We stayed in room 225, it was allround good, but its in ergent need of some venterlation and air-con. Due to the windows not opening, there was a fan in room but of no use it just cerculated hot air around the room.

The royal hotel was absolutely fantastic, clean hotel, clean room and everything you need. We even booked the facilities for a £6 each day pass which included gym, steam roo , sauna and pool which was brilliant ...

The only 2 niggles and they are only niggles was sauna wasn't hot just mildly warm and the pool was really really salty, not with chlorine but salt and tasted absolutely vile if you got it in your mouth and swim gear ended up being white as there was that much in the pool

On arrival my husband was given a door key card not the actual key that was actually needed. He was stuck outside the room on the second floor because had had all the luggage and didn't want to lug it back downstairs.
Room was very hot with no view but fortunately had a fan. Bed was comfortable and TV reception was very poor.
Best I can do was our stay was 2 star.🙂‍↕️

The hotel has lots of character and the evening entertainment was simple but enjoyable. Prices for drinks was a little pricy but what you would expect in a tourist place.

We had a bit of a challenge with the rooms booked into a room and it was already occupied when we walked in this happened twice then we finally found a room that was empty. The room was clean at first glance bed very comfortable. But the bathroom smelt of sewage and there was thick black water coming up through shower plughole when we ran any water which kind of ruined the stay. Also the cuos in the room where dirty and kettle needed a descaled on it. Other than that for a quick stay it was pleasant and a very nice view over to the harbour.

For what it was the room was adequate, but unfortunately the stay was unpleasant due to the heat in the room which was on floor 5. This was on a day that was only moderately warm. There was a fan but as the windows could only be opened a small amount it was impossible to cool leading to really poor night's sleep.

Stayed for one night and everything was fine. Location is good, near the tram to the beach, gardens and town. The public areas in the Hotel are nice and it has an impressive lobby area. The bar is good but we didn't use the restaurant so cannot comment. We had a twin room which was clean but the mattresses need replacing and need a choice of pillows. I think for the price it was adequate but maybe needs room investment.

Please avoid the hotel. The room and corridors were completely dirty and full of mould and smelt of damp.

Dead bugs, cobwebs, black mould and full of dust. And it looks like the electric safety for the alarm was overdue the compliance checks as the sticker started next test is due in 2024.

I spoke with the staff twice about the issues but was completely dismissed and they started they would send someone to attend the room to investigate and deep clean. When we returned their ‘Deep clean’ was to replace the towels - which when I decided I was going to take I shower I found the new towels had a brown stain on them.

I then returned to the staff at the front desk and they started they were sorry and would send a new person to clean the room for a second time.

When I returned yet again no cleaning just new towels. Dead bugs, cobwebs, mould and dust had not been touched.

I am extremely disappointed as I thought this was a well known chain.

Due to being out for most of the days I had no chance to actually complain more or ask for a refund as was there for a wedding and helping with the event.

I do not expect this standard when I paid around £600. I have photo evidence of all the claims I have made. I will be trying to contact the hotel etc to make a formal complaint as I believe I should be refunded as to be honest the room was unsafe.

Shocking hotel! The room was filthy and in a really bad state of repair. We refused to stay in the first room they gave us which was in the roof space. I don't understand how hotels are allowed to operate like this. If it was a restaurant they would be shut down by the foog hygiene agency. It ruined our weekend. I will be emailing the hotel directly with photos of the room. Would the owners stay in these rooms? I think not. Even the grand staircases are filthy.

We do love this hotel but this time we had a guest join us in the bar for a drink. He uses a disabled scooter; we realised how poor the hotel is for disabled guests - the lift was broken from outside so we had to fiddle ourselves to fix it. The disabled toilet is upstairs but the lifts said no scooters allowed. This is obviously a real problem for disabled guests.

Honestly, lovely hotel, great staff but needs a few tweaks.

Standard room = way below basic Room was terrible, like stepping back iinto 1980. Bed gave us sore back, room was boiling hot but they did provide a fan which helped blow the warm air around the room.
Shower cubicle tiny and did not have a shelf to hold my toiletries .
Without a doubt this is the worst room I have ever stayed in and will not return.

