While having no power is out of anyone’s control, failing to notify me that the property had been out of power for several days until the day of check in, after I had already traveled to Carmel, is unacceptable. I spent another three hours driving home in the pouring rain and over an hour on the phone with hotels.com to get a refund. This could have been avoided with better communication.

Amazing room/service, hotel is OLD = noisy!

I stayed in anamaizngqueen room with a beautiful bath tub. I read reviews about this hotel being loud, but I was not prepared to be woken up at 5:30 with constant noise from the stairs and doors opening and closing. I was on the ground/countyard ... maybe a higher room would be quieter. Also, no AC. I also had to wait about 10 minutes to be served by the bartender for a glass of wine - after seeking out someone to help me. All that being said, I would stay again.

Lovely location and sweet courtyard. Room was clean and comfortable though there was a leaking tub faucet. I was extremely disappointed with the level of noise that woke me up on vacation at 7:30am (or so)....lawn mowing or blowing, garbage pickup, etc. Is there no town noise ordinance near a luxury hotel?

Everything was spectacular. From the little gold key, to the complimentary valet parking, to the nespresso machine and sparkling water in the room, to the heated bathroom floor tiles, to the fluffy cloud bed, to the little windows that open letting the sea scented air inside, to the generous toiletries that left my hair soft AND clean feeling, to the room service and the little blue phone to call for anything you need, to the perfectly portioned daily breakfast so you leave neither famished or uncomfortably stuffed including a wellness shot and unique options such as chia seed pudding and mushroom toast (*which may not sound appealing, but trust me, try it.) To the gorgeous setting right in the thick of things. It was everything I hoped for and more.... the service and staff was five star.*****

This hotel is just lovely. Unfortunately, the walls, at least in the 2 story bungalow we were in, seemed very thin, and the people upstairs walking around, walking up the stairs (not even loudly, but you could hear every step echoing into our room, and listening to their TV kept us up until 1 am, and then we couldn't sleep until 3. I'm not usually going to complain about sound issues, but for a hotel of this caliber, it's not acceptable that I could literally hear what the TV actors were saying. For hours. So although the hotel itself is a dream, sleeping there, for us, was a nightmare, and we can't recommend it to others based on our experience.

There was a long narrow flight of stairs to my nicely furnished room.
My complaint is with the vanity area of the bathroom. It made it very difficult to get ready. A 5 star hotel with the cheapest hairdryer they could find? It was a $12.99 Conair (I checked Conair’s website). Besides that, it was hard to put makeup on as the lighting was dim and you couldn’t get close to the mirror. I’d suggest putting up a magnified, lighted swing arm mirror and invest in a better quality hairdryer.

The hotel was wonderful. Service was exceptional, the breakfast in the courtyard was really special. The rooms were very comfortable with robes, slippers and nespresso machine. The location is in the heart of carmel and short distance to the beach. It was ideal being there We stayed up in October and it was in the mid 60s to 70 so at night we left our windows open however there is no air conditioning so we would not have enjoyed our stay in the mid summer. Be cautious of that.

Very overpriced. Blonde European at the front desk who checked us in was so unwelcoming and defensive- an angry person should not work at the front desk when you are paying $600+ per night. Rooms have amazing bathrooms, but the slick Waterworks fixtures and Matouk bath towels didn’t make up for the cramped room, stained carpet and short stairs that you can barely/safely walk down. Rest of staff was super friendly and helpful. Hotel should seriously put someone else at that front desk if they want guests to feel welcomed without a nasty attitude.

One of the nicest Inns we’ve stayed at. Our room was spacious with a king size bed, two comfortable chairs, a huge bathroom with a soaking tub and walk-in shower. The extra amenities were wonderful including a Nespresso coffee pot, turndown service and homemade snacks. The included breakfast was delicious.

Very attentive to needs, except I kept trying to reach the staff prior to our arrival and I could never reach anyone. I wasn’t happy that we couldn’t peruse a dinner menu when we arrived and wanted to make plans for the evening. A nice gift was presented for our special occasion. We thought 4 pm check-in very late. For the cost of the room, I didn’t think they should have had add-on-cost items to the breskfast.But we did enjoy the option to have breakfast delivered to our room. A nice experience for one time but we would not elect to stay there again.

A gem in Carmel-by-the-Sea

The hotel is located at the heart of Camel-by-the-Sea where you can enjoy walks around the town and access to various restaurants and shops. All the staff at the hotel are nice and courteous. The room was nice, cozy, and warm at night as well. It was great that they were able to park my car at a gratuity/fee which is expected in the busy town. All good.

The staff was incredibly service oriented. We were able to check in early with no problem. The concierge drove us to dinner and picked the group up afterwards; very helpful as it was a rainy night. My wife and I stayed for the weekend and brought our dog. It is pet friendly with a $250 fee per pet and a 20 lb limit. The property is beautiful and the service is excellent. They had bowls and a dog bed in our room for our dog which was a nice touch. The complementary breakfast is excellent as well. Overall, a fantastic place to stay!

