We arrived and checkin was quick and easy, I had booked a Seaview for 1 night for £189. Just be warned if you book a standard double you may end up in a windowless room.
Anyway, the hotel lobby is lovely, the stairwell is gorgeous and clean. The room however wasnt great ! There were hairs from the previous customers all over the shower, the bathroom needs some TLC. We had a quarter of toilet roll left for us. You cannot really call it a Seaview as the windows are so dirty with bird poo and dirt you can barely see out. We didn't eat there so I cannot comment on the food. Its a great location, 10 mins walk from the station and the tram is next door to access the beech.

The Grand Hotel is a beautiful hotel in a great location. The room (a triple / family room) was clean and convenient. The fans in the room (in the midst of a heatwave) and the water dispenser in reception were great touches.

We were initially impressed with the proactive communication prior to our visit. However, the code we were given (twice) for the NCP wouldn't work on arrival and we were told by NCP it had expired in March 2026. On raising this with Barbara at reception, we received a shrug and a recommendation to try to park on the street. It transpired that the code on both emails was wrong.

Another slightly baffling interaction occurred when asking a member of the Hotel team for ice to cool down us / our water in the warm room. We were questioned on why we were requesting and what we wanted it for before the team member agreed to provide it. I'm still not clear what the presumed issue was.

We didn't eat in the Hotel as it was so conveniently located for some lovely restaurants but enjoyed the in-house entertainment on Friday evening and the fayre on Sunday, both of which were enjoyable.

The property is not maintained. The rooms are supposed to be premier sea view costing extra but the windows are covered with bird poo, no sea view. The toilet doors and door handle are poorly fitted and don’t open or close. No soap or shower gels in bath. Dusty bed and furniture in bedroom. The lifts to the lower floors only for 3 people and it’s so slow causing issues. Overall poor experience and will not be returning and not recommend to anyone to stay here.

I'm sure The Grand was in it's day, but we live in a different world.
Our room could've done with a couple of little repairs and the beds weren't the most comfy we've had. The lift didn't work either, but there was no notice on the ground floor, it was only once we'd walked up to our room on the 4th that we saw a notice on the lift door there.
We also didn't gat a mail about our 'forthcoming visit' until an hour after we'd arrived with details about a parking deal which would've suited us very well, but we'd already parked up and paid by that point. We decided not to chance the breakfast on the back of all that and went to a good café 50 yards up the road.
It was very interesting looking around the architecture though, there was some impressive stuff and the location was excellent.

The best part of the hotel was the outside,and the entrance hall and staircase.Unfortunately the rest of the hotel was very down market. The whole place needs a refurbishment !
Our room was disgusting in the bathroom there was glue ? ( not sure what is was ) on the bottom of two rows of tiles dirt stuck to it .chopped paint every where needed painting .
You couldn’t see out of the windows due to bird poo !
The ceiling over the bath leaked brown water .when I reported it I was told mantainace would look at it ! We came back after a trip out and the brown water was still there .I went to reception and was told that it had been looked at and it was from the bath/shower upstairs what do you want us to do !! I said clean the bath for a start as it was out last night I couldn’t believe it .
The first night in the restaurant we went down and were told sit anywhere ,so I asked if we could order a bottle of wine and was told you have get that yourself from the bar !,
When I went up to get some food every plate I tried about 6 were dirty and the last one was covered in grease ! I asked the waitress for clean plates which she got straight from the dishwasher.
The food what can I say it was cold , dried up and some of it you couldn’t eat.breakfast was the same cold food and must have been sitting there . This was 8 am so only 30. In’s after opening.
Needless to say we eat out on the 17 th
This morning 1 waitress for about 120 people it was like faulty towers ! Terrible

The room smelled of human waste. The corridors had literal rubbish across them, flattened cardboard boxes to walk across, nail and screws just on the floor. The floor I was on looked unpainted, bare walls. Staff were doing the best they could but were not customer-focused, unusual given I'd had to change rooms cause of the horrific smell in the first one. The second room was absolutely boiling - the windows don't open.

Lovely old hotel with plenty of character. Room was fine - standard double for single occupancy. Sea view but there were plenty of seagulls. Facilities were good and meals in the harbour lights dining area was good for a pleasing panorama. Bar in empress lounge not open and the large screen tv did not work so we were unable to watch the opening ceremony and first match of the world Cup. Staff helpful and attentive but couldn't sort that. Nonetheless, I would stay again for the services and character overall

The room with a sea view was excellent. Hotel location also excellent. Minor points regarding the room. No water glasses and would have welcomed 2 extra pillows.

Although clean enough inside, the outside is infested with seagull nests and droppings.

