Brought my daughter to study at Groningen, she’s staying for the year at the social Hub. The hotel is Fantastic, clean and the staff are polite and can’t do enough for you. My daughter feels safe and is very happy to have chosen to stay here. Customer satisfaction is their major priority, well done to them all and keep up the good work.

Not what we expected

The photos on your website made The Social Hub look like a cool, funky place to hang out … but we didn’t realize that it is actually student housing as well. We and our friends are “young” 60-somethings, but we felt about as out of place as possible. In addition, they were hosting a mental health event that took over all of the public areas and caused the restaurant to be closed (they offered takeout, but we would have had to sit on our beds to eat). The entire bar/lounge area was unavailable as well, so we headed out on foot in the dark, ate at a terrible restaurant, and hung out by ourselves in our rooms. Had we known about the event in advance, we definitely would have booked elsewhere.

Definitely a good choice in Groningen

Excellent choice and interesting concept just over canal from centrum. Well thought out. Excellentb breakfast buffet the day we ate in. Originally geared for students but now has guests of all ages. Nothing student or hostel about the faccilities or staff. Good wifi. Good mattresses. AC, which is only helpful in a brief timeframe this far north but we appreciated having it that stay. The rooms have excellent sound proofing.

Rundown and disgusting

I stayed at The Social Hub for one night and it was a nightmare from beginning to end and ruined my stay in Groningen.
The first room was beat-up with stains all over the wall, the carpet was shabby and the furniture had dents everywhere. But the worst thing was how dirty everything in this room was. All the surfaces were dusty and/or full of fingerprints and/or full of stains, the sink in the kitchen was covered in limescale. The worst was the bathroom – limescale and all kinds of other dirt in- and outside of the shower. Below the toilet there was a big blob of a white substance, which I hope was body cream.
Naturally I asked for a different room. The new room was not much better, which made me realize that the lack of cleanliness is a bigger, structural problem at this ‘hotel’.
Again, there were thick patches of limescale in the bathroom; dust, fingerprints and splashes of dried liquids everywhere in the room – on the desk, the curtains, the TV screen, etc.
Other issues:
- The mattress was old, sagging and was also slanted to one side - which means: no sleep
- The temperature control in the room was either broken or disabled
- There was no hairdryer in the bathroom, even though it was listed in the room amenities
All of this makes me wonder – who is in charge of this place? These are not minor issues - the dirt, the worn-out mattresses, the lack of maintenance. Is this a conscious decision by The Social Hub to not care about guests' experiences and basic needs?

Bad AC - and they knew it.

The Social Hub is a hopping place. The entree looks very ‘active’ and all the different places where you can sit and work or meet are great. The check-in was very pleasant and quick. The elevator was very slow. I was surprised there were not more elevators for the amount of people and rooms. There were stairs that I did take coming down from the 4th floor but that was not trivial, there was a certain route to be followed.

The room was ok. I went to the room pretty late (I came from visiting at the hospital) and was tired and turned the lights and ac on with the room key in the slot. After an hour of mediocre sleep I woke up bathing in sweat. The room was really warm. The lowest the AC could be set to was 18C - in my recollection that should be colder but I was extremely tired. I tried opening the window for cooler air but that only worked if I kept the curtains open. The bright lights shining into my room were not helping my sleep either. By 2am I decided that the AC was not working correctly, the window and curtains open was not working either but what could be done in the night. I am in my pjs and so tired. I muddle through but it was not very pleasant.

The next morning I walk by the reception to tell them about the AC and the response was: “Oh I am sorry, yes we knew the AC’s were a bit finicky but thought we had it fixed” So sorry, have a nice day.

Do I want to stay here again? Not really.

This was a great hotel with a hub vibe. The rooms were clean and quiet, with sufficient room. The only let down is that the shower leaks into the main bathroom, flooding the bathroom floor.

The social areas are great, and nice to sit downstairs to relax outside of the room. The gym was an added bonus.

First time in Holland.

Stay was excellent warm friendly welcome rooms clean and very comfortable. Spent a few days exploring the city. Good restaurants and bars plenty of shopping. Festival was ongoing so a great buzz around the city. Next time I'll hire a bike as it looks lots of fun whizzing around..

I came to this hotel hoping for a good nights sleep. The first night there was constant noise from drunk people in the courtyard outside until 5AM. My window was closed. I’m not a light sleeper. I went downstairs at 5 AM because I had given up on getting any sleep, the receptionist was very rude to me, spoke to me like I was a criminal.
Note: I have been a customer of The Student Hotel for 5+ years and stayed in multiple locations, some more than once. Due to this experience I will never again use one of these hotels or their restaurants.

Also you might want to consider replacing the filters on the ventilation systems or increasing the cleaning schedules because the levels of dust in the air and on surfaces throughout the hotel was very bad, especially in this time of a pandemic the air quality is so important.

