I stayed at the Westgate pub when in Winchester for work. The staff were friendly, my room was cosy and comfortable, and the food was great. The Westgate felt like a safe, welcoming place to stay and I would definitely visit again.

VERY steep, narrow and twisting stairs to access the bedrooms. BE WARNED!!!
Also bar refuses to take cash. Thats a big deal in my world.

Poor Breakfast and Poor service - Avoid

went to check in and receptionist said I should have paid hotel.com direct and that i couldn’t pay hotel directly. Spoke to Hotel.con who were really good and they confirmed the booking was pay on arrival. The hotel receptionist didn’t seem to understand the booking/payment process. Breakfast was absolutely rubbish, possiblly the worst breakfast I have encountered in 42 years of travelling and I would say I have stayed at over 1,500 hotels. The cold buffet were packets of cereals , wet/soggy pain au chocolate and pathetic croissant, had to ask for milk, jam , butter etc. Ordered the Eggs Royale and one cold poached egg arrived on salmon on a cold toasted soggy bread. The hollandaise sauce came separately and was cold. I did complain to the hotel - however their response was
“ Wow, I am really surprised to receive his feedback - we generally get excellent feedback about our breakfasts but I can see we missed the mark this morning with that Eggs Royale! I am so sorry for the issues you encountered and I have a meeting set for this afternoon with the kitchen team to discuss your feedback.

I apologise about the small offering; Unfortunately, due to an exceptionally busier than expected week, our breakfast selection was smaller than usual which generally includes sliced meats, cheeses and yoghurts; all of which are currently out of stock”

We had a lovely stay at The Westgate, lovely big room, bed was super comfy and it’s in a great location for visiting Winchester and its shops, cathedral and lovely Christmas markets! Breakfast was excellent and staff were always helpful. Wonderful stay.

The room was great, perfect for what I needed, really comfortable bed. The toiletries smelt amazing (I will probably hunt them down to purchase). Location for Winchester is also ideal. The only downside was breakfast I'm sure it would have been delicious but as I was needing to get to the office for 9am I was tight for time even if breakfast had been available at the advertised time of 8am but as there was a note on the stairs in the morning to say it was delayed (these things happen) I missed it

For a Pub with rooms I was pleasantly surprised how nice the rooms were.
The rooms are obviously newly refurbished but in really nice style.
All staff friendly and the Breakfast was delicious, included in our room rate too.
We stayed here because we had a family garden party, 5mins easy walk from Train Station and the town Cathedral super close.
I gave a 4 star rating on property only because my brothers room had a bad drain smell, they were a little miffed.

Unsatisfactory experience my partner and I had during our stay here from the 13 th to the 15 th July. We booked our stay through Expedia and expected a relaxing and enjoyable visit, but unfortunately, our experience was far from pleasant.
Upon arrival after a 6.5-hour drive from Newcastle, we were greeted with a notice on the external board informing us that the hotel was closed to the public due to an event. This information was not communicated to us at the time of booking or prior to our arrival. When we inquired if this restriction applied to hotel guests, the receptionist confirmed that it did. This effectively confined us to our room for the evening, as we had our dog with us and could not spend the entire evening out at local restaurants or pubs.
Additionally, the checkout process was highly unprofessional and inconvenient. On the morning of our departure, I asked if we could leave our bags in bar until we retrieved our car, as there was no parking available on the premises. The manager agreed and instructed us to drop our keys in the night door box and leave our items in the room, assuring us that he would let us back in to retrieve them.
However, when we returned at 10:50 AM, just ten minutes before the checkout time, we found the pub doors locked. Repeated calls to the mobile number on the door and the pub's landline went unanswered, leaving us stranded in the rain. We were finally able to enter when another guest happened to open the night door.

Location was great, 5 min walk from the train station, and central for the city attractions. Ben and the team were really friendly and helpful. The food we had was good value and tasty. We stayed in a 'comfy double'which was spacious and comfortable. The bed was extremely comfortable. Checkout was at 11am which is helpful.

Business trip. Nice stay nice pub nice staff although and I booked this B&B on the reviews I read (only the top 4 when viewing) if I had seen more reviews on the fact that they didn't do breakfast unless you book directly with them I would of chosen somewhere else. Also noted when leaving/checking-out the property you do so via the night entrance which the stairs down are very steep and you must be very careful if you have heavy or a large case with you. All that being said I did enjoy my stay.

