I celebrated my birthday at El Mangroove Hotel in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, and it was absolutely outstanding! From start to finish, the experience exceeded every expectation.

The property is stunning — lush, modern, and perfectly designed for both relaxation and luxury. The staff went above and beyond to make me feel truly special throughout my stay. Every interaction was kind, attentive, and genuine.

The food was delicious — fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented at every meal. My room was spotless and elegant, cleaned thoroughly every day with attention to detail. The atmosphere across the resort was serene and inviting, ideal for unwinding and celebrating.

It was everything and more than I could have hoped for. I sincerely enjoyed my birthday trip and would highly recommend El Mangroove to anyone looking for an unforgettable stay in the Papagayo Peninsula.

In summary this hotel is not a $700 per night resort. The condition, cleanliness, amenities, gym, rooms were just very average. Would not return or recommend. Had so many issues with room keys working. Every day we had to go and get new keys. Also, there is nothing for entertainment or actives after 6:30pm.

This was a wonderful property, very clean and modern. The best part was the staff: Javier is the most helpful and beautiful soul I have ever met (reception), Jesus and Camila at the reception are very kind and helpful. Rodrigo at the aquatic is awesome and took great care of us. He arranged a boat for us to go island hoping which was the most incredible experience (Daniel and Pablo were the guides on the boat and were incredible). The whole experience at this hotel is a paradise dream.

The place is nice only for elaxing. If you have children, this is not the place. Is nothing to do. They don't have any activities. There is nothing to do at night. They ahave the same menu every day. There is not a variety of foods. You need to either rent car or pay Uber which is super expensive. Also pay a lot of money for excursions every day.

Very nice resort. Staff was very friendly, the grounds are clean, easy parking and the pools are great. We loved the rooms with the hammock. The things we weren't crazy about was we didnt realize the beach wasnt part of the resort and its public meaning locals can use the lounge chairs provided by the hotel and you cant sit there without being harassed by people trying to get you to buy a service (massages, boat tours etc). The other thing is I wish they offered some kind of resort entertainment during the day or night since there isnt much to do in the area except for coco beach which we didnt feel safe going at night.

In general, hotel was ok, bathroom smells like mold, room was not very spacious. Half of tanning chairs stays reserved. Dinner is only available at one restaurant, very overpriced with small portions. We per-arrange transportation from the airport to the hotel. When we got to the airport no one met us, so we have to take a taxi, but as soon as we arrived we were told that we have to pay regardless. They claimed that driver was there but we just somehow didn't see him (at the video he recorded to prove he was there, no one else was around, however when we arrived there were many drivers there), they blamed us we didn't see him, didn't even apologize that we have to look for a taxi, and it was dark, no wifi, no phone service. The vibe at this hotel was all about money. I would not recommend this place.

Wouldn’t go back. Terrible food - a few other guests were sick from the Mediterranean spot (thank god for Haciendo Bleu 5 minutes away, ginger is great too). Drinks take at least 20 minutes. Unfriendly front desk staff (rest of the staff was nice and wanted to help but clearly work out of fear). It’s in a swamp, not the nicest areas around here. Bugs in all rooms. Weird vibes as half of this is an adults only resort and the other half is full families. The lighting (very dark and poorly pointed) and finishes are all junk as it’s falling apart (tile and decking were cutting many people in the pool). Strips of attitude that does go is pulling up like cheap carpet. I don’t know exactly how to put it in works other than a bad episode of the white lotus where you go to die. Luckily we made friends with a number of people staying and made the most of it but look around. It is not a Marriott grade resort,

Very disappointing stay. If you are going to market a rundown and poorly maintained hotel as mid-level luxury, then it should at least be clean and well managed. Our room smelled terrible, had mold growing in the sink and shower, had dirty and stained surfaces throughout. Unfortunately, the same was true in all other areas of the resort as is evident in the photos. The pool was full of leaves and other debris and couldn't really be used. When someone did finally decide to clean something, it was a staff member using a leaf blower right next to the chairs we were using. We also got a nice wakeup call at 6:30am when someone decided it would be a good time to use a blower right outside our window.

During our two-week journey across Costa Rica, our stay at the El Mangroove was the absolute low point. We ended up staying only a single day, but even that was too long.

