Hotel is in a great location and nice outdoor space (if you like terrace not garden) and has very nice staff. However the decor is very dated and in need of modernisation to meet the 5 star standard it claims. The bathroom in particular was from the eighties and room had no modern amenities such as latest power points

Excellent Hotel

I have travelled most of the globe for business and personal reasons. In all my years of travelling, this is the most honest and respected hotel I have come across. I booked 2 rooms, in an unforeseen circumstance, I was unable to use the second room even thou I paid for it and was non-refundable. Despite this, the hotel understood my personal reasons and fully refunded me £1200. What other hotel would do this without incurring a penalty. The staff are so nice and respectful. I wish this hotel and the staff all the success. Gob Bless you all. Thank you.

A Little Piece of paradise

We were greeted at reception by Leonardo, who was exceptional and really took care of us.
Melani was also of great assistance during our stay.
We however found that some of the pool and breakfast staff members lacked experience.

We stayed in a premium room with golf/sea views. The room was luxurious and the views from the small balcony were simply wonderful
The super king sized bed was so comfy. Water and tea/coffee were replenished on a twice daily basis

Breakfast at the Kamal restaurant overlooking the outdoor pool with panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean was just wonderful
The selection of food was fresh, varied and of a very high standard. A choice of eggs was also available to order. Breakfast was available from 7-10.30 which was great

The choice & standard of food at the pool bar was good.

There were plenty of sun beds available at the pool area and a good supply of towels.
Parts of the pool decking were unsafe.
The pool was great though a little chilly . Definitely not for the faint hearted.

The hotel lobby, bar and restaurant have all been renovated and are beautiful but there are parts of the hotel that need updating.
There was no entertainment in the hotel bar and
There’s also no gym.

The hotels location is fantastic being next to the Praca and a stones throw from the beach.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay

The little extras could move this hotel up to the next level

The first room option was very dated and we had to change rooms. It was ok but also very dated for the price. The reception staff were not very helpful initially but the manager stepped in to offer an alternative solution. Check in wasn’t ready at 3pm as stated either.
The newer areas are more modern and I’m surprised that the whole hotel hasn’t been renovated. Bfast was good and the hotel bar is nice but lacks any ambience.

The hotel is in a good area but some of the local bars/restaurants are a little obnoxious with bouncers being very aggressive.

Rooms clean but show curtain and shower run off taps, roulette whilst showering incase a scolding burst of hot water came your way.

Staff were very friendly but not very efficient. They failed to book our golf lesson on the first day, despite confirming by email that they had. Service was very slow in the restaurant and staff failed to inform us that several of the limited meat choices were not available at dinner, until 20 minutes after sitting down. Only one of the two restaurants was open and we were not informed about this is advance. While the rooms were clean, there were regular problems with bad smells from the drains and our key cards kept failing and had to be re-programmed.

The hotel is lovely with a touch of grace and in a great position for acces to the beach and restaurants in Praca

The staff are friendly and helpful throughout

Our only frustration would be the complex air conditioning in the bedrooms which is a small issue in the entire scheme of things

Booked the room due to the room rate, however upon arrival realised the hotel was pretty isolated and needed to catch expensive cabs to other locations.
Restaurant options were pretty limited and quality of food fell short.

We’ve been coming here for around 15 years and it is sad to see the hotel”s decline and listen to others complaining around the pool and say they are not coming back anymore, which sadly I have to agree with.

We had a Premium room as always but I think the complaints about the classic rooms are fair.

In all these years of coming here we’ve never once been given an upgrade so it’s pretty annoying to hear them being given to others every time we come. We came for our 20th anniversary, we didn’t even get a card!

The pool area is massively in decline. Heating from the 1st Sept is virtually non existent as it’s set to 27, this is not enough to claim you have a heated pool, complained during our visit twice but no change in temperature made and therefore rendered the pool unusable for me and many others.

The pool was rebuilt about 8 years ago it’s not been maintained. It has lots of black mould and grime.

The boards by the pool area are broken and dangerous, many older people walking around lose their balance when one of the boards collapses under foot. This should be a constantly maintained area and it’s not. Maintenance was allocated to painting the yellow stripes on the hotel to blue instead.

The pool area is filthy. The same rubbish sat on the floor all week, tables don’t get wiped and glasses lay rolling. Not enough staff apparently!

To hear the staff asking if you want to leave a tip for
Reception when you check out is dreadful!

Very much a golfers hotel so expect groups of males.

Lovely hotel in Vale do Lobo

Another lovely stay at this hotel. Wonderful view from our balcony. Superb breakfast with very friendly staff and fantastic view across the pool to the sea. Concession on the beach is perfect too. Looking forward to our next stay.