We booked the penthouse and on arrival paid the £197 immediately this was without breakfast. We got up to the room and it was ridiculously hot to the point you thought the heating was on full blast but wasn’t. We found one fan but it wasn’t enough we asked for a second and were told it’s one fan per room.

We had no complimentary water which I though was standard, so we had to buy 3 plastic bottles which coat £8.50. There was an empty fridge in the room and the windows were crawling with insects both inside the room and outside and in between as they had two sets of windows. The balcony doors safety latch didn’t work so our little one nearly got out on to the roof.

The room itself was filthy and too hot there is no air con at this hotel, the furniture was worn and broken. There was a light with no working bulb and other lights where you could see in to the loft with dust.

It’s about as far away from a penthouse that you could imagine. For £200 a night I expected much more but at least to be clean to a decent standard. I didn’t realise it was a Britannia hotel until after I had booked, if I had know I would not have gone near it with their reputation however the photos I looked at on hotels.com looked really good clean quality place but on actual visiting it’s not accurate so the photos are either false or have been doctored.

Extremely disappointed and a total waste of money the heat of the room was unbearable and we did not sleep much.

Best part of the Hotel the staff friendly and welcoming . Personally would never stay again . The building is grand unfortunately time and the owners have not been kind to it. Very dated and neglected in parts. Appreciate that it’s a budget hotel but come on owners update the facilities. Paid £17:95 for a one course meal in the buffet restaurant was not worth it my opinion. So did not stay for breakfast had at a local cafe instead.

I booked this hotel for a long weekend break with my family. Due to a genuine emergency, I was unable to check in on the day of arrival. I messaged the hotel through Expedia in advance to explain the situation — they acknowledged my message regarding parking, but completely ignored my notice that I would not be arriving that day.
When I arrived the following day, I was told my room had been given to someone else. The hotel had re-listed and re-sold my room without any notification or attempt to contact me. Despite showing up in person, I was refused a refund — meaning they effectively charged me twice for the same room while profiting from a new booking.
This is both deeply disappointing and, I believe, unfair practice. Neither Expedia nor the hotel took any responsibility for the situation. I will not be returning to this hotel, and I would strongly caution others to consider how either party handles issues before booking

Awful hotel - in a poor state of repaIr and everything is chargeable inc. the so-called pool (actually more like a paddle pool!), even towels at the pool are charged at £2/towel! No hotel parking - buy a permit from the hotel at £10/permit or park at a nearby NCP car park for £6.50/day. Rooms are very basic with awful.views other than the sea view rooms - basic furniture, some mould in bathrooms and some cracked ceilingbtiles. Only good thing is the English breakfast and location by the sea.

Room very dirty and when you asked a staff member about it they said they couldn’t do anything about it smelt like mould and walking throw the hall ways up to the room 129 it had black things all over sealing and blood all over the small bed where my little boy would of slept and the food was cold when you sat down to eat it and egg was like eating rubber and cups had black all down the side of it? It wasn’t the worth the money I paid for it £370 and the window in the bath room didn’t open and it was like a death trap the hall ways getting to the rooms and cob webs all over the ceiling hanging down over bed and curtain and if you wanted a sleep in you couldn’t because all you heard was delivers coming and for a view out the window was dirty blankets and pillows left out side!

Dirty walls, smashed door, ripped ceiling, tilted room especially the beds (our kid felt out of bed so tiled), black spots in bathroom, mismatched furniture, big gap under the door (10cm) and the chairs so dirty we where to disgusted to sit on it. The stairwell smelled of chlorine and the hallway was broken in may places. Also the grand entrance where on the ceiling the paint is falling off only held by spiderwebs. Mayor renovations needed!

This hotel was the worst one I have ever stayed in, I expect that it's an Old building, but the overall state of repair is shocking, when you exit the elevator to any floor you see white flakes of paint and wood at every opening, this I deduced was the wood work of the doorway, which was being battered by the wheeled baskets ,that is used for transporting the bed clothes and other parafenalia to and from the rooms, the windows were ill fitting and drafty the door was as if the norm was to prise it open with a screwdriver. The management should prioritise inspecting the place and ensuring that Old doesn't have to mean TATTY.

