Everything was unreal! When we arrived exhausted after hours of travelling our room key and details were all laid out on the desk ready for us to head straight up. The rooms view was unbelievable and much appreciated. The breakfast was perfect and staff friendly and helpful. Couldn’t fault anything.

There's no doubt about it, the location and view of the mountains from our apartment was exceptional and that is what we paid for. I'm fairly sure that some of the rooms had been upgraded, but not our room. The bathroom door was frosted, heavy and so noisy that you had to hang on to it to open and close it. But it didn't end there...there was zero water pressure and very cold water. I had to take a bath instead of a shower so that I could get some lukewarm water to sit in. This was changed after I complained about it...and then it was scalding hot. The room needs major upgrading. I noticed that the apartment next to us had carpet on the floor which this place absolutely needed. And super tiny. I didn't even bother unpacking my suitcase even though we were scheduled to stay for 5 nights. We ended up leaving a day early. Please note that most of the places in Grindelwald will have a good view of the Eiger if they are on the side facing the mountains...you don't need to climb a hill to get that view.

On the positive side...Carolina and staff...they were wonderful! The breakfast was excellent. I can't say enough good things about how efficient, helpful and kind they were. I would return if Carolina and her coworkers were there, but I'd ask for a different room.

First the main picture of a beautiful lake and mountain view is not from or near the hotel. The hotel is located on top of a hill without direct car access. Need to park and then hike 30 degree uphill for 5 minutes to reach the door.

One of the heater missing control knob but fixed the following day. There are sharp edge at bed and easy to get hurt in this tight room. The toilet bowl is right next to the shower drain pan that the corner of the drain pan make it uncomfortable to sit down. It is hard to describe though. The breakfast staff is nice and friendly. But the location and property do noy justiy the cost.

Lovely stay at the Chalet!

We only stayed one night and it was perfect! Our key was waiting at the front desk, lovely room, good size, comfortable and with a balcony and view! Breakfast starts at 7:30, and it was perfect too, with a lovely view! Fresh bread, trouts, local cheeses and meats! A wonderful stay at a chalet!

We drove, there’s a small parking and then you need to walk a little uphill with the bags to reach the hotel. Totally worth it!

The staff at Sonnenberg are so friendly and helpful. The room was a little cramped but the shared cozy space including deck with fantastic views helped! Breakfast was delicious and the location while up a steep hill, was a welcome quiet change from the busy crowded town.
Highly recommend this place because of the staff and homey feel.

The property has a great location and incredible views! The only thing to keep in mind is that it is that there is a steep walk to the hotel from the train station and if you have heavy luggage, then it takes some cardio strength to carry it to the hotel. But once to reach there, it is worth it. The hotel is quite nice, staff is very friendly and helpful and the views of the Grindelwald valley from the hotel are amazing!

A must stay in Grindelwald

You have to make this your stay for your Grindelwald trip!! The coziest hotel with the sweetest owners and most breathtaking views. It was the perfect location, only a 7 min walk from the train station, but up on the hill enough so it felt more peaceful and serene than the main street of town. I only stayed two nights, but they came and freshened up my room anyway during the day, changed the bed/towels etc. complimentary breakfast that included a buffet spread, made to order eggs, and all sorts of coffee. Little details in the lobby and room just provided a sense of home and comfort. Beautiful yard with lounge chairs that overlooks the mountains and town. Only 1 small hill to get up, but absolutely doable even with luggage. And it’s so worth it!! Truly felt like a dream staying here.

My wife and I had a fantastic stay at Hotel Sonnenberg! Our room in the chalet building was gorgeous with an incredible balcony and view of Grindelwald and the alps! The hotel is just up the hill from the train station which makes the walk up worth it to get a view better than any hotel in the valley! Breakfast was excellent with fresh bread and pastries baked right there in Grindelwald! The staff were lovely and George even coordinated a bottle of Champagne in our room to celebrate my wife’s birthday. Couldn’t recommend more!

Very pleasant hotel with excellent views. The complimentary breakfast has many delicious choices, and the staff were always cheerful and accommodating. Very comfortable and relaxing sitting area next to the breakfast room. The only downside is that there is a steep climb from the parking area to the hotel. The staff, however, were very helpful transporting luggage to and fro. Altogether a wonder stay.

The most amazing view!

This small hotel is one of the most amazing hotels I have ever stayed. I have to admit, the steep walk to the hotel will make you rethink your fitness level ... but ... the view from our room was simply to die for! The owners (a very nice couple) not only upgraded our room for no particular reason, they also provided us with information on nearby attractions. The room was clean and roomy. Breakfast was included and was also fabulous. Great variety and extremely delicious. I would give this hotel my highest recommendation.

