The staff were friendly, and spoke good English. They have a very good breakfast. There was a relaxed vibe with interesting animal themed interior design. The staircases are steep and the rooms need to be repainted at some point. Overall, I liked the place and would come back here again.

Great location and wonderful breakfast

We stayed here for four nights and had a great experience. It was a short walk to the nearest bus stop, the Martinitoren, the Forum, restaurants, small shops, and there is a grocery store practically across the street. The breakfast spread is amazing, with hot food, pastries galore, and even champagne! Hot coffee and tea are available throughout the day with their self-service machines. I can't say enough about the friendly staff who treated us so kindly and always with a smile. The hotel is very old, but has been remodeled recently. You may notice that those are real zebra heads mounted in the entryway, but there is a positive story about them. They actually died naturally at the zoo, and instead of feeding them to the lions, the zoo taxidermied them and sold them as a fundraiser. I definitely will stay here the next time we visit Groningen.

A nice stay in Gronnigen

Stayed here with my tour group the night of October 8. The main building of the hotel is over 300 years old, and this hotel screams character. Some of the stairs are quite steep, but have no fear, they have elevators. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Rooms felt a bit spartan but were very comfortable. Bathroom had a tub and a seperate shower stall. The fixtures reminded me of my grandmothers home. The breakfast was very good and well worth the price. If I were to travel to Gronnigen I would stay here again. Lots of places to eat nearby if you dont want to dine at the hotel. Underground parking is a short walk from the hotel.

The primary reason for my negative review is the fact the hotel was suppose to refund the first night of my stay due to the Train Stoppage in Amsterdam making it IMPOSSIBLE to go from Amsterdam to Groningen. I spoke with an agent and they advised me I would get credit for the first night. This did not happen. They lied. Even Expedia could not assist me. Everytime we tried to reach someone at the hotel, that person was not it.

Cleanliness was excellent, service was exceptional as was the food.
Only problem that I had was the stairs, which were steeper than we are used to in the UK, and the steps were shallower. No problem going up but had to be really careful coming back down. This was obviously due to the age of the building, so wouldn't change a thing.

Very unique property built out of an old estate home, with all of the rooms being individually decorated and shaped differently adds a lot of character to the place. We enjoyed our time spent here and although the COVID restrictions meant that certain amenities were not available, the staff was friendly and helpful. We would stay here again as it was very centrally located and provided easy access to walking around all of Groningen.

As good as always

This was our third time at Schimmelpenninck, so needless to say we love it here! Breakfast was as delicious as we remembered it, Jacuzzi as relaxing as we remembered it. We did notice that here and there, over the years, the hotel could do with a few touch-ups (lick of paint, tightening a few screws in the furniture, perhaps new pillows - all little things). We'll definitely stay here again. It's amazing how quiet the hotel is, even if it's on a busy street. It's a great location for shopping, dining and close to the station and the fabulous Groninger museum.

The Hotel is a classic, and all personel very helpful and friendly. Only downside is that they messed up my laundry(badly) What was worse though, despite promising that \"Management would contact me\" about my ruined items, no one bothered. Very disappointing that they have not yet (1 month later)

very shabby chic! room 8 should be banned!

Please do not accept room 8, especially as i paid for a deluxe room........it is awful like a jail. there are better rooms in external annex building. The hotel decor is shabby chic......but to be honest it is very much more shabby! tv in room 8 is from 1980 and does not work either! why is it still there gathering dust? On the plus side breakfast room is great with plenty of vert tasty crosiants and breads as well as sausages etc. this was very good! Location is very central for restaurants in the city too!

Taste the history

Always a pleasure to stay in the Schimmelpenninck Huys, the hotel breathes the rich history it has seen in the past decades and everywhere is something to see which makes it worthwhile to wander around in the hotel. Although not part of the hotel, the \"kelder bar\" (cellar bar) is cosy and intimate and is certainly worth a visit after a night out or long business day before you hop into your comfortable hotel bed.

Traditional hotel in a noisy city

The hotel gave me the wrong entrance code of the parking lot and when i called the hotel I got a standard message. So i had to wait till one of the other cars drove in and i could follow. The second day in my part of the hotel the WiFi was not working. At first they did not want to take action until more people were going to complain about it. On the positive site: the chef made me daily an excellent omelette and the bar has no closing time.

Character hotel in the middle of Groningen

Friendly and helpful staff. This place has a lot of character! The downside for me on this visit was the room - although clean and very spacious, faced a back wall so was permanently dark with hardly any natural light. Since it was August, it was very warm with hardly any fresh air coming through the narrow window and no air-con. A fan was provided and this helped a little. Otherwise we loved the hotel- it is full of character and very Dutch! I would stay here again , and ask for a differently located room!

