Friendly staff and unique, nice things like real dishware at breakfast and some unusual options at breakfast such as avocado and a variety of toppings for avocado toast. Also, very good coffee which was also a lovely find. Be aware, though, that The Ellery is a motel and is somewhat upscale but not upscale enough for the price. Bathrooms are tiny and there's no place to hang towels. In general, not enough light in the room. Our air conditioner made noise and, while we could finally sleep through it, I would've preferred a quieter room. If you stay on the first floor, you can hear every footstep above you.

If Expedia got me check in instructions like they were supposed to this trip would have been flawless. Office hours are short but when I called it was answered immediately and I was able to check in without any problems. This was an amazing stay especially when horse showing at 3 county fair grounds.

Really nicely appointed rooms! Very clean and comfortable. On arrival, the place looks like a motor inn, and we were expecting something not so nice. So when we entered the room, it was a lovely experience.
Breakfast was excellent -- wide variety of delectable food and decent coffee.

Only slight deduction on points: a lot of squeaky floorboard above our heads in Room 113. Didn't think there were rooms above us, but the noise (and squeak) of walking went on for some time.

Very clean, friendly hotel. Very comfy, great snacks and continental breakfast (not the yucky stuff from the 3 star chain hotels) We really enjoyed our stay and our puppies loved it there. They have a beautiful area that you can play ball or frisbee with or without your dogs. Can't say enough about this hotel. We stayed here for two days last week, one night at another hotel in town that's supposed to be the nicest (the other used to be the nicest, it no longer is. really fallen in amenities and service and we will not pay their prices w/ service that is that awful... that is NOT the Ellery though) We will definitely stay at the Ellery in the future if we need a local hotel or if our friends and family need one. They are amazing.

The bed was comfortable. The breakfast was self-serve and offered many choices. However, there were several problems. There was a broken window pane.. The master light switch did not work. The lighting that did work was not adequate. The bathmat was shredding. The toilet roll holder was broken. There was dirt on the floor. The fitted sheet on the bed was not properly put on so it was uncomfortable. The air conditioning and fridge were noisy. The walls were thin. You could hear footsteps from floor above and full conversations of people in other rooms. The staff was not defensive when all of this was reported and gave me a partial refund. The pictures on the website are deceiving. This is really more of a poor motel.

Absolutely had an amazing stay at the Ellery! I loved my room! My room was spacious, clean, open, and tastefully done decor. The breakfast nook in the morning was so cute and well thought out. I loved the common area with the huge fireplace! It also had a lovely green courtyard you could sit out in if you so desired. The staff was wonderful.

The best thing about this property is the location, meaning it’s close to Smith College and a nice walk to downtown (if you don’t mind a relatively long hilly walk, which I like). The room was clean and the bed was comfortable, and it was quiet. The negatives were a somewhat absent and disinterested staff, a lingering smell (unpleasant) throughout the hotel (I opened the windows in our room to alleviate the smell), and the overall tired look of the facility - cracks in the ceiling, peeling paint etc. etc. An expensive price worth it if the location is what you need most, but the quality overall is mediocre.

It is a unique hotel/motel. Some rooms have outside doors. We were on the second floor via access through the lobby. My only negative comment is there was no elevator. We had to drag our luggage up about 10 steps. A little tough for we seniors. The complimentary continental breakfast was nice and I loved the blue and white ceramic plates they used instead of paper plates. It was located in a quiet section of town. We would stay there again.

The hotel is well-situated on the middle of Smith College. It’s about a 15mn walk into Northampton. The hotel is clean, but looks like it was flipped, rather than having a full renovation. The bathroom is basic, and the water in the shower never gets hot, lukewarm at best. The sink gets hot, but not the shower…seems like a way to save money. The bed is comfortable, and the split-unit works fine. Breakfast is good and the lounge area is pleasant, as are the outdoor areas that provide seating. The staff are delightful and very attentive. The hotel is a safe and solid place to stay.

Such a sweet spot, so glad we were able to get a reservation. Wish we'd been hungrier and didn't have breakfast plans , but we did check out the offerings and they were lovely. And the community space was perfect as well, and the opportunity to grab a coffee, tea, cookie, yogurt etc at any hour was appreciated! Thanks for a memorable stay. We'll be back for sure.

