We had a lovely holiday here, clean room friendly staff, good pool, nice breakfasts and short walk to a great town with loads of tavernas and bars. Beach great, rocky but beautiful. Prepare to haggle down subbeds. Took our two young kids and it was all stress free and lovely.

Where to start… my honest and comprehensive review of Hotel Makarios where I stayed for a week a few weeks ago.

The Good:

The rooms are clean, well-equipped, and tidily maintained. The housekeeping team really does an excellent job – everything felt fresh, and the beds were especially comfortable. The location is fairly quiet, though it is directly under the flight path with planes landing nearby. Iys around 10 minutes from the airport in a taxi that will set you back between €30 and €40. That said, it's only about 10–15 minutes on foot away from the lively Kamari beachfront, which is convenient.

The Not-So-Good:

Unfortunately, there were several areas that needed improvement. The pools were okay – the water appeared green and murky, and the surrounding tiles looked neglected and in need of a deep clean. The poolside toilets, although plentiful, are located underground behind a damaged door. The lighting is so poor that you can barely see anything inside, and there are no signs for gender designation or locks on the stalls, which is a concern.

Breakfast was underwhelming. It’s quite limited – occasionally, some bacon and beans, overcooked scrambled eggs, a few pastries, and some scattered continental items. The dining room itself is stiflingly hot, which may be intentional to avoid overcrowding, as none of the windows are opened. The staff do work incredibly hard under these conditions, but it doesn’t make for a pleasant experience. Breakfast is only available from 8–10

I was shocked during check-in. I didn’t like the behaviour of the manager. We were charged 60 euro extra for our kids which was not mentioned in the hotel’s children policy. To my utter surprise the manager even threatened us of cancelling our prepaid booking & shockingly asking us to leave. How can tourist just leave a place which they booked earlier & the place is in an island.

Lots of space in our room. Very close to the airport and there’s a bus stop right outside the hotel. It’s a 10 min walk into town, 2-3 minutes to the rocky beach. Lots of privacy by the pool (no one really walking by as this location is a bit remote). Towels can be borrowed for the pool for a refundable 10 euros.
The airplanes land nearby and you can hear then but you get used to it. The air conditioning works very well. We had a small fridge, which was awesome. 2 euros to get to Thira by bus and the restaurants were much cheaper in this area. We also had an balcony with a place to hang wet items.
Overall it was a great experience. The sunrise was breathtaking and you could see it from the property but there’s a better view just a couple of minutes away.

Lovely comfy stay

What a cute comfortable affordable unique hotel.
They were very accommodating and communication was great.

The beach and restaurants are about 6 min walk away but there are no pavements and sharp corners and the cars come around fast and sudden so dangerous especially at night when there is few to no street lamps - be careful!

A decent stay away from the heart of Kamari

We were part of a group of 13 travellers and we had a great stay here. This hotel is not really central or in the 'heart' of things at Kamari beach, so be prepared for that. It's a good 15 minute walk to restaurants and shops. The beach is nearby, but not much else. The staff are wonderful and go out of their way to be helpful. No request was too much for them. Request upper floor rooms. Breakfast is good... not the best, but good. The pool is nice and the pool bar is an added bonus. Overall this is a good 3-star hotel with 4 star service. It feels very much like a family run hotel.

Had a great stay here! The team here are absolutely lovely and go out of there way to help organise tours, transfers etc for you and are overly very kind people. Would happily go back and recommend the place. Convenient location to Kamari beach but just far enough out that it's quiet and relaxing.

This hotel was very comfortable to stay at to begin with. My wife and I found this hotel listed as all inclusive and it was just that. The bar right near the pool would give anything you requested that was on the menu for drinks and food that was on the \"All inclusive\" menu that is. There wasn't any other alcohol for free except the house beer and two wines. So if you're looking for margaritas, hard liquor you won't get it for free. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner was part of the all inclusive package, but we didn't much care for the food there. It was nice to get a quick bite before we left and went to explore, but we ate out most of the time. The staff was amazing however, always greeting us and asking if we needed anything or wanted or advice. They were there for everything and SO helpful. A customer is able to rent a four wheeler there (Santorini's main mode of transportation) if you have a license and all required documents that is. The WiFi wasn't always the best, but it was good for checking an email or to and so on. We didn't need to have WiFi because there's too much to do with such little time. Overall, on the budget we had this hotel was very accommodating and a pleasure to stay at. I will say obviously there are much nicer hotels on the island, but this was almost beach front (a 10 minute walk or 3 minute four wheeler ride) and a very nice hotel to stay at. I mean who wants to spend all their time at the hotel? We went out to explore and have fun!Thank you Makarios!

