Overall observations:

Check-in was easy. Receptionist was friendly and gave us the usual details about a hotel stay.

The property looked like it was repainted several times over and you could see all the different layers of paint in different parts of the hotel. The contractor’s paint job made the property look outdated and of poor quality.

The rooms looked clean. Beds were comfortable and pillows were of different firmness types/depths and quality. The room did not have normal blankets and we did not ask for them so be aware prior to your stay. The bed covers were worn and looked dingy. It would have been better if the hotel didn’t use them.

The heater/AC unit was a bit loud so it was hard to sleep. It was also difficult to keep the room at a consistent temperature but it wasn’t too bad.

The outlet to a tall lamp could not be plugged into the adjacent outlet. It appeared as though a plate was put inside the wall to prevent the outlet from being used. We thought perhaps it was a child safety outlet but it was not the case. All that to say, the room was dark.

The bathroom did not have a trash bin. The basic toiletries were Dove products. The water was hot but the water pressure was low.

The indoor pool was closed and there was no notice at time of booking.

The breakfast service missed the mark.

I booked AND PAID for a two night stay (Friday & Saturday) through Hotels.com where it clearly states that I can check in at any time after 3PM. After a long 4.5 hour turned 6 hour drive into Christiansburg due to a blizzard, I arrived around 3:30 AM early Saturday morning, just to be told my reservation had been canceled. Apparently paid for or not, if you haven’t checked in by 3AM they can cancel your room. I’ve NEVER had this happen before.

I was told to contact the manager about a refund, and ended up having to book again. It’s about 4AM when we make it to our newly booked King “suite”, where we find the bathroom sink doesn’t drain. So I call down and get a new room. This one had one 1 towel, 1 washcloth & no desk chair. But it was clean and the heat worked, so we made it work.

Trying to get a hold of the manager that apparently only works 2hrs M-F was a joke, so I gave up on trying to get my money back!

The first room we were in was bad. It smelled, the carpet was wet and the inside door handle was missing on the bathroom door. We didn’t ask to be moved until I saw a bug on the wall.
Both front desk ladies were very nice and accommodating. Our second room still had a funky smell but it was better than the first, door wasn’t wet and there was a door handle. I did not see any bugs in that room. We were only there two nights

When we first checked in, we were given a room with two full beds when we had reserved a double queen room. When we arrived in the room, there was dog hair all over the beds, there was a massive stain on the comforter and there small bugs crawling around on the dresser and on the bed (they were not bed bugs). In addition, when we pulled the sheets down on one of the beds, there was a stain the size of my entire fist at the top of the comforter. We were given a new room upon request and we still were not given a room with queen sized beds. The room only came with 2 towels when we had a 4 person reservation and when we asked the front desk for additional towels in the morning, there were none available. We will never be staying at this hotel again.

We stayed at the Wingate while spending the weekend at Virginia Tech. The location was convenient, with plenty of restaurants, shops, and amenities within a reasonable distance of the hotel. The bed was comfortable, and the room itself met basic expectations for a short stay.

However, the experience was let down by the front desk staff. On two separate occasions, no one was present at the front desk, and ringing the bell did not bring anyone out to assist. At one point, a staff member’s child was running up and down the halls and through the lobby on the tile floors in socks, which felt unprofessional and distracting.

The pool was closed during our stay, which was disappointing as it had been one of the reasons we chose this hotel. The breakfast wasn’t great, but at least it was available and provided a few basic options to start the day.

Overall, the location was convenient, but the lack of front desk professionalism and unavailable amenities made the stay less enjoyable than expected.

Although my stay was basic, I left a shoe there and have been trying to get in contact with someone to return my property. They charged me 3x for the same stay after their reservation systems kept having problems. They sent guests into our locked room at 1am even though we were already checked in. The same thing happened again the next day. They wanted my information again each time and assured me I wouldn't be charged again. No such luck. Charged 3x and both hotel phone numbers do not work and Wingate customer service sends you to a number that doesn't work. Avoid at all costs.

This hotel is in deplorable condition and is shamelessly exploiting Virginia Tech families during Parents Weekend, charging an outrageous $433 per night for a stay for a sub par experience. This is not hospitality—it’s opportunistic gouging paired with neglect.