This hotel has amazing views from your room or the balcony. With amazing views comes a little bit of a steep walk to this hotel, but totally doable and worth it. Could use a little bit extra cleaning in the main dining areas, but was pleased with room cleanliness. Breakfast was ok, unfortunately learned on the last day you can order eggs which would’ve been awesome to know before. A very Swiss and cozy feel! Would recommend

Lovely hotel and lovely staff but if you don’t enjoy a walk up hill from town or stairs (there’s no lift) then probably best to choose one of the numerous hotels that are in town and a short walk from the train station. This hotel is quieter than others and has a breathtaking view but after one night we were glad to have booked at one of the more convenient hotels on the Main Street because after a day of hiking there was no way we wanted to trudge up and down to get to our hotel and then once again to go for dinner and back.

The stay was okey but could be much better. Disappointed with no AC at all or at least a fan. It was super hot in the lobby and in my room as well. As a solution the staff suggested to open the windows to get some air. The windows don't have a mosquito net so all the bugs and flies were coming as soon as you open the window. Another big disappointment that there is no iron in the hotel for the guests.

Love this hotel! It was clean, furnished beautifully, and the view was INCREDIBLE. But be warned: it is up a *very* steep hill, you may want to reconsider if your elderly or have a physical impairment.
Another warning I wish we knew: No one staffs the hotel after 6pm so if you're arriving late you need to let them know ahead of time. We got there around 10pm and were locked out for over half an hour. The only place they list this is in the small print if you click the hyperlink under further information. I really wish the hotel would make this more obvious, like in the email they send you a few days before your stay. (I swear they give you every other detail except the fact that you have to check in before 6pm).

But those two notes aside, the hotel was amazing and I would highly recommend it. The breakfast was really nice too! I would absolutely stay here again. It's definitely a little off the beaten path, but thats why the view is so amazing, totally worth it if you can make it up the hill with your luggage!

Wow! This hotel exceeded my expectations! I loved how cozy it felt, how clean it was, and how easy check in was. I had to check in late and they did an amazing job in making my check in seamless.
The breakfast is great with an amazing view. The overall view from the hotel is incredible! I love that it is higher up than the town. Do not bring big luggage though! The walk up was definitely steep at times (the only negative).

I booked the superior twin room, which can see the Eiger from the balcony. The view is extraordinary! The staff is very helpful and nice!
To friendly remind, you have climb up long steep slope to go to the hotel, but you can keep uour luggages at Hotel Derby next to Grinderwald tram station after checking out.

What a lovely place to stay. The mountain view from both the bedroom and breakfast rooms were fantastic. As the hotel has an elevated position above the town the view is uninterrupted...certainly worth a little extra for a mountain view room with a balcony. The room in the chalet was atmospheric, warm and cosy and very clean.
The hotel's elevated position does mean you have a steep path to walk up so a reasonable level of mobility is required...we were there in the snow and it was manageable but icy in places so good footwear is a good idea.
The hotel proprietor was most affable and the staff were very pleasant and helpful.
I highly recommend this hotel for its quality, ambience and the views of the mountains, and the Eiger in particular, are simply stunning. From the balcony we watched skiers and sledgers coming down the floodlit pistes every evening whilst having a beer.
The hotel is very conveniently located for the town and railway station and hence trips up the mountain on the Jungfrau rack and pinion railway.
If coming by train from one of the airports don't forget to buy a Swiss Rail half price pass as this gets you half price on the Jungfrau 'Top of Europe' railway and on the main cabin lifts as well as from the airport itself.
We can not wait to go back to Hotel Sonnenberg again both in the summer and winter.

the only reason i won't give this hotel a 5 out of 5 rating is if you have a heart condition, leg or hip issues you don't want to stay here as the walk from the parking lot to the hotel is easily 250 meters up a 10+ degree hill. No close parking or assistance getting up the hill..it was not a good experience for my companion. Hotel is good, staff friendly and room was nice.

The condition of the hotel is a bit old, the blanket itself turns yellow and with stains which make me feels uncomfortable. Also, there were a lot of little insects around the room, so please be careful to choose when you concerns the above.

You also need to walk through quite a number of inclined road and there is no lift inside the building.

Other than that, the hotel staff is friendly and the breakfast is good.

The view is nice from the balcony, however the cleanliness of the accommodation is very poor. I found quite a lot of bedbugs on the blanket. I've never seen a hotel like this. And the remote control and hair dryer are very dirty. Luckily I have only spend 1 night here. And also the location yes quite convenient, but there's a big slope that needs so much strength to carry the heavy suitcase up! I found the whole experience is very disappointing, the only good thing is the view from the balcony.

The view was stunning and unforgettable. The included breakfast was a wide spread collection of deli, breads, beverages and more which made for a more than adequate meal before long days exploring Grindelwald.