The building amenities were acceptable to poor, The bath plug did not have a chain, so needed to be pried out with a spoon handle. The coffee and tea soon ran out and didn't have any idea where to get replacements. The Coffee percolator did not work at all. The bath was supposed to have a Jacuzzi effect, this did not work either.

The decor is beautiful in places with leather sofa's and period furniture, a shame it didn't stop a family of kids using it as gym equipment.

Good hotel if you like fade charm. The Group were on 2nd 3rd floor these were ok esp 2nd floor. Rooms below entrance (downstairs) were not so good per part of group that were here last year. On each floor spectacular lounge areas to meet up. Outside over looking sea also very good. Some one in group had been to Waldorf Astoria NY some years ago as part of cruise deal. They rated this hotel better for room 2nd F & open area spaces If this was in London & had some more improvements it would cost serious money.

Was a little apprehensive when reading reviews but it was ok for an old building needs some TLC a Little out dated staff friendly. Room was ok booked an executive family room but not that executive would have been nice if breakfast was included with the price.The building is lovely inside good views over Scarborough. Beds were clean, only thing missing in room was a phone to contact reception it will keep you fit walking up and down the stairs if you don’t like lifts .

Arrived in the heat wave Saturday 23rd May.
View from the room No43 was directly out across the bay, 2 floors down from reception level, the lift was slow and small.
The fan provided was broken and after asking twice we bought our own. The hotel did say they had none left to other customers who then left. At this time of year the seagulls were very vocal and building nests on any flat ledge. This also prevented us from having the windows open.
The style and location of the hotel is its attraction. The staff in the dinning room work hard and the breakfast food is always topped up. Again the view is wonderful and it is one floor down from reception using the same lift but not too many stairs.
Parking is a problem, you need to be patient or use a local multi-storey 5 minutes walk away. You are high up from the bay but each end of the hotel has a funicular railway.
It is a budget hotel but we would be happy to stay with Britannia again.

Overall not bad. The hotel itself is old and in need of some tlc. We reported some minor maintenance issues at check out. The breakfast food was okay, your usual fried breakfast, cereal, yoghurt and on Sunday morning there was croissants. The entertainment was however surprisingly impressive, each night from 6-late there was bingo, quiz, children's entertainment and live artists. There are several bars within the hotel so you can choose to sit in the lively area or in a quieter space. The views from this hotel are spectacular (for Scarborough). You can sit out on the terrace with a drink and watch the sun set if you choose. The rooms were generally clean, no complaints, I've stayed in worse. There's no Aircon but each room has a fan and the windows open. I mostly love that this hotel is dog friendly, we usually opt for a caravan so our dog can join us so this was a nice change, however dogs aren't allowed in the restaurant but there is a secure green out front for toileting. The location is excellent pub, beaches, shops and restaurants on the doorstep. Staff were friendly and helpful always.

We booked late and knew the reviews weren’t great, but the stay was far worse than expected.
Check in involved long queues, and when we finally got to our rooms, the rooms were doubles but should have been twins. Housekeeping couldn’t be reached and left a message as instructed, and when we returned later that evening, nothing had been changed. One room also had a strong drain smell.
Reception told us housekeeping had finished at 3pm and that the hotel was fully booked, so no room move was possible. Their only “solution” was to spray a strong lemon scent, which didn’t fix the problem.
The next day we were told the rooms would be changed to twins, but again, nothing happened. Breakfast was cold, so we cancelled breakfast for the following day.
When we complained to the manager, we were told no refund or compensation could be given and that only the main manager could deal with it. The main manager wasn’t available the next morning, and we were told our breakfast refund would go through Expedia. Four days later when I contacted the hotel that we have not received the refund, we were informed it could take up to 21 days to receive the refund for the breakfast.
Overall, the service, communication, and room standards were extremely poor.

Firstly I would like to say the room was as described and there I have no complaints and feel it fair to say this.
On arrival all was fine then I went out for a while to come back and find the lift out of order so I asked staff how to access my room and I was directed to a door that my keycard wouldn't open so the lady opened the door and directed me through the door after searching for 10 mins I found my room beating in mind I have my partner with me who has an injured foot.
After getting changed we then ventured back out for food and on our return the lift was still broken to the lower floors so we used the stairs to exit. On our return we asked if we could be let through the door again to which we were told we shouldn't go through there as these are service corridors and not accessable to guests and the said member of staff should not have let us in in the first place, we were then directed to another lift to go up stairs to get down and because of this we made the decision not to stay at the hotel and took the 2hr drive home instead and we were very disappointed with the conclusion to our visit to the grand and will not be visiting again

It is what it is. An old building and old rooms but they are trying their best. Reception staff were really helpful.
Breakfast was ok. Eggs great, bacon ok but god knows how sausages are cooked without any browning on the skin.
The main areas are very grand and theres a good feel to the place. Location is great.
Seagulls are quite horrendous on sills of rooms so take earplugs or you'll be up literally, up with the birds.