For an older property, you will expect some flaws and these are generally minor overall. The entrance, stairs and communal areas are well presented, were clean and smelled clean. The room we were in (203) was in a good condition overall, but was showing its age in some places. The windows are painted closed, but are single glazed, so transmit all outside noise. The curtains do not fully block out of the exterior hotel lights (which are on all the time from what I could see) The rail in the wardrobe was on the floor of the wardrobe as an ironing board and desk fan had been stored in there. The bedding was clean, but there were blood stains on the actual pillow itself. A great hotel for its location and price point however. Have stayed here previously and would stay again.

Gorgeous hotel, I will definitely stay again. My children and I enjoyed being here. The bar/lounge is great as is the impressive reception. Really good food and service from staff. For the price we paid, this was excellent! The hotel is stunning when you walk in, the rooms were nicely decorated, if a little grubby but we weren’t expecting 5*. The beds were really comfy. I’m not sure what the rooms would be like in summer as there was no heating or air conditioning and windows didn’t open much.
The bars ares were excellent too!
Staff were really nice, didn’t seem the best trained in hospitality, which surprised me for a Britannia Hotel but still, we weren’t put off - maybe some staff had called in sick and they were covering?
We’d definitely return.

The room was spacious and clean, though the bed was tilted due to the floor so my other half didn’t get a great night sleep as felt like he was about to fall out of bed. The bathroom though dated was clean, however would have liked to have had the small bottles of shower gel / hair shampoo that was advertised in the room description, instead had 3 small pieces of wrapped soap but we went to the local shop and bought what we needed . The breakfast was really tasty however it would have been more perfect if it was warm. Cold egg and bacon on Saturday morning, it was still tasty so didn’t ruin it. We really enjoyed the entertainment in the lounge though was confusing when each time we bought the same drink the price varied by a couple of pounds at a time. The male staff were really nice however the female blonde receptionist could have smiled at least once, felt like it was a chore giving us the directions of where to park. I know she would have had to tell everyone that walks through the door which can I appreciate be tedious, however if you’re in customer service you need to at least pretend you want to be there. Apart from that, we had a really good stay and would definitely recommend

Absolute filth 🙈 Wouldnt recommend staying here at all and will never stay again. Complained about the state of our room (bed dirty, damp and the kettle with black bits inside) took over an hour for someone to go up and sort what they could. Was told there was no other rooms however when looking online there was rooms. Spoke to multiple other guests who had the same and had moved to 1 - 3 different rooms. Cleaners want sacking. They make it look tidy but dont actually clean. Entertainment was 30mins long and that was your lot. 🙈 all the floors are slanted and not level. Needs a massive renovation to be honest. First hotel i have ever been to where the receptionist doesnt asks how your stay was or says they hope you enjoyed your stay, which says it all to me.

The entry and main hall was just beautiful, I even took pictures so beautiful it was. I would not mind the room was old, u could see where the water was leaked in, but crumbs on the floor everywhere even hallway and smushed mirror and cobweb on the sealing, no thank u. Chair dirty from some coffee or milk spill didn’t leave good impression. Again, didn’t mind old fashion room, I very much liked it but the dirt, that was shame for the hotel. As in room so in hallways.

When entering the hotel it looked great all decorated for Christmas but when we got to our room we couldn't of been more disappointed, the dust in the room was unbelievable, marks all over the furniture, the radiators were thick with muck the lights were so dusty in cobwebs , dirty single glazed windows, we didn't even bother using the bathroom apart from the loo, told the kids to keep their shoes on, they did offer us another room but it wasn't much better, slept badly because of this as felt uncomfortable, I will not be going back unfortunately as it's great location to the beach, the staff were friendly also just cleanliness

We booked two nights there with breakfast included, and paid . According to the sheet the hotel gave us, breakfast was served from 7:30 AM to 10:00 AM. However, on the second day, when we went for breakfast at 9:30 AM, they told us breakfast ended at 9 and didn’t even allow us to take a coffee, even though there was no note on the sheet indicating that breakfast would be served only until 9 when the hotel is quiet, so that we would know. Since I had booked the hotel, I was very embarrassed in front of my partner, unfortunately.Also, they didn’t come to clean our room; they only gave us towels, and we had to make the bed ourselves. The coffee maker didn’t work either.But the room was spacious and nice, and had a good view, and also the water pressure and the bathtub were excellent.and the staff were polite.

