Lovely hotel, it was very quiet, given it was March but a 25 minute wait for someone to come and serve in the bar seemed excessive- just didn’t seem to have staff about the place. Beach view was great and room very big. Great location if you can find a spot to park your car.

The room was spacious and clean, though the bed was tilted due to the floor so my other half didn’t get a great night sleep as felt like he was about to fall out of bed. The bathroom though dated was clean, however would have liked to have had the small bottles of shower gel / hair shampoo that was advertised in the room description, instead had 3 small pieces of wrapped soap but we went to the local shop and bought what we needed . The breakfast was really tasty however it would have been more perfect if it was warm. Cold egg and bacon on Saturday morning, it was still tasty so didn’t ruin it. We really enjoyed the entertainment in the lounge though was confusing when each time we bought the same drink the price varied by a couple of pounds at a time. The male staff were really nice however the female blonde receptionist could have smiled at least once, felt like it was a chore giving us the directions of where to park. I know she would have had to tell everyone that walks through the door which can I appreciate be tedious, however if you’re in customer service you need to at least pretend you want to be there. Apart from that, we had a really good stay and would definitely recommend

Do not book this hotel !!!!! Room was horrendous I have stopped in some poor hotels in past but this is by far the worst chewing gum stuck on bathroom floor bins not emptied mould all over , we had a baby with us and wouldn’t stay in this so had to travel back home !!!

Absolute filth 🙈 Wouldnt recommend staying here at all and will never stay again. Complained about the state of our room (bed dirty, damp and the kettle with black bits inside) took over an hour for someone to go up and sort what they could. Was told there was no other rooms however when looking online there was rooms. Spoke to multiple other guests who had the same and had moved to 1 - 3 different rooms. Cleaners want sacking. They make it look tidy but dont actually clean. Entertainment was 30mins long and that was your lot. 🙈 all the floors are slanted and not level. Needs a massive renovation to be honest. First hotel i have ever been to where the receptionist doesnt asks how your stay was or says they hope you enjoyed your stay, which says it all to me.
FIND SOMEWHERE ELSE!!

The entry and main hall was just beautiful, I even took pictures so beautiful it was. I would not mind the room was old, u could see where the water was leaked in, but crumbs on the floor everywhere even hallway and smushed mirror and cobweb on the sealing, no thank u. Chair dirty from some coffee or milk spill didn’t leave good impression. Again, didn’t mind old fashion room, I very much liked it but the dirt, that was shame for the hotel. As in room so in hallways.

When entering the hotel it looked great all decorated for Christmas but when we got to our room we couldn't of been more disappointed, the dust in the room was unbelievable, marks all over the furniture, the radiators were thick with muck the lights were so dusty in cobwebs , dirty single glazed windows, we didn't even bother using the bathroom apart from the loo, told the kids to keep their shoes on, they did offer us another room but it wasn't much better, slept badly because of this as felt uncomfortable, I will not be going back unfortunately as it's great location to the beach, the staff were friendly also just cleanliness

We booked two nights there with breakfast included, and paid . According to the sheet the hotel gave us, breakfast was served from 7:30 AM to 10:00 AM. However, on the second day, when we went for breakfast at 9:30 AM, they told us breakfast ended at 9 and didn’t even allow us to take a coffee, even though there was no note on the sheet indicating that breakfast would be served only until 9 when the hotel is quiet, so that we would know. Since I had booked the hotel, I was very embarrassed in front of my partner, unfortunately.Also, they didn’t come to clean our room; they only gave us towels, and we had to make the bed ourselves. The coffee maker didn’t work either.But the room was spacious and nice, and had a good view, and also the water pressure and the bathtub were excellent.and the staff were polite.

Although the room on the 5th floor was spacious, we felt like we were in an attic!
Good view from the window but we couldn't see it much due to the single bed placed under the window.
The bed wasn't that comfy although spacious but the sheets weren't long enough and kept sliding down from the pillows.

