Cracking Anniversary treat

As always a delightful stay. So welcoming and friendly - and the braw lounges and lovely gardens - mean the buildings and surrounds are as good as the staff.
Only issue was the plug hole in our bath wasn't very secure and the bath water disappeared - just when I wanted a jacuzzi in the bath!!!

Of the 8 hotels we visited on our Scotland trip, Roman Camp was our least favorite. While the building is historical and charming, we did not feel particularly welcome and the 3 rooms we booked were not up to expectations. The decor was rather a jumble of styles and pieces that might pass for a period look if one did not look too closely. The linens on bed were rough and so were the towels in the bathroom. I think there are plenty of other hotels that would provide a better experience.

This was a very poorly maintained property for which we have been charged an exorbitant price. The room was very dated and shabby, unclean and dirty. the tap came off in my hand when pouring a bath. The pillows were lumpy and the bed uncomfortable. The floorboards creek very loudly which makes for a noisy nighttime as you can hear other people moving around. There was also loud music coming from somewhere in the hotel which started at 4 am and lasted until around 8 am - we're not sure where it was coming from, perhaps the bar downstairs which was closed at the time - it sounded like elevator music on a loop - awful. We had little sleep and were very happy to leave. We paid almost £300 for one night here and it was most certainly not worth it. Would avoid it in future and highly recommend anyone reading this review does the same. The staff are very pleasant though and completely understand that the property has been seriously neglected which is unfortunate for them as they have to deal with the customer complaints. Amanda in the Bothy restaurant was particularly lovely and the food and service there were great. Breakfast was fine too. We had booked a superior room - I dread to think what a standard room would be like.

Wonderful Weekend

We had an excellènt overnight stay, everything was very clean and comfortable. Staff were lovely, very helpful, friendly and polite. Breakfast was very good. We couldn't eat in the restaurant as chef was away but the Potting
Shed Bistro a very short walk within the grounds the food was excellent surpassed our expectation.

We booked a small en-suite double room but there was a problem with a leak in the the en-suite which the hotel could not resolve quickly. Therefore they moved us to a suite and gave us an apology for the inconvenience of having to move rooms. Excellent resolution for us!

Beautiful but some issues...

Roman Kamp is a lovely property with lots of walking paths. It has lovely rooms that are great for family gatherings. The breakfast was good. Our room, which was one of their smaller rooms, though did have a problem with the shower. I tried to take a shower in the small shower. The temperature ranged from hot to scalding hot. We notified the management, but he said there was no one to look at it that day, he would come down when he could. I ended up having to take a sponge bath at the sink. After a day of international travel, not being able to take a shower was unacceptable. I had to meet with family with grungy hair. When we returned to our room, there was evidence that a repair had been attempted as there were wet towels and dirt that had been left in our shower. However, the shower was not fixed. The management did make it up to us by switching our room to a suite which had a bath and a shower. Outside the room was a picture of the Beatles, and their autographs saying they had stayed at the hotel in 1964. I would not have seen this if my room had not been switched. The suite although large seemed like it had a bunch of mismatched old furniture in it. Made me feel like I was staying in someone's attic or basement. I would stay here again, as the property as a whole is very beautiful.

One night stay

We had a lovely welcome and were shown around the hotel. We were booked into have the set menu in the hotel. The public rooms were fantastic with roaring fires.
The meal was lovely served again with a big roaring fire and friendly staff, who were very attentive.
My only complaint would be the bedrooms were a little tired and towels were not anywhere near what you would expect in a 4 star hotel, neither were the duvets. Having said that the beds and linen enabled a comfortable night and the shower was great. We didnt test the jacuzi in the bath out! Next time maybe.

After a whole day driving, we wanted first to go to our rooms. Reception staff made me back to parking just to get confirmation from my family before check in if we wanted to book £65/person dinner right there. Errogant and no explanation. When we decided to walk around the town first, the staff turned apparently unhappy and chose NOT to show us our rooms (the only hotel reception not doing so in our 10 days UK trip). Super unfriendly and completely unacceptable!

The stairs are narrow and rooms are uncomfortable. Door is so small that I knocked my head twice. Windows couldn't stay open. Toilet not flushing. Couldn't find electric outlet. The windows are appeared to be unclean and poorly maintained.

Worst stay in our 10 day trip in UK. A place can be historical and charming if friendly, clean, functional, and well maintained. Unfortunately, Roman Camp Country House Hotel was none of those during our stay. Avoid if you can.

A very odd experience…

Hotel- Not a 4 star. Dusty, dingy and dirty. Communal rooms were grand to look at and held a lot of history. Nice grounds.

Room- Attic room- comfy bed, dusty and dirty carpets. Terrible shower and uncomfortable stay. 2* at most.

Breakfast- Unorganised and unclear. People repeatedly asked to move to tables suitable for waiters. Would be easier if you actually greeted guests and allocated them a seat. One couple behind us were very unhappy as it made no sense! Just move the milk and butter. Terrible, cheap bread. Odd experience.

Dinner- Potting shed is nice. Food was good although allergic reaction to mushroom Risotto as felt unwell for a few hours after eating.

