I didn’t like the lack of knowledge of the reception staff about booking with expedia. I resented the fact that my credit card details were asked to verify my booking on the day of checking out. They had all week to do that. I had to show them the receipt on expedia account on my mobile.

The Ghion short visit.

It's the end of winter time and the rooms were cold. The hot water does not come on after 11pm sometimes. It's only one key so housekeeping can't clean your room when you are out. Walls are very thin because I can hear chatter. Staff are quite lovely, helpful and friendly. Food is very good. Location is ideal for going to your business meeting or for site seeing this beautiful city Addis Ababa.... Lots of incredible history to soak in for the first time.

I had a very disappointing experience during my recent stay at Ghion Hotel.
• Day One: The room assigned to me had no hot water. As usual, I was advised to let the water run for some time. Despite running the bathtub for nearly two hours, no hot water came, and I was forced to bathe in freezing cold water.
• Day Two: I was moved to another room, but the toilet did not flush.
• Later Stay: After returning from a trip, I was given a room where the toilet burst and water flooded the entire room while I was away. I was then moved again to a different room, which also had no hot water and a non-functional toilet.
I am a frequent guest at Ghion Hotel, but in its current condition, I strongly urge Expedia to reconsider listing it on their platform. I also request a full refund for this stay due to the unacceptable conditions and repeated inconveniences.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

An awful start to my stay at the hotel and arrival in Ethiopia
They left me stranded at the airport at night for hours despite me contacting them on 4 occasions prior to my arrival. and hotels.com contacted them twice too l when I had zero reply on the airport shuttle. They failed to respond or provide this and when you don’t know the language and your phone doesn’t work in this country - as i explained to them - it leaves you in a very vulnerable position. When I wanted to leave after several other things not working the hotel refused to refund me as unfortunately I paid upfront. Hotels.com also extremely unhelpful

We really valued our stay at the Ghion Hotel. The rates were excellent, the staff are lovely and it's a real piece of Ethiopian history. The African Jazz Village is top notch and home to the timeless Father of Ethiopian Jazz, Dr. Mulatu Astateke. Meals were copious and delicious - Breakfast is free! We are used to staying at more modern (read: updated) luxurious places but I'd go back for the charm, people and music.

The garden area is really good, spacious and well kept with ample security. The staff are very polite and helpful.
The T.V situation is poor and needs attention. There are no Tea or coffee making facilities and some of the rooms are void of a fridge.
I found the hotel good value for money and will definately try to rebook.

Shopper beware. I stay in hotels 200 nights a year I always look for the best in spite of potential surprises in a hotel. I read the reviews for this hotel prior to booking and thought it couldn’t be that bad. After all, it was self described with 4 stars and the pics looked wonderful. I should say the nature around the hotel was stunning and extremely impressive as was security for such a large complex. The WiFi was a major challenge going in/out with no consistency. I booked for 2 adults. At breakfast time I asked for a glass of water and found there was an extra charge, I was billed for the second adult breakfast even though the Orbitz confirmation indicated free breakfast for two. If you’re interested in using the gym there was a charge There was a beautiful Olympic size pool on the property but it too had a charge. The employees were not friendly especially those in the breakfast hall. The lady who checked me in was very nice but after so many problems I just couldn’t wait to check out. The interior and exterior of the hotel needs a major renovation. I won’t return again. Rate: 2/10

They charged my credit card for no reason and declined to refund. I called so many times but nobody willing to refund. They offered reimbursement in kind. That being said the breakfast is very good and they have a beautiful compound. It has a big potential if they have a good management.

Reservation was totally screwed up to the point where my three traveling companions and I ended up sharing one room (two single beds and two mattresses on the floor) after previously making reservations for two rooms for two people each. Since the Ghion had \"lost\" our reservations (which I don't believe since they later \"found\" mine) they also didn't provide a shuttle from the airport. A totally dissatisfying experience on all levels.