Paid for all inclusive but the food was terrible and even the drinks were awful. Lucky near enough to town to the to go out for meals twice a day.

Turned out to be much more expensive and ended up buying food everyday anyway.

A hotel run by a nice family. The rooms are cosy and clean not so big. Our aircomdition was great but we had to empty the water filetr most te. All inclusove but self seevice nice hreek food. Wish ot had any entertainment for summer but we rented a car and so much to see in the island. Pool is great and no need to go early and reserve the bed. The drinks included in the all inclusove are very limited like roki and white house wine or lemonade but we do not drink much. Clean pool area. Not so noisy most year. Very nice manager and owners and staff all. Thank you

The attitude of this hotel management is pitiful. Smile to your face and then treat you terribly. The food is served as a buffet and in a room with most of the tables outside. At exactly the minute the buffet is over they lock the doors so you cannot go back and get anything, doesn't matter if you were talking and didn't get dessert, etc. The drinks are cheap and what you get for lunch they reserve for dinner. They start cleaning up before time is up so they can lock the doors. 30 minutes prior to the end of the buffet nothing is re stocked. It calls itself an All Inclusive but is not they charge for food and drinks after certain times during the day. The beds are uncomfortable, you can only use amenities such as ping pong up to a certain time, TONS of rules posted everywhere. You feel like you are checking into a child's summer camp instead of a hotel you are paying for. Terrible value for the money.

One of the biggest pools we saw in Santorini.

The staff were friendly and welcoming. Petros, the manager was very helpful making suggestions of places to visit and how to get around the island. The pool was really lovely - very clean and all the areas around the hotel were well maintained. We didn't use the tennis court or table tennis.
The hotel was within an easy walk to Kamari centre. There was a bus stop outside to get to Fira but we found that were more buses for the return journey if we took a bus to Kamari centre and walked from there. Otherwise you had to change buses at Monolithos and catch a second bus to deliver you to the stop outside the hotel.
Highlights were the volcanic islands tour, walking along the caldera edge from Fira to Skaros rock, lovely lunches at Ammoudi and Thirasia and the open air cinema at Kamari. The excavations at Akrotiri were worth visiting as well as the Prehistoric museum in Fira.
Santorini was beautiful but we found it very expensive. We usually spent about 8 euros on a coffee and a Coke!

Good location and friendly staff!

Me and my partner cam here and booked last minute to stay in Kamari for 4 nights, super easy to contact after hours if your flying in late after hour check in with the airport transport needed. The hotel was very nice, super friendly staff and always there to help your experience in Santorini.

The beach, shops and restaurants is only 10min walk down. It is also nice and quite hotel if you dont want to be close to Kamari town. Catching the bus is easy! It is only right in front of the hotel to get to Fira that comes every hour or walk into town to catch the bus every 20mins if you miss the bus in front of the hotel goes straight to Fira.

The staff there are friendly and super nice, the owner gave us a map around Kamari and gave easy directions where to go around Kamari and where the buses go to and from Fira.

In the near future I would definitely come back here again and thank you for letting us stay!

Fabulous resort for a Break

We were welcomed by Pedros the owner after our late flight arrival. First impression was very nice, the hotel lobby was spacious and welcoming with plenty of sofas to sit and relax.
Our room was nice with Bunks for the kids and a lovely balcony with a view of the stark hills of Santorini. Our bed was rather hard though.
The all inclusive package was magic. The Breakfast, lunch and dinner provided in the nice restaurant area near the pool was great. A lovely buffet style setup with something different everyday.
The pool bar serves selected unlimited beer, wine, soft drinks, tea and coffee as part of the all inclusive, so was nice to laze by the beautiful pool and have plenty of your choice of beverage. They also served toasties as a snack between meals.
The pool area was fantastic. We loved the setting with the Mediterranean in the background (beach about 5 minute walk). We were close to the airport runway approach, however the aircraft didn’t deter from our relaxation at all.
Close to Kamari shopping as well. Some nice boutiques and lots of souvenirs, bars and restaurants.

