Bathroom was not clean, toilet or shower. Heat pump was only blowing cold air. Reception was very unhappy when we arrived and when I complained before check out she looked under pressure and upset as there were other people staying wanting to complain. Her welfare I was concerned about and could very well be an investigation by the council. The lifts had mixed messages on how many people can be in lift and also the weight on 3 stickers were all different. There was no certification ticket any where. The stairs were out of commission so what does one do in a fire???? The Hamilton City council have a lot to explain as does the hotel. No one was available to take our complaints after hours. The VR in the name must stand for Very Rundown. Shocking stay!!!

The hotel staff gave a congested parking lot just in the corner of building pillar, despite there were lots of empty and easy parking lot. Besides, paying $20 extra for parking, I got narrow parking lot and car's mirror struck on pillar edge.

The room was in the corner side, but it was shown different room while I booked for it. The strong scent was being used into room and I struggled to tolerate it. Additionally, that room was not quiet, some noise was coming from aircon and noise of a machine from outside of this building for the whole night. Overall, the experience was really awful.

We were in Three rooms, and the rooms were old, dirty, and had holes in the bath tiles, showers did not work properly, service staff could bairly understand english!! only good thing was location! dont know how it has 4 stars, smashed windows and doors, very disappointing!

The rooms were large and clean, however the air-con wasn't great, and they had plumbing issues.
Communication from the hotel via the hotels.com messaging service prior to arrival was non-existent.
Not worth the $200+ per night.

Love the 20s-vibe of the furnishings and the vastness of its rooms - even the smallest room has space for an extra bed or two! The larger rooms are like a suite! And being central its great for restaurants and cafes just outside the door. This is our go-to hotel in the Tron every time :)

Walked into the room and immediately noticed stains on the bedding, hair left in the shower, hair tie left on the floor so clearly not vacuumed or checked thoroughly, also huge hole in the wall. Aircon leaked and wouldn't allow heat to be turned on even though it was cold. Elevator very old and if it breaks down with you on it you risk getting fined $2000… Staff were fine.

It was a cheap deal for one night stay at the weekend. But you get what you pay for. It was generally clean, good air conditioning and excellent location.
But it's a tired hotel in need of refurbishment. The bathrooms have some weird stairs to the bath that's a serious slip hazard.
It smells of febreeze and there's a low humming from an industrial fan or something.

The walls are paper-thin. Neighboring guests had a party at 3pm and again at 1am. No parties allowed, but it's not strictly enforced. Listened to a couple fight on my floor at 1 or 2am. This place would benefit for some after hours security and desk assistance.

But its cheap for a clean place to sleep (if you have ear plugs)
Do not recommend on a weekend, if you have young kids, or solo female traveler. Bring earplugs and lots of patience.

Friendly staff. It is a bed for the night at a cheap price. Shower had no pressure. Handy to casino and theres heaps of food options down the street. Budget accommodation- if you are just wanting a cheap place for the night this would do. Lift was under maintenance and going up the stairs with bags to 2nd floor was a mission.

The staff member that greeted us on arrival was rather abrupt and unfriendly.
The room was good. There was a note in the bathroom about it being slippery and we were very careful but I think providing a mat or a couple of bath mats would have helped. Particularly after a shower the entire floor was wet.

The rooms are tidy and a generous size. Location is great and we did expect a level of noise being right in the CBD but it was incredibly noisy and we barely got any sleep. We heard fights outside on the road in the wee hours of the morning. Such a shame because the hotel and facilities are nice and great for the price, shame Hamilton a night is so feral.

Broken toilet and mould in the bathroom tiles. Despite being in a central location, the accommodation was poorly managed. Parking is “first come, first served” regardless of how far in advance you book, which shows a lack of organisation. Guests should be able to reserve parking with their room. The nearest paid parking is a 5-minute walk away, which made this a terrible choice, especially on a rainy day. If you’re driving, look elsewhere. And if you care about a clean, well-maintained bathroom, this isn’t the place for you.