** Since the lack of cleanliness kept us from eating at the hotel, we did find a nice little local restaurant (La Marina) about 15 minutes away by car. We would highly recommend if you're looking for a local experience.

The place is amazing. Excellent food, rooms are so comfortable and the pools are beautiful. Only problem…there was a huge wedding going on across from our room. The music was so loud until 10pm that is all you could hear at the restaurants, pools, and in our room. El Mangrove prides itself on Eco Friendless and the noise pollution was out of control. It would have been nice to get just a heads up about the wedding so we would know in advance and be prepared

We paid nearly $500/night for a room with a view of a chain link fence and construction behind it, the room had a hint of sewer gas smell which was in the bedding, and they wouldn’t move us to another room. We ordered room service the first night and my wife got food poisoning and spent our three days at the hotel in the room very sick, and the staff responded to us with, “you should have told us of any allergies you had before ordering”, completely ignoring it was food poisoning from a margherita pizza! Huge disappointment from a Marriot hotel and for ruining our 25th wedding anniversary trip and first time to Costa Rica. I’ll never stay at an AC Marriot hotel again.

I celebrated my birthday and there was a hiccup on the first night. However they took accountability and made sure that the rest of the stay was magical. Jesus was amazing. The staff was always friendly and safety was very important to this team. Was able to get transportation to wherever we wanted to go. Airport transportation was a little pricey but glad they had it in place. Food was good.

We stayed here for a week as a family. Everything was exceptional. Despite construction in the neighboring area, there was no disruption. Staff was great. Location is excellent. A separate pool provided a nice escape for the adults and the kids didn’t want to leave the pool and play area all day.

The resort was just amazing.

Beautiful, new hotel. The D2D staff were nice and friendly. We travelled with 2 girls, age 4 and 7. I was disappointed that the kids club “guppies” wasn’t in service with no alternatives. It was listed as a service during the booking. We wouldn’t have stayed there if we knew. When I asked the front desk all they offered was an expensive 3rd party baby sitting service. I got the impression sometimes they’d prefer this be an adult resort. I travel a lot but don’t normally write reviews but I wish someone gave me the heads up about this in advance.

We enjoyed our stay at this resort. Our room was large and comfortable with a few odd design features. This property is not walking distance to anything worth seeing, so you are relegated to the property. Food was fresh and well prepared. Spa had limited availability and needs more capacity. Exercise room is just basic and could use some upgrading. Staff were friendly, especially Adrian, who brought us mangos when we mentioned that we liked them. We enjoyed the limited hiking offered on the beach path and swimming in the lap pool. A nice place to relax.

Hotel grounds were nice, restaurant was good and the food was very good. Really disappointed in the room, which was one of three opposite the building works. These works started at 0700 and finished just after 2100, so sitting on the balcony in the evening was not an option. The view was an eyesore and for $300 a night, room only I did not expect this, even more disappointing was the lack of action to resolve the problem.

The hotel did not appear more than 50% full based on numbers of people at the pool & restaurant, so I cannot fathom why they would assign the three rooms facing the building works. If no further rooms of a similar standard were available then guests should be upgraded, rather than be given this view.
We also had an issue with a reservation made for one of the resort fee benefits (coffee tasting), this did not happen on the 10th as per the booking made the previous day with the front desk. To be fair to Josue, we were given the coffee tasting at breakfast on the 11th, however the manager did not provide any alternative or resolution over the room which was the bigger issue.

Complained at the front desk about the room, just got a sorry, raised it again at check out, got another sorry. Upon returning home complained to Marriott and they reverted it back to the hotel and still waiting to hear back 2 weeks later.
As a Marriott Bonvoy member I would expect better service upon raising a complaint, particularly when photo & video evidence was provided.

The staff was absolutely terrific. A to the front desk, the bell staff, the restaurant staff. My only real concern is accessibility. There is no elevator to the second floor. The stair railings were loose. Some of the paths were very slippery and some were treacherous in the dark. There was a ramp into the pool, but it was slippery and there was no railing. So, great staff and interesting concept but some problems for anyone with a cane.

This is the most unique property I've ever stayed. I have to say the rooms are very unusual and I wished I had some outdoor space instead of indoor space that is screened in. The room was extremely comfortable and I loved the large shower and dressing room area out of the way from the bathroom sink. The bed was very comfortable and I slept well. Never heard the wildlife behind our room until I got up and went out into the screened room.