Great Hotel from the beach!

This hotel is sooo underrated! In my opinion this was an amazing hotel. The service was amazing and the owner Mario was very helpful in setting up tours and getting a rental last minute. Don't be shy ask Mario where to go and what do to - it felt like he was our personal guide. The all inclusive it is the way to go. The food was good breakfast, lunch & dinner - If your a wine person you'll love it!!

Very good hotel but very close to Airport

Enjoyed our weeks stay , our room was probably there smallest balcony only a chair width with sea view yes you can see the sea about 1/4 mile away. That said very friendly staff and helpful.
Rooms very well kept fresh towels daily great shower in our room.
Food was more Greek traditional which I enjoyed
It was all inclusive this was different to my other all inclusive stays drinks 10am to 10pm only and no spirits except raki & ouzo.
Bus to Thera £1.80 euros excellent bus stop outside hotel also go,s to airport.
Kamara tipically Greek & Thera is stunning great views and shopping etc.
Overall very enjoyable holiday would recommend to friends etc.
Ps The Aircraft taking off & landing didn't bother us at all it's says 10 mins away from Airport it is drive wise but end of runway about 300 yards.

Good experience at Hotel Makarios. Warm welcome, not a hi-end hotel but everything is there and the friendly staff is making such a plus. Walking distance to the beach front with all the restaurants, close enough to the airport, it is the perfect location is you have an early flight.

Just back from a stay here. All inclusive is limited so don't go thinking you won't need to spend. All staff at the hotel are very friendly especially the older man on reception (Pedros I think his name was) don't know when he slept because he was nearly always about!! Anything you needed to know he would know it!! Could be a Santorini tour guide.....
On flight path of airport, good watching the planes so close going over and you could actually see them land from our small balcony
Approx 10 minutes walk to beach and lovely restaurants and bars.
All in all lovely little place to stay

If you want to relax and be close to Kamari beach,this is the hotel for you,not to mention it is a very clean hotel,friendly staff and very close to great restaurants.It is a couple miles from the airport and while you are sunbathing at the pool you will see planes about to land,fly right over you which I think was so cool! 5 minutes from this hotel was an excellent restaurant named \"Lolos\"seafood,steaks,great wine,great prices recommended from the daytime recepionist Petros, which I dont think you will find a friendlier,more helpful,professional person in any other hotel,he is a true gentelman and I hope to see him again someday,he even made sure I got my gold bracelet which I forgot in Santorini,via courrier 2 days later!

First time in Santorini, definitely will be back!

We arrived at the Makarios having read mixed reviews and a bit unsure but from the moment we arrived until the day we left all worries were swiftly negated.

The hotel itself is underestimated in every possible regard. The owner and his staff should be incredibly proud of the level of service we were shown throughout our stay! Including arranging car hire, excursions and lending us a couple of towels free of charge to take on a Caldera cruise when our beach towels were drenched whilst 'drying' on the balcony during a late night storm. Pedros' kind and knowledgeable advice on how to navigate the island and where best to park was priceless. The gardens, pool and all areas of the hotel we checked out were spotlessly clean and every member of staff had a smile. We were allocated a pool & sea view room at the front of the hotel which was comfortable and kept extremely clean (and provided with new bed linen/towels daily) with a lovely little balcony.

Obviously we were not expecting the ritz given the price we paid but the food, beer, location and facilities were perfect for us. Don't be expecting chips at every meal, here they provide mostly plentiful portions of traditionally Greek dishes. Some imported beers/spirits are limited on the all-inclusive program so be sure to check the menu before ordering.

We'll be back as soon as possible! :)

Arrived and the hotel seemed ok, room was spacious. That night noticed a couple of ants by the balcony door thought nothing of it, next morning woke up to loads of them all over the floor and in the bed, told reception we wanted to move and they said they would just clean it and spray some ant killer, went out for the day and that night came back to the same amount, showed the receptionist the ants and said we wanted to move, he said there was nothing he could do. Got moved the next day. The food was ok, a bit of option but average overall. The pool and jacuzzi were filthy and could have done with a good clean!! The receptionist was helpful with excursion information and tours.

The hotel is very close to the beach, with a big beautiful pool and several small jacuzzis. The location is well communicated with a bus stop in front of it. Only that the breakfast is just simple basic things, and the quality is not very satisfying. But all in all, it's a good choice to have stayed in Kamari and in this hostel.