Room was spacious, and bed was completely clean. Curtains were thick enough that light didnt come through in the mornings and for the most part, little to no noise could be heard. Bathroom overall was also quite spacious. Only gripe would be that the bathroom is unusually high for me being such a short person. Otherwise, beautifully priced and very happy overall.

The car park was very small, i was lucky i was on a swift if i had taken my holden i dont think i would have been able to get in and out of my car if others had parked next to me. The elevator needs repairs and was really shaky going up and down. Bathroom in my room, you could see the grim on the floors rubbish left in the room under the landline phone. The view from the room was ok could see the night life. Staff are friendly

Worst hotel we have ever been to. We felt so unsafe we left after an hour after an altercation between a guest and reception and going in to our room to find nothing like the pictures or reviews.
Got to room to find broken stairs to climb, blocked toilet, ripped curtains, very run down, windows didn’t close etc.
Refund was refused which was really disappointing seeing as we didn’t even unpack.

The \"Superior Queen\" room was two mattresses pushed together, which meant a couple couldn't sleep together in the middle of the bed , but instead had to sleep separately on each side of the crack between the 2 mattresses. We were also told there was a dining room to have breakfast, but there was not. There was not booklet in the room regarding the hotel and its services or what was available, along with safety instructions in case of emergency. No ice available, rail in bathroom fell down when you tried to take the towel off. Shampoowas supposed to be conditioning but left my hair in a tangle. Booked and paid for 2 nights but only stayed the 1 night. Would not recommend this hotel to anyone i know.

The whole place is not good. The Staff were not that helpful, I was charge extra for parking, the parking place was very small and terribly looking. The room is nothing compare to what it’s on the website, windows do not have protection agains noise given it is located on the CBD, you could hear all the noise. The place is old and dirty, the bedroom was smelly, one of the lamps did not work and the room was dark. The power went off two times, the air con was super noisy (not sure if it has been serviced). Not a good experience at all for the cost.

We liked the size of the room
We didn't like that the property as a whole was old and tired and things were worn, eg. windowsills were rotting, the stair rails had been fixed with bits of metal
The toilet broke during the night, fortunately my husband is hand and managed to fix it but found it had previously been repaired with wire which had rusted.
The room smelt damp.
The reception staff were polite but not really welcoming, seemed a little disinterested. We had asked for a late checkout but then found we'd been locked out of our room when we got back after breakfast

The location was handy so we could walk to places to eat.

We liked that the accommodation was in the central city and easily walkable to shops, restaurants and surrounding areas. The beds were very comfortable.

Although we were aware that the VR is a very old building, and relatively inexpensive, the decor of the place is also very old and rundown. There was paint and wallpaper peeling off and signs of water damage was evident (we couldn't smell dampness though). With it being central city, you do get a fair bit of noise from the street - due to old building/no double glazing etc.

FIRSTLY.. Booked and paid for our room prior to leaving Gisborne, then i was told id require a BOND which was NOT stipulated in the booking of the room or the confirmation email and was disregarded when i brought it up with the reception when i checked in..
SECONDLY.. I wanted to bath my babies before dropping them to my sisters house but was told NO visitors.. Wed jst driven from Gisborne and my kids wanted me to bathe them but felt like a f***ing prison where u had no way of doing anything that you needed to do..
THIRDLY.. Our key card did not work and there was no one at reception to help and i couldnt find anything on the stupid paper they gave us at check in with a contact number for the manager or anyone.. I had to ring an Auckland manager to assist with that issue.. Myself and my toddler were left in the f***ing corridor outside our room waiting for someone to answer a f***ing phone call.. It was after 10pm, I had a toddler who was hungry and tired, needed a bath and to be put to bed but UNFORTUNATELY for us.. We couldnt get in the room because the stupid receptionist didnt do her job right the first time.. Luckily the lovely lady that did help us was absolutely amazing.. BUT this could have been avoided..
LASTLY.. A refund of my bond money should have been in my account within the hour but nothing.. U took the last of my money easily but havent given it back yet.. WILL NEVER BOOK WITH THESE PEOPLE AGAIN.. Everything about this place was COLD and Lonely