My mother and I flew to Faro from Dublin in what could be her last foreign holiday. The hotel honoured our request for a walking shower, which we were very grateful for. The majority of the staff from porters, cleaners, pool attendants, bar staff and restaurant staff were exceptionally welcoming, friendly and professional. They were given gratuities throughout the stay. At check-out the receptionist requested a tip; this was in front of my mother and was extremely embarrassing. We did leave a small tip after the third request for it. Please do not place this review online.

Heated pool very pleasantly warm - important in April. My room on the top (5th) floor had a beautiful sea and golf course view (though have heard rooms on 1st floor - under the swimming pool - were pretty grim). Great breakfast. Excellent location - 100m from the beach. Only things I had to fault were magnetic room key access - lock mechanism clearly needed replacing (tech came twice but didn’t resolve the issue) - which meant I had to go back down to reception to get a new card almost every time I went back to the room. Also - telephone did notconnect to reception/ guest services. Other than these mi or issues, a wonderful stay. Will return.

Really liked this hotel, visited out of season (February) so it was quiet, peaceful and with great service and a beautiful setting by the sea/beach. If I was nit picking I’d say that it’s a shame the pool wasn’t warmer and that it was a shame there were no spa facilities on site and included in stay, eg sauna / jacuzzi. Also the tennis courts looked shabby. Most people are here for the golf however which doesn’t disappoint although be aware there is no shuttle bus to the local course (vale do lobo) which is a 5–10 min (walk with golf bag) and the shuttle bus to the other two courses nearby isn’t regular. Most people seem to hire a car so maybe not enough call for it.
Finally, out of season the food options locally are limited , an excellent restaurant in the hotel and only one restaurant open within walking distance by the beach.

Nice hotel with easy beach access.

A nice hotel, typically expensive, but understaffed, particularly around the pool and it’s part of the beach, which meant too much rubbish left by sunbeds (beach and pool) and around the pool itself. The pool was oddly warm (heated!), which offered no relief from the heat. The rooms, however, were very nice and well proportioned. The breakfast offering was good, with a chef offering eggs and omelettes made to order. The massage I had at the spa was not good.
This hotel is under recent new ownership, and a nominal refurb, and it feels as though service is being reduced to maximise profits. Overall, a nice stay, though, and so convenient for access to the beach.

The entrance and communal areas of the hotel are sumptuous and plush in decor , however, although kept spotlessly clean, the room we had was very tired and old fashioned, and in need of upgrading. It was very spacious though, but disappointing in comparison to the rest of the hotel. Breakfast was excellent and we are dinner there on our first night and it was freshly cooked and delicious. All staff were extremely friendly, courteous and very helpful. They are an asset to the establishment.

Hotel is in a fantastic location across the road from the praca & beach. Reception area is very impressive, the restaurant (for breakfast), was great, fantastic food choice. Classic rooms are tired, Premium rooms are spacious. Pool area, definitely in need of repairs & renovation, tennis courts in need of repairs. Debris/litter outside our balcony was never colllected. Be aware that the hotel does allow dogs, very annoying when you have one in the next room which continually barks. Overall fantastic location but definitely not 5 star standard.

Location is brilliant and they are in the middle of renovations. If you want a good room ask for a refurbished one. It is not a big bustling hotel. Check your bill. We were charged for food for the room next door. The outdoor pool is heated but the deck area is roasting hot to walk on. There are not enough sun beds and the English are up at 6 in the morning putting the towels on, clearing off and coming back after lunch. Not good at all. The hotel has an area on the beach so many had to go there. Would not be my first choice to return to this hotel but overall it was ok. We had a few struggles with problems as the staff would not budge and we found them to be dismissive.

The rooms of the hotel are very dated. The bed were two old spring mattresses pushed together, where half of mine you could feel it has had it’s fair share of usage. The pillows were also very old with hundreds of clumps of fluff balled up inside. They did prepare cribs for us, however the structure of the building is not family friendly, as the elevators only bring you to half levels, and you will need to carry the stroller up and down the stairs - also going to the restaurant and the pool. The gym is also offsite. Doesn’t deserve 5 stars in my honest opinion

The Dona Filipa Hotel is superbly located within walking distance of their beach area, well equipped and staffed.
The restaurant area is also but a short distance away as are the many golf courses of the Val do Lobo and Quinto do Lago area.
The staff are friendly, helpful and friendly!

Staff kept coming into the room everyday, starting with just after our checkin waking me up from a nap, even with the do not disturb sign on door.
Asked front desk to call a cab, they called a chauffeur that was double the price.

