Very relaxed place, slightly older crowd, people are here for peace and quiet. There is a private beach better than those over-rated beaches at Playa Coco and and Playa Hermosa. There is a good pool and pool bar. Howler monkeys move through the trees and you can see them every day. The staff of young people were wonderful and very attentive and accommodating. Sergio, Greddy, the young women at the reception were wonderful. The breakfasts were very good. The food was fine, but it also was fun to go and eat out in nearby Hermosa (5 minute drive by Uber). There is no animation here so it is not ideal for kids. This was fine with us. All in all, a very relaxing and enjoyable place.

- ⁠shower didn’t work and made a very loud honking noise
- ⁠toilet didn’t flush
- ⁠insects (ants and little black bugs) all over room.
- ⁠the resort itself did not look in good working condition - fountains we empty and not working, everything seemed very dated (unlike the photos we saw when we booked).
- ⁠the balcony in the photos we saw were very private and quiet looking, while ours had a big lights shining in and looked straight onto the walking path

Rooms are very cosy, but need some improvements, such our safe was not working and no one fix it even we reported, toilet pump some time was not functional and required manual adjustment. Also the people next door was party after midnight on outdoor teracce which was next to our room so we couldn't sleep as the insulation is poor.

The room was spacious, clean and private. The staff were excellent, very friendly and attentive. The grounds were lovely, with plenty of trees and flowering plants. The pool was large and cleaned consistently, and the views of the beach and ocean were beautiful. We saw plenty of birds, iguanas and the howler monkeys.
As for the restaurant, the breakfast was generally very good, but the eggs were frequently cold. The prices are high and several of the dinner items we had were not good....for example, very tough osso buco and over-spiced fettuccine. We had fresher and better food down the beach at the Eco-Camping mini restaurant, and at Blu.
This resort would benefit from more activities. The shallow end of the pool is perfect for things like water volleyball and aquafit.
The place also needs quite a bit of maintenance in the rooms, and on the grounds.
Overall, we had a good stay.

We booked the Papagayo last minute after staying at another hotel that was sub par. Our room was great. Spotless, big, with a nice terrace. The property itself is outdated. It is well maintained, but the pool itself gets dirty quickly due to falling leaves. There were not enough sun loungers, and not enough shade. The beach was very nice to walk on, but not the best for swimming. We used the free kayaks on site, and kayaked across the bay 2.5+ miles to the four seasons. Everything at the golden palms hotel was outrageously priced. The food ($28.99 for a burger, cocktails $15-18) was so expensive we walked down the beach to the Marriot El Mangroove hotel, and had gourmet meals for a better price. Hacienda blu was also spectacular and cheaper, just a short walk down the beach. Out of spite we never ate a meal at the hotel because of how expensive it was. The free breakfast was sufficient. Staff were nice and attentive. However, for the price of the hotel, it is too expensive for what you get.

We had to stay 1 night recently when our flights home were canceled and this was the closest hotel that had available rooms. Based on the high price, we assumed it would be a lovely experience but unfortunately it was terrible. The hotel has almost an abandoned feel to it and everything feels quite date, old, and not fully taken care of. The room wasn't very clean, there were many bugs inside the room. The shower handle didn't work (either scalding hot or cold water, no in between), the phone didn't work, the toilet barely worked, the wifi was extremely slow and we had zero cell reception. The door lock was the kind that you have on an interior bathroom door (push button), so we also didn't feel safe throughout the night. The front desk staff were friendly but not helpful. We had to send WhatsApp messages to someone named Daniela for anything that we needed. We booked a car through Daniela back to the airport the next morning (including pre-paying), but he never showed up. We ended up having to order an Uber. I have asked for a refund multiple times but Daniela hasn't responded. When we asked the front desk for help they had no information and couldn't help.

Would definitely recommend not staying here and finding something else. I wish we could get our money back.

All the staff were so great! Everyone always providing the extra service. They even surprised me with a drone video of me and my husband kayaking, which was a treat! However, our room phone and safety deposit box were both not working. Not a big deal for us but it’s worth saying. Overall, we loved our 6 days stay and hope to be back!

This is a super dated hotel, like circa the mid-nineties. My biggest complaint was the food. You SHOULD NOT eat the food here, I think my high school cafeteria had better food.

The resort is just meh- if you are staying there on your way in or out, it’s fine- just not as the main event.

There aren’t enough pool or beach chairs for all guests and the beach is super muddy.

Another big complaint was that they forced you to buy a mandatory NYE dinner for $100/ person. This was easily one of the worst meals I’ve ever eaten. Ever.

That said the staff is friendly- but this place just isn’t it.