The hotel is splendid downstairs and was very festive but the bedrooms need updating as do the en suites.

We found the man who gave us our room robe pleasant but apart from a cleaner, we had no conversation with anyone. On leaving the hotel we handed in the key and there was a quick thank you.
I wouldn't return as i found it expensive for the room. They desperately need to update upstairs.

A beautiful hotel situated in an excellent location but in need of lots of tender loving care. We booked a double room and ended up with a family room on the back. Having stopped before this was a disappointment. The light in the bathroom was intermittent the toilet seat wouldn’t stop up and the tap was stiff and hard to get water. The room needed a deep clean. Apparently it is a dog friendly hotel and our room definitely smelt of animal on asking due to allergies the only rooms that our dog free are the suites and luxury rooms. I don’t object to animals at all but if you have an allergy you need the assurance. This time we booked room only so we cannot comment on food or other facilities. The staff on the whole were very friendly with the exception of one member of reception despite being very efficient she had no people skills which could be perceived as being rude. As stated earlier the building itself is beautiful with its sweeping staircase and in its time must have been the ultimate place to stay. Such a shame this hotel could have a lot of potential.

Room was cold told reception which they sorted it quick. Tv didn’t work NOT sorted. No toiletries shampoo shower gel nut got sorted as we went to reception and picked up.
Over all not too good.
Had an evening meal that was very disappointing, we were the last sitting at 19:00 and hardly any foood left just pickings. Told one of the girls serving that there was no custard for the little bit of crumble I’d found and she said sorry you’ll just have to have cream instead.

The checkin could have been more informative and friendlier - it normally is. More advice could have been provided re the temporary parking restrictions outside and, in particular, help should have been provided as to how to get to our room, as the lift wasn't working. Fortunately a chambermaid was very helpful and showed us and another man to our rooms. Other than that the staff were extremely helpful as usual.

Window was missing a latch so it wouldn’t shut meaning it was noisy and very cold.
No shampoo shower gel or conditioner.
No coffee sachets.
Sticky dirty spoon left in the cup.
Marks/stains on the walls and curtains.
Reception staff in the morning didn’t seem too interested or surprised. Room 422a is terrible.
The whole floor around that room is very cold.
We were advised that evening they were very busy and had no other rooms.

Hotel was good , however there were no food options when we enquired we had had a busy day arrived at hotel checked in freshened up went down to order food and we were told that no food was available, we then had to go out in the Rain and find suitable place to eat
Apparently we were told we should have booked our evening meal , there was no mention of this anywhere in the booking process not did reception tell us when we arrived, would definitely not stay here again

Another enjoyable stay at the royal but a few issues with room this time.we had no lights working on entering room maintenance guy had to come to room and show us how to get them on ( switch behind bedside units ) lamp switches dont work.2 water stains on ceiling from previous leak which has brought wallpaper off wall near wardrobe.hopefully this was a 1 off as previous stays have been good.

Had to wait for about 25 minutes at reception to check in.

Was given a room with poor lighting which didn't look anything like the pictures of the double room I booked. Was small and depressing.

After asking for another room, was provided with a much more spacious one but the decor and the whole room was very dated. The windows were quite dirty, there were cracked tiles in the bathroom, the lock on the bathroom door was broken as someone seems to have forced their entry in there, the floor was completely uneven.

Despite having the desciption of Double Room with Sea View, no reasonable person would say that Room 314 has a sea view. A view of the fire escape stairs, yes, a view of the tramway sure….if you stood on a chair from the far wall, cricked your neck at 37.2 degrees and squinted through the trees, you can imagine seeing the sea…through the cracked window.

We stayed in room 201.The bed wasn’t a king size or a double, it was in face two single beds put together which were both different heights. The mattresses were very hard. Two very poor nights sleep. The room was quite cold, we could not put the heating. We were told the heating comes in for two hours on the evening and two hours in the morning. Overall an experience we will not be repeating as we will not be staying at the Royal Hotel again.