Nice hotel, but the lack of a gym or fitness centre is a problem. The least they could do is have an arrangement with a local facility.
Also, they supply one free bottle of water for your whole stay. There are no supermarkets nearby so you have to buy the water from the hotel - not cheap

Same in the restaurant However, the bar was regularly empty mainly because the prices are far to high. A Hendricks measure was being sold for the price of a bottle in the local store. Great location 3 mins walk from the beach. Staff were very helpful and always had a smile on their face.
Good breakfast with both outside and inside areas to sit.
We had a premier room, with sea view. Nice pool area and guests have a dedicated area on the beach for guests.

Booked for a week but had to leave after 2 days as hotel not able to honour the booking (full) in addition to which they charged more than the contracted Hotels.com price. Hotels.com impossible to contact. Hotel maintenance behind hand with main restaurant closed and only coffee shop open and they tried overcharging there also! 5 star hotels do not have showers over the bath with plastic curtains, no soap dish etc. All in all a disgrace.

The location of this hotel still remains one of my favourites. whilst current conditions are difficult, the hotel were doing their best, although slightly more order is required at breakfast, that needs a little rethink to stop everyone complaining about multiple queues that don’t work too well.
Pool heating was switched on, on the 1st sept, not sure why you cannot have it on in August, it would make for less cardiac moments and so much more enjoyable.
Another lovely stay though overall, thank you!

We enjoyed our stay at the Dona Filipa. The pool area is beautiful, though I imagine could get over-crowded in summer. Breakfast was great although service in the restaurant (in getting cutlery, hot drinks or having plates cleared) was quite hit and miss. Our room was large and comfortable but I would not say it is 5 star standard, overall a good four star hotel.

Great location. Facilities are clean, tidy and there is a nice family atmosphere where kids are made welcome in this hotel.

The hotels beach facilities are great - beds - towels - nice big umbrellas. (Great donoughts on offer from the local bakery and the hotel will deliver a nice sandwich to your sunbed if you are really chilling out.)

Super breakfast with a bit of something for everyone.

We have been last couple of years (with our now 6 year old) and it works very well for us - though I have often found different people judge things differently so if you are a complainer...I am sure you will find something to go at! :)

Plenty restaurants nearby in the lovely next door Praça and good evening entertainment like live singing, bouncy castle, crazy golf ... all done is a stylish way.

God willing we’ll be back - defo. a holiday for recharging the barriers. Thanks Dona Filipa - we had a great time.

What happened to the outdoor heated pool?

The main reason for booking the Dona Filipa was the advertised ‘all year round heated outdoor pool’, ‘the only one in the Algarve’. We were so disappointed to find it wasn’t heated. The charge for staying there was double what we had paid for another hotel for the previous 3 days (albeit 4 star) and would have met our needs. The breakfast was excellent and an evening meal taken at the pool side restaurant was very good. Again disappointed that the Duan Duarte restaurant wasn't open as we’d planned to eat there, told that this was due to it being too hot at this time of year. I’m inclined to think this was to avoid the costs of keeping it open as well as the main restaurant by the pool. Our standard room was very nice with an excellent turn down service, but not yet refurbished as other rooms. In the short term, before refurbishment, I think the beds could at least be replaced as it was not comfortable (too hard for me) and creaky whenever I moved. So mixed feelings about the hotel but the lack of a heated outdoor pool is the only real but crucial point for us, being a showstopper to rebooking.

Fantastic Hotel

The room, the service, the breakfast, the restaurants, the bar, the cocktails, the swimming pool, the beach, where do I stop. Our cleaner Dossalina was the best and most friendly maid we have encountered and we have travelled! The barmen (mixologists) were fantastic. All the people on reception were superb and were there to help and serve att all times. Been before and will be going again, see you soon hopefully Dona Filipa :)

The Hotel don't know how to market themselves. We would love to have eaten in the restaurant on a couple of nights but there was no atmosphere.

Slightly soulless with lots of large groups of golfers. No sound proofing in the rooms and could do with more staff around the pool area.

Very clean though and good breakfasts.

The reception was quite impressive although the member of staff wasn’t very clear in explaining facilities etc.
We found the staff unfriendly and not at all helpful. I made a request for tea making facilities in the room, as these were not provided. The person who took the order said she would pass it on to housekeeping, the kettle etc. never materialised. When I complained on checking out the receptionist said I should have followed it up. I thought this was a very unprofessional remark from a member of staff in a 5* hotel. I don’t know if it was because they weren’t all that busy but staff were very laid back and inattentive.

Position in val do lobo is excellent. Not in my opinion 5 star. BBQ buffet very poor especially as it cost 40 euros each (no wine). Buffet breakfast good. Staff excellent although it was disappointing that manager was not at cocktail party.
