Right in the heart of the party

This was a surprisingly good hotel. Ample water pressure and plenty of hot water for the shower, modern fixtures, etc. The service staff were very good/attentive, excellent English. Convenient location near the cathedral and the University hangouts. There is a big parking lot nearby, but I didn't have a car; the hotel is convenient (10 minute walk) from the train station. Perhaps it isn't this rowdy all the time, but I was there during Euro Cup (and the Netherlands made it to the semis) so there was a lot of late-night noise from the pub patios nearby, up to 3am both nights. It didn't bother me (I'm a sound sleeper) but maybe something to consider if you are in Holland during a major athletic event!

Central Groningen perfect stay

The reception on arrival was great and the service was excellent - by offering a drink and explain how the hotel operates. The hall (incl. breakfast room) has a home-like feel and has boardgames displayed. You can also play pool in the hall whilst having a drink. Also, you get two access cards to the room which is spacey, modern and clean. No noise was heard during our stay.

lovely but some room for improvement

Hotel location is great, the breakfast was fine too although as a Ceoliac it was a little limited but i didn't starve ! Room was spacious and clean but lighting was poor given the colour scheme was very black. bed was comfy but bathroom smelled a lot of sewerage. DO NOT get a room on the street side if you are a light sleeper like i am as you will get very little sleep with the noise. Room was cold even with the heating on for 3 hrs and very noisy - shame these little things were like they were because the staff are super friendly and professional throughout the hotel and very polite and mannerly.

We were very pleased with our stay at City Hotel Groningen. The staff was super friendly and helpful. The room was clean and the bathroom quite large. The breakfast was fantastic. The best hotel buffet breakfast we have ever had.
My only request would be to put a sheet on the bed under the duvet. The duvet was extremely warm and in summer we found it too warm. Otherwise no complaints whatsoever. Would definitely recommend staying here.

I've stayed here several times before but it's standards have dropped. As an expedia VIP member I did not receive my usual welcome, nor was I given a room upgrade, nor given the free drinks advertized during my stay. The staff are friendly enough, my room was clean but small, the hotel has upgraded the checkin area, but singularly the breakfast service has dropped precipitously. They ran out of juice, cheese and meat on two of my days ( I chose not to eat on the third). I was hounded by different staff for my room number. If they paid half the attention to replenishing breakfast items as they do patrolling guests they would not have these problems. This is not rocket science it is a management issue. I will choose another hotel on my next visit.

A nice hotel unfortunately being revamped when we visited. Staff seemed more concerned with that and emails than customer service, although they were always polite. The hotel is in a great location but needs to tell you 'parking available' needs prior reservation. Excellent for short walks to city's best sights. The alternative nearby Q Parking was very expensive and you had to pay a full 2 days even when we were 8 hours off the full 48.

Had a comfy bed, clean and well-featured bathroom, friendly staff, and good city center location with much to do and many transport links.

The outwards-facing windows were at the top-and-bottom of the wall, and a little small, so would've liked a little more natural light in the room during the day.

During our stay, the hotel was being refurbished so there was construction noise throughout the day. Facilities being constructed looked nice though.

Air conditioning in the room seemed hard-coded to turn off at 01:00am, which often meant waking up in the heat to turn it back on.

My stay was great. Very friendly staff and useful room. Two tips for improving. For ecofriendliness a message you can hang on your door that cleaning is not necessary that day. I also missed a mini fridge in the room (mostly because due to covid restrictions it was not possible to eat out).

The room was nice and cosy, comfortable bed, nice bathroom with great shower. It was great to have tea and coffee making facilities in the room as well as being able to get free drinks in the lobby. The staff were friendly and helpful too. The only slight negative was that fast food garbage and dirty cups were piled up at the end of the hallway, which in its self is something that in corona times with people eating in their rooms and getting food delivered is to be expected, but the fact that this was left there for at least two days before being removed and having to walk past it each time we went to and from the room was a bit unsightly, but apart from this we enjoyed our stay and will be happy to stay here again when next in Groningen

The hotel and staff is really nice and the stay was enjoyable. The only issue was there are rooms located behind the building which face directly into a wall, that can be a bit depressing when all day you are in between 4 walls and dont see any day light or outside view.

Perfect stay among friends.

We stayed 21 nights there. We booked the basic room and it was good. No refrigerator but free coffee and tea. Clean and serviced every day with towel replacement as needed. Breakfast at an extra cost but well worth it if you are hungry because it is a lot of tasty food. Well situated within the city, close to bus stood and restaurants and shops. Great for just sitting outside on the bench sipping coffee or cocktail and taking in the atmosphere. The best part is the staff. They were the best and friendliest and most attentive to every detail and responsive to all needs and queries. All of them. Even if the hotel was full. I shouldn’t name any but one of them even came to say goodbye at the taxi outside as we were leaving . That was so touching and left an amazing sense of belonging. Therefore we will have to go back there again next time.