Fabulous location and once you get past the dated decor, this hotel has a lot going for it. Yes it’s not perfect but it has a certain charm and I’ll always book to stay here. Gorgeous beach views in certain rooms and the staff we came across were very friendly. You get what you pay for but we love it. Can’t be beaten on ease of access to the beach and sea front.

Where shall I start, well for beginners I end up on a room that is 3 floors down, floor -3 I have been around the World and stayed in dozens of Hotels from 2 stars to 4 stars but this is the first time I stayed in a Hotel that offers rooms without windows and ventilation 3 floors down from the Ground floor.
The room was smelly and dirty, I give a rate of - 3 stars to this Hotel my experience was overall horrible and horrendous.

After waiting half an hour in the queue we were allocated 2033, floor -2 (the basement). The smell of damp was only made less important than the stench from the drains. The carpet hadn't been vacuumed, the bed had bits of dirt on it. The bed was also at right angles to the headboard because the room wasn't big enough to turn the right way round. We went back to reception where by now the queue was one and a half hour long. I asked to see a Manager. We said the room wasn't habitable, no other rooms were available, we were told no refund was possible so we checked out. We drove round for two hours trying to find somewhere else to stay, we eventually found somewhere, albeit at double the price of the Grand. All in all a disgusting experience.

I didn't like anything about it .The booking in is poor getting to the room was terrible, especially with the lifts not working. The corridors had had dirty bedding just thrown in the corridor. I wasn't aware that the standard room didn't have windows this needs to be made clearer because when I booked the room it showed me one with a window. In the box room that we were given it was too hot with no air-conditioning on. It was like a sauna. Then the mattress was disgusting with a cheap mattress topper on, that was not fit for purpose. In the corridor between my room and the stairs there was about ten paint tins and a big cardboard box just left there. If there was a fire we wouldn't have been able to get out as it was that close to the door and stairs. As for a fire distinguisher I couldn't see one. At this point I went back to the reception and handed my keycards back in. The health and safty of this hotel is a disaster waiting to happen and needs to be reviewed.

View from room was the only good thing. Very long permanent queue for check in. Very loud music until 23:30 for all 1st floor rooms. Loud people on terrace outside until 1am. Loud floorboards of room above so we could only sleep when they did. Curtain difficult to move and only just covers the window. No toilet roll holder. No towel rails. Only 2 pillows and one robe in a room for 2. Only one plug socket. 3 check in desks for >400 rooms is nowhere near sufficient.

Very busy bank holiday weekend stay…hotel was fully booked so check in was super busy and some guests were cranky whilst waiting. Staff did their best to get everyone checked in quickly and were polite under pressure. Room was ok for a couple nights. Was clean but needs decor updating. The room was clean on arrival. We were there for several nights. You are advised to leave your towels outside your room if you need them changed . Please be aware this is not always so and you may return later in the evening and be stepping over other guests dirty towels. We were also in a room on the lower floors which was not a problem until the lift was out of service and we had to use the stair . If you have mobility problems this could cause you difficult also it like a maze and there's steps where you aren't expecting their to be. So you have to be very careful. Lucky they had the lift fixed by the time we checked out with our suitcases.On saying all that the staff couldn't have been more helpful and were a pleasure. Max the young singer was great. The hotel is lovely and located brilliantly for town and beach.

They don’t service the rooms but you can get additional toilet roll and tea and coffee etc easily. Entertainment was good but only saw one night as problems with the equipment.

Very clean family room on floor 1, had to go and ask for decaf coffee to be told they didn't stock it slightly disappointed. Then spoke to a member of staff who actually went above and beyond and went and got me some.
Entertainment didn't happen due to sound technical problems but bingo went ahead slightly later than it was ment to.
Evening meal was ok all you can eat buffet but half of the kids menu wasn't available no drinks available other than Very small glasses of water
Bar prices reasonable.
Only thing I will say staff need to ask the people thats sat in the lobby after 11pm to keep the noise down or returning to the hotel drunk after a night out

It is clear that the hotel’s glory days are in the past. There are indications of what it was like then but sadly also signs of its fall from grace. The positives were that the hotel was well situated, was clean, the views spectacular and entertainment was good. The staff were fine but there were few of them. The restaurant was very disappointing and food was mediocre at best. We even skipped breakfast. There was also a lot of noise in our room from seagulls nesting outside but fortunately they were quiet at night.

