If you’re looking for a world-class JW Marriott experience, this may not be the place. Our stay was a mixed experience, with some clear highlights and some notable disappointments.

The good:
The location is excellent, easy to walk around, convenient access to public transportation, and simple to get an Uber. It’s close to shopping and the Design Plaza, which was a big plus. The breakfast spread is great, with lots of variety and options. I also really enjoyed the gym and pool facilities, and I had a massage at the spa which I highly recommend. The staff, especially the doormen, were friendly and welcoming.

The not-so-good:
The property feels old and dated, and the rooms clearly show signs of aging. Our headboard had stains, and the shower had brown stains/mold, which was disappointing for a JW Marriott. We arrived at night and received no assistance with our luggage, despite there being two people at reception. We also tried the buffet dinner one evening, which was underwhelming — cold food and no refills. That said, the duty manager Amy handled the situation well and provided good service once we raised these concerns.

Overall, the location and amenities are strong, but the hotel would greatly benefit from a major refresh to truly meet JW Marriott standards.

And I also need to mention how clean our rooms were every single day, the housekeeping staff thoroughly cleaned and supplied the room perfectly, I think the hotel itself, the physical aspects are fine, but what makes the property special are the well trained and professional and friendly staff.

Flawless from start to finish.

My wife and I stayed here as part of our South Korea trip. Although our 2.5 year old wasn’t with us she would have had a wonderful time if she was.

Staff were friendly and smiling; from the first doorman that greeted us, to the reception staff, restaurant staff and gym staff. We felt the staff were especially professional and wouldn’t let us lift a finger.

The property is clean, modern and impressive. It is connected to the Dongdaemun metro station which makes getting about very easy. The gym is truly outstanding, as is the swimming pool (with a small toddlers pool full of about 100 rubber ducks).
We had an executive room with a wonderful gate view which was large and modern. It had lounge access and we felt the food offerings were of a great quality.

When I was booking I couldn’t decide between this and the Westin Josun so I booked both. I’m now at the Westin and wish I could go back to the JW Dongdaemun as the Westin is not in the same league.

When a team works well, this is what you get 10/10. And at this scale, a hotel. The executive suite is the home away from home. There are many staff members to be compliments. Allen and Jessica from the front office are polite and give clear information. The concierge and bell desk team is exceptional, a shout out to David. I stayed for a week and watched the breakfast room team work effortlessly and dedication to details. Attentive Justin, the ever sweet, smiley Daisy and Danny - from the noodle station. One can see they are beyond happy and pride in doing what they do. Last but not least, the housekeeping team. When I departed for the airport, how the team worked hand in hand handling the luggage, the doors, and watching out for the traffic was perfection. Thank you, and Marriot Dongdaemun will be my 1st choice when I visit Korea the next time 🙂

Very happy stay in Seoul

I have been lucky to be able to have stayed in many 5 starts places, for example The Peninsula Tokyo, and I have to say that the service at the JW Marriott Dongdaemun Seoul has one of the best service I have ever received, the crew went far and beyond to make me feel happy and welcome, from Kate at the front desk, to Miss Moon and Ian at the bar and the crew at Tavolo 24, smiles and great great service. The Spa experience was very nice also. The room decoration is a little bit outdated, but still a very pleasant bedroom, with all amenities even a hair flat iron. Most of the rooms have a view of Heunginjimun Gate as well as the restaurant and rooftop bar. You have cheonggyecheon stream right there, if you like walking like me, you can walk from to In-sadong , Myeongdong, gyeongbokgung palace, following the stream, beautiful walk in the middle of Seoul. If you don’t like walking, the metro line 4, is also right there in the corner and takes you also to Eujiro, Myeongdong, straight to Ichon (Korea National Museum) and basically everywhere you want to go. Shopping is good too, Doota and Hyundai malls are 5 min walk and also DDP Design Plaza is right there 5 min walk, the hotel is great value for money. I definitely recommend this hotel.

I cannot express how amazing this hotel was. The room was spacious and comfortable. The food at the hotel was fabulous. We will go back for the service. The staff at the JW Marriott was exceptional. Great place for tourists. Check out markets that opens from 12 am (mid night market for clothing) Sunday to Thursday. Kwangjang market is only 7 min walk and offer lots of place to eat. We had a mixed situation where wife had to tend to some family business while, at the same time we both had to continue working (in US time).
We both had to be on the phone or Virtual meetings during night time in Korea.
The only thing we had to adapt was to move to a larger room (suite) where we could each talk without disturbing the other.
The hotel had no problem accommodating that.
Accommodations are great, and, if you have access to the lounge, you have your breakfast and dinner.
Subway stations are steps away, so you can be anywhere anytime.