A splendid high class 3* hotel

The hotel provided everything we wanted.. relaxing friendly immaculate hotel inside and out. The bedroom was kept pristine each day and the staff were eager and happy to serve. The all-inclusive package meant we didn't need to look anywhere else outside the hotel. Food was varied and appetising . I especially welcomed the fresh salad and accompaniments at each meal. The table tennis was fun after a day at the pool or a trip out.We enjoyed the open air cinema which was a 15 min walk away as were the local shops, bars, restaurants and beach which we really didn't bother about as we had what we needed at the hotel! For a 3* hotel I rated it highly.

Kamari Gem!

My wife and I loved this Hotel! What more could you ask for? Clean rooms, courteous staff, and great beach. The location is not directly near all the shops or restaurants, but it's only a 10 minute walk to the center. We always felt safe, even when walking back in the night. The breakfast was pretty basic, although that's what we expected. Kamari is a nice place to relax, eat, drink, and play! We felt right at home.

Read previous comments on trip advisor which left me with a little trepidation. Yes the airport is very close, so there is noise from planes. That can be said about every hotel in Kamari though. The hotel is spotlessly clean but what makes it like a home from home are the staff. You receive a very warm welcome from Pedros on reception who takes an interest in all guests and will assist with everything from the carrying of luggage, to organising trips/quads, etc. He'd remember where we were going each day and always asked about our experience. Two other members of staff must be mentioned being Penelope and Dimitris. These 2 are assets to the hotel and always served us with lovely smiles and attentiveness. We were reluctant to leave affect 14 nights. A lovely, warm, friendly hotel with the owner and his family always around making us feel at 'home'.

They advertise wifi in all rooms but is not the case if you get a room that's too far away as we did. Their wifi is slow anyways in the common areas and their hot water was like warm most of the time

Makarios Hotel

We knew the Hotel was close to the Airport so we were expecting a bit of Aircraft noise. Airport quiet at night so no problem sleeping. We were only on a Bed & Breakfast package to take full advantage of the numerous restaurants in town.The Hotel was spotlessly clean towels and bed linen changed every day. Air Con and Room Safe provided at no extra cost.

Good Value

My daughter and I spent 3 nights All Inclusive at the Makarios. The hotel is a good 15 minute walk from the main area of Kamari, but that suited us. It is virtually the end of the airport runway but the noise wasn't particulary intrusive day or night.
The room was clean and comfortable, however, as mentioned by others the shower area is very small.
Breakfast was typically cereal, bread, jams, juice, coffee, yoghurt and fruit. Lunch and dinner menus were varied and we never went hungry.
The staff were always polite and helpful.
I would happily return to this hotel.

Worst nightmare of my life

The hotel receptionist was the worst ill treating person I have ever met in my life. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone going from the UK as it does not meet any descent hotel standards. My and my wife were left stranded in the reception area for 6 hours before we finally got our room even though the booking was made through Expedia. The receptionist kept saying that the room is not ready yet and he even tried to have a go at me for asking him over n over in 6 hours about when the room will be ready. He even tried to have a fight with me for not booking the island bus trip through him so that he can get commission. I can literally swear here in the review but I would not do that and I am just trying to help u guys and making you aware of the cruelty and rudeness that prevails in this hotel premises. I absolutely have no complains for the restaurant staff and food in the hotel but the room and receptionist were dreadful. I literally had to beg him to provide me with a double bed in the room instead of two single beds because I was there with my wife and not with mates. It was confirmed in the booking that double room will be provided with double bed yet I had to beg and haggle with that cheap guy so that I can peacefully enjoy my holiday.

nice abd clean, but don't plan on a hot shower

The staff were fantastic. They went out of their way to help us get acquainted with the island and even organize our car rental. Despite arriving on the island at about 4 am they had someone waiting to receive us in the hotel. The our room was kept nice and clean, but the bed itself was very uncomfortable. It was far too thin and firm and the same went for the pillows. The bathroom shower was quite small. I'm not very big myself, but with he door closed I was touching walls on both sides. The shower never had hot water and the water itself was very dry. Meals at the hotel were all buffets with most of the food resembling findings from a high school cafeteria. The one meal we ate there cost €15 a person and was the worst we had on the island.
