The staff in the Highland Gate restaurant were brilliant, very polite and efficient. It was quite busy even on a Tuesday late afternoon and they still did their job well even though there was only 2 of them front of house.
The Marston Inn room adjacent to the Highland Gate was okay for our one night stay and for the value of what we paid. The rooms could be doing with a spruce up, the skirting board for example wasn't the cleanest. The bathroom panel etc was a bit scruffy and not sure who does your maintenance but a standard round shaped toilet seat has been fitted to a square pan!! Not very comfortable and not nice to look at. The toilet hadn't been cleaned properly inside the bowl which was a bit off putting as it made me think the rest wouldn't have been cleaned correctly.
Otherwise everything else was fine for our one night stay passing through, the bed was comfy and clean.

My family and I enjoyed our one night stay and the staff were friendly and welcoming. The rooms were fine and having the pub on the same site was useful as we had had a long drive up.
Our only criticism was that at breakfast in the pub , my daughter was charged £1.50 for two mushrooms as an extra on her beans on toast- when queried, we were told it was 75p per mushroom. We had not been told this at the time of ordering and felt we should have been made aware of this as it would have been cheaper for her to have the full breakfast instead.

Our actual room was across the parking lot, in another building. The bar and restaurant offered great food, beverages and good service. This is a great hotel with a ample amount of hot and cold breakfast items, but the actual quest room was minimal, e.g., the twin beds were very small by US standards, no extra amenities, just the basics.

There was a microwave in a kitchen, but we were denied being able to use this. Disappointing, its there, theres no harm in being able to access this. If you need to heat baby bottles, they might make an exception? We were directed to go to the petrol station accross the rd.
Check in was easy, but firm on time. We arrived at approx. 245-250pm-ish but advised check-in is at 3pm. I later saw that you can pay for an early check-in, which explains the firm set time.
No lifts in the accommodation building, so you will need to carry your bags upstairs. Ensure you communicate if you have accessibility issues when booking.

Check in was easy, but firm on time. We arrived at approx. 245-250pm-ish but advised check-in is at 3pm. I later saw that you can pay for an early check-in, which explains the firm set time.
No lifts in the accommodation building, so you will need to carry your bags upstairs. Ensure you communicate if you have accessibility issues when booking.

We had multiple issues with the toilet, it was suggested it was because we were not from the UK, but we have both traveled out of the county and have not had issue with the toilets. The bathroom in general was in need of some repair, towel bar broken, toilet seat ill fitting. We were booked into an accessible room and we did not need it, the bathroom is basically a wet room, which was a challenge. We asked for a different room but there wasn’t one available. We attempted to contact the front desk by phone several times, there was no answer. When we went to the front desk, we were given prompt service, which was appreciated. It’s okay for a quick stay.
