Had a fab stay - staff friendly at check in and the room was excellent. We stayed in 21 which had a four poster bed and plenty of space - it was wonderfully traditional and added to the stay perfectly. There is plenty of parking at the hotel and breakfast was good value with lots of choice. We stayed for the racing and it was an ideal location - would definitely recommend and stay again.

The new AI chat bot the hotel chain is using is absolutely terrible.It was very frustrating to use and a number of attempts were made to make a recommended table reservation .This proved imposdible and so annoying , time wasting and ineffective that it may make me think twice about staying there again

The hotel was clean throughout and the staff were polite and helpful. The whole place needs renovating though. Our room, especially the bathroom, was dated and felt damp. It was cold in the mornings and we couldn't get the radiator to come on. There is also not much sound proofing throughout the hotel and we could hear every noise inside and out. The location is fantastic though, convenient for getting into Cheltenham without being in the middle of everything and the view is amazing. With some modernisation this hotel could be brilliant but at the minute it is just a good base for Cheltenham if you don't want to stay in the city intself.

This place appears to be very popular, a great looking place from the outside with great views.
When we arrived there was no one at reception, which was expected as the booking stated there was no reception despite there being one.
We went to the bar area where the youngster behind the bar said he would get his manager to check us in up at reception, so we returned there and didn't have to wait long for his arrival, this process was straight forward and it wasn't long before we went to our room.
The room was ok, pretty much as you would expect from a standard double.
We had a table booked so went back to the bar area to be seated. Again we were greeted by a youngster who showed us to our table where he asked for our drinks order.
We noticed at the bar that there was a 0% beer on draft so we asked for a pint of that, only to be told that they don't do 0% on draft. I corrected the youngster and we duly received our drinks and had our food order taken.
After waiting some time the young lad who took our order returned and said \"sorry there appears to have been some confusion, have you had your starter yet?\" as all of our cutlery was still on the table clearly we hadn't!
When the starters did arrive one of them was wrong and at one point we had 3 starters on the table. Rest of the meal was ok, although the fondant was a failure. Glasses on the table were disgusting, which makes you wonder about the ones behind the bar.

For the price we paid we were very disappointed with our room, although the pub and restaurant seemed nice enough.
On a positive note the room seemed clean, and the bed was comfortable. Other than that, however, the room was very basic and very hot. There was no drawer space; walls were bare; no provision for bags; the hot water tap was dangerously hot so could not be used and the cold tap sprayed water everywhere. The stack of cardboard boxes outside our window and the filthy road sign were not an attractive addition to the otherwise great view!
It was good to be able to open the window a little, but the heated towel rail could not be turned off which made it impossible to cool the room to a comfortable temperature, even with the fan provided.
We understand that prices in this area are higher than elsewhere, but we felt this stay was very poor value for the price charged. We would not choose to stay here again.

Rising Sun was perfect for our one night. We are at the tail end of a 30 day trip and chose Cheltenham because it was close to Sudely Castle and Gardens. The staff was friendly, the room was clean and the bathroom was fine. Bar and restaurant were great and the views were INCREDIBLE. If back in the area I would stay again.

Rooms are clean and functional but nothing to write home about, with bathrooms not dissimilar to the toilets in a school 20 years ago. Nevertheless, a good night's rest and great location if you're playing golf and the nearby Cleeve Hill golf course.

The room we were in did not have AC, but there was a fan. We were there in May so it wasn't real warm, so just be aware of that, if you are there in summer.

This is by far one of the worst hotels i have stopped in. Check in was very abrupt. Got to room, toilet hadnt been cleaned and had faeces marks up both sides of the toilet. Room smellled very damp and had brown marks all over the carpet. Freezing cold, asked.for a portable heater and they didnt have one. Slept in my clothes and hat as was so cold. Beds very uncomfortable and one had a choc under it to stop it rolling about as the room was very uneven. Not very good for someone not good with balance!Massive dog roaming the hotel! Bags of rubbish left outside three rooms all the time we were there. Will definitely not be returning. Didnt have breakfast so cant comment on the restaurant

Not the most expensive hotel in the area but you get what you pay for. Comfortable bed and friendly enough staff. Paid extra for breakfast but didn’t realise that it started at 0800 and I had to leave at 0730. No refund offered but was offered some croissants if I wanted them. My mistake not theirs. Probably wouldn’t stay here again as I found a nice hotel five miles further up the road and only £30 more than the stay here.