Our thoughts on what should be improved:

1.Better bath mats. We found it on the second day of our 2 night stay. At first I didn't realize what it was. Small and odd but it worked. A mat for outside the bath is needed as well.
2. A shelf near the outlet in bathroom over the toilet. Putting things on the toilet is dicey.
3. The guest upstairs was walking around during the wee hours and it sounded like an army marching thru. Padding under the area rugs would help.
4. Spare blanket in the room is essential for unexpected chill.
5. Something to highlight where the electric plugs are in the desk. I only saw them the morning we were leaving.

POSITIVE ASPECTS:

What a gem right down the street from Smith College. I had a beautiful room on the second floor. The staff were friendly and helpful. I enjoyed my stay and look forward to going back again. When I unpacked my little bag for my overnight, I wished I had brought enough for a week. It was so wonderful.

The mini-split seemed to have an inaccurate thermostat; the room was definitely warmer than the 64 we set it at. Also, we were disappointed that the breakfast has apparently been cut back; we went elsewhere for breakfast. The pillows were too large and firm; it would be nice to have a choice of a softer pillow. Finally, we liked the large room (C1) but didn’t like the heavy footfalls overhead from C2. Overall, excellent value. Quiet, comfortable, and affordable.

A very nice inn. Did not realize it is actually a motel (first floor doors open to parking lot), but it was not a problem at all. Rooms were clean and well furnished. The breakfast was very good. And the rates were appropriate. I did not bring my dog this time, but I was happy to see they are pet friendly.

We booked our 'deluxe' room based on Expedia positive reviews but I have nothing nice to say about this hotel... When we arrived there was no one at the front desk, and when got to our room it was freezing so we put on the heater which was very loud through the night... In addition, the walls are so thin I could hear my neighbors word for word and footsteps over my head late night and starting at 5am, plus the garbage trucks at 6am. Finally, the bed was uncomfortable. I am scratching my head as to how this hotel got good reviews on Expedia - I had a horrible nights sleep...finally, the rate advertised on Expedia was $158 per night but I was charged $259.71... Hard pass. Do not book this hotel.

The AC/Heater going on and off during the night sounded like a plane taking off. Also The LED from what I believe was the fire detector would flash on/off every few minutes. It all made for a very sleepless night.

Property was cute - a redone motel with a hipster style and vibe. Good breakfast offering and easy drive to Smith’s campus and downtown (but not walkable IMO).

Bed was comfortable and all was clean. Main complaint was you could hear the upstairs room and people outside the door. Very little soundproofing. Would recommend a second floor room if at all possible for this reason.

All in all a fine option, depending on your reason for visiting.

Positives: the room was clean, nicely decorated, loved having the fridge in the room. Very cute place with a cool vibe and breakfast was good..the coffee was good! The note on the bed welcoming us was sweet ..
Negatives: the young man that checked us in said what seemed like a script and talked really fast so we had to ask him questions to understand what he said ...the floors in the hallway were creaky so we were woken up early with people walking by our room ..maybe a carpet in the hallway may be helpful for noise absorption... my husband got up at 8 am and took a shower and had hot water ..I waited until 10am to shower and didn't have any hot water so I couldn't shower ...no one was at the desk when we checked out for me to tell but I told someone in the breakfast ..she didn't seem to care she said "I'll tell them" overall nice hotel but was disappointed with the lack of hot water and that we were not able to check in early

The room was cold and drafty - the door needs weather-stripping. The heater blows cold as well as hot with the heat on.
The photos of the lounge show a lovely fire but we didn't know that the staff will only light a fire in the mornings (safety issue with embers not being cold by the time staff leaves for the evening at 8). Fair enough although misleading - everyone sitting in the lounge was disappointed not to have a fire in the afternoon. We were told at 4 we could not have a fire. It was below zero outside windchill and the room was chilly - could the staff instead have brought in a space heater or two?
Not the visit we had hoped.

Each visit, I've found the rooms, bed and bath clean and comfortable. The breakfast options are very thoughtful and help me start the day well. The staff at check in and check out are kind and attentive. It is nice to enjoy time by a fireplace, and the occasional puzzle at a table is a fun touch.

The lobby and breakfast area are very quaint, with large fireplace to keep you toasty in the morning! Room was quite spacious with two queen beds. A bit sparsely decorated, and maybe could use a larger rug, especially in winter time, but very comfortable beds.
