I have been traveling the world for over 50 years, and one of my deepest concerns has been the gradual erasure of charm from hotels. Modern standardization has stripped many places of their individuality, replacing history and character with sterile, interchangeable rooms. When I travel, I make a conscious effort to stay in hotels that honor their heritage and allow me to feel connected to the city’s past, rather than those rushing to conform to a modern, uniform aesthetic.

With that philosophy in mind—and without restricting myself by budget—I chose to stay at the Petit Palais Amélie in Milan, fully aware that a historic property may not be “perfect” in the conventional sense, nor in every physical detail relative to its price point. I was fortunate to visit during the week before Christmas, when both the hotel and the city were filled with a warm, festive ambiance.

The reviews I read beforehand were, by and large, very accurate. For my wife and me, our stay was deeply meaningful—personal, warm, and genuinely delightful. The hotel’s small staff creates an intimate, welcoming atmosphere that makes guests feel truly cared for. Its location allows for easy walking access to all major sights, and the history of the building is extraordinary, having once sat along a canal that disappeared nearly a century ago.

I was not disappointed in any way. Our stay was truly delightful and embodied the very definition of a hotel de charme—something increasingly rare and deeply appreciated

Excellent staff and lovely room. Lots of thoughtful amenities in the room. Sadly the boiler wasn’t working when we stayed and therefore we had to leave early due to no hot water for showering, hence rating for comfort. Hotel staff refunded the stay and were apologetic. I’d stay again when all working.

Beautiful hotel. Superb location. Friendly and helpful staff. Comfortable rooms. The only minus is the noise from the street. We got used to it after a while and it also helped that we were really tired at the end of the day. But a little soundproofing on the windows would help a lot.

We loved our stay! This is the most charming hotel we’ve stayed at in Italy. The building has a lot of history and the interior is very beautiful. We stayed at the junior suite and it was very spacious. The highlight of our stay was the staff! Everyone was very friendly and helpful. They were available 24/7 and assisted us with everything— including storing our luggages and getting us a taxi to the airport. My only comment is it is near the tram line which can be busy and loud at some times. Otherwise we had a great experience.

The staff. Everyone who works at Petit goes far and above their duty to help you. Their dining recommendations were excellent. They were just so helpful. The hotel is walking distance from the Duomo, or you can catch a tram. Can’t recommend the Petit Palais more. Definitely will be our go to place in Milan

The staff is very nice and helpful. The property has charm but is old and more like a 3 star hotel. We had bugs in the closets, and barely any water pressure in the shower, AC was non existent. The biggest challenge is the noise. Ambulances go by all day and night to a nearby hospital and the streetcar creates a small earthquake every time it rumbles by, it feels like there is a train running through the lobby. I appreciate the staff however this would not be a return destination for us

Excellent concierge services from staff assisting with last minute reservations on Thursday and Friday nights. We were very happy with the restaurant recommendations. Very friendly. The folks running the property are very kind and accommodating. However, the hotel is on a busy street that gets quite loud. The wifi here is essentially non-functioning at 1Mbps. Do not expect to stream or make calls - even simple websites take a long time to load. There are also no window screens in a mosquito town.

This was last minute emergency accommodation chosen due to its location to Australian consulate. Bed was very comfortable. Staff very helpful and friendly. Didn't expect breakfast delivery which was a substantial meal - just small Continental. Would prefer to dine in a breakfast area to meet fellow hotel guests. Although hotel was apparently quite full, I saw no one other than staff. Guest have separate spaces to go to. Great location for Duomo, cafes and restaurants 15 - 20 mins walk.

My husband and I booked a 6 night stay at the Petit Palais de Charme for our first time in Milan.
We stayed in a deluxe double room which was perfect. The hotel was not serving a buffet breakfast in a dining room so instead, they served us a large spread by room service each morning.
Our room was quiet with the windows shut and as the building is older you can hear the occasional creak or water from a neighboring room but nothing that disturbed us (and I am a very light sleeper)
What really set our stay apart was the front office agent, Elena. She was so incredibly welcoming and helpful. My husband and I are learning Italian and the time she took speaking with us was a highlight to each day. She was a wealth of information on Milan and its history. She also went above and beyond researching interesting things for us to explore around the city. She recommend some of the best restaurants we dined at. All activities and places we would not have otherwise found.
We highly recommend it.

Dirty, old and kind of hot

The rooms were really old fashioned, which would have been fine, but the reason that they were old fashioned is that the actual furniture and everything in the room has been in there a really really long time. The upholstered headboard had sweat stains from decades of guests' heads, the walls had stains, overall just really not clean.
Also, we were there in July and the air conditioner barely worked.
The people at the hotel were really nice though.

I stayed in the top floor, suite 19 and it was incredible, furnished with period pieces and very nicely put together. An additional surprise was a large balcony with a table and chairs, plants and flowers and a beautiful view. In addition, the hotel is clean and up to date ( an old converted convent with a USB connection for night time charging right next to the bed!). There was nothing I needed and every little detail was attended to. In addition, all of the staff here were so helpful and attentive. The included continental breakfast was a beautiful selection of breads, croissant, fruit, eggs, coffee and juice - a generous meal for sure, delivered each morning to my room! I couldn’t recon this hotel more highly. Also very close (10-15 min walk) to the Duomo and the Navigli areas.