We were there on a Sunday and bank holiday Monday so there was no bus service but the walk to and from Winchcombe is fabulous.

Arrive late evening, was welcomed by the reception staff. Everything about the stay was explained. Room was very cosy. Short walk down the corridor to bar area. Drinks are reasonably priced as is the food. Food was fantastic so was breakfast well worth adding on when booking. Tea, Coffee, Milk and biscuits also supplied within the room price. Overall fantastic value for money and wouldn’t hesitate to stay again in the future.

The rising sun is a lovely place to stay and would recommend anyone to do so. Although I'm pretty sure people have already at some point stayed here as it seems to be a regular for the Cheltenham races. The breakfast and food was out of this world presentation and quality was amazing and the price was all reasonable for the area this is located. They could quite easily charge 4-5 pound more and there would be still no grievances.

I booked this hotel via Expedia. Five minutes after doing so, I realized I had made a mistake. I had booked the correct dates but the wrong location. I made many calls to Expedia and the hotel direct to try to cancel the booking, but I couldn't get a refund. The stay was still months away, but that didn't make any difference.
After arriving in the UK, I realized that Greene King is a chain. They could have offered me a different hotel in my desired location. I would have been happy to pay the difference.
As we checked in, the manager inexplicably dropped the f bomb. It just slipped out. It wasnt a stressful situation, it was just a natural part of her language.
I bought my son a drink from the bar. When he asked for ice, the person serving said they had 'run out'.
From this experience I learned to never book a hotel that doesn’t have a reasonable cancelation policy. It's an indication of poor management.
I will never use Expedia again either.

As we checked in, the manager inexplicably dropped the f bomb. It just slipped out. It wasnt a stressful situation, it was just a natural part of her language.
I bought my son a drink from the bar. When he asked for ice, the person serving said they had 'run out'.
From this experience I learned to never book a hotel that doesn’t have a reasonable cancelation policy. It's an indication of poor management.
I will never use Expedia again either.

Lovely views. Shame about the scruffy windows in the room and restaurant that spoilt it. Staff were great but too few, particularly at breakfast. Evening food wasn’t the best. Hotel not for people with wheelchairs or limited ability due to the number of stairs to negotiate to get around. Otherwise ok for a short stay over.

Rising Sun is well situated and spacious. It has a glorious outlook and great restaurant. Staff are congenial and helpful.

Initially reception and room okay although room definately needs updating. Bar staff and dinner okay....this review however changes dramatically upon breakfast. Considering the number of residents only 2 staff employed for breakfast and in our case from the time we sat down till ee left was 1 hour and that was just for english breakfast. The breakfast when it arrived was awful. Everything luke warm. Very fatty bacon, insipid looking sausage, tomato green and raw, blackpudding not cooked through and the toast (one small piece) arri ed on the same plate. Because there were only 2 staff it took ages to mention the above and was then offered another breakfast...i dont think so. Asked for more toast which eventually came piled up on a plate...have they not heard of toast racks. So unfortunately if asked how our stay was we only remember because of the awful breakfast.

Ate in the restaurant on Friday evening. My partner had scampi as main course and I had steak and ale pie. My partner spent the two and a half days constantly needing to go to the toilet and I had an upset stomach on Saturday. Reported directly to the hotel earlier and the general manager has agreed to refund only the cost of scampi meal. Given that the weekend was somewhat spoiled I would think that as a minimum gesture of upholding first class customer service the full cost ot this meal should have been refunded.

This hotel has a good location near Cheltenham and close to the Cotswold Way. It is a comfortable hotel and can be a busy venue when functions are taking place.

The Rising Sun Hotel was clean, comfortable and in an ideal place for exploring the cotswolds.
The only disappointment was the breakfast.
I decided to have a continental breakfast but was told
that there were no croissants left.