We stayed for two nights and had the most enjoyable experience.
Great service, wonderful room with view on the ancient city gate.
The Executive Lounge offered nice food and drink options during their \"happy hours\" and it was nice to also be able to enjoy the indoor swimming pool (after vaccination check).
Overall one of the best stays we had in Korea. Would always visit again.

Great hotel

Well located to many shopping malls and two major stations. There is a lot around the area that is open for 24 hours, so if you were jet lagged liked me, it was a great place to stay. The hotel is clean and the rooms are surprisingly large (stayed in a twin room where we had two double beds). Very clean and the staff is super helpful. Would highly recommend staying here.

The staff was extremely cordial and helpful. This is not a large hotel. Rooms are small by Western standard even after upgrade. Room did have a view. Hotel located in front of subway station. There is shopping across the street and small restaurants that open 24 hours few minutes walking distance to hotel. Hotel provided us with printouts of places to eat after midnight. Hotel does not have airport shuttle. I was happy with my stay for one night.

Everyone was very kind, and they upgraded our room, so we were so grateful. Although there was some brown spots on the side of toilet, the over all room condition was above average with a great view of the city. Happy Hr was awesome with excellent quality of food-maybe except for the marinated pork. Looking forward to come back soon. Definitely one of my favorite 5star hotels in Seoul.

very surprise on the service of this 5 star well known hotel.

the staff are not well trained or they even do not have such knowledge? eg: breakfast finish at 10:30am and the staff will start to block the toilet for cleaning and mod the floor even there are still guest having breakfast.

not worth to go for executive club or breakfast, below average.

too many minor things you thought that is for sure in 5 star hotel but you need to \"asking for it\" here.

location is great and hardware is great.

Great hotel, great location and genuine service

The stay at JW Marriott was amazing. My kids enjoyed their stay and the room was spacious enough for us (2 adults & 2 young kids). The staff there were all very helpful and friendly and my kids especially remembered “Jerry”, they were always looking forward to see him! Too bad they couldn’t bid him goodbye when we check out. We will definitely come back here again if we come to Korea.

View outside the hotel was amazing. Definitely sign up for the lounge access. Very worth it. Room smelled must and shower caulk was moldy

Neighborhood is not good. Really cheap thrift stores on all four sides. No good restaurants nearby.

I would advise choosing a better neighborhood after more research.

Great Seoul hotel

This is a fantastic hotel for Seoul leisure or business travellers. Location is great, right in dongdaemun square and close to many restaurants and shopping. It is also right on a subway. Room was very large with high quality finishes, very new condition and very clean. The gym and pool were fantastic, probably the best hotel facilities we have seen. Gym was extremely large and very complete. One negative is that the restaurants and bars in the hotel are extremely overpriced, like ridiculously so (US$30 for the cheapest cocktail). Don’t bother and eat at other nearby establishments. Look for rates with breakfast included as the cost at the hotel is extraordinary.

Hotels.com does not offer the best rooms

We had a lovely time at this hotel in large part because we upgraded to a much better room. The original room was on the third floor with minimal windows.
For another $100 per night we upgraded to 9th floor with great views, happy hour and fantastic breakfast included. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

The only thing i didn’t like is that they charge to go into the sauna. Normally in any hotel in the world you can go to the sauna for free if you are staying in the hotel. I was disappointed

Not worth the price and bad up selling tactics

They tried to upsell me. Told me there were no double bed rooms and the hotel was clearly not full. They lied about not having a standard double bed room available and tried to sell me a suite room. Also, my cousins who live in Korea came to the hotel and the staff was snobby to them. I will not be staying at a Marriott again. I am a Hilton gold member and will be staying with them from now on.

The hotel was in a great location and very well equiped, with a great view of the old wall gate.
One item was that the small fridge did not seem to stop running during my stay and the noise was not quite what I wanted to hear when going to sleep.

Pro: The property was in nice location and room was in good condition.
Cons:
1. Staff (Bora) took more than 30 minutes for the check in process to be completed. First she gave me a corner room that has completely blocked view with no lights. I am claustrophobic so when trying to explain, without trying to listen she insisted me to wait.
2. Breakfast buffet menu could be improved for pescetarians and vegetarians.
3. Breakfast restaurant staff and front desk staff's attitude and professionalism could be improved with less system errors and less waiting time.
4. Stayed two nights with breakfast inclusive first morning was fine, second day they (Summer) said breakfast was not included, so they had to check the system which made me wait 15 min in the hallway. They told me the system had error but without any apologies.
5. The waiting time to get plastic utensils was again 30 minutes without any explanation or apologies.
6. Soundproof of the walls were not in great shape. Could hear TV sound and conversational sounds from next door.
7. Hallway smelled moldy.
