The staff were lovely, and the breakfast was excellent for the price. The girl at the bar went the extra mile to prepare a delicious gluten-free breakfast for me, which I really appreciated. The family room was clean and very spacious. Overall, it was exactly what it promised and very good value for money. The location was great too.

Positives the staff were very friendly and helpful.
The hotel and rooms are dated and not very comfortable. For the price I expected and could put up with that but there was no hot water. Even in a cheap hotel I expect to be able to have a shower!

room was clean . Bathroom, bath and basin very clean.
Towel rail missing from wall. The basin tap hot and cold indicators are worn off and should be replaced with new ones costing a few pence.
Wood chip wallpaper not very attractive but probably hides poor plasterwork.
The mat/carpet at the entrance to the bar/dining area is GRIM. This should be replaced as soon as possible as it does not give a good impression of cleanliness.
It is a popular pub and restaurant and I had a good overall stay.

Towels were good but hand towel had a hole in it. Staff were friendly. If you want to travel back in time to a shabby, doleful BnB but pay extra then stay here. Don’t stay in Winter, the window doesn’t close (or open for that matter). I expected more for the price.

The location is good for Bristol, the hotel room was at the top of the building, very poor ventilation and although a fan was supplied, the room was very hot. Hotel room was very basic. We didn’t have the breakfast ,coffee was just a pot of filter coffee. The room seemed quite shabby, although was clean and the mattress comfortable.

Arrived and waited arou d 10-15 minutes for check in member of staff was looking to see where the lady was & unable to locate her. Was advised we were on the top floor....attic room was average size, very warm window opened slighly, view (brick wall) not great. Fan too small for room, tea/coffee etc supplied no option for cows milk or alternative. Shower was nice, water pressure was good. Was located right by the door on top floor so heard the door open everytime & people walking pass. Had food in restaurant was warm not hot.

This was a great location for us. It is only a 10 minute walk to the heart of downtown Bristol. We booked the family room. It offered plenty of space for my daughter and me. Around the corner is a GREAT sandwich shop called Sandwich Sandwiches. They close around 3pm so don't miss out on one of their freshly made masterpieces! 10 minutes away are lots of restaurant options for quick grab-and-go options. The hotel staff were awesome! I had a really long day of walking up and down hills and really needed an ice bath. The lady working the desk hooked me up and gave me a big bag of ice....very cool!

Woefully grim!

Very poor for a Green King.
Property surrounded by resident permit bays only, which was not mentioned when booking, only no on site parking. Room was awful and grubby, in desperate need of updating (see photos)
I would be embarrassed to have any family stay in this family room, it was that bad we almost left but decided to go out all evening and only reluctantly sleep there. Had i known the state of the place I would have stayed well clear.
I have stayed at Green King places before and been generally happy, but this was a awful room.
The busy pub downstairs was freindly and ok. Would not stay again and probably steer clear of Green Kings in future now.
Cant add photos , but trust me it was very sub standard.

Good value room above a pub conveniently located

We stayed at Channings because it was convenient to visit family in Clifton. Rooms were fine for our needs, wifi was good enough for work-related video calls, continental breakfast was good. Staff were helpful. Since the rooms are above a bar, we were not surprised by typical noise from downstairs, and it did not affect our ability to rest and sleep.

Absolutely NOT worth for the price I paid.
In my room the heating didn't work so I asked for the room to be changed (which thankfully they did)
The room furniture was badly chipped as well as the bath tube.an extremely old TV : no way I could connect an amazon firestick.
I was the only costumer sitting for breakfast and I had to wait more than 20 minutes to make my order.
I kindly asked the receptionist to send me an invoice via email which she never did.
Quality of the food served not bad.

The hotel is ok but needs a lot of TLC. It is functional but certainly don’t book if you are looking for a spacious room with a modern feel. The room we had was small and outdated with a double bed that was comfortable. We did use the restaurant downstairs for dinner, which was reasonably priced and food was good. Breakfast was your normal continental or cooked breakfast and again it was ok. Parking in the area is a nightmare and the hotel does not have any or even one space where you can off load your bags. We ended up parking about a 10 minute walk away.