I have been staying at the Ghion Hotel when in Addis for the past three years,3+ times/year. It was great to see the improvements being made on this visit. The food was also much better at the non-traditional restaurants. The traditional food restaurant and food has always been good and reasonable.

This hotel has a fabulous location. I know it from old and it is disappointing to visit and not have water in the room and especially hot water - there is a randomness to water.
The hotel feels \"tired\" and even the once lovely gardens are lacking colour and care
The staff in the bar and restaurant are most helpful and pleasant, reception less so.
Sadly after knowing this hotel and using it for more than 20 years, I fell I cannot stay again.
No car arrived at the airport to collect me despite this being on offer.

Did not have any record of my reservation - I had to pay a second time to get my room around mid night.
There were other guests with the same problem who had booked through sites other than Expedia.
Ghion Hotel does not reply to e-mails - although a phone in request for the airport shuttle was honored.

This hotel is denying that I paid through expedia, although I have my receipts. They are forcing me to pay again at the hotel, which is unacceptable. It is not fair to charge twice for a mediocre room. This is the worst hospitality and customer service i have ever experienced in any hotel in my life. I am wasting a vacation day in Addis trying to deal with this.

Great staff but wifi is only downstairs. Beds are small for twins in my opinion. Hot wated takes 20 min to heat up. Restaurant is good. Hotel amenities such as spa and gym are not included. Must pay.

Hotel a bit old n Tired but staff friendly. Phone didnt work in room so they upgraded me to a quiet Bungalow in the back for free. Quite spacious, nice gardens and a variety of indoor and outdoor eating areas. They said Wifi didnt work in room but I found I connected OK.

The prearranged and confirmed airport shuttle failed to turn up so I had to get an expensive taxi, Apparently the driver 'forgot'.
I needed the shuttle back to the airport the following morning at 6am and was assured this would not be a problem. However when I got to reception I had to wake the sleeping staff and then pressure them repeatedly to find some transport which eventually arrived 45 minutes late. The checkout staff were inefficient and rude.

The Ghion hotel, once a jewel of Addis Ababa, is very ran down and dilapidated. Now rated to be a 2* by Ethiopian tourism board, the prices proposed are ridiculously high and the room description is deceptive:
- there is no internet in the room, only in the lobby
- phones do not work in every room (therefore impossible to order room service, for instance)
- rooms and bathrooms need a very serious freshening-up
- bed felt like a bathtub on springs
- hotel staff struggles to deal with Expedia bookings

Nasty mold bathroom no wash towels, u must bring your own, no working, TV, pool close at 4pm, only lobby wifi, Shower broken had to change my room. No hot water. I requested refund but made online payment. please remove this hotel. I will not recommended. The bed was a super tiny twin bed. carpet was dirty. This was the worst stay and very overpriced. Please refund me, room price 10dollars would be fair. Staff is fraud local calls are free. So I was refunded quickly when I requested to speak to manager.

WORST. HOTEL. EVER.

The receptionist couldn't find my reservation when I arrived. I figured they'd find it later. But later the manager demanded that I pay again to the hotel directly, just because he couldn't find an email. Of course I refused. We argued for an hour. I showed him my booking confirmation email and even my credit card statement, but he insisted that I had to produce documentation that only Hotels.com would have.

Finally he said he needed a hard copy of the confirmation email. I figured all I had to do was forward him the email, and he could print it out. \"I don't have email,\" he said. To which I responded, \"Has it occurred to you that maybe that's why you haven't received an email from the website?\"

The manager pointed me to the business center, where I printed out the confirmation email for him. The woman who ran the business center then wanted to charge me for the printing. I said to the manager that he had to be kidding, that I had to pay for printing when I was only doing it on his behalf. \"No, you pay,\" he said. \"You pay.\"

Additionally, theft was rampant throughout the hotel. I met a group of Americans who were staying there. And three of them had their laptops stolen from their rooms. The hotel never took any responsibility and instead made accusations against them.

They also reported fleas in their rooms, and some showed me their flea bites. Thankfully I didn't have this problem myself.