A larger room. Cleanish, everything was ok until we were woken up on the middle of the night to rain coming in. We could ear/see it running down the wall.
Reported to reception next norning to be told they would look at it. Sounded like tge water tank was in the wall near the bed. Again woken up to the sound of this through the night.
We stayed 2 nights. The room was cleaned or toilet rolls topped up.
Check out time was 11am we whilst dressing the cleaner just ealked in at 10am with out knocking.
The bar area was ok. Happy hour bewteen 12-6.
Parking, we used the grand and purchased scratch cards from reception.
Close to beach and shopping facilities.

Booked a double standard room and on arrival we were allocated a twin with a broken bed. We asked to be moved and next room was around the back of the hotel and freezing cold. Asked to be moved again and got another twin that smelled of drains. Finally, on the fourth time, after a lot of going back and fourth to reception we were allocated the double room we booked but it was the smallest room I've ever seen and very grotty. Overall, a terrible experience and will not be returning. Lesson leaned. Better to spend a bit more and stay somewhere else.

I wanted to give a fair review on this property, seeing as so many other travellers have torn it to pieces. I’ve stayed at Britannia Hotels before and generally try to avoid them based on past experiences, but I booked this hotel unknowingly through Expedia under a different brand, which turned out to be part of Britannia Hotels.

The Royal is conveniently located close to the Town Centre and Railway Station, and right next door to the Victorian Tram to the beach and their other property, The Grand. It doesn’t look much from the outside, but prepare to be wowed when you walk inside. The building interior is breathtakingly beautiful and incredibly well cared for.

I was greeted by a friendly receptionist who allowed me to check in immediately as my room was ready. I was given a large double room on the second floor. I took the lift to my room and was absolutely overwhelmed at how spacious it was! Immaculately clean, bright and well cared for with a modern bathroom full of all the amenities you could possibly needs. Plenty of towels and a nice, powerful hot shower.

The room had a coffee machine, fridge, TV and a sofa. The WiFi worked well and was free of charge. Everything was nicely presented and in a good state of repair. Black out curtains covered the huge windows with a lovely view of the sea and tram.

The value for money on this stay was by far the best I’ve had in years. For a little under £40, I had a borderline luxurious stay on a Sunday evening, out of season.

We have just returned from a fantastic stay at The Royal. Every member of staff we engaged with were professional and so friendly, a credit to the Hotel.
The room was so comfortable and clean with a lovely sea view and the hotel had character and charm .
The food was delicious and served in a beautiful dining room.
We cannot fault anything and will definitely be returning.

Arrived early, was allowed to enter room (supposedly cleaned?). Inspection of room, found dust around skirting boards. Spiders webs on window sills. Two chairs had not been cleaned, dust and food under cushions. Some sort of small creature, was on one of the pillows. The kettle was all furred up, and had not been cleaned out.
Informed reception, who immediately moved us to room 115. This was a twin room, with window over front of hotel. However could not look out, because sill was 6 feet above floor level. We also didn't realise it was just above bar, restaurant. We knew that the rooms were not cleaned during our stay. But we left full bin outside room door, to empty. This was not done!
Breakfast was buffet service, however bacon was dried out, tasted like cardboard. Scrambled eggs had liquid in the bottom, black pudding was died out and hard. Sausages were anaemic, didn't looked cooked.
This is not the first time we have been to the \"Royal\" hotel. But the rooms and food have detierated, alarmingly. We will not be booking to go back to that hotel in the future.

BOOK RIGHT NOW!!

I highly recommend this hotel and always stay here when in Scarborough. I always pay extra for the sea view and it is well worth it. Breakfast is great and it is an easy walk down the High Street from the station. Buses are excellent all around the area, eg. Bridlington, Filey, Whitby, Robin Hoods ay, etc. I love the seafront walks. Thank you to all staff.

