The room is ok, basic with a frig and microwave I just used it for sleeping, showering and changing clothes. It is right downtown that is convenient. Also you can hop right onto the interstate.

Staff were very helpful, room was tired but about what you’d expect for the price. Main issue is the location, it’s sandwiched between the freeway and the off-ramp, and with zero soundproofing traffic noise was constant and surprisingly clear.

The one star is for the “front desk lady” she was lovely, great personality, and helpful.

The lodge is nothing like the advertising. This location is very loud, quite dingy and dirty. The room was a “nonsmoking room” that reeked of marijuana and smoke. Including the squeaking and terrible bedding. !! Overall I don’t recommend this Lodge.

Th deadbolt on the door was broken off like the room had been broken into, there was no seal on the door, and no seal on the window that backed up to a homeless encampment. I did not feel safe at all and when brought it to the front desks attention they refused to give me a refund because they “didn’t know how”.

To start off the parking lot is really confusing to get to and if you make a wrong turn you are back on the freeway. I had to go back to get my keys remade and then only 1 worked. The lobby was locked when I checked in at the window at 11pm while I waited for the staff to check me in a homeless man stood next to me trying to find out if I was traveling alone, he then followed me to my car until I got in and locked the doors. The sheets were dirty and the overall quality of the room were not good. Then during the night we could hear people yelling outside the door well after midnight. When I looked around in the light of day there was a big homeless camp right across the street. I did not feel safe and even thought I had 1 more night prepaid, I left for another hotel.

Property was very clean though shabby/aged. It is walkable to Balboa Park and Gaslight area. Close to City College tram station. Not many dining/eating places around but a McD's (in an emergency) about 500m up the road. There was a microwave but no plates or cutlery. Staff friendly.

Went for a couple days with my son. Property definitely DOES NOT look like the pictures on the website. Room was decent, toilet was very wobbly. Not to mention parking if first come first serve, if you don't get in early you have to pay for parking near by. Across the street in an empty lot homeless people have tents set-up, doesn't feel safe at all.

Better than anticipated, beating low expectations

This is typical lodge in a big city center. Close to MTS, but the walk may be on the dangerous side as there were/are a lot of individuals temporarily experience homelessness on the streets. However, the property appeared to be safe, secure and clean. The front office personnel was friendly and available. Security was on par. Room was relatively clean and habitable. First night was a bit noisy from the neighbors having a party. However, overall no complains for the class of the lodging property this is.

Don’t believe the pictures. This place is soooo run down. The guy working the front desk is nice, but there is an overwhelming smell in the office. Then the room was bad. Light shade falling apart. Multiple issue with the check-in process, hotel conditions and everything that was advertised did not match up with what we check-in to. I feel extremely uncomfortable with this stay but I cannot cancel the stay without a refund. So i am force to stay. Front desk absolutely was not understanding even though they saw how uncomfortable i am to stay here. Expedia was limited with what they can do to help me. I might as well be sleeping in my car tonight instead.

This place deserves ZERO STARS. Not only is it a dump that smells like someone farted in a trash bag and lit it on fire. It doesn’t offer room service or have vending or ice machines. When I confronted the office about it he told me go walk to the gas station and buy ice. Okay that’s fine I’ll do that. They only sell 10lb bags of ice! As a worker he should have known that why are you sending guest to go buy a 10 pound bag of ice when we don’t have a freezer ! Parking is limited but I managed to get a spot that they said was secure. He said we have a camera monitoring it. However after I had to walk to McDonald’s to find ice I came back and two people were literally smoking from a crack pipe in the parking lot and he said it’s okay they only smoke they don’t mess with the cars. When I went to check out a day early because nothing was as advertised when I booked he said sorry non refundable. I was willing to pay for the one day we slept in the horrid place. But he ended up yelling at me calling me a bi tch for asking for a refund and then called me more names and told me to f-off off. I disputed the whole stay and got my money back.

Our flight was abruptly cancelled at 11:30 pm that night so we had very few choices for hotels to stay at that weren’t outrageously expensive and the hotel we’d booked for our other days stay was full for the night.

When we arrived to this hotel, the check-in area wreaked of isopropyl alcohol, the smell was harshly offensive.

We finally get to our assigned room and the toilet is dirty and had clearly not been cleaned making us question the sanitation of the rest of the room. The curtains had brown stains on them and the lamp shades were torn. There were also ants in the bathtub. We presented our concerns with the staff and they gave us another room, but it wasn’t much better. The hand towels were blood stained, and many other signs of the place being generally unkept.

DO NOT STAY AT THIS PROPERTY. I am not someone who usually writes reviews, however my stay here was not enjoyable. The room was dirty with spiders, holes in the wall and furniture and dirt covered floors. The location is unsafe and nearby the freeway so there is constant road noise. The room looked nothing like the advertised pictures. Sheets had holes in them and there was only one light fleece blanket on the bed. Towels were thin, stained and slightly bigger than a hand towel in size. Everything was damaged and dirty from the shower curtain, towel racks, furniture, walls and doors. Parking was limited and difficult to access. Staff were unresponsive when Expedia reached out to address these concerns. You would be better off to stay just about anywhere other than this hotel.