This place was such a disappointment. Should be closed down during renovation as have Travelodge opposite. Not clean, dust and dbrus everywhere. Builders in lifts and corridors while getting to and from rooms. A shambles. Residents bar closed at 10pm ! We went across road for late drink and they closed at 12. Breakfast was cold, dry, rubber eggs cold. Bread for toast was damp and the thinnest bread I have ever seen. No way will we return at least for next 5 years which will be how long it takes to make it decent. Shame, once the jewel of Scarborough!!

I think Britannia have a lot to answer for. Such an amazing building, now looks like Donald Trump has had beef with it. A lot of issues, from being run down to rooms just being absolutely terribly unhygenic. Stained coffee cups from the last guests, stained pillows, and many more fun features like that. I will say, the staff, 10/10, hats off.

I was woken up very early by some extreamly loud coughing and snooring which went on and on and on. On a plus side when I was checking out the lady on reception was lovely!

Great stay as a solo traveller. The room was lovely and just the right size, well-equipped and with a beautiful sea view. The food was good with plenty of choice and the evening entertainment was a highlight. I checked in online beforehand but still had to queue for quite a while on arrival, which could have been better organised. Overall though, a brilliant first stay and I’d return.

My Room was clean. Shower in my room was clean. Staff customer service skills were Good. Location is only a 10 minute walk to the sea front. Loose wire in the corridor near my room. Grand location, right on the cliffs overlooking the beach and beachfront attractions. The Grand Hotel is Victorian era grandeur with charm but has seen better days. We found a bargain with some trade offs that were worth it for us.

Was initially given a room with partially completed maintenance and a door that did not lock. Had to move room which was much better. Overall the Grand Hotel needs some serious TLC and is currently not so grand. We wouldn’t consider it good value for money.

We had a fantastic stay loved the character of the building and it’s history, when we checked in our initial room was ready and we were given an alternative but upon entering we found the room to be smaller than we expected (I have 2 children with autism and ADHD) so I went back down to reception and explain trying to avoid incoming meltdown, the hotel staff couldn’t be more accommodating and provided us with a larger room right next door to the one previously given, crisis averted!! We had a fantastic stay highly recommended and will definitely be back and next time definitely longer

Dirty floors, carpets laced with dog hair, heaters didn’t work properly. Tv remotes didn’t work in either room. Curtains falling off, holes in walls, large gap in the roof that I had to close myself with an ironing board. No WiFi, mentioned to staff - they didn’t really care. Room cards failed on 4 separate occasions. The whole place is clearly falling apart - the room was awful and the staff working seemed unhappy and unwelcoming in general. Would not stay here again and would advise others to avoid - the room was not cheap and did not represent good value in any way. We literally had to stuff loo roll into one hole in the wall as there was an outside draft coming through!

Lots of negativity about this Hotel
Our experience was Very good Check-in Swift hall Reception downstairs areas Magnificent Staircase Ladings upto 1st floor all new carpets Clean room was great clean superb shower room Staff we're Fantastic Really Helpful and friendly Yes parts of hotel bit Shabby/need updating which is a huge task giving Size of the building but work ongoing in smartining it up
Only real moan the fantastic balcony overlooking the sea front
(Smoking Area) could do with pressue washing sooner rather than later and add few more Bins
Just booked for next year going to be interesting to see the changes and upgrades they doing

We parked elsewhere... After a major let down from where we were ment to stay.. we found the grand and it was perfect for us ..clean and warm .. apart from bath not cleaned (I did it myself) everything was great ..we will be back ...

First room smelt musty and mouldy, cobwebs all over, switched rooms promptly, second room better but very very dusty even in basic areas like skirting boards and headboard. Windows filthy and shower screen hadn’t been cleaned in a while.
Room was lovely and warm and WiFi worked well free tea/coffee sugar in the room and in reception.
Could be a beautiful hotel just needs some TLC.

Bath had jets that don’t work and dirt came out of them

Never heard of a hotel that doesn’t let you bring take away and maes you eat it out side

It’s a shame. Such a beautiful, classic building and the Britannia group skimping on the most basic things, and milking the nostalgic place for every penny they can get before moving on. Sea view room was worthless with the months of not years of grime and dirt on the windows. Carpets that may never have known true modern amenities such as vacuum cleaners… just so sad.

Clean room,lovely sea view,friendly staff.only negative points were lager n cider was rubbish from the bar and parts of the building looking very tired. Overall enjoyed our stay and we will return.