The staff was super friendly and helpful sharing tips of where to eat and go out in town. Groningen itself is a lot smaller than I expected, so you can really see everything in basically a day! Worth the trip, especially if only for the Goninger Museum which has great exhibits.

I’ve stayed at the city hotel in Groningen several times. I’ve always had a good experience. The rooms are very comfortable the shower is clean and very modern. Rooms have hairdryers and safes to store valuables. I’ve never had breakfast as it is on the pricey side. There are so many places to eat breakfast lunch and evening meal reasonably. You could or be disappointed.

It was lovely! The staff were great except for the lady (I think of Asian descent) who was working the reception late on Thursday evening. She was terrible. Threw my key at me and wouldn't even look at me. Horrible girl. But the other ladies made up for it. The others were very sweet and helpful.

This place is great. The location is perfect (walkable to the main areas of the city), the rooms are clean, and the staff are lovely. When we came back hours after we checked out to pick up our bags (during a heat wave), they invited us to stay in the AC lobby until our train and gave us popsicles.

It was a very pleasant stay. The hotel is located on the outskirts of the old town, about 20 minutes walk from the railway station and 5 minutes from the Martinitoren.
The room was clean, and the wifi was working well. The lobby/dining area has a nice finish and there is a pleasant open fireplace that adds to the quality of the hotel.

Small damp corner room

The room was tiny you could just about walk around the bed but worst of all it was extremely damp - our clothing went damp it was awful.
I firstly complained to the receptionist on the first day and she said it was normal for the size of the rooms, but it was not we saw housekeeping in the other rooms they were much bigger.
Then when I complained again the next day they did offer to move us just 10 hours short of the end of our stay and we were rushing out for our daughters graduation so we did not have time to move.
But quite frankly they said they had 70 bedrooms on the property but I can’t believe it was full but why put people in such a small room, I asked for a reduction in what I had paid and they informed me Expedia had my money and they told me to complain to Expedia and try and get my money back from them

The city hotel is pretty much located in the city centre of Groningen so location is great. There's no parking at the hotel but there's a parking garage not far away that guests can use at a somewhat discounted rate. Staff at the hotel was very kind and helpful and they gave us some great tips for day trips and local restaurants. Room was nice and clean. We had a great stay!

Fantastic welcome and the downstairs was very modern but when you went up to the rooms the corridors and rooms seem a bit dated(I think they are in the process of improving things) having said that the bed was the most comfortable one I have slept in and wish I could have bought it home along with the pillows,air conditioning was great as it was hot during our stay, the breakfast was lovely and staff were brilliant & helpful, would defiantly stay again.

The staff at this hotel is exceptionally kind-hearted and helpful. We arrived late at night without any luggage due to a tight connection. The staff assuaged our anxiety, provided us with a few amenities to tide us over, and recommended a few stores to buy staples. The hotel rooms are small like most European hotels, but well-designed for a traveler's needs. It is adjacent to several nice cafes and restaurants but the rooms are very quiet and suitable for sleeping.

Overall the hotel was clean and quiet. The staff members were all helpful and considerate. Anyone with claustrophobia should avoid this hotel because of the lack of natural light in the rooms. This was not a problem for me; however, the artificial lighting was very poor and low wattage and a few more bright lights in each room would make a great difference. This darkness was my only negative. I did not have breakfast today included in my package but it should have been. 20 Euros for the buffet was too much extra cash in doing the cost benefit analysis with a grocery store nearby! All in all a solid and satisfactory three star experience with no surprises and easy walking distance to the diwntiwn core and canals.

Cons: Rooms getting a bit tired now, bed wasn't particularly comfortable, shower had uneven temperature.

I would return again, as there's not a huge selection in Groningen and it's not a bad hotel. Could just use a little improving.

Great location, walking distance to everything, lots of restaurants nearby. A few things were lacking, no teacups, plastic glasses wrapped in more plastic, very unsustainable, disappointing. Face washers would have been nice and towels a bit threadbare. We were told hotel was in changeover of name hopefully new owners will address these points. When you are away from home for a period of time little things make a big difference in comfort. Lighting in bathroom was terrible the shower was like a cave. We did receive an upgrade, it did make me think what else might have been lacking in original room If we hadn’t received this. 2 luggage racks would be handy for 2 people.