The front picture of the property is very misleading. This picture is not close to where this hotel is, or near Little Italy. Pros: Our room was pretty big but the tv was too small. Lobby guy was super nice.
Cons: There is very limited parking spaces, which we ended up having to pay next door which sucked. The floors in the room were really dirty.

I rarely leave negative reviews, but my experience at the Downtown San Diego Lodge was disappointing on multiple levels. The room felt extremely outdated and not well maintained — stained carpet, peeling paint, and a musty odor that hit as soon as we walked in. The bed was uncomfortable, and the sheets didn’t feel very clean.

Noise was another major issue. Being downtown, I expected some city noise, but this was next-level — loud traffic, people yelling outside all night, and paper-thin walls that offered zero sound insulation.

The biggest red flag was the general feeling of lack of security. The parking lot was sketchy, and there didn’t seem to be any real staff presence after hours. I didn’t feel comfortable leaving my belongings in the room.

Location is about the only decent thing — you can walk to a lot of nearby restaurants and bars — but for the price, there are definitely better and safer options in San Diego.

Definitely wouldn’t stay here again.

Be aware of Double Parking

The hotel is situated right at the exit and entrance to the freeways which is challenging for ingress and egress and can get loud (traffic) an lots of homeless people in the area as well.

Location is a good walk for getting to Little Italy and the Pier.

The room was exactly what you need to get a good rest and sleep. Nothing fancy, very unfussy lodgings. This place minor updates,nothing impressive,what i call a lipstick update. Good clean, bathroom, bedroom, and bedding.

Beware! This property does not have an ice machine nor vending machine on site. The front desk suggested I walk across to the gas station a block away to get what I needed. I was unaware of this before I booked. Also no coffee machines in the room. Urgh!!!

Lastly, the parking lot is small and in an effort to accommodate all guests vehicles cars were double parked bumper to bumper. Urgh! I was not able to back out and leave at my convenience. I had to go to the front office, report the car number that I was blocked in by, and let the front desk know that I needed to exit. Then I had to wait for front desk to contact the car owner as well as wait for car owner to come move their car. This took about an extra 30+ minutes from the time I walked down to my car with luggage to leave.

Very inconvenient for lodging we will stay away from this lodge. Not priced right.

Do not book here! These photos are so out of date. It looks nothing like the pictures. The room was absolutely disgusting and we couldn’t even get a refund to go somewhere else. There was hair everywhere, the floors were sticky and it’s so run down. There were holes in our sheets and blankets. When asked to get fresh sheets and towels, the said “well housekeeping left so I can’t do anything”. Ruined our weekend getaway. We felt so gross even after showering in the morning. This place will be getting reported to the health department. Not to mention the blood stain we found on the curtains. I think we would’ve been better off sleeping at the homeless encampment next door.

The location and parking not the best.
Its appearance is questionable.
The hotel room we stayed at was dirty, black mold in the shower.
Water damage. There was tape over the smoke detector. The curtains and window was super dirty. Burnt holes in the blankets and questionable markings in the walls. The latch to lock for extra security was broken.
But what was worse of all was the people above us were making so much noise as if they kept pacing back and forth all night from 10pm till we left the room at 6am! The only thing positive was the lady at the front desk. She was very welcoming and sweet.

Room smelly toweks used too old and thin, not clean. Deposit supposed to be on hold and pending by other hotels then can cancle the transaction so you dont need to pay a few, but this hotel first charged your credit card first then refund so you have to lost the two times covertion rate charged by the bank. The area is not walk in distance to good location

It was okay. Would I stay there again? Absolutely not. My friend wanted it cold and there were no extra blankets so I froze and got no sleep. There was a bump in my bed and stains. There are long term tenants and the area is sketchy! Heard fights next door to us every night. The parking is atrocious. Had to wake someone up at 6:30am to move their car. Literally drug deals everywhere and one of the long term tenants was scoping out the parked cars!!

Photos online are deceiving. This is a family owned business but they seemed like they didn't care. Parking is limited, first come first serve and only a few spots available, had to park in the next lot and pay. The room had a weird smell to it when we arrived, and it looks like everything was \"landlord renovated\". The water pressure was extremely low and the towels did not seem clean. Location wise it wasn't in that great of a neighborhood but it was walkable to the areas we needed to go. We stayed 1 night for new years eve and regretted it because once we got back after midnight, not only did our key card not work, all the other rooms in the establishment didn't work either so all guests were lined up outside the office to get our keycards redone. They said it's because \"our program resets every year on new years\". After the front lady redid our keys once, it still wasn't working and my partner had to go down 3 times until they gave us the master key to get it. Definitely did not feel safe and would never stay here again. Reviews are all bad, please listen to them and do not stay here.