When i booked this pub for a stay, on the website it stated Breakfast included which I paid, On arrival I received a piece of paper with information on it and it said no breakfast. Breakfast was included in the price, waiting for a refund. The room was freezing, the heating was on full, me and my partner was freezing at night. The shower was dirty, the toilet was dirty. I would not recommend this place.

What a lovely gem! Surprisingly quiet once in the room, despite a busy bar. The room felt sumptuous, it was clean and comfortable with all the expected extras (hot drink making facilities, hairdryer etc) Being older guests we managed the stairs reasonably well but it may not suit those with limited mobility, this is due to the historic nature of the building. Breakfast was not offered at the time we stayed but we found plenty of options nearby. We dined in the pub/inn and found that a very good call, although it is a popular place so noise was a slight issue ( very difficult to hold a conversation) but we accepted that as part of the experience. All in all a positive experience and we would return

Beautiful Georgian pub/hotel in the heart of Winchester. Pub is relaxing and friendly. Like the ability to order drinks/food from the table. Lovely bedroom and comfortable bed. Reduced road noise as double glazing helps with soundproofing. Highly recommend

The hotel was clean and comfortable and in a great location to shopping and restaurants, the pub downstairs is welcoming and warm. My only complaint is that the stairwells and rooms were being painted which created a hazard on the stairways and wet paint that everyone got on their clothes.

We stayed at the Westgate for a long weekend and travelled by train. We arrived early and managed to leave our case with the pub until check in at 3pm. We signed up to the City Club App but didn't receive any benefit when booking through Hotels.Com, also the restaurant was undergoing a deep clean so was closed for the first day. We decided not to use the facilities of the Westgate for the remains of our stay. Breakfast isn't served at the Westgate. Rooms 9 and 10 are on the top floor (3rd floor) and you need to negotiate via a narrow spiral staircase. The room was adequate and we had a comfortable stay. The rooms aren't serviced so any replacement items (toiletries, rolls, tea, coffee etc) need to be requested by email/text, which can lead to misinterpretation.The room was warm but we had a wall mounted fan. The sash window was jammed open with 3 books, which seemed to work well.There was some evening noise from passing vehicles/people as you'd expect from a city centred location.

We stayed one night at the Westgate and were only really there to sleep so did not need much from out stay other than a comfortable nights sleep - which was delivered.
The venue is very much a pub with rooms above rather than a hotel but that was not an issue for us. We were politely greeted on arrival, told how to get to our room and late night entry procedure explained.
The building is very old, wonky and with steep and narrow staircases which could be a challenge for people with large luggage. But the room was lovely: Clean and quiet.

Chose here on recommendation and due to proximity to the town. First impressions were good. Nice , if small, room. Generally everything was clean, with the exception of the toilet, which appeared to have been used prior to us arriving. This appeared to just have been an oversight as everything else was pleasant and in good order. Check in was quick and polite. This would have been a lovely stay had I not then needed to have an urgent meeting (over Zoom 🙁) the following morning. In light of the meeting I asked if I could check out slightly later (this is advertised on the receipt I got from the hotel as a ‘perk’ of downloading their app). I was told that this was only available to those who had booked via the app. I then asked if I could pay for a later checkout, only to be told that this wasn’t possible.
So after dinner we come back to the bar. Outside is advertised a 20% discount for key workers and emergency services personnel (both me and the other half qualify). Upon asking it’s apparently again only available if you’ve booked through the app. So no drink there then. Or breakfast (it’s not available currently). Instead I struggle down at 11am, mid meeting on laptop and with all our luggage, to be told I can’t even sit downstairs in the hotel because the bars not open until 12! So out into the high street it is! I get the app thing but come on, a little bit of slack and customer service wouldn’t have gone amiss. Not sure if I’ll go back, if so I’ll be sure to get the app

The staff were lovely and great.
The room was also lovely and clean with comfy bed and amenities.
The place is old so if you wake easily take ear plugs as everything creaks loudly and not everyone remembers fire doors slam.
The only thing it lacked for us was hangers to put our clothes on.
We parked in tower street car park with is very close and cheap. Only £2 on a sunday. You can also pay via an app (just park)so you do not have to keep gojng back to your car.

