Amazing staff. Unbelievably friendly, helpful and nothing is too much for them and they look smart and very well spoken. The room was absolutely amazing, nice and clean. It's amazing how so many original features are still there. The ghost walk and the self guided tour was also fantastic. We will certainly be back as we want to do the after hours tour. This place could have been incredible. The building is unique, the concept is bold, and it genuinely has the potential to be something special. But our stay at Bodmin Jail Hotel was anything but luxurious.
We were initially given one of the more characterful rooms, and it looked promising. But that’s where the positives end.
No Sleep. No Heating. No Urgency. Within hours of settling in, the problems started. The mattress was uneven with a broken spring, and the heating in the room simply did not work. We didn’t “sleep badly.” We didn’t sleep at all. Two nights in a row we were waking up every hour, freezing cold, sore, and genuinely feeling like we’d done ten rounds in a boxing ring by morning.
If you have back or hip issues.. Avoid.
Reception tried, but there was maintenance on site. At a so-called luxury hotel.. We were told to wait. And then wait some more. Maintenance didn’t arrive the next day either. We ended up asking for three additional king duvets just to stay warm and even used one to cover the broken spring so we could lie down without pain. We spent two hours of our evening just trying to figure out how to manage the room situation.
We were offered one alternative dog-friendly room - functional heating - but completely clinical. Bright white, box-like, stripped of any of the stone or cell character that makes this hotel unique.

Great hotel , staff were friendly, rooms were clean, food was fantastic and a good little gym. Loved the vibe of the place in line with being an old prison. The in-house spooky tour in the basement was ok , but make what you want of it, probably not the best value for money but still fun/ interesting.

the whole experience was fantastic, a warm welcome by all staff. we had an issue with our heating not working in our room, an attempt was made twice to repair it but unsuccessful, we went out for Dinner and was offered another room late evening, although the offer was appreciated we felt it was to late to move. all in all a very lovely hotel and we will hopefully return soon.

Leaving aside the novelty value, this is an excellent hotel. Superbly appointed room with excellent bathroom and everything works perfectly: near-silent but efficient climate control, faultless WiFi connectivity and TV casting.
The restaurant is a treat, creative and beautifully presented menu choices and fabulous breakfast choices.
Most of all the staff made the visit special; attentive, warm, courteous and helpful.

Embarrassing hold up in check in when we got through a total of four different bank cards before their system allowed one to be used as a holding card ( there is no issues with our cards!). I checked did it need to be the card we used to book and was told no “any card is fine” when this wasn’t obviously the case. Not a great start to my husbands birthday treat. I booked dinner bed and breakfast package but there was no explanation of what the limitations were anywhere and we asked at dinner and they couldn’t tell us either but said reception would be able to tell us when we check out?! Bit late then to find how much allowance we had?! Reception huge queue checking out and one receptionist (I think the male manager) then started checking out cards that had been left of his desk rather than dealing with the people waiting in the queue - just. Doesn’t give you the impression that you really matter or he really cares. The place is beautiful and so are rooms and food but although staff were mainly polite it doesn’t give the same level of service that we have had at other similarly priced establishments

My girlfriend says room slightly dusty but I didn’t notice. A coffee machine would have been nice (rather than instant coffee). Highly recommended.

From the moment we arrived we were very impressed with how the building has been restored, both outside and inside, retaining many original features. We were given a warm welcome by the staff who were happy to share their knowledge of the building. Our room had everything we needed and, considering the walls were stone, it was spotless. We enjoyed the Champagne Bar and The Chapel (for evening meal and breakfast), all of which were excellent. The later check out gave us time to explore the building. We look forward to a further stay in the future and would highly recommend.

Absolutely loved this hotel! It was such a pleasant surprise, despite already having high expectations. We were in a dog friendly room on the ground floor and it was incredible. The history of the building is evident and we really enjoyed exploring the exterior and the areas near the restaurant.

We booked the history tour for £30 for two, which was supposed to last an hour but we were told the wrong place to meet & missed the beginning & the tour only lasted 30 minutes..had we have known this we would not have booked it..reception staff didn’t seem to know a lot about the tour arrangements…just a slight niggle but still enjoyed our stay!

