We had an excellent stay at the Shangrila Rada Ria hotel. The resort is extensive, offering plenty of activities. We particularly enjoyed the spa, the reserve, the pool, horse riding, and the diverse range of restaurants, including Italian, Japanese, and Malaysian options. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Special thanks to Milhan, Erly, Yadmin, and Adeline for their outstanding hospitality. We look forward to returning again.

This resort is feeling very tired. Service was generally good, occasionally inconsistent.

Room was spacious & quiet, but not in the best condition, although the bathroom was very clean (poor lighting, but clean). Cleaning occurred very late in the day for our room & turn down service was inconsistent. Amenities in the room were good. Flip flops & slippers were nice.

Had planned to use spa services, but the prices for services were outrageous.

At booking not advised we would be have access to both pools (the family pool was the only one open for our use) the more quiet ocean wing pool was only for club members???) pools was busy with lots of children. It would have been nice to have access to the more quiet adult ocean wing pool.
Beach was wide and usually empty. Please be conscious of the sand fleas, they are really bad, make sure your insect spray is effective. The trash on beach to the left of the resort is bad…really bad. You cannot take a walk on the paths in the reserve without an escort and you can’t plan to take a shortened walk that is not part of an organized longer group walk.

Buffet meals part of the all-inclusive, while extensive in choice, were not particularly tasty. Seafood buffet was particularly disappointing as far as quality and weirdly there was almost no choices for someone who doesn’t eat seafood. Best meal was an afternnoon tea served at the lobby lounge.

Over all this resort felt geared to families/large groups. Not 5/4 star, very mediocre

While the setting is undeniably beautiful and the staff are mostly genuinely friendly, the experience itself was surprisingly uneven and not at all 5-stars.

The food setup itself is super confusing. Many of the restaurants were closed and only one open each night, which caters to the all-inclusive guests. So if you’re a la carte, you’ve got to sit amongst a buffet and wait 40 minutes for every meal. And because of the location you don't really have a choice but to eat there.

We often had to ask for things more than once before they appeared. The wine we ordered one night was also off, and dinner often arrived cold because it took so long.

The staff were really kind and polite throughout, but it always felt like the service was running a few steps behind. Happy hour was a bit of a letdown too, with like 5 drinks which were all pretty terrible – a Carlsberg can?! Come on…

The check-in also felt disorganised, with no greeting or sense of welcome. It wasn’t rude, just oddly flat for a place that trades on hospitality. When we checked in we even found blood on the sheets. So not a great start. The people working there were mostly lovely, but the whole place seems to be struggling with timing, communication and organisation. It’s not 5-star really and if you're not doing all-inclusive I wouldn't bother.

It was great hotel. Staffs were friendly and room was nice and spacious. One thing though, even after I showed them and email about the 10 MYR per night tourism tax will be paid by Expedia at Check in, they still asked me again to pay at check out. It didn't happend at my other hotel, Le Meridien at all. Other than that, it was great stay.

The only recommendation would be for the Japanese restaurant to use less garlic when making the fried rice.

The breakfast buffet and dinner buffet offered a large variety of choices-fresh and delicious.

We recommend a stay in an ocean view suite for couples who plan to visit. It offered an outdoor soak tub to allow one to watch the sun set into the sea.

Little things made the differences at the Shangri-La Rasa Ria:

• cold face towel when sitting by the pool
• family friendly pools and activities for those travelling with little munchkins
• accessibility friendly
• located right on the sandy beach
• multiple pillow options - AMAZING!
• laundry service at an amazing price
• a thank-you note from the room attendants sealed the deal on the day of check-out

Service was excellent from the moment we arrived to the sad moment when we had to leave.

OK stay for the value

I booked stay in the hotel for 3 nights. The hotel was nice, comfortable, staff very kind and helpful and clean (unlike surrounding areas and beach). I had 3 main observations that ruined my experience. First was the laundry service, which damaged my linen shirt. Luckily I was offered compensation. Second was the food, which I would rate 4/10. Third is that you can’t really bath in the sea and there is waste laying around the beach. I think for the money it’s not the best, but only OK.