Attractive pub-hotel in central location. Very friendly staff at check-in. Rooms are basic, but the rate is reasonable.

However the bathroom was in a state when we arrived.The inside of the toilet had not been cleaned at all from the last guests, which was disgusting. There were hairs of all kinds on the floor and walls. Black mould all around the shower, the grouting just needs ripping out. Weird as they actually left nice toiletries and the bed had fresh sheets, so clearly someone had been in there to clean.

Only other very minor complaints were the extremely steep and long climb to our top floor room (not great if like us, one of you has a bad hip, but this might not bother everyone). There was also an issue with being led to think that breakfast was included, but they actually do not currently provide breakfast. I would provide more details but it involves a partner site and my last review was rejected by this website - I can only hope that this mention of a partner site was the issue.

Overall this could have been well recommended for the price & location, despite being quite basic, but they need to get their cleaning sorted completely out first.

The hotel room itself was lovely and staff friendly on arrival however after having being instructed to book 2 rooms by the hotel in order to upgrade a room then not being able to cancel the original room via Expedia or the hotel themselves I was left really disappointed. Cost double the amount I was originally paying and they even cancelled the second room against my request since I was still not getting a refund.

Stayed just the one night for a graduation, needed the room a bit earlier so as to get ready, the hosts were very helpful and accommodating in this request.(thx again). The building is listed so some renovations would not be allowed but this didn’t detract from a nice stay albeit brief. Showers were good. Rooms were fine for what WE needed, fans in rooms were helpful. managed to sleep fine, which is always a bonus. Yes would book a short stay again, At the prices we got. No probs

Very disappointed with the cleanliness. We aren’t ones to complain but this wasn’t clean. Carpet was covered in bits. Bathroom floor was covered in hairs. Shower was full of hairs. Kettle was dirty so we didn’t make use of the tea and coffee facilities and by how dirty it was I think the previous customers thought the same. It’s a shame as this could be a lovely place. Great looking building and room, great area but dirty room.

We stayed for one night and was not very happy. There was thick dust on countertops, a shampoo bottle when no lid was in the shower so not sure if it was properly cleaned before we arrived. It is an old building so the smell was not so great either. But the service was good and the people very kind.

We had a lovely stay at The Westgate. The room was spacious and comfortable and easily big enough for my husband and I and my daughter to share. The staff were really friendly and helpful and the food in the pub/restaurant was delicious - they even cooked my daughter a special child’s portion of fish and chips which made her day. Just 2 things to note. There is no parking and the pay and display that is recommended costs £15 a day. It would be useful to know this in advance. Also I understand it isn’t possible to offer a hit breakfast at the moment but it would be really nice if there was an continental option of cereals etc, so we didn’t have to got out to breakfast everyday. These are minor points and certainly didn’t spoil what was a wonderful stay

Quite noisy as is located on a busy street so if you are a light sleeper you will struggle. If you must stay in the centre of Winchester then an ok option. There are more peaceful and comfortable options if you are able to look further out.

Great location with so much history on the doorstep, or a short walk away, with a 12century gatehouse a few yards away, which the pub gets it's name from. There is no on-site parking but there is a multi-storey close by, and the railway station is a short walk, if arriving by rail.

Avoid if you can

It was awful for the following reasons:
1) went to the bar for drinks and dinner and had the most unpleasant experience with the staff. They advertise offers but refuse to honour them and when I complained about it, they became defensive and aggressive.
2) house keeping doesn’t make your bed for you which is extremely annoying and I expect better when I pay £100 a night
3) there is the constant noise of traffic given that the rooms only have single glazed windows. The hotel gives you ear plugs but I found them even more uncomfortable than the noise
4) all flooring above ground floor is wonky. My door had an 8 inch gap so light and noises from the corridor were flooding in

Sleepless night

Unless you are the soundest sleeper ever don’t bother. It’s so noisy because of the traffic. There was also a fight/ loud argument outside at 3am and the shower hot temperature switch is loose.

It was fun to stay above an old English pub. Location was perfect: short walk from train station, close to the Great Hall and an easy walk to downtown and the cathedral. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Just be prepared for lack of air conditioning and steep stairs up to your room!