Will never come back again

Slow check in and no standardised procedure. Other customers were provided with 2 room keys but my husband and only have one. Others had welcoming drinks but not for us. Racial discrimination?
Very nice shower.
When we were in a hurry to check out, it was found that the elevator was under maintenance but no instruction how to locate another lift. We stayed on 7/F and could hardly take 2 big suitcases down to the lobby on our own. Trapped on the 7/F and had to wait for the staff to take us to the hotel lobby. Very angry!

When we booked, we were really hesitant because of the name of the hotel. But we have to say, this was the best hotel we stayed at during our entire 9 days in the Netherlands and we highly recommend it! Great atmosphere and concept. All residents and staff were fantastic! I stayed for one night so I did not explore the facilities as such but it seemed like everything was catered for. My only concern is that you are not asked for ID when you check in so if you have prepaid someone could steal your room. The breakfast is also lacking as nothing was labelled so in my search for tea I ended up with coffee and I could eat non of the meat as I did not know which was which, so as I have an allergie it was safer to not eat any of the meat.

The Student Hotel in Groningen exceeded my expectations in all ways. The area is nice, and it's walkable to everything you want to experience. The hotel itself is in a great condition. All of the staff are super friendly. The rooms are quiet and nice. I highly recommend this hotel. By the way, the breakfast is excellent. It's 2 euros cheaper (10 versus 12) if you pay for it at reception when you check-in versus paying in the breakfast room. It's a great breakfast, well worth the money.

A pleasant hotel full of students, but still quite silent in the rooms. The breakfast had a small selection of foods, but the quality of the food was exceptionally high. The gym had some crossfit influence, which makes it better than most hotel gyms. I would recommend this hotel.

Don't stay here if you want to sleep but otherwise

Don't stay here if you plan to sleep but in all other respects it's lovely. The fire doors are not held back by solonoids nor do the have soft close so all night long, doors slam. That coupled with residents having fights, tears and drinking men ballads at 2am and 4am means you won't look your best in the morning. Walls are paper thin so you will hear activity from several doors down. However the room finish is excellent and the bed comfortable. The coffee shop is good, gym looks fine (didn't use it), everything is provided and new. Close to the university. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is overpriced. Perhaps a good enough place to stay for one night if going out. Not if you need to function the next day.

Enjoyed my stay at the hotel. Check in and check out was a breeze and the staff were super friendly. Overall I was pleased with my room. It was clean and spacious although one has to be careful with the shower since there is nothing to prevent water from spreading all over the entire floor except a small towel that is provided. The bed left a lot to be desired - hard and not very comfortable. Breakfast was ok but needed more variety - got really tired of the same options especially after the fourth day. Generally a good hotel option at reasonable rates in a decent location.

This is a very basic hotel. The best room they had to offer was nothing special. The bed was very hard. The room could have been cleaner. There was garbage under the bed, a long hair on the blanket of the bed, and stains on the curtains. The common areas of the hotel were nice. They had books to read, a gym, and restaurant. I did not like that the bicycles outside blocked the sidewalk to get to the hotel. I think the hotel should have a disagnagted area for bike storage. Front desk staff were very nice.

Student Hotel Groningen - very good place to stay!

Hello, The Student Hotel was very nice indeed. I'm told its only about 6 months old so very nice condition. Buffet Breakfast was fine, choice of eggs (scrambled, boiled, poached with bacon rapper :-) ), ham, cheese, fruit, cereal, coffee and juices. Bike hire is 9 eur. / day and quite new (peddle braking - takes a bit of getting used to) Piping hot water nice pillows comfy bed. Great location 5 mins. walk from center, hence a good night sleep and easy access to all the restaurants and bars.

Really enjoyed our stay here. Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Hotel was virtually brand new when we stayed. Decor was completely different and made most hotels seem boring in comparison. Bar and restaurant on site were great. Good, secure car parking available next door too.

Das Zimmer war super klein, daher ungemütlich, ein Bad wie auf einem Boot, 1 min geduscht, alles nass. Pures Chaos beim Frühstück, keine Teller, Tassen mehr und es wurden einige Lebensmittel in der halben Stunde wo wir frühstücken waren, nicht mehr aufgefüllt, obwohl das Frühstück noch 1,5h ging. Leider werden wir als Paar dieses Hotel so nicht mehr nutzen.

Cercano al centro, alejado de la estación central

Ubicado entre la zona céntrica y una más residencial, es un lugar perfecto para visitar Groningen, sobre todo en bicicleta ya que no está cerca de la estación central. Se intuye que la intención del establecimiento es que los visitantes se mezclen con los locales en espacios creados para ello tales como salas de juegos, reuniones y gimnasio, aunque sinceramente no vi que funcionase, tal vez debido a la temporada estival. La habitación era muy agradable, moderna, con ventanas grandes que te conectan con la calle.