We were there for hubby's 50th birthday. We had the Ocean View Suite and it had a great view. The room was somewhat dusty which is not gr8 for my asthmatic husband, but the Housekeeping Manager, Wong Syen, took care of that. He also coordinated with his colleagues at the teppanyaki restaurant to throw for my husband a surprise celebration.

This is a beautiful property with an incredible reserve on site.

There are so many beautiful positives about this resort. The staff are warm and friendly. We stayed in the garden executive suite which was great for us as as a family with 2 small children.

The room was large with beautiful decor.

The kids pool area was great for both kids (5 8). The kids club is included in stay and had several activities but neither of my children wanted to take part.

There are several chargeable water ports and free use of kayaks and bodyboards each day. There is a dedicated games area with several board games and food ball tables etc.

The highlight is the amazing reserve - several walks and tours take place with the knowledgable staff. We took the sunrise breakfast which was incredible.

Breakfast is great with a huge variety and dedicated kids area.

The only downside to the resort is the price of food for both lunch and dinner. This is incredibly pricey and you can easily spend £150 on dinner for a family of 4 (without alcohol). If we were to book again I would definitely get an all inclusive rate. Service for lunch and dinner is also quite slow which can be frustrating at times.

However we would return in a heartbeat and would heartily recommend.

The resort is nestled in a quiet part of Sabah far away from city noise. It’s an idyllic place to be whether you’re there with family like us or if you want to go there for a couple’s getaway. The beach is really nice where you can have fun water sport activities. The staff are great and will always find a way to keep your holidays stress free and memorable.
A few notes for the management. The building is showing a bit of age. I’d recommend the hotel to update the doors, wooden furniture and carpets in particular as they are showing signs of wear. The hotel particularly needs to clean the beach all the way across and not just in the front of the hotel. We had to turn back from our walk after a few minutes as it appeared that nobody was cleaning the beach to the right of the property.

We were a group of women celebrating our 40th birthday’s. From the moment we arrived, the staff for so kind and welcoming. The resort is beautifully located. The pool was amazing and the food and drinks were superb. We tried a bit of everything- from hiking the reserve, SUP pool yoga, beach volleyball, karaoke, waterslides, the day spa…we decided to upgrade our rooms for the last couple days and made use of the Ocean View Rooms which have a bath on the balcony. We met Fiona the General Manager and she ensured the staff went above and beyond for us and organised a special dinner and breakfast. I honestly couldn’t fault anything and I keep telling everyone how much we loved every second. I cannot wait to go back. Thank you again for everything!!

Our stay was perfect: the staff were all so friendly and helpful, the grounds of the hotel are beautifully maintained and extremely spacious and the large selection of food and different types of restaurants was very impressive. The private beach is west facing so you get to experience amazing sunsets and the hotel kindly upgraded up to a lovely room with a great view of the beach. This hotel will always be very special to us as we got engaged on this trip and couldn’t have asked for a better setting or a more memorable trip!

It should not be considered 5 star hotel… did not even have coffee machine in the room, telephone in the room smelled SO bad, the room is very old and AC was dripping water. TV was in Chinese language setting which took staff to fix for an hour and doesn’t even have Netflix either. It rained two days during our stay and the only restaurant open was buffet style which we got charged even thought we could not get seated so we left. Very unfortunate

Beautiful beach and swimming pools. Location is a little remote, excellent for getting away from the city, but a bit too far for going into Kota Kinabalu regularly. Service was good. Prices were decent. The resort needs a bit of updating - the showerhead was leaking, and cleaning the bird poo from the beach bar tables and chairs.

It is an amazing resort with great service and wonderful activities for children. Lorena checked us in and was a superb host for us at the start. Alif was very friendly, and even the ranger gave our daughter a lovely evening tour of the glow in the dark mushrooms. Nothing was too much for them.

