I had a very good experience staying at Hotel San Rafael in Antigua, Guatemala. The location is excellent,just steps from the Arco de Santa Catalina and perfectly situated for exploring the city on foot. The hotel is a small boutique property with only seven rooms, which gives it a quiet, intimate feel. There is a beautiful central courtyard where breakfast is served daily from 7:00–10:00 a.m., and it adds a lot of charm to the stay.
We stayed in Suite Santa Rosa (Room 7), which is set away from the main courtyard next to a nice water feature. Rooms 6 and 7 are more private and removed from the breakfast area, which I appreciated. The other five rooms face the courtyard, and guests in those rooms may experience some morning noise during breakfast service.
Our room was clean, spacious, and very comfortable, with a particularly good bed. Housekeeping came daily, refreshed the room, and provided bottled water.
The staff throughout our stay was pleasant, friendly, and accommodating. The complimentary breakfast was also very good and felt thoughtfully prepared.
The only minor drawbacks were the lack of a refrigerator in the room and having to carry a traditional key on a large keychain. Neither issue significantly impacted our experience, though.
Overall, Hotel San Rafael is a charming, well-located boutique hotel with attentive staff and a peaceful atmosphere. I would stay here again and would recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable and centrally located stay in Antiga

Attentive, lovely staff who attended to our needs.Breakfasts daily were uniformly wonderful, prepared by a chef who made spectacularly perfect over easy(and scrambled and hardboiled )eggs daily.The hotel's location is also wonderfully central to the city, but if you don't want to walk Antigua's irregular sidewalks or cobblestoned streets. an uber will get you anywhere in the city for $3 or less.

We recently stayed here from the states. From the moment we stepped onto their property, we were well taken care of. From coffee as well as ham and swiss chesse sandwiches, great breakfast options to the friendly smiles and welcoming conversation. We were very comfortable here. Everything was clean, the garden area and fountains were beautiful. Artwork was displayed everywhere. If ever in Antigua Guatemala again, We would definitely stay here. I highly recommend this place! This boutique hotel was a beautiful, quiet little sanctuary in the heart of Antigua. The location couldn’t be any better considering you are right next to the Santa Catalina Arch and walking distance from everything you would need. From the staff to the owner of the hotel, everyone was so nice and helpful and gave great recommendations in the area. It’s also super helpful that they can organize private shuttles to and from the airport along with going to Lake Atitlan for an extra charge. Would definitely stay here again and recommend to anyone coming to Antigua for a couple days.

San Rafael is an exceptional property — one of my favorite hotels I’ve stayed at in the world. The design perfectly strikes a balance between historical, luxurious, and boho-chic. The common areas — luscious gardens peppered with art and cozy seating — are the perfect respite from the bustling streets of Antigua. The location is stellar, just steps from the Santa Catalina Arch but feeling serene, secure, and worlds away. And the service is top notch. Staff is friendly but unobtrusive. Breakfast is also the best I’ve had in a hotel in Guatemala: fresh, generous, and filling.

Exquisite Property!! San Rafael is so peaceful and tranquil, yet in the center of all the action! Steps from the Arch and many many dining options! You cannot beat this location! We were coming from the Lake and in order to avoid roadblocks we ended up leaving at 3am and arriving at San Rafael just before 6am. The staff were so helpful in storing our luggage while we explored Antigua! The staff here is wonderful and really make you feel like family! Rooms are beautiful and very clean! The entire property is truly gorgeous! We communicated via What’s App- very easy and responsive. They have filtered water in the kitchen and we refilled our bottles several times a day, plus they include a few bottles of water as well. We will 100% come back next time we are in Antigua!

The property itself is like an oasis within the city. The appointments, feed, service and style were wonderful. I will stay at this hotel again in a heartbeat. There are only seven rooms. We stayed in suite #7 which had an open air (closeable) to a water feature. The bathroom was top notch with a shower that could work for a 7 foot man. The suite had a beautiful living room with adjoining sleeping area. There is plenty of outside light and chandeliers throughout the suit.

This is a beautiful hotel with the most beautiful courtyard and rooms. It is very well made. The only minus point is that there is no AC in the rooms. We were here one night (because of this reason) and were offered a fan which worked well for us. But having an AC would definitely have impacted our decision to stay longer. The breakfast setting is beautiful right outside the room surrounding the courtyard. It was an overall beautiful stay!

We were SO lucky to have found this gem of a hotel. Although all of Antigua is a jewel, this perfectly located hotel hides behind a simple wall BUT inside is an oasis complete with gardens and tranquility for each large private suite. The staff is highly professional, well trained in receiving foreign visitors and understand our high standards. This hotel and its staff truly went out of their way to make everything perfect and we had the best stay. This is an amazing property from a location and design point of view. The only drawback is that there is no parking, or any arrangement by the property for parking elsewhere. They just suggested a car park that was about 3 blocks away. If you are not travelling with a car it won't matter.

This boutique hotel was a true gem. Everything about was excellent. I was there as a solo traveler. I felt very safe at this property. The staff was friendly and looked out for your needs. The hotel was beautiful, my room was perfect. It does get a little stuffy, as they don’t have AC, but it’s on old building, so they accommodate with a standing unit. The location is great, you can walk everywhere. I highly recommend this hotel

One comment that I will make pertains to guests having breakfast outside of your room windows at 8am which woke us up. I think guests should be encouraged to eat outside of their own room or in the common area instead of 3 feet away from our front door very early in the AM having conversations of which we could hear every word. I know this is hard to manage but maybe there should be a reserved sign?

Excellent Hotel in Antigua
The property was beautiful with each room offering a unique look/feel. Our room was huge and looked like part of a museum! San Rafael Hotel is right around the corner from El Arco de Santa Catalina and the main area of Antigua but as soon as you step inside the property, you escape the noise from the street as it is very calm and quiet. The owner and the entire staff were very friendly, professional, and accomodating. Having delicious breakfast (with many great options to choose from the menu) outside of your room overlooking the courtyard garden and fountain is a must. I highly recommend San Rafael Hotel and will be back for sure.

I cannot imagine a better place to stay in Antigua. A few hundred yards from the famous Antigua Arch, the staff was above and beyond expectations 24/7.
They found us a Mayan tour guide for the city walk and the next day out to the Iximché Ruins, we saw an actual Mayan ritual by people doing their way if life - ie not a show for tourists. There weren’t any there.
Back at Hotel Rafael, Ray and his partner built a little piece of perfection from excellent breakfasts, indoor ponds, and scores of candles. Amazing atmosphere. And amazing art decor.

San Rafael exceeded all our expectations. The location is right around the arch. This is not a five star hotel, but it's so much more. The owner clearly put a ton of their own touch to create this beautiful space. The room and the rest of the place is just exquisite. Staff is attentive and maintain the ground and room beautifully. Everywhere we looked was something to admire. Breakfast is fantastic and includes. Yes, there is no AC, so on a hot day you'll want the windows open for airflow, and because the windows open into the courtyard, you lose a little bit of privacy. But if that stops you from booking, then it's your loss. There are only 7 rooms and they don't let people just wander around, so the privacy loss is minimal. We have traveled all over the world, and hands down best place we have stayed.
