hotel nights during the year, I have never before seen this combination of poor service, overprices and a run down facility. This is my 10th visit to Addis. The hotel should clearly have been a thorough renovation a decade or two ago - the bathroom reminds of what I find in more remote areas of Africa when you can expect poor craftmanship. My room was around $150/ night, breakfast is another $20US. The Internet only works in some parts of the hotel, but you can buy an extra package for more stable connection. My colleagues laughed when they found out I was at the Addis Hilton, apparently recognised as the place never to stay - wish I had known.

Oh, and just a few more things. Check in took 20 minutes even though they had all my information, my luggage was not brought to the room - I had to fetch it from a pile of luggage in reception when I found out - I was not given Internet password but had to find out from other staff members myself. The minibar is not stocked and the remote in the room is not working. It is just beyond me that service can be so poor and stupidly overpriced.

Poorly kept old hotel

The Hilton Addis is such a poorly maintained hotel. They tried to refresh the rooms recently but the changes are not only cosmetic but actually almost unnoticeable.

The restaurants are just awful. The one by the pool always looks like a mess and the food tastes poorly (which is rich of them considering food in Ethiopia is so delicious and world famous. The main restaurant is way too small but the size is actually not a big problem as most frequent guests avoid eating there because it is simply not good.

The pool looks amazing with the cross shape. However, the whole pool area feels like some cheap family club. As you enter the pool area you have to sign in for a towel (yes, like in a big resort in Mexico in the 1980’s!) and off you go through the gate (the whole pool is cordons off). Pool water is from a hot spring so it is great. But I don’t know if they are cutting costs or what, in recent years the pool has only been half filled. And mine you, they frequently close the whole pool for cleaning without prior notice and they may take days to complete it. Absolutely crazy! And they don’t care if their clients are left without a pool, and won’t tell you before you come so if the pool is important to you, call them first.

The rooms: I admit I like the original locally built wooden furniture they current have in the rooms. It is so lot of fashion that it makes it look cool. However the bathroom is a dump, and th rooms are always dirty. Not to mention the corridors!

GREAT stay after initial concerns.

We were initially concerned about the Hilton due to its age and appearance. We were moved to 3 rooms on arrival as the 1st had a bad view and the 2nd was too close to a service lift that was being refurbed. The staff could not do enough for us and moved us without fuss, the 3rd room was excellent, clean, comfortable and roomy. The hotel had everything we needed food, shops and super leisure facilities, a great base for our day trips around Addis.

We only ate at the hotel and got massive bowel infection. Asked to fix water in room, 2 days cold water only after many requests to have it fixed. On last day they moved us. No apology when we left, very disappointed.

Still Attractive

Now in its 47th year the Hilton continues to be an attractive option for a stay in Addis Ababa due mainly to its spacious and well landscaped location, heated outdoor swimming pool, restaurants and other amenities. Service is capable, friendly and efficient. However, the rooms are a little dated now and bathroom fittings are not always reliable. Some renovation here would be welcome.

This Hilton property is to be avoided

Everything is worn out, old and falling apart. Be careful, don't pay too much if you have to stay at the Hilton Addis, you will be disappointed.

Happening place but spoil my mood at the END

Nice hotel and its like city . No need to go outside for any thing.
good SECURITY.

but a mood spoiler . A s they said internet was free for MEMBERS so i became member and used internet free for my stay time. BEFORE leaving the HOTEL and i finished all my DUE and AND REMAINING ACCOUNT ON THE RECEPTION.

BUT WHEN I REACHED HOME TO MY COUNTRY I FOUND THEY HAVE CHARGED ME EXTRA FOR INTERNET. AND IT WASN'T INFORM TO ME AND THEY CHARGED WITHOUT INFORMING ME.

AND NEXT DAY WHEN I CALL THEM THEY TOLD IT IS AUTOMATICALLY CHARGED BY THE SYSTEM AS ITS NOT UNDER THEIR CONTROL.

NO REFUND AND NO GOOD ANSWER.

AS INTERNET WAS FREE THEN ALSO THEY CHARGED AND ALSO THEY CANNOT DO ANY THING FOR IT. SUCH A NICE REPLY.

This place is a classic. Not the glitz of the new Sheraton, but a landmark from 1969... depends on your liking, but I prefer the glamour and history of this style of hotel any day! Only drawback is shower water pressure, which is not insurmountable, otherwise it is excellent.

The hotel needs renovation as it's very old, plus the food was not up to expectations.
