Elegant. friendly, comfortable, inexpensive.

This hotel is ideally situated near to the Grote Markt and Cathedral.

It is in a handsome old building, which has a peaceful central courtyard for sitting in (to cool down in summer? - we were here in autumn, so didn't need it but it would be delightful were one to need a rest from sightseeing).

The interior has been tastefully modernised. Because the building is listed, no lift has been installed (no problem for us, who are keen walkers).

The owner/manager has lived in the district a long time, knows the city very well, and is willing to give friendly and reliable advice. Cooks an excellent boiled egg. Breakfast a pleasure.

We were upgraded free of charge and our room - at the top under the eaves - was large and well-appointed.

Thoroughly recommendable - a real enhancement to our stay. Should we return, we will definitely choose this hotel.

We ended up with a really spacious suite. Great staff and well located in the center of town, down a small alley (with restaurants etc down it.. a nice alley) and super walkable and close to public transport. Had a great time, just wish we could have stayed longer.

There are only stairs in the building (no elevator) due to the historic nature of the building. and the stairs are steep and narrow in this area of the world, with a slight curvature to the base of the stairs in this building, so just be mindful if you have big clunky suitcases.

Would totally stay again.

Quiet, central hotel

The hotel was very central and quiet and the staff very helpful and friendly. The breakfast was fresh but limited choice. The room was spacious with a comfortable bed but the decor needed refreshing, quite a few scratches on paintwork and the towels a little thin and scratchy.

Location is great and you can walk to most of the downtown attractions, although we don't recommend walking from the train station (20-min walk through cobblestone streets rolling luggage). The hotel was clean and the staff was friendly. The room was quiet facing the courtyard, rather than the street. We didn't try the breakfast because there are lots of cafes around. The stair steps are very narrow and I got nervous going up/down with our suitcases. The A/C wasn't cool enough and the bed wasn't very comfortable.

Great quirky hotel with friendly staff

We received an upexpected upgrade to our booking to a larger room on the top floor of the hotel. This meant negotiating three flights of stairs but it was worth it for the extra room. Lots of nice touches including complimentary water and a small bottle of wine in the fridge. The quirky hotel was just what we wanted and there was a free coffee machine in the reception area where soothing classical music was always playing. The owner was very friendly and explained the building's history. The Matelote is in a great position, close to Het Steen, the Grote Markt and lots of Antwerp's shops, cafes and bars.

We got upgraded to suite room. Very unique , modern, and very spacious. The rooms we had were accessed by a small spiral staircase, which is ok by us but perhaps not ideal for person with mobility issue. Receptionist and Eric were very helpful giving recommendations. Few steps away from the center of Antwerp.
Breakfast was good and unlimited coffee and tea during the day. Very recommend this hotel. Paid parking 4 min walking distance.

Brilliant individual hotel in Antwerp

If you are ok with stairs then this is the place to stay in Antwerp. A quirky old building right in the heart of the city. Eric made us very welcome and gave us great advice about where to visit. The hotel is only a few minutes away from the amazing museum Plantin, which celebrates printing , the early production of books, maps and atlases, the early development of medicine and pharmacy, and as an aside it is full of Ruben's paintings. It is possibly the best museum I have ever visited, unfortunately we only had an hour but we could easily have spent much more time there .

Wonderful little hotel in a quiet street in the city, great room, nice and spacious and super cozy. You can tell they really care about your stay and if you're comfortable, only thing would change is a smoother check-in since we arrived late and there was no one there, although they did allow us to get in awesome breakfast started at eight so we didn't get to enjoy it since we had to leave early.

Sad times during COVID

Unfortunately during the COVID crisis Antwerp felt a bit sad and lonely, most restaurants were closed and the ones open only allowed take-away. Little to no tourists, while this can come as a great opportunity to take amazing pictures with annoying people on the back, the charm of the city was gloomy.
But better days will come!

Nice Hotel, Conveniently located.

This is a nice little hotel on a quiet street in the middle of the old town, and an easy 20 minute walk from the train station. Our room was spacious, with a comfortable bed and a nice soaking tub and separate shower. The staff couldn't have been more accommodating. The only caveat is that there is no elevator. We had the top room at the hotel, so our room was up 3 flights of steps. The staff was more than happy to help with the luggage. We really enjoyed our stay here!

Christmas Market in Antwerp

Very nice boutique hotel in a great central location. Close to the Christmas Markets and great restaurants. Parking available nearby. The room was unique in that the bedroom room and living area was on the second level going up a spiral stairway. Not easy for those that have difficulty with stairs but for us it was very nice to have the two areas separated. Breakfast was simple but good enough for us. Very typical breads, meat, cheeses and boiled eggs. Overall a very enjoyable stay for two nights.