The staff was great. The room was quite large and bed was comfortable but room definitely had a musty/moldy smell to it. This property is an older property and was once a prime facility. Its a bit outdated though the grounds are very beautiful and the location at the excluded end of the beach was lovely. The breakfast buffet and a la carte weekday menu was mediocre at best. The pastries were not fresh and neither was the juice. Both were pre packaged and low quality. The weekday a la carte breakfast might have filled the stomach of a ten year old..especially the fruit portion. For $230 per night the breakfast better be stellar...it was not. Nevertheless, im not overly disappointed but $230 value is a bit too much...maybe $150-175 max

Beautiful calm beach. Jungle garden property. Big rooms with garden patio. Nice pool area recommend having car to see area. Close to Hermosa and Coco beach also 1 hour drive to Rincon Area and 20 minute drive to airport.
Cons-lounge/bar area could be set up to be more inviting. Could include bar seating, lively music, drink specials. Would also recommend having paddle boards for the calm water.

Such a lovely place. Low season and we had it almost all to ourselves. All the staff so friendly and attentive - Andrea, Sergio, Daniela - we felt like we were family - they greeted us by name, knew what wanted to drink with breakfast (which is included!), were ready to take care of whatever we needed.
Food good - although a little pricey, but that is what you expect at a nice resort. There are a couple of places you can walk to (did for one lunch), but mainly just ate at their nice outdoor restaurant (has an air-conditioned section if you like, but we found al fresco rather enjoyable).
Paddleboards and kayaks for a modest fee (we did the latter). Decent beach you can walk for a couple miles on, without much in the way of waves so easy to swim. And nice and warm water (late Sept). Howler monkeys, iguanas and birds galore all right there. And beautiful gardens.
If you want to do a tour, while you are there, go with Freddy - he is amazing, particularly if you like wildlife. Did his rainforest and volcano tour - amazing and learned so much. His assistant Meme will get you set up. Pura Vida!

From the minute we walked into the hotel, we were treated like queens and kings. The entire staff was attentive, kind and friendly at all times. We had a dilemma with our rental car company and the staff at Papagayo Golden Palms helped us by shuttling us to our tours. The entire staff, Mauricio, Natalie, JeJey, Andrea, Sergio and a few more were great! I cannot recommend this hotel enough!!! The premises were beautiful, quiet, serene and very clean. Treat yourself to the wonderful hotel!

One of the best experiences we have had staying at a resort! The minute we got there we were treated like royalty! you will not find a better more attentive and friendly staff anywhere! The place is beautiful,quiet,clean and welcoming. It was perfect for us to getaway from the rat race for a week and and enjoy the surroundings the beautiful pool and the wildlife especially the mango tree full of monkeys!! They have 1 restaurant on the premises and the food is delicious!!! Again we would not hesitate to go back. The staff is one of the biggest reasons for that. Every single one of them we can actually call friends by the end of our trip! We were tired of the \"all inclusives\" with the sometimes loud and sometimes obnoxious crowds you can get at times! This was the best place we could have picked to stay! The staff was absolutely outstanding with their service and were so friendly and helpful! The food was excellent. The rooms were exceptionally clean and stayed cool all day. We walked the beach and spent lots of time at the pool. It was not over crowded like other places where you can’t even find a chair. In the pool you get to see the monkeys in the mango treee right above you taking naps and eating mangos. It was magical! Breakfast is free and was so good too. I will definitely go back I miss it already! Thank you to - Jeilor, Sergio, Federico, Edwin, Roland, Hailey, Andrea and all the staff that were so fun!

We were welcomed with drinks and cool towels. It was such a quiet property during this time of the year! The landscaping of the property was beautiful & colorful with the walkways paved with florals, definitely gives a tropical vibe! So much lush greenery. 10-15 min away from playa de coco & zi lounge; about 30min from the airport in the early AM hours. We had no issues getting an uber at 530am.

Hotel has on site restaurant. Roland was the best; we ordered ribs& fries, short rib, salmon tartar, bbq wings, shrimp plate and spinach ravioli & left completely stuffed with leftovers. *strawberry margarita was the crowd pleaser for drinks

There is also a pool with semi-private beach and equipment available to use (kayak, paddleboard), sun beds and hammocks overlooking the water. They also offer spa treatments on site.

The room & restroom were spacious (shower was huge), with a living room area and private patio enclosed with tall plants for privacy.

Everyone was so friendly and helpful during our short stay here. We can’t wait to come back !