This was a very nice property with a great pool and comfortable rooms. My daughter loved the waterslide and had fun at the kids club. The discovery centre was a unique addition. The restaurant offerings were delicious but lacked a bit in terms of completing a meal (eg Indian food but no raita or chutneys, Malaysian coffee but no condensed milk). The pool area could have used more things like light sandwiches , nachos etc. attention to detail could be improved on (eg you ask on your online ordering how many guests are eating, but then never deliver the required cutlery). Overall we had a great time and I would recommend this stay to friends, however small improvements would take this from a 4 to 5 star stay.

From the time I arrived and was greeted by Alfio, who cheered me up and arranged activities, a bubble bath in my room, to dinning with Clifford, Peachy, and Aldridge at the Japanese restaurant. Food was extraordinary. Sharon who made the morning sunrise hike at the reserve unbelievable perfect. Dora and Hassini at the spa are amazing!!! Best hands ever!!! Melvin who arranged amazing tours on the resort. Ms. Fiona the GM of the resort who was gracious and kind and a perfect example and reflection of the staff’s heart and soul. This is definitely a piece of heaven and I was blessed to be surrounded by such an incredible place. My stay could not have been more special and perfect.

We recently stayed at the Shangri-La resort and had a mixed experience. While the service and facilities were generally good, there were a couple of significant drawbacks.

Firstly, the prices within the resort were surprisingly high, comparable to major Australian cities. This made dining and other activities quite expensive, which didn't feel reasonable considering the location.

Secondly, the beach, which is a key feature of the resort, was disappointing. Due to ocean currents, the beach was dirty and lacked the expected tropical charm. This was a major letdown as a beautiful beach is central to the appeal of a beach resort.

Overall, while the service and amenities were commendable, the high prices and underwhelming beach detracted from our overall experience.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay over New Years. We had two ocean wing connecting ground floor rooms for our family of seven and they were spacious and great. Highly recommend Ocean Wing for the private reception, more attentive service, breakfast options and quieter pool although the ocean wing is far from all kids activities.

We had an issue with beach golf but the staff apologized and more than made up for it with ensuring we got to do all the water sports we wanted. Sheldon at water sports was a star.

They need to train their staff better. Our checking was worst. Staff was trying to sell us an upgrade when we didn’t take it we were given the key and ask to go and find our room. In this event they forgot to tell us about the hotel facilities and activities offered. In the morning when we were trying to look for the activities they were either completed, started or full. Basically, we could not participate in any of the activities offered by the hotel which we initially planned to. I ordered a coconut water with coconut meat but the coconut came without the coconut meat and half of the water was spilled. I went to the reception to try to book for diner, we were completely ignored and the lady kept working on her computer acting as she did not see us. We eventually left.

The staff at this hotel are exceptional and very friendly. The hotel has seen better days. It’s very worn and tired. I would say more a 4 star. When it first opened I can imagine it would have been amazing but everything just felt faded. The grounds are very week kept. Long lines for the breakfast on the weekend. The hotel is a little remote so there’s nothing near by. Again - staff make this place great but needs updating as fell short of what I would expect a Shangi La 5 star resort to be.

There are many activities you can sign up for that is organised by the hotel. The staff are friendly and ensure that I was cared for throughout my stay. Love the room (ocean view) and service the most! One downside is there is nothing much to explore out of the hotel and it is a distance to travel out.

Beautiful hotel and surroundings. However, did not offer value for money like other Shangri-la resorts. Garden wing seems a little outdated as compared to ocean wing. The food and beverages were top notch.

The Japanese Restaurant is good enough for both food quality and the friendly of staffs. But for the reception, the direction to check-in not clear enough and make us including senior citizen walk from carpark and climbing staircase to check-in. As expedia VIP, there didn't get any extra offer or upgrade, this quite disappointing me due to my status just seemed useless.

Overall is good but the hot water is not as hot as it is. So when we want to go for a dip in our room’s outdoor private pool, the water is not hot. We cannot dip at night in our private pool.