Overall- Odd experience. The place doesn’t know if it wants to be posh or casual, affordable or expensive. It’s pretentious at best. Grounds are nice and it’s situated in a nice position. For the price there are far better places available. I would not stay again and I would not recommend to anyone.

The potential on this building and grounds is fantastic but needs heavy investment to get it up to scratch! Ripped carpets, dirty cobwebs and lamps is not luxury. It is lazy. Invest in some decent upkeep of the building and you’ll be sitting on a gold mine! I would recommend Hotels.com visit some of the places they advertise to check quality and standards.

Shabby chic or just shabby

Stayed here on honeymoon 34 years ago. Not much changed since then. Curtains, bedding and soft furniture all faded and torn. Spa bath broken, cracked tiles in bathroom, windows dirty and pain peeling. Shame as hotel is in a lovely location. Gardens quite well kept and enjoyed walking down by river.

This was an absolutely stunning castle-like hotel in a beautiful location. The staff (particularly Christopher and Barnaby) were kind, approachable, mannered and really looked after us. The inside of the hotel was full of character with lots of interesting and cosy rooms and corners to have a drink in. The grounds were fabulous with a beautiful garden, a herb garden and even a peacock! We tried the gourmet tasting menu at the restaurant which was beautiful. Everything felt personalised and the staff worked hard and really went above and beyond so that we have the best experience during our stay. The hot freshly cooked breakfast is very good and we particularly enjoyed the grilled kipper and the service by Barnaby.

P.S Barbary made the best hot toddy we had during our trip in the highlands!

We wish we were staying longer!

A brilliant stay when my husband and I were on a business trip to Scotland. We met the family and had a super meal at the Potting Shed.

Only slight niggle was guests need to know on arrival where their dogs are allowed to go. The conservatory has no open fire and is less welcoming than the Library or the Sitting room.

Paid for an experience--and got it!

We hoped the experience would be worth the price. It was, but probably would not splurge again. Food and its service was sophisticated and excellent. Our suite upgrade was large and comfortable. Garden and grounds, which fronted a river, were lovely, extensive and fun to explore. It was once a grand place, but time has past and slightly faded, but charming, glory is now its major characteristic.

Staff were great. Very quirky hotel. We slept through breakfast and they rang us and allowed us to come down for breakfast even though the kitchen should of been closed.

The outside cafe area was a little bit of a let down. Seemed very unorganised and only one person working there.. it was quiet but he seemed to be running at 100 miles an hour when he didn’t need to be. Made me and my partner a little uncomfortable but it could of been worse.

Excellent little hotel , set in its own grounds with a picturesque stretch of river , reception , bar and lounge, lovely olde worlde atmosphere from a bygone era, we took the choice of the taster menu for dinner , food was excellent , as was breakfast, only criticism was the maitre d , who deterred from the overall relaxed atmosphere of the hotel , verging on the Basil Fawlty at times , this type of table service adds nothing to the ambiance of the hotel , leave it to the polite and very capable young service staff please.

My wife and I had our wedding here and so on our 10 years anniversary I surprised her and booked an over night stay here. It was strange as the seasonal conditions and the weather were almost exactly the same and so the memories came flooding back.
The food is to die for and second to none as it was back then and will go along way helping to decide where to celebrate our 20 years wedding anniversary when the time come.

Lovely hotel and great location not he river in Callander. Service was a little slow, hard to get hold of a member of staff at times. Also, the bistro was reluctant to serve me dinner and eventually allocated me a table that was almost in the bar!! The food was lovely though to be fair.

Charming hotel with lots of character

My wife and I had a very nice stay here for our wedding anniversary in December 2018. The hotel certainly has a lot of character. The building dates from 1625 and it really does feel like you're entering some kind of time warp. Even just the entryway is quite an experience, what with the ancient wooden door and the huge fireplace in the lobby. Although the decor is pretty sumptuous, it's also very dated and not always in the best condition. A lot of the public areas look like they haven't been remodeled since the 1920s or 30s. I would say that it's a great choice if you're looking for somewhere that's cozy and has plenty of character and excellent service, but it's probably not going to be competitive with the very high-end luxury hotels in other rural parts of Scotland. However the food was excellent, and in that regard I would say that it's on par with the very finest hotels. Overall, if you're looking for a fine-dining experience and a cozy stay in a place with plenty of character, and you like places with quirky old-world charm, then I would certainly recommend it.

My Husband and I have been lucky to have dined and stayed here a few times , and are never disappointed,
It's without doubt our favourite hotel and quite magical.
It's a must any time but especially at Christmas.
Food fabulous, including the wonderful afternoon teas.

The online pictures are deceiving. The hotel is more run-down and shabby than expected. Our room was cramped and felt damp. The exterior is crumbling in places and needs some TLC. In hindsight I would have preferred to find a VRBO or AirBNB in the area.

My husband and I enjoyed our overnight stay at the hotel. The hotel is charming and very quaint with lovely decor. The staff were friendly and very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We had a bite to eat in the Potting Shed which is cheaper than the hotel and the food was delicious, very cozy setting and a nice atmosphere. The breakfast was fantastic too, probably the best we have had at any hotel we’ve stayed.
We would definitely stay again next time we manage another night away with no kids!