My wife and I stayed for two nights and had a good room. I had booked another two nights for my wife alone, as I had to go somewhere else; she was put into a tiny, miserable room, like the cleaners' cupboard, although the rate was the same as we paid for the double (and only one breakfast!)

Gem of a hotel close to town centre

This a lovely, quirky traditional hotel, with well furnished and comfortable rooms. The staff are very helpful and the breakfast each môrning is delicious, especially with the hotels home baked bread from its inhouse bakery. I would highly recommend the hotel for a comfortable and relaxing break.

Very horrible laundry and check out experience.

Having sent my delicate laundry for cleaning (major mistake!), not only was it not dry-cleaned or ironed, they made a whole in the middle of my blouse. Then they, of course, denied it. Then they said they would only compensate me by not having to pay 3-4 euro (its cleaning price). Finally they realized that that was totally unfair, and said I didn't have to pay the 18 euros of the entire laundry (still much less than the cost of the blouse). But THEN they made me pay 25 euro for a one hour late check out, without having told me beforehand that they would charge.

Disappointing accommodations

We stayed at Hotel Schimmelpenninck Huys in Groningen for two nights. Although the hotel staff were good and seemed efficient, our room was extremely disappointing. The twin bed linens were very good quality and clean however the beds themselves were not comfortable. It felt like a mattress topper had been added in hopes to improve an otherwise sad mattress. The bathroom was clean and plenty of soap and toilette paper were provided, however, the shower curtain was mouldy The wall to wall carpeting in the main room was filthy and appeared to cover a floor which was in great need of repair or replacement. The curtains were very old and in very bad repair, due to possible sun damage. The material of the small window curtain was worn through at the folds. As a result when the curtains were closed there were gaping holes. The only way to fix the room's very bad deficiencies is a complete refit of the room.

Thankfully breakfast was tasty with plenty choice. The location of the hotel was perfect for walking to the various venues within the city. Groningen is a delightful city and my husband and I would happily return, but not to the Hotel Schemmelpinninck Huys

Old Fashioned Charm

This hotel is obviously a well established \"old\" hotel in the town centre. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was brilliant, so much to choose from, breads, pastries, cheeses, etc. Plus full cooked and cereals etc. A good spread of food to start the day. The room was clean and spacious. Less appealing was that there was no view from our room - just looked onto the fire escape and a wall. Also the walls were pretty thin, so when I had an afternoon rest it seemed terribly noisy, lots of doors banging and heavy footsteps. However when bedtime came around, it was quiet... lots of obviously considerate people also staying at the hotel! The hotel was set around a court yard... so some rooms must have had views. The over all feel of the place was of a once grand building, but now a bit faded and shabby round the edges, which is no bad thing. I much prefer this kind of place than the clinical, sparse, characterless modern hotels you find. We only stayed in Groningen for one night and this hotel added to the flavour of the place and the great time myself and my best friend had there. I would recommend it, it felt local and part of the town, a great experience.

In need of major refurbishment

I was staying in the annex at the back. This part of the hotel had a faint smell of sewage. The room had a faint smell of turpentine. The corridors and staircases were dirty and worn out. The room was very large but uncomfortable with two beds that were so loose on their wheels that they did not stay in place and rolled about when you moved on them. The mattress was too soft like it was worn out and needed to be replaced. The TV was so old that the buttons on the remote where so worn that yo could hardly see what they are for. There are no coffee and tea making facilities in the room.
The annex backs on to a street where you have very noisy students coming past during the night. On the other hand, the breakfast in the morning was really good with a good choice of fresh bread.

The water in the shower and taps were freezing cold on both days. The stairs are extremely steep, which is difficult for elderley people. The windows in the room were cracked and all the rooms look tired and need to be repainted. However, the hotel has a lovely old world atmosphere and friendly staff in a great location. I would certainly come back here and would reccomend it to others.

When choosing our hotel in Groningen our priorities were dog friendly and near the railway station. We were very happy that Hotel Schimmelpennick Huys provideded these things and more. Staff were excellent, the rooms (we had 2 seperate stays) were clean and the beds comfortable. We liked the very individual style of the rooms, our least favourite was the room overlooking the street at the side of the hotel, but only because of the noise during the night, and again in early morning, not something the hotel can control. We had a very good lunch in the sunny courtyard, and one evening we had the really excellent 3 course chefs menu. The breakfast was also very good, there was a choice of home made breads, and the omelette was good. We would definitely stay here again.

Very Disappointing

When we checked in, we were not given the room that we had booked and paid for. Instead we were placed in a tiny room with adequate ventilation. I reviewed my booking email and took it to reception, who stated that the information sent through by the web was not the same as hers. Upon a consult with her manager, our room was changed however renovations were being undertaken and we were awoken at 6am to drills and hammers. Hotels have a duty of care to inform guests that renovations are occurring so that the guests have the choice of booking elsewhere. I was not happy with this hotel at all.