Hotellet ligger i en grøn oase og bygningerne er smagfulde. Man kommer ind i et dejligt nedkølet hotel. De gav mig en virkelig tidlig indtjekning. Jeg kunne godt sove i sengen, men det så ud som om, de var ved at skifte sengene ud. Morgenmaden var traditionel etiopisk. Lækkert personale. Fjernsynet reagerede ikke. Internettet virkede stabilt. Jeg tror jeg vil bruge det en anden gang. Der er udendørs svømmehal lige uden for. Tæt på 4 stjerner.

Classic Ethiopian hotel

This hotel is excellent for those of us who love Ethiopia and prefer peaceful, nostalgic atmosphere to fancy, noisy modern hotels. Good old Ethiopian style hotel with a huge and quiet compound with large swimming pool, in the heart of the city. Stable water supply, electricity and Wifi with satisfying speed. Fair room rates. In every way a very pleasant stay. Take the opportunity to experience this classic hotel before it's gone!

Sehr schönes und sauberes Zimmer. Parkanlage war auch sehr schön.
Expedia sollte die Hotelbeschreibung anpassen: Tennisanlage nicht vorhanden, Fitnessstudio gehört nicht dem Hotel an, sondern wird privat geführt. Nur gegen eine monatliche Mitgliedschaft nutzbar. Warmwasser selten vorhanden.
Das Ghion Hotel muss unbedingt am Management arbeiten und sich verbessern. Zum einen war trotz 2-maliger schriftlicher Benachrichtigung der kostenfreie Flughafen Shuttle Bus nicht da. Mitten in der Nacht mussten wir ein Taxi selber organisieren, telefonisch war niemand zu erreichen. Dort angekommen, war zunächst einmal alles dunkel, erst als das Taxi vorfuhr, kam der Portier, um die Tür zu öffnen. Erste Frage: haben Sie gebucht? Wir konnten dies bestätigen, dass wir vor 4 Monaten gebucht und eine Bestätigung des Hotels bekommen hatten. Zur Antwort kam: wir haben kein Zimmer frei. Erst nach langer Diskussion ist der Manager gekommen und hat uns ein schreckliches Zimmer für die Nacht gegeben. Wir haben später verstanden, dass es wohl daran liegen musste, dass die Afrikanische Union zum Zeitpunkt eine Versammlung hatte und die Zimmer (wir hatten eine Suite gebucht) doppelt verkauft wurden.
Nach Beendigung der AU Versammlung, kam der Baustellenlärm hinzu. Die Bauarbeiten in der Hotel-Parkanlage gingen 24 Stunden, so dass man in der Nacht kein Schlaf fand. Nachdem wir (und andere Hotelgäste) uns beschwert hatten, reduzierte sich am 3. Tag der Baustellenlärm auf die Zeiten 7:00 bis 22:00 Uhr.

No shuttle service

I tried to call them from Japan because I wanted to make sure that the shuttle bus would come to the airport to pick me up . However, the phone numbers are old, and I have never got to reach them. Shuttle bus never showed up when I have arrived at the airport despite the fact I have booked the shuttle service when I booked the room on this hotel. I am no satisfied with this hotel service

レセプションのスタッフも英語が話せる人とそうでない人の差が激しい。
ホットシャワーも出ると言われたがほぼ水でシャワーを浴びるのが辛かった。

Ghion is an old hotel, and a good option for a very affordable hotel ideally located in the heart of Addis-Abeba.
The bed is quite confortable but the bathroom and the water-heating system is from another century... quite slow to get some reasonably hot water.
Sound isolation is quite bad. The hotel itself is quiet, but we hear the noise of the street constantly, including some very early morning religious chants.
Breakfast is included, quite nice buffet with typical ethiopian specialties.
Receptionists are friendly and willing to help, specially when you need a taxi. But communication is sometimes complicated.

In spite of that their facilities show in some parts the time passing, all staff is very attentive and efficient; gardens are enjoyable, also the Jazz club, is well ocated near the National Museum, bus and metro stations, view from Woreknesh Genet Restaurant.