Although the room on the 5th floor was spacious, we felt like we were in an attic!
Good view from the window but we couldn't see it much due to the single bed placed under the window.
The bed wasn't that comfy although spacious but the sheets weren't long enough and kept sliding down from the pillows.

The hotel is splendid downstairs and was very festive but the bedrooms need updating as do the en suites.

We found the man who gave us our room robe pleasant but apart from a cleaner, we had no conversation with anyone. On leaving the hotel we handed in the key and there was a quick thank you.
I wouldn't return as i found it expensive for the room. They desperately need to update upstairs.

A beautiful hotel situated in an excellent location but in need of lots of tender loving care. We booked a double room and ended up with a family room on the back. Having stopped before this was a disappointment. The light in the bathroom was intermittent the toilet seat wouldn’t stop up and the tap was stiff and hard to get water. The room needed a deep clean. Apparently it is a dog friendly hotel and our room definitely smelt of animal on asking due to allergies the only rooms that our dog free are the suites and luxury rooms. I don’t object to animals at all but if you have an allergy you need the assurance. This time we booked room only so we cannot comment on food or other facilities. The staff on the whole were very friendly with the exception of one member of reception despite being very efficient she had no people skills which could be perceived as being rude. As stated earlier the building itself is beautiful with its sweeping staircase and in its time must have been the ultimate place to stay. Such a shame this hotel could have a lot of potential.

We had a lovely stay, was upgraded to sea view due to there been a room available. It was a lovely spacious room, the Christmas decorations are beautiful this time of year. Nice bar area. Only thing i missed this year was the Christmas Coctails, they didnt seem to do any. I feel they were nice treat before. But otherwise we really enjoyed it all. Including the pool gym and sauna area. Room was cold told reception which they sorted it quick. Tv didn’t work NOT sorted. No toiletries shampoo shower gel nut got sorted as we went to reception and picked up.
Over all not too good.
Had an evening meal that was very disappointing, we were the last sitting at 19:00 and hardly any foood left just pickings. Told one of the girls serving that there was no custard for the little bit of crumble I’d found and she said sorry you’ll just have to have cream instead.
Very very disappointed:(

The checkin could have been more informative and friendlier - it normally is. More advice could have been provided re the temporary parking restrictions outside and, in particular, help should have been provided as to how to get to our room, as the lift wasn't working. Fortunately a chambermaid was very helpful and showed us and another man to our rooms. Other than that the staff were extremely helpful as usual.

Smelly bathroom which made the whole room smell.
Window was missing a latch so it wouldn’t shut meaning it was noisy and very cold.
No shampoo shower gel or conditioner.
No coffee sachets.
Sticky dirty spoon left in the cup.
Marks/stains on the walls and curtains.
Reception staff in the morning didn’t seem too interested or surprised. Room 422a is terrible.
The whole floor around that room is very cold.
We were advised that evening they were very busy and had no other rooms.

Hotel was good , however there were no food options when we enquired we had had a busy day arrived at hotel checked in freshened up went down to order food and we were told that no food was available, we then had to go out in the Rain and find suitable place to eat
Apparently we were told we should have booked our evening meal , there was no mention of this anywhere in the booking process not did reception tell us when we arrived, would definitely not stay here again

The room was an ok size, as was the bathroom, however the beds (in a twin room) were not comfortable and the pillow was hard - so all in all it made for a not very good night's sleep. It would be helpful for each bed to have two pillows, which might have helped a bit.