The lovely Hotel with an unpronouncable name!

This is the second time we've stayed in this quaint hotel, two minute's walk from the Grote Market. Beautiful rooms (recommend spending a few € extra and reserving a room with a Jacuzzi bath), lovely breakfasts and tranquil patio/beer garden. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. The hotel wine bar (when you find it in the cellar!) offers plenty of choice with a knowledgeable barman.

Only problem was that there are no lifts and since the building is pretty old it has stairs that are too small to be comfortably get a foot hold. Fast free Internet and very good breakfast with built in bakery. Because I had to fly out early & paid for breakfast the hotel made a packed lunch which was delicious.

The hotel was fine and conveniently located. Parking, as everywhere, was difficult and expensive.
Our only wish was that there was opportunity to have a small or a la carte breakfast instead of the 17 euro buffet. We were able to next door to the bakery near by for coffee however.

Although our original room was lovely and clean, the location on an all night party street meant a sleepless first night. The staff were extremely helpful in moving us to a quiet room in another part of the hotel-an upgrade-for the remainder of our stay. Lovely, historic and central – though not perfect

It would be perhaps unfair to dismiss an undoubtedly friendly, characterful and well located hotel purely because the promised WiFi didn't work. But sadly I had booked this particular hotel for a two-night stay – squeezed in between Berlin, Lake Balaton, London, Brighton and then Budapest – purely around the fact that WiFi would be available here. My plan was to work around the region by day and rely upon WiFi here by night. In the end, I lost work, and money, because I couldn't do what I needed to do at the place I was staying in. Though I pointed out the problem immediately upon arrival, otherwise friendly staff seemed to take an eon doing anything about it. As I was checking out, 36 hours later, I was told that the problem lay with the server. There seemed to be no sense of urgency to get the problem pinpointed and fixed. The sauna, promised when booking on this site, wasn't available – I think it may have been more a case of someone offering in-room treatments rather than a sauna room. Other more minor complaints: only one powerpoint (of two) worked in the room, and water temperature takes a long while for the taps to register, so you're waiting ages for the water to turn properly hot or cool down. Plus points: downtown location excellent and if you're here for a romantic getaway, the historic setting and courtyard restaurant should make for a memorable stay.

The staff was very kind and helpful. The room was small but fine. Easy walking distance to the square/market and the university, and also walkable to the station. The breakfast was alright; if you have time to eat elsewhere, you may want to opt out of it. I don't understand why the shower isn't somehow separated from the rest of the bathroom, though I often end up with that question when in Europe. Also, the curtain wraps around your body when you turn on the shower.

Wir hatten von einer Suite für das Geld mehr erwartet. Wir waren noch nie in einer so kleinen Suite, war nur etwas größer als ein Standard Zimmer. Ausstattung und Zustand waren auch nicht gut. Nur der Whirlpool wusste zu überzeugen. Wir hatten mehr erwartet und wollten einen besonderen Tag verbringen.

Das Hotel ist in einem wunderschönen alten Haus und sehr gut vom Bahnhof und der Innenstadt aus zu erreichen. Ich musste mehrmals lange warten um meinen Schlüssel abzugeben oder wieder zu bekommen denn die Rezeption war zwar 24 Stunden besetzt aber es war nicht 24 Stunden jemand da. Das Einzelzimmer war sehr sehr klein und das Fenster nicht zu öffnen. Außerdem lag es zum Hof und dort war bis tief in die Nacht Lautstärke und Trubel der anderen Dachterrassen.
Bei einem Preis von 83 € für eine Nacht hätte ich mir etwas mehr Komfort gewünscht.

Goede centrale ligging, personeel vriendelijk en correct, ontbijt en diner prima. Veel trapjes, drempels en opstapjes en losse en ongelijke tegels en bestrating. Hier alsmede de trapbekleding is nogal wat onderhoud nodig. Het doet helaas afbreuk aan de totale beleving in zo'n statig oud gebouw met dito chique naam.

Hotel und Einrichtung sind nicht mehr neu, haben aber gerade dadurch auch ihren Charme. Leider lässt an einigen Stellen die Sauberkeit zu wünschen übrig. Das Personal ist durchweg sehr freundlich aber nicht immer ausreichend besetzt. Für ältere Menschen sind einige Treppen im Haus eine Herausforderung, mit Gepäck sogar ein Hindernis. Lage ist Top! Wer auf etwas verwinkelte und plüschige Hotels abfährt ist hier richtig. Preis und Leistung stimmen.