Very well located small boutique hotel right in the centre of the old town. I was upgraded to a very large and comfortable room (room 3) with huge bathroom. However, being an old building I could hear every footstep of people in the room above. A continentAl breakfast was available at an extra charge, but was very basic.

Hotel with great location but...

Hotel matelote is centrally locate din Antwerp and has an impressive look from outside. The people at reception is warm and gentle; therefore the hotel conditions do not correspond to expectations. Breakfast lacks taste and variety (for its price) and not enough tables for the guests - and this happens despite you have to register to breakfast the day before. The room I was assigned was tiny and smelling paint that gave me a headache (and this I could only realize once coming back to sleep). The bathroom location was very odd and without place to hang your belongings. Wardrobe had not enough place for hangers and it was filled with a small refrigerator. To finalize, the access to the room was through a spiral staircase that a medium luggage wouldn't fit (fortunately I was there for one single night and had a small one). To close my comments, the staff was not helpful indicating you the nearest parking place (as the hotel does not have one - and this is not indicated at their site).

This hotel is right in the center of Antwerp. It has a very cool look inside and the beds are very comfortable. The entrance is quite small and you have to ring a bell to the left of the door for the reception to buzz you in. There is no elevator, but overall it was a really good stay and I would recommend it.

convenient hotel in quiet street in centre

Tiny hotel run with minimum staff - so no one around to ask for various needs, like soap when the room cleaner had forgotten to supply it. Need to sign up for breakfast by 6 pm the previous day - somewhat invconvenient. Perfectly functional and clean. Stylish if your taste is for rooms based n Alcatraz or filing cabinet grey - we found it a little depressing to be in our grey grey room.

Great location in old town - the cathedral is a 2 minute walk. Stayed in Superior Suite - room on two levels and an incredible amount of space for the money. Rooms were clean - bed was comfortable and as an added bonus there was a small private roof top deck! Will be staying there on my return!!

Antwerp is delightful. And I don't have much to complain about this hotel. It's modern, affordable, convinenient and located in a desirable area. Easy access from/ to the Central Station. Good bed but pillows need replacing. The lobby is lovely.

The hotel is quiet during the day but can get really noisy at night, depending on the room you get.

I would definitely stay here again when I revisit Antwerp.

A good location and friendly hotel, however we were waiting outside for 5 minutes before being let in, we arrived about 8pm and it's not clear on the door which buzzer to press to get in, a sticker would be very useful! I was in the top room so very spacious and the lady helped me with my luggage as a few flights to climb! There was a leak in the entrance way with a jig on the floor, and breakfast was ok, just the basics. But a great location for sightseeing in the centre.

The Hotel is extremely well located right in the middle of everything - right across from Our Lady Cathedral which is a don't miss destination. It is an historical building so does not have an elevator or direct access from the street. Parking is in a nearby garage but pack light because you have to walk luggage over. Since it is historical, it does not have an elevator. That was a problem for us going up and down very narrow steep steps. Staff will get luggage up the stairs for you and were very accommodating. Rooms were clean and well kept. Updated shower. Refrigerator and safe. We took breakfast locally instead of in the small dining room so can't vouch for that. It was fine but not luxurious for sure.

If you are arriving in afternoon forget about getting close to the hotel with your car and luggage. There is no access due to historic downtown area.

This little hotel has a great location. It was chic and quiet. There's no bustle of guests -- in fact we didn't see any other guests at all. We got an upgrade on our room and had very large room with very high ceilings and fun disco ball in the bathroom. A very discrete, restrained, chic little spot.

Great location but no AC

The hotel has an excellent location, nice lobby and the rooms are modern and clean, however, we had to sleep with the windows open due to there being no air conditioning so we woke up very early from outside noise. The hotel concierge was very nice but wasn't able to answer our questions about taxi rates, popular bars/restaurant, etc, which would have been helpful for us. The maid also came in our room without knocking, and there was no \"do not disturb\" card for us to put on our door. The washroom was large and clean, and the room was very well kept. I would stay there again IF they invested in air conditioning.

Overall very nice; friendly hotel staff; ideal location- close to all \"must see attractions\"; spacious and clean room; taxis cannot get to hotel entrance but it is only approx. 50 yards away; hotel has no elevator and a steep staircase but the staff is helpful in bringing luggage upstairs.

A small 10 room hotel with a friendly, gracious staff. However, somehow we missed the fact that there was no elevator. Our room was at the very top of the hotel and we had to climb 2 very steep flights of steps to get to our room from the entrance. Once we arrived in our room it was comfortable.