We were there with a wedding party for five days. The staff was so accommodating to us all pulling tables together as the group got larger and larger every day. Great breakfast buffet but since it was not included in our rate and quite pricy, I only chose to indulge one day but everything was delicious. I really think this property should be an all-inclusive since there is absolutely nothing walkable in the area so you are forced to eat on property if you don't have transportation and we found it to be extremely pricy ($700 for five days) for food and drinks (and we didn't drink THAT much).

Overall, a wonderful experience for our first visit to Costa Rica! Kudos to all of their hardworking staff for the smiles and hard work they put in every single day.

El Mangroove Papagayo in Costa Rica was lovely and well maintained. Construction upgrades were in the works and fortunately did not have a negative impact on our Marriott experience. We had dinner at the more formal restaurant option. The wait staff was absolutely lovely. They were professional, thorough, and so pleasant. The talented saxophonist who performed during dinner truly added to our positive experience. She was lovely! There is one area that could be greatly improved and one that most likely won’t be so easily remedied; 1) the suites had a musty moldy smell that could be addressed by using a dehumidifier 2) the restaurant hostess could actually greet patrons in a more welcoming manor rather than offer the air of having better things to do especially when the restaurant is nearly empty.

The Hotel is beautiful, but they are undergoing construction and is pretty noisy. The pool is great, but with the construction noise is very annoying. Please note the hotel is gonna be going under construction for another year so if you are planing to relax by the pool is going to be very noisy. Some of the staff was great, but some others not so friendly.

This hotel is an incredible place to stay, easy to spend as much time as you want at the resort, but close to the airport and other activities. Good food on-site, and hard to beat the beach on site, with free rentals of kayaks and paddle boards. Everything is new and clean, and the suite style of all the rooms allows for a great stay.

Two choices of restaurants with great food at each. The one place alternated evenings of specialized dishes which we enjoyed. This is a secluded property which is great but away from the city. There are screened-in porches with couches and hammocks for many rooms, with large, well-air conditioned bedrooms. Room service and bars/restaurants currently close at 9pm. Poolside wait service closes at 6pm! That is a poor management decision for a resort offering few options for evening entertainment, in a somewhat remote area (20 minutes fromLiberia Airport, but certainly far enough away to not know it).

Location of the resort is not central to rain forest attractions. Its 88 rooms had a 60 percent or so occupancy this week, giving us the feeling we had the resort to ourselves and a few friends.

The beach is grey or black sand, which I assume is volcanic. It is certainly clean and well-maintained. The surf is minimal. The beach is protected by outlying land masses. Several boats are anchored it in this natural harbor environment.

We felt completely safe here and in all of Costa Rica. Tour guide ads leading tourists to feel the need for “security” are misleading. Rent a car and use Google Maps. However, if you desire a tour guide, we recommend Gabriel, a private tour vendor. He is exceptional.

Pre-flight COVID tests are $50 at labs near the airport, and results are accepted by the U.S. airlines and are emailed to you in an hour. Booking tests and tours through your resorts sometimes doubles prices.

El Mangroove is a sweet little resort about 20 minutes from the Liberia airport.

The grounds are impeccable, the rooms lovely and relaxing and the pool is long and sleek with a stunning view of the ocean

Amazing property and hospitality. Private beach access and nice pool. Standard rooms are small, but the separate sitting area is great when guests are sleeping. A/C is strong. Would love to return again.

Overall the hotel is beautifull. Very clean and family friendly. One problem i had was i slipped and fell on the property, there are some places there that is very smooth and one can easily fall. luckily as i fell there was a staff that walked by at the time and saw it happened. He helped me up and advised me that he'll let the front desk know that I fell. After that no one from the hotel reaced out to me to make sure i was ok.

The architecture is very modern, natural and beautiful and its a lovely setting on the beach and in the mangrove. It was an unusual time to be at the the resort as the coronavirus lockdowns were starting to have an impact. As a result, the hotel was very uncrowded but the hotel was running on limited staff and a number of services and amenities were not fully available. Nevertheless, the staff was very friendly and professional throughout the stay.

I did have some minor maintenance issues with a clogged sink and an AC unit that was not functioning properly. It didn't seem to go to the set temperature and was alway either very cold or a little too hot and stuffy