The only option available for us was a family style room. It was spacious in that there were two queen beds and a sitting area. Our patio was completely secluded due to the trees in front. The property itself is so beautifully landscaped. Your stress will melt away! The staff is friendly and accomodating. I asked for an iron and one was delivered promptly, though they weren't sure if there were any. It was away from the town area and anything you do away from there will cost a grip to get to. Perfect getaway for a couple!

We stayed at this hotel during the last 4 days of our 2-week trip so, we really liked that the resort was quiet and occupancy seamed to be low. At times we were the only ones at the pool. We had some challenges at this resort with the safe not working (we went through 4 of them), swarms of ants in our unit and the hotel cleaning staff leaving our back sliding glass door open. Which was a problem considering the safes are not bolted down. However, all of our issues were remedied very quickly and staff were very apologetic. It is really the staff that made our stay enjoyable. The breakfast buffet was very good and had a good variety every day but my husband made a comment that there were no waffles and they said no problem and made him waffles. I also asked where there was a nearby restaurant that made enchiladas and they said no problem we will make them for you. They were terrific! We wanted to use the SUPs and thought that they would be provided as part of their amenities but they were $15 USD ($23 CAD) to rent so we chose not to spend the extra money. The beach front close to the resort is a little murky so you have to walk further down if you want to swim. We preferred the pool anyways. The pool does have some leaves in it but it was being cleaned daily. Small price to pay to have lots of natural shade. The trees also attracted lots of howler monkeys, large iguanas and black vultures. This was our afternoon entertainment.

If you want to enjoy your vacay, please avoid this This place. It deserves one star and that it’s only because of their staff.
For starters they don’t even have water available after 8pm.
Not bar or food after 8pm ( in the middle of now where)
Mislead advertising about “ocean front” it’s just a mud
Internet doesn’t work
There’s no iron in the room
When water it’s available it cost 8 dollars per Bottle. (some cheap label water)
Worst place to Stay. We even left earlier.

We loved Golden Palms! The staff is so friendly! The food is amazing.mThe rooms are nice and big. Bed is very comfortable. The pool is huge. We liked the quietness of the resort. Edwin and Federico were amazing at the pool side bar. Any activity you would like to do they will have it to you quickly. We did jet skis and they were there within minutes. Playa Hermosa is a 5 min drive. We did choose to go eat there a couple of nights. We would definitely stay here again !

Golden palms is absolutely gorgeous. The staff is incredible - friendly, helpful and they go out of their way to make you comfortable and to keep the facilities clean. The breakfast has freshly made eggs, French toast, black beans and rice, plantains, potatoes, cereal and amazing fruit. I recommend getting an iced coffee, which is included with breakfast.

We loved the pool and had plenty of smoothies while swimming e with the kids and relaxing. Watermelon, strawberry or mango were all amazing.

There are hammocks where you can lay and see the howler monkey families pass through in the morning or afternoon.

We had dinner on the property and I highly recommend the grilled shrimp, which was part of my Caesar salad. All the food was delicious.
The property is beautiful manicured and has beautiful birds and butterflies.

The staff also helped us to arrange a snorkel and boating outing, which was fantastic. We saw string raid, eels, bright fish and a puffer fish.

Nice hotel right on the beach

This hotel feels a bit dated but it's clean, comfortable, and nicely situated on the water. You won't see the beach from your rooms but it's right on the other side of the pool. The beach is very easy to access and the hotel provides some lounge chairs and hammocks on a grassy area adjacent to the beach. The waterfront is rocky in one direction and sandy in the other direction. It is not private to the hotel but it wasn't at all crowded when we were there during peak season. Breakfast is included and quite good for a free breakfast (eggs, meat, pancakes, Costa Rica dishes, cereals...). Dinner on the other hand was not worth it. Everything had potential but everything was a miss. Overcooked fish, overcooked steak that was missing chimichurri, dry sauceless ravioli, poorly done soup. Out of 10 dinners we had while in Costa Rica this was the only one that I wished I had gone elsewhere for (elsewhere = Ginger in this case. Wonderful restaurant). But the hotel is nice if you can get a decent deal on rooms. Access to the beach and clean comfortable air-conditioned rooms are the highlights.

We spent 6 nights at this hotel and it was a lovely stay. The room was large and very clean. The hotel grounds were well maintained and surrounded by nature. The pool.was great and there was a very nice hammock and fire pit area for relaxing. There were not many guests during our stay so it felt like we had the place to ourselves. Lastly, the staff were wonderful, especially Andrea in the restaurant who was just a lovely lady who took great care of us.