We chose a family room because we needed two beds but the condition of the room was terrible. The state of decoration was terrible and the luggage rack was non useable because it was hanging off the wall. There was no toilet roll holder, just the bracket on the wall, so the toilet roll was on the floor. Senior management of Greene King should try staying in their hotels and ask themselves if they would personally pay £135 to stay in that room.

Needed to be near Clifton and City centre so this ticked both boxes. The hotel/pub was comfortable with tea/coffee making facilities in the room which was replenished daily .Check in/out was easy and the staff were friendly and efficient. I was able to walk to Clifton village and Bristol city centre..As a female solo traveller I felt safe and would definitely use again

We stayed here as 2 families: 3 adults and 4 children.
The family rooms were spacious and equipped with comfortable beds.
The breakfast was excellent value and very tasty.
The building itself needs a little TLC, but that didn’t lessen our experience.
All of the staff we encountered were very helpful and friendly. They helped us with looking after our bags and transport queries. They were even patient with our excited children.
The location is nice and quiet. It is in a pub so there’s bound to be some noise at closing time, but that’s to be expected.
There are several buses available nearby and it’s only a short walk to the suspension bridge & play park.
We would definitely stay here again.

This was the 2nd time we had stayed at Channings, it suited our needs perfectly as family live close by.My criticism is with regard to the general state of the decor in our room,(22). It was tired and in parts rather shabby. I am certain that there is a programme for renovation but I believe there needs to be a sense of urgency with this.
Our room was cleaned well and the water fabulously hot, for which I thank you.Reception staff were friendly and helpful.

Dated and run down but didn't spoil our stay

The room was large and comfy but very very old and aged. Not sure anything but a lock of paint has been done to the rooms for 20 years plus! It didn't spoil our stay and I liked that the room was large, but have low expectations about the room! Walls also paper thin but quiet location on a Sunday night.

Stayed for one night only with my partner & son. The carpet was dirty & stained to the point I wouldn’t walk on it without any shoes on, the bed stand was stained & dirty, bed linen clean. Ceiling was stained & dirty, there was a hole in the wall, cobwebs everywhere, very old & shabby but definately not chic! Downstairs bar & gardens were nice & you could certainly see where the money had been spent & where it hadn’t. Would not recommend staying here, couldn’t wait to get out.

It is Hotel & Pub. So be prepared for the loud noise till late at night. Even though the pub closed around 11pm, people were hanging around on the road till 2pm.
The rooms were very dated & uncomfortable. They didn't have enough digital keys for the guest to check in.
The only thing nice about this Hotel were the staff. They were very polite & friendly.

So bad we could only laugh!

Literally the worst place I have ever stayed. Room was dirty, holes in the bedding - the bed wasn’t actually a full size double. The headboard was caked in dust, the side lamps lampshade weren’t attached and just rolled around. The gap under the door was so large that the hallway light lit up the room like Blackpool illuminations. To top it all off we had no hot water for showers in the morning.

Cheap for a reason

Hotel was dated and in need of a good refit. Bathroom door had no catch so couldn't close the door fully. Didn't feel clean.
The rooms are nothing like what's pictured on the website.
It didn't help that the only reason we chose this hotel was for the free parking. When we got there, we were told it was a mistake made by Hotels.com and we ended up having to pay as the hotel refused to honour the mistake.

No parking!!!!

On the website it said free parking, we got there to find no parking at all. The 'kids' that were running it just laughed in my partners face about this, no apology, nothing.
If we were to have stayed, would have had to leave the car some road about 5 mins walk away, not knowing if it was safe, and having to pay aswell.
There was no apology, and when spoke to the manager, she cancelled the booking, and sarcastically said 'glad you got what you wanted' which is completely unprofessional.
No apology, or even attempting to sort anything out, or even an offer to pay for the parking as a gratitude of good will, nothing.
Won't be booking this again.

Bed was terrible (lower back aching as incredibly hard) but biggest problem was the noise throughout the night. I could hear couple in next room as no sound-proofing it seems. Really uncomfortable. Breakfast acceptable generally (porridge out of date but it tasted ok so didn’t complain!) They ran out of butter though and just said “delivery is tomorrow”. Unbelievable that in a city 2 members of staff can stand chatting whilst no butter for toast.....in my opinion they should’ve used some initiative and gone to shops!