The rooms were spacious, clean and well equipped. But noisey from the car park and people smoking and chatting outside our bedroom window so we were woken up late at night and early morning. The bar was full and no where to sit. The restaurant was a little soulless but good food and service. Music was depressing especially at breakfast.

Interesting place - nowhere to eat for dog owners
Rooms are nice, the breakfast is fantastic (despite cold eggs), and the building is interesting...however...
This is the second time we've stayed here mainly to break up the long journey down to West Cornwall (why else would you stay in Bodmin?!!). The rooms are very cool but starting to look rough around the edges (floor and wall scuffs etc.), but the main issue for us, with our dog, is the unfathomable decision to close the dog-friendly on-site restaurant, now a cafe that closes at 6pm. Whilst the Chapel restaurant is open every night for other guests, no dogs are allowed, so despite welcoming dogs in the rooms, if you do take your dog, you cant get an evening meal. Rocking up at 6pm on Sunday and finding this out was a bit of a bummer!
Also, having paid an extera £20 for the dog, I'd expected at least a few dog treats in the room (we had treats, bowl and dog bed last time) but this time, nothing at all.
Lastly, on check-out, I was asked if i wanted to add a 'recommended' gratuity for the cleaning staff! What hotels do this?! Having already paid over £200 for the room, i found this both bizarre are a bit rude. You can \"ask to remove this\" additonal fee, but then its you that ends up looking and feeling like a bad person. Not appreciated at all. Why not pay the staff a full wage so they dont rely on these sneaky extra \"optional\" charges?
This is the second time we've stayed here mainly to break up the long journey down to West Cornwall (why else would you stay in Bodmin?!!). The rooms are very cool but starting to look rough around the edges (floor and wall scuffs etc.), but the main issue for us, with our dog, is the unfathomable decision to close the dog-friendly on-site restaurant, now a cafe that closes at 6pm. Whilst the Chapel restaurant is open every night for other guests, no dogs are allowed, so despite welcoming dogs in the rooms, if you do take your dog, you cant get an evening meal. Rocking up at 6pm on Sunday and finding this out was a bit of a bummer!
Also, having paid an extera £20 for the dog, I'd expected at least a few dog treats in the room (we had treats, bowl and dog bed last time) but this time, nothing at all.
Lastly, on check-out, I was asked if i wanted to add a 'recommended' gratuity for the cleaning staff! What hotels do this?! Having already paid over £200 for the room, i found this both bizarre are a bit rude. You can \"ask to remove this\" additonal fee, but then its you that ends up looking and feeling like a bad person. Not appreciated at all. Why not pay the staff a full wage so they dont rely on these sneaky extra \"optional\" charges?

Simply WOW! It is a beautiful hotel….book ahead during the peak travel season to get on the guided tour. We did the self guided tour which was very good, but a great tour guide would have filled in little bits and pieces …..plus I think there’s a haunted walk component to it! If you get a chance book Room 304 as it’s a corner room on the top floor and the ONLY one with an additional window with a decent view (4 windows versus just 3). Each room is composed of 3 ‘cells’….bathroom cell very luxurious, entry cell for sitting, and bedroom cell. The 3 cells are now open concept, hence not claustrophobic. Our room had 2 tvs (not sure why) worked by the same 1 remote. The bathrobes were the SOFTEST I’ve ever experienced! The continental breakfast was spectacular and generous. They had the best coffee I had in all of England. This hotel was worth the splurge!!

The hotel is a stunning building, that has been restored to the highest level. The rooms have mini-bars with complimentary soft drinks from local producers and there are four EV charging bays that are also free.

A fantastic stay and what an experience! Would highly recommend anyone to stay here. Great friendly welcome and everyone here could not do enough for you. The room was amazing and had the best nights sleep. We had a complimentary soft drink mini bar which was a nice touch. Bathroom was amazing too. We didn't eat here in the evening as had lunch at Rick Steins in Padstow, however, really enjoyed breakfast. Really can't wait to stay here again. THANK YOU Bodmin Jail Hotel, we will be back.

Hotel facilities and service absolutely outstanding, balanced between comfy, modern hotel and... Obviously a former jail beautifully. Bar area and restaurant found it difficult to balance this in my opinion, hi end bar but excess to the public and dogs etc made it messy and the food in the restaurant in the evening was a little underwhelming for the money. The service was brilliant from every member of staff encountered.