Bed uncomfortable and lumpy mattresses, terribly stained mattresses and toppers, flimsy thin toppers, asked receptionist if they can sort out, no help there. Found liken room took couple of quilts and topped mattress with those. Broken pull knob in bathroom that converts bath taps to shower head unable to pull up. Broken duel push button for toilet flush. Windows wouldn’t open further than a couple inches room so stuffy, average clean for rest of room.

One of the reasons I chose this hotel was it has a pool, however after booking I received a message from on hotels.com from the hotel saying the pool has been shut since August, slightly disappointed by that so didn’t pack my trunks. However on arrival it became apparent this wasn’t the case and the pool and other leisure facilities were actually open! So denied a morning swim.

This was my first stay at the Royal Hotel, and for what you get I am of the view it is a fair price for a basic hotel stay. The hotel permit they offer is £9 on hotels website it said £7 which needs updating just giving others a heads up. My room was generally clean other than what seemed to be make up marks on the netting of the window, but this was raised upon check out. I heard upon leaving these will be washed. In the room I liked there was an iron and ironing board. Tea/coffee basic, not a fab of Twinings English Breakfast tea and biscuits may have been a nice touch. The rest of the clean was clean, bed was comfortable. A warm room likely due to the pool downstairs. I got the sense staff I met have been at the hotel a while, it would have been nice to know more about areas in the hotel I could/couldn't access with the dog beforehand. I.e top lounge. Hotel is in a good location. If i'm back in the area again I will re-book.

It's very simple to clean/wipe the paintwork around a door handle but everywhere looked as though it had years of dirt. The bed was uncomfortable. Room we stayed in had not been cleaned properly . Carpet was filthy. Two empty crisp packets behind the bedside table dust everywhere and the Coffee and tea facilities had coffee splash marks. Terrible nights sleep.

I didnt like the room we stayed in windows keep banging all night and we was overlooking a passage night and early morning was very noisy overall it was a very nice hotel

This is a lovely hotel full of history, character and charm . It has a good atmosphere and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
I am looking forward to staying here again,

The only downside for me was the car parking was a little frustrating and spent a little time driving around to find a space!

Lovely hotel (apart from 1 issue) staff

Front desk where very helpfull.
Hotel main entrance is stunning.
4th floor was the only other floor we viewed, run down wall paper peeling from walls and ceilings.
Our room was a fantastic size and separate bedroom for the kids.
House keeping were extremely helpfull.
But the only downfall was the extremely rude short elf looking man at the bar. He was rude not onky to me but other customers. Moaning he was busy and we should leave. Happy hours finished.
Didnt visist bar again due to this encounter.
Lovely location to beach and town.

Room was passable, hallways were musty & unclean, hoovers left in hallways both days we were there and the hallway outside of our room had what was left of someone’s hair extension trod into the carpet for the two days we were there..I did not see any housekeeping on either day..
Staff were okay, the leisure facilities were awful.. pool was cloudy and freezing cold, steam room was broken, the sauna was okay..changing rooms smelled like there had been a dirty nappy in the bin for days and wasn’t very clean.the bedroom was clean and tidy beds were clean and comfortable but there was no toiletries provided so make sure to bring your own..downstairs the reception area and bar were Pleasant, we didn’t eat in the restaurant in the evening but we did for breakfast and that was fine..breakfast staff were nice and helpful..the best thing about this hotel is its location..the food and drinks are reasonably priced and you get what you pay for with the stay..unfortunately I don’t think we would stay again unless the hotel made some changes to the services they provide and maybe a little bit of a refurb.

The hotel itself was lovely. However there was dust on the floral arrangements that people had drawn on , we reprted it to the cleaners and they just wiped out the pictures but didnt remove the dust. The staff were super friendly and knowledgable about the area. The location was great. Good price .

Booked a family room for august bank holiday - was expecting us to all be crammed in one room but was pleasantly surprised to have two bedrooms and a bathroom along a private corridor. Entrance hall and stairway are beautiful. Fab views from the bar. Reviews that say the rooms are a bit dated are fair but I think it's good for the price and location.