The Premiere access bag drop line was so long that we missed our flight. There was no employee during 75 min we waited there. Then had to stand in line another 1.5 hour to get travel assistance because there were so many others who also did not ever expect the Premier drop off line to stretch mile high. After an hour we (the people in line) were finally approached by an employee and we all let out our frustrations to which he said there was an alternative line downstairs but now it would take longer for us compared to where we now if we switch even though the line itself is shorter. So we waited longer and missed our flight. Where was that employee for the hole hour, why nobody was directing people to alternative routes? Apparently none was scheduled or none showed up to work? Regardless, over threw hours of standing in line we learned that the soonest they could reschedule us was only two days later. Our expensive beach hotel is nonrefundable and travel mood is ruined. I now understand why Newarc airport is consistently voted the worst in the nation. Please try and stay out of it

Beautiful property, very clean but not busy at all-felt like a ghost town. Beach in this area is not very nice. Food is ok. Patio door to the room didn’t lock.

Quiet and beautiful. Friendly staff, nice artwork, clean, and live the beach front chairs. They made breakfast boxes for us before heading to airport for early flight. Definitely recommend!

The property is beautiful, green and lush and well taken care of. The staff is very friendly. The rooms are very clean and updated. We sat at the pool and watched the monkeys play in the trees.

We had a nice quiet stay at this property. Did not have a tub, but the shower was spacious. Our room was also
spacious, and very clean. Waling distance to Playa Panama which is a quiet, calm bay. Excellent place to avoid the crowds and only about 20 minute drive to Playa Coco which busy and crowded.

Beautiful landscaping, bland food, blah rooms

This was the first place we stayed on our two week journey.
It rained the entire time.
The room was very stale. Everything was white. No pictures, no art.
This was the only place we stayed that had a tv, although old, it sufficed.
No beach views from rooms. Instead a little courtyard surrounded by overgrown vegetation… so much so that you couldn’t even sit outside.
The food was subpar as well as the ambiance.
The staff are ridiculously kind and attentive.
The landscaping is gorgeous, but the rooms are blah.

First of all, this is not a beachfront hotel. The beach is undeveloped and has no seating. There is also a dirty pond collecting mosquitoes next to the property. The hotel was almost empty . I think I only saw 3 other guests. Yet the front desk employee decided to place us in the furthest building possible to make us do a long walk with our luggage. The fridge was so old and loud we had to disconnect it to be able to sleep. The room smelled like strong cleaning chemicals l.In the morning there was no running water and I had to shower with water bottles. Unbelievably disappointed.

This should not be considered a \"Beachfront\". The beach is not pretty, no seating, low tide every day, rocky, not clean. The hotel was OK, I had issues everyday with the AC. It sounds like being on an airplane .. either too cold or too hot. Staff was OK - although I speak Spanish they ALWAYS looked at me as if I was alien. Not polite!! A paying customer should be treated with respect. Won't be going back to hotel or CR.

Breakfast needs to be improved

Location and garden are great. Rooms are okay. However, breakfast is terrible. Coffee and juice were really bad, and so was the food. Also have to deduct one star for using plastic straws while the rest of Costa Rica is making an effort to avoid them.

Loved our stay here! So quiet and quint.
Beautiful grounds. Saw Congo monkey family flying in the trees eating mangos, and an iguana showed up for his breakfast at the restaurant every morning. It was delightful.

Amazing location with an even more amazing staff

This hotel and it's staff made our trip to Costa Rica even more memorable and special that i could have imagined. Every person who works there was so kind, friendly, and accommodating that i cant imagine anywhere in the world I'd rather stay than there with them. We were there for 9 days and I will truly miss them.
The hotel grounds are beautifully designed as though had our own personal botanic garden in the rain forest. We also saw plenty of iguanas, exotic birds, and several monkeys in the mango tree near the pool on our final day.

Beautiful resort. Private beach front. The staff was amazing and friendly, top notch service. There are several nice beaches nearby. No restaurants close by, the food at the resort is fine, but a pretty limited menu. This is the perfect place for a quiet get away, lots of nature, not a long drive to el recon de la vieja volcano which is amazing. It was very clean, we would return.

Great Value - Wonderful Staff

I really enjoyed staying at Papagayo - the staff are all very sincere and friendly. The pool is heated (thank you!) but the hot water in my shower never got hot. The grounds are green and every room is a one-story bungalow, which means no room above (yay!). The beach is lovely and the food is decent, but it is worth going off property for better meals when you're in the mood. I'll be back for sure.

Awesome stay! Def recommend

The place is awesome, a tad separated from the hustle and bustle of the area, which makes for a relaxing stay but you’re also close to the action / tours / excursions, but also has restaurant/ room service and of course the beach.

I found everything to be awesome, including the welcome by the monkeys in the trees outside my room (be careful what you leave outside!)

Would definitely return.