The staff was very nice. And we enjoyed the included breakfast. But the facility is so limited, and the price so high, that I would never come back nor recommend. Small room. Noise from the street (including a 6am delivery truck), plus the restaurant and courtyard -- since there's no A/C you need to keep windows open. Valets just park your car in the neighborhood; sometimes they fetched it, another time we were handed keys and given directions. Unbelievably, I tried to watch something on HBO, and it wasn't available! Roadside motels give you HBO, but not the L'Auberge Carmel! Way too expensive for what you get.

This L'Auberge is small and a bit dated. There was a fan noise all night that almost sounded like a generator. No air conditioning and the windows only open a small amount due to being on the street, at least our room. Breakfast is good, simple and served in the courtyard that is strangely decorated with old animal (elephant and other) statues and an outdoor sunshade that is tied to them. We will choose a different hotel next time.

L'Auberge Carmel disappointing

We expected more from this Relais & Chateau property. It seems very overpriced for the quality of the rooms. The room was VERY warm, stuffy. The bellman brought out a fan from the closet as well as a 2nd fan. The opened windows did not get any cross-breeze and brought in the noise from the garbage/storage area on the side as well as the common courtyard where guests can gather to lounge or have breakfast. We were informed that there is no A/C here because it is an historic hotel, yet there was a split-mini air conditioning unit in the restaurant. Nowhere (on their website or hotels.com) do the room descriptions mention that there is no A/C. We ran the two fans the whole stay in late August. If your room faces the courtyard, you will hear chatter, service help radios and doors opening as well as some music from the restaurant. Room 17 had a hardwood floor, no area rug. There were not any other mirrors in the room, not even by the closet for dressing, only in the bath. The staff did not have a portable stand mirror for the desk. The upholstered chairs need to have their stuffing/foam replaced. The bed mattress was somewhat uncomfortable. The wall outlets were worn and falling out as our plugs would not stay in. Staff tried to fix it by putting a large multiplug on it, but that kept falling out, too. Staff was friendly, polite and helpful. The morning breakfast arrived as ordered or you could choose to have it served in the courtyard. Cleanliness & location was great!

no parking - weird staff - poor tv - good wine - small breakfast but tasty - hotel is extremely overrated - just because a room has a Nespresso machine does not make it a good room - room was too small compared to its huge 4-post bed canopy, much like Al Bundy's large clients who insisted on wearing small-sized shoes (reference to Married With Children show). Just because you put it there does not mean it fits, and therefore it looks obnoxious. Not worth the stay.

The staff are excellent. The location of the hotel is perfect. The restaurant at the hotel (one Michelin Star) is truly outstanding. Food, Service and Atmosphere. However, we were in Room 9. To be avoided at all costs. The room itself was beautiful. But it sits above the restaurant…and sits below another room….and sits on the front of the hotel. Quiet it is not.

It’s a fairly nice property but we would stay elsewhere next time. Small rooms and steep stairs are quaint but hard on 70 year olds. Our key was tricky and the valet parking is off property. The included breakfast was lovely!
We were surprised to have an additional $35 per day added for gratuity and still expected to tip.

It was a great stay overall. All of the staff was extremely courteous and helpful and the room was great. We felt one front desk staff ( Saturday evening lady, who we dropped off the breakfast selection) could have been a little more courteous when we asked for possible changes to it and pickup availability from our dinner restaurant by car, nothing offensive just her style of dealing was a little off. We have been to other relais and chateaux hotels and have been wowed with every aspect ( just came back from the Awasi Atacama in Chile and every detail was perfect) so this was a little surprising.

What a treat! We received a very hospitable and personalized greeting. This boutique hotel is a class act, delivered with warmth and sincerity. The room we reserved was considered standard, but it was still special. Nice, bright light, beautiful decor, and the bed was very comfortable with crisp cotton sheets. The room had pre-bottled, sparkling and still water, savory snacks, and special homemade caramel candies- all included with our stay. Cookies were delivered to our room during turn down service. We were celebrating my birthday, and they brought us a complimentary bottle of chilled champagne after check in. So lovely. It was storming the next morning, and a full breakfast was delivered to our room. It was excellent! Very thoughtful personalized touches throughout our stay. We will definitely be back. The Auberge is located right in the center of Carmel, and our room was large and clean, though a rug in the middle of the large central area would have made it feel more homey. The bed was exceptionally comfortable.

For a place with a Michelin star, breakfast was merely OK. You have to pay extra if you want bacon or anything beyond 2 eggs and toast. The first day, the kitchen only sent 1 order of eggs for the two of us, but they were quick to respond to our request for more.

We were disappointed that staying at the hotel did not mean we could get a reservation for dinner at the Michelin-starred restaurant.

The hotel has essentially zero amenities on site. No lounge to speak of (there was a tiny little bar), no public spaces except the open atrium in the center.

Although the room was big, clean and comfy, I doubt we'll stay at Auberge again. La Playa has much better public spaces, a great bar, views over the sea, etc.