Location excellent but hotel is in urgent need of renovation!!!! Everywhere you look , the room is very with , the bathroom is awful . Hot cup can only be switched on when you put it on the floor as lead too short ( or socket too low?) . But the room was clean , bed comfortable and immaculate . Bar staff is doing the check in and are quite uninterested and quite offputting. Overall an experience that one wishes not to repeat !!

Pleasantly surprised and would consider staying again as reasonable value for budget family room. Pro’s fabulous location near Clifton village so what’s not to like? Only one small negative was some (not all) the bar staff could try and be a bit more friendly and cheery and remember they’re in the hospitality industry even if not their full time job. If you don’t like the public don’t work where people expect and welcome a warm welcome. Other than that small but important note would consider staying again if budget room needed in this beautiful area of this top city.

The location of the hotel is fantastic and the staff were friendly. The bar area is very pleasant and they serve a good selection of most drinks especially gin. The room itself was spacious but in desperate need of a refurb. The bathroom was functional but uninviting. If like us you aren't going to be spending any time awake in the room then this is ideal.

The heating in the room didn’t work, which in January with snow forecast wasn’t pleasant. I was passed over the counter an electric heater. The room itself seemed to be falling apart, even went to lock the bathroom door and the catch fell apart as well as wallpaper pealing off the walls. The door also had a large gap which I had to cover up with my suitcase.

On top of all this, I was told that my breakfast was included in my room, and then after having ordered breakfast both mornings I was then told it wasn’t included.

The staff seemed like they would rather be somewhere else and were also complaining about it being cold (despite previously seeming to be unaware of the heating not working in my room...)

The positive side to this hotel is it is in a good location. Close to nearby restaurants and bars.

However, I certainly won’t be booking a room at this hotel next time. I’ve stayed in better hostels!

A waste of my time and money. Some of the staff were unwelcoming, and one afternoon the waitress smashed a tray on the counter just because she was upset about god knows what. The breakfast that was included in the deal consisted out of a coffee, tesco! pancakes and croasones. \"Warm breakfast\" was offered in a price of 7.99 (full English). The bed was very hard. In the room wasn't enough storage space, all the suitcases were laying on the floor. The doors closed very loudly, and there's zero sound isolation.

Fantastic basic rooms, which are clean and airy with great food and can cater for a gluten free diet no problem. Based a short walk to buses to Bristol City and other places of interest this hotel is a great base to either work from or have a break away.

Channings Hotel is a gem, a glorious example of a grand old place form long ago. Now the place has been taken over (downstairs) by huge areas devoted to TV sports and pool - a perfect place to while away a rainy afternoon.

Our room was on the third floor, so without a lift, it was a slog, but the room (for the three of us) was great - clean and spacious, with a fascinating roof shape and good views from the window.

Breakfast was OK, with a range of options.

Overall, would happily stay here again.

We booked via Expedia which seemed pretty straightforward - but when we arrived at the hotel we found that although we had clearly stated the room was for 4 people (2 adults and 2 children), the room which we had been allocated was a family room for 3 (with only 1 extra bed). The fact we had booked for 4 was clearly stated and visible on the hotel’s computer system when we checked in. However, we were told by the hotel that the room allocation was nothing to do with them and that Expedia did it all. We were then told that there was no alternative room available as the hotel was full, and that no spare bed was available to put in the room either. Although eventually an additional spare bed was found (and we were given a complimentary breakfast to compensate for the trouble) we spent a stressful while wondering how on Earth we were going to find a last minute room somewhere else on a Bank Holiday weekend. After an initial rather off-hand response to our problem, the hotel staff redeemed themselves and we were given very good service thereafter by both the hotel management and the bar staff in the restaurant. We paid a lot for the room (presumably because it was a popular Bank Holiday weekend) and I don’t think the standard of the hotel warranted the price. Common areas such as the toilets were tired (and soap not refilled in the gents two days in a row) - our room was clean and comfortable but badly insulated and we were kept awake by the noise in the bar below.