Character right within the old quarter

The hotel has an amazing location right in the old quarter - the renovation captures the unique character of the building. The layout of the room made good use of the space and had great windows overlooking the centre courtyard. The hotel did not have air-conditioning but the windows did allow in a cool breeze but limited privacy. The late check-in was not well co-ordinated but they did follow-up and otherwise customer service was excellent!

i will definitely stay here again the next time i'm in antwerp. i felt like the staff were each individual owners...and each treated me as if i was their friend visiting. free wifi, nice buffet breakfast, clean modern room, nice common area, indoor and outdoor, close to attractions, especially the cathedral. i highly recommend this boutique hotel. loved it here!!!!

This is a hip boutique hotel right in the middle of everything you'll want to see and experience in Antwerp. Hotel staff were very helpful and friendly, and the bed was the most comfortable we slept in for our 3-city tour of Belgium! Would definitely stay here again.

Great central hotel in Antwerp

The hotel was really lovely, the staff were super friendly and helpful. We were given a 'small upgrade' for no other reason than they had a bigger room to spare and thought we might like it! How good is that? The room was spacious and the bed was very comfy. The hotel is in a great location, five minutes walk just around the corner from the Christmas Market and old town square. Wi-Fi was free. We had breakfast before leaving which was very good, and well priced.
My husband and I only stayed for one night as we were returning to Rotterdam ferry port from Germany. Antwerp itself and the very lovely Christmas market came as a really pleasant surprise, so the great hotel was an added bonus. We intend to go back to Antwerp for a longer stay this December, and will definitely be booking this hotel again. Really highly recommended.

We had a fantastic time in Antwerp and at this hotel. The staff were extremely helpful and the room was bright and modern. We particularly loved the big double shower! The hotel is right in the heart of everything, so it was a quick walk to bars/restaurants, shopping and other sights. We particularly loved the staff reco of the Applemans restaurant. Fantastic. I would definitely stay at the Matelote again.

Loved this charming boutique hotel, in a pleasant and convenient area of Antwerp. The only thing which could have improved it would be more variety of breakfast. Chocolate-coated coffee beans on reception were a nice touch! It doesn't have a 24h reception, but you probably can't really expect that in a small hotel like this.

This is a Michelin recommended accommadation with A Michelin recommended restaurant next to it. I wish I stayed longer in Antwerpen.
Ask for room #5, if you don't mind walk up, its a huge room with big modern bathroom. very bright.

Great Location

Great location in Antwerp near the historic center, and amazingly quiet inside, so a good night's sleep is guaranteed. Hotel staff was friendly and handled all of our many requests expeditiously. Very nice buffet breakfast. Only issue was some deferred maintenance and the lack of a rug on the floor or any color in our large room. A little time and money upgrading the cosmetics would go a long way here.

Loved the hotel and the great location but the old building did not insulate very well and you could hear hard soled shoes upstairs and people coming out of pubs late at night on the street. Lovely hotel in an excellent location - highly recommended

We booked a Deluxe Cosy room, but were upgraded to a Junior Suite at no extra cost - a real treat. The room was very large, quiet and comfortable with huge windows/patio doors looking out over the Antwerp rooftops and the Cathedral to the side. The large bathroom with free-standing bath was also very luxurious! We loved the hotel's style of having a very modern interior, within a very old and beautiful building.

The hotel is located in a quiet side-street only a minute's walk from the Grote Markt - a perfect location to explore the city.

There is no lift and because it's such an old building the stairs are quite steep, but don't let that put you off... we were offered help with our luggage and even on the top floor, it really was not that difficult.

If we return to Antwerp we would definitely book the Matelote again... Thanks to the hotel staff for an excellent weekend.

Beware of the mosquitos

The service was really good and location was good too. Very handy to the square.
However, the hotel room was a bit damp and there are so many mosquitos! The cleaner forgot to turn on the repellent so we got bitten all night.... so if you are going there, please take the insect repellent!

Purtroppo per motivi di problemi della struttura la prenotazione mi è stata annullata. Il proprietario però mi ha prontamente risarcito. L’ hotel è molto contrale e comunque in una via tranquilla.

Het hotel is zeer goed gelegen, met gemakkelijke toegang tot het openbaar vervoer en diverse toeristische bezienswaardigheden.
Het personeel is erg vriendelijk en laat je je meteen welkom voelen. ( Big shout-out to Maarten ). 😎
De kamers zijn zeer schoon en het bed waarin we sliepen was uiterst comfortabel.
Ik ben blij dat we dit hotel hebben gevonden, want we komen regelmatig terug naar Antwerpen.

Het hotel voor de tweede keer geboekt gehad, kamer is groot en heerlijk stil, het hotel is erg centraal gelegen bij de Grote Markt & Groen plaats. Super handige bagage opslag, niets te klagen.