Of all the boutique hotels in Europe I have stayed this one is the best! I had a suite on the top floor. The suite was larger than most small apartments. I enjoyed the hot tub, the private terrace, and the breakfast served in my room every morning at exactly 8AM. The suite and the whole hotel is tasteful in its decor, giving an authentic and elegant Old World style to the restored interior. Check in was a breeze, the location is perfect (Duomo is a ten minute walk North), and the staff (especially the charming gentleman who presided over check in during the day) are very friendly and extremely helpful. With no reservations I recommend this hotel wholeheartedly. I already booked another stay. And best of all, the price is so very reasonable.

Lovely hotel in a nice central location

Nice quaint older hotel and has modern features such as great WiFi and Sky TV. Fab room, although the shower cube could have been a little larger and the shower head really needed replacing. Breakfast was OK but sadly the aircon was switched off, hence was quite a warm room. Good location though and we certainly stop here again.

The hotel is on a corner of two very busy streets.
The noise in the room all night was horrible. The air conditioning don't exist. The room was very warm and of complete discomfort.

The hotel could be charming but instead it is very rundown and desperate need of renovation. Insulation is poor and the sound of plumbing and waterworks in adjoining rooms is not a pleasant wake-up call. The staircase is dirty and dusty and the less used wardrobes in the rooms are musty.
The in room safe did not work as the battery was flat. When the night receptionist was advised he continued to lay back in his chair with legs splayed showing absolutely no interest.

Lovely boutique hotel, loved it.

What a lovely hotel, we felt well looked after by reception (thank you Gian Mario!) as well as the restaurant staff. We requested a double bed instead of having two beds together and this was accommodated right away. The room as big with plenty of storage. We also enjoyed the tea and coffee making facility. It is within 10 minutes walk from the Dome square.

Maybe I had too high expectation but the hotel was overall a bit disappointing. The service in general was average and at breakfast was not very nice (they started packing away food while we were still having breakfast at 10). Breakfast was ok but not great (cut fruit not so fresh for example). The valet parking that was offered at the arrival was then not available when leaving the Hotel and we were informed only when leaving. Having kids and many bags this added time to checkout and inconvenience to the process of leaving the Hotel. PArking in front of the Hotel to pack and unpack the car is a bit inconvenient giving there is no actual parking to do so and you hae to stop on the road.

Think twice about the room before booking

Hotel control the temp. Size of shower in jardin suite is very small. Garden is shared and is a smoking area-no privacy. Breakfast fruit needs to be fresher. Not sure what's going on with the bar that isn't a bar. Didn't see common area coffee or tea. Would not stay again.

The location is within a 10 minute walk from Domou and in a reasonable nighborhood. The parking is an issue since you have to leave it with the hotel staff and require half an hour before it can be arranged back in addition to a €30 overnite charge.

Fantastic hotel, perfectly in line with its name.

Best surprise ever! I stayed only one night, but this was by far the nicest 4 start hotel I've stayed at. Very classical hotel from the 16th century with only a few rooms. Alessia the receptionist was extremely friendly and helpful and made sure I was really comfortable. The breakfast buffet was really luxurious with fresh pre-cut fruits and fresh squeezed orange juice. I would absolutely recommend this gem to anyone looking for a place to stay in Milan.

The Hotel is a nice place , clean and with all the amenities but definitely not a 4 Star property and the room is spacious , towards the road. Its a bit noisy all night with ambulance sounds on the road. The breafast at the restaurant is not that great but should be good if you dont like much options. The restaurant is a bit cramped. The hotel staff are very friendly and attentive. I feel it would have been a bit more spacious and the breakfast should have few more inclusions.Overall experience was good.

It really IS charming

As the rather clumsy name suggests, this is a charming hotel, within a 15-30 minute walk of many Milan historic sites. Not in the restaurant area, so if you're a foodie who wants to be within a block or so of a good meal, look elsewhere; but if a historic building with furnishings and artwork to match is what you're after, this could be the place.

Wonderful Boutique hotel centrally located

This is a wonderful boutique hotel which is appointed with charming decor and centrally located. The amenities were wonderful and the accommodations were extremely comfortable. The staff was was gracious and helpful. I would recommend to anyone.

Nice location

I pay for valet parking, but I have to park by myself when I arrive around 8:30. Expcept this, everything is good; walkable to bar and downtown.

Distinctive small hotel with all the comforts. Not your standard chain but all the better for that. Keen staff. Not much in the immediate area but good secure parking within 6 minutes walk. 10-15 mins from Duomo but only 10 mins from Porta Ticinese and the canalside restaurants.

Room is too small for the amount of furniture in it. Difficult to move around. We needed to purchase a voltage adapter even though other hotels provided them as part of their service.

We highly recommend this charming hotel

We had a wonderful stay. The hotel is truly charming and romantic with pretty period decor and style. We loved our room which was quite comfortable. Luca and Gian, the two concierge,were very friendly and helpful and gave us excellent restaurant advice for each night of our stay. The hotel is is in walking distance to the center of the city. it is very conveniently located to all the major sites and fashion center.

Superb

This boutique hotel (around 20 rooms) is located within 7min walking distance from Duomo. A lot of nice restaurants around. Gorgeous palatial decor and all the amenities in the room that one may require. Personnel was very attentive. All the dining suggestions for the restaurants the front desk person gave us, were just perfect. We enjoyed everything about this trip and definitely know where to stay next time in Milan.