What you get for $433/night: 1) The hotel hallways smell. The odor is sour and stale, like it’s been sealed off for months; 2) A faucet in my room (207) did not have any water pressure, you get a dripping faucet to brush your teeth and attempt to wash your hands; 3) A towel bar falling out of the wall, not loose—dangling!! but don’t forget the broken tiles & drain plug in the tub; 4) No working ice machines. Every floor, out of order. No alternatives offered, or explanations; 5) No clean towels available. Guests are told they’ll have to wait until housekeeping catches up; 6) Rooms aren’t cleaned. Staff admit they’re short on housekeepers, so don’t expect fresh sheets or a tidy room-even after being gone for 10-hours; 7) No manager in sight. Donna Bryant, the listed manager, has been “unavailable” for 2-days despite multiple requests. No accountability, no follow-up.

This is not a premium experience. It’s a slap in the face to families who came to support their students and expected basic standards of cleanliness, service, and professionalism. Wyndham should be ashamed of this predatory pricing and lack of oversight.

I’ll be warning every VT parent I know to steer clear of using this hotel for any VT events.

Room and bathroom is large. We have to ask for shampoo after checking. The car noise from I81 can be heard in room. It take forever to get elevator. Breakfast is total emptied at 8:30 AM, while it supposed to be served until 9:30. The manager told me they are making more while the server said they don't have anymore. It is not worth to spend the money here just to sleep, its not cheap.

This was the worse stay ever.
1st room fridge leaking and 2nd room although clean no breakfast the next morning. No one kept up with refilling only 35 minutes into the breakfast. Key did not work every time I left the room. One of the times the front desk not available for 15 minutes. Homeless people living in the parking lot in the back of hotel. This was the worse experience in any hotel
I have stayed in. Would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Seemless check in. The room is modern and updated. The most important part of the hotel, in my opinion, is the bed. This bed was very comfortable. The pillow was decent, as well. It wasn't one of those puff balls that a lot of hotels have that give your neck no support. The breakfast bar was the typical of what you will find. Overall good two night stay.

We picked this hotel because we stayed here before in May & it was fine. This time it was very unkempt. The lobby area smells like bleach. Very little staff w/poor customer svc. Very often no one was @ the desk! Main men’s bathroom was left in disgusting condition for days. No wipes or paper towels in gym. We requested housekeeping & did NOT get it. We needed more towels & were told they didn’t have anymore hand towels. The men’s bathroom in the lobby was disgusting for days. Asked for towels the second day & were given small pool towels. We asked if we could have housekeeping svc they said sure yet it was NOT when we returned in the evening. The gym had no towels or wipes & the trash was overflowing.
I would not recommend this hotel or stay here again.

Shady. Maybe 80/night at the most hotel. I paid 250 night and we had no towels for 2 days, I paid cash and they charged my card saying I didnt pay, ( police report pending) asked 4 times for toilet paper and was told not to ask the housekeeper because they don’t speak English. Food is sparce. Waffle machine handle broke and they have a plastic fork taped to it and you still need help to get to it. Elevator 1 of 2 out of service. They had a very nice gentlemen running the front desk and food, and housekeeping issues, by himself, the food area had no other staff in the building, he got out of his wheelchair to get us 2 wash clothes from housekeeping closet, said we have to come back after 9 am for towels (after asking a total of 5 times) didn’t have the heart to ask him for milk, eggs, at 7:45 am they were out of 3/4 of the food. I went out to eat. Several families wanted to check out and they were standing waiting for food to be restocked before they left, but they had to wait as there were 6 families in line to check out. Trash overflowing, we took pictures for the main company to see. I’ve never complained at a hotel and this had me almost iriate. Our room was clean and fairly comfortable.

It looked like they tried to upgrade the rooms but it was not done well, holes in walls, had cobwebs and dust in the room, no tv remote and you could hear every noise in the hallway. This is a great place to stop when traveling on I-81. Megan at the front desk was incredibly kind and helpful. The rooms are clean and it’s a great place to stay if you are traveling with a dog.
