Set just outside Guildford in the heart of the outstandingly beautiful Surrey Hills, yet only 55 minutes from central London and close to the M25, this charming historical hotel is located in idyllic surroundings and is near to many attractions. The location makes it ideal for guests to visit many attractions in the immediate area or slightly further afield in Dorking or Guildford.

The family-friendly business hotel is minutes away from the village of Dorking and England's largest vineyard, Denbies. Guests will find restaurant and bars in the immediate vicinity, shops 13 km away in Guildford, and Gomshall railway station 4.

3 km away. Nearby places of interest include Polesden Lacey (14 km), RHS Garden Wisley (22 km), Clandon Park (10 km) and Thorpe Park (27 km away).

London Gatwick Airport is approximately 30 km from the historical hotel and London Heathrow Airport is around 50 km away. Originally built in 1920 on the site of 2 cottages so the locals 'had somewhere to buy beer', the hotel takes its name from the whortleberries or 'hurts' which grow locally in the village on nearby Pitch Hill, the site of one of the village's scenic walks.

Renovated in 2009, the hotel offers 21 guest rooms and facilities include a restaurant, bar and pub, a lobby with cloakroom, conference facilities and a car park. For an additional fee, guests may also take advantage of the room and laundry services.

Had a great stay atvyhe Hurtwood. Found it by chance. Great village with plenty of walking direct in to the Surrey Hills as directed by the lovely lady who checked us in. Room very comfortable with fresh milk provided. We found the car park easy for a big car, but would not be so easy in season I think. Dinner in the bar was excellent and good portions. Breakfast cooked to order also great. Will go again. Thank you.

Our room at the top of the Hotel was quiet, clean, very comfortable, lovely views, great shower …. One of the best we have had in a hotel!

Breakfast was really good! and part of the price of staying which was a bargain !

The hotel is tucked away in a cute little village and very scenic… would look lovely in summer!
For us it was a really good find and we would highly recommend!

We arrived about 6pm. We went through from the bar area to the hotel section and we’re very warmly greeted, given all the info and made to feel very welcome. The room was cosy and had good views out. The decor and particularly the bathroom needed a bit of TLC. It all worked but needed the odd bit of paint here and there and maybe new carpets in the halls. Breakfast was fantastic! Overall very good and great for the below average last minute price we paid. The location is stunning!

The hotel is let down by the worn and dingy pale colored carpet leading to the bedrooms and the way that the cooked breakfast is presented. Tinned mushrooms and over salted watery scrambled eggs really have no business being served at any level, sorry.

We would go back

We were very comfortable in this hotel. Check-in was friendly, and the room was comfortable with a Tassimo machine providing good coffee. Breakfast menu was excellent and quite extensive in its choice. Village itself was pretty. We ate decent pub grub in the restaurant too.

Firstly I would say do not attempt to arrive at the hotel in the dark.
The country lanes are unlit, full of potholes and for an American feel like a single lane sidewalk.
The hotel has a secure gated car park at the rear which is not sign posted
Our room was very clean, wonderfully warm which was appreciated as it was 32f outside.
Breakfast was excellent, a sofa and tv area to have coffee, tables to have a choice of cereals, fruits, juices and hot food….GO FOR THE FRIED BREAKFAST IT WAS MASSIVE!

Great last minute booking

Hotel was a bit difficult to find in the dark but we had a lovely room and having the private car park in the back was a bonus as not sure we would have managed in such a popular place. Staff very friendly we were even shown to our room not just shoved a key in our hand and given room number. Breakfast was excellent and we were given a great choice

Beautiful Inn with great attention to detail.

We stayed here for two nights for a family wedding close by. The venue is beautiful. Decorated in a family style with a lovely room which was spacious enough. My children loved the Jacuzzi bath! The village is beautiful. If I had to think of a bad side, the cyclists did make some noise in the morning, but it wasn’t really intrusive. I’d stay here again!

Wotton House: Aside from the extraordinary gardens, our house too has its own unexpected story to tell. We were home to the Canadian Army during the Second World War and in 1947 it became a fire training centre for The Home Office.

Soon afterwards, the house became the national Fire Service College. Today, our house is a home from home; a place where you will create unforgettable memories that will stay with you long after you leave.

We are proud of our rich history, which makes us so unique. The Estate dates back to the 16th Century, when it was sold by Henry Owen to the Evelyn family.

John Evelyn, one of three sons of Richard Evelyn, was passionate about botanicals and arboriculture and was particularly spellbound by the Italian Renaissance gardens he had seen on his tour of Italy. Inspired by what he had discovered on his travels, on his return to Wotton he constructed an Italian garden and temple, designed by his cousin, Captain George Evelyn, which was soon joined by a parterre garden complete with an Italian fountain.

The Gardens As you wander through our 13 acres of garden, you'll discover corners of English eccentricity that have become synonymous with the Wotton Estate. Ours was the first Italian garden in England, completed in 1652, adorned with Roman temples and original mosaics.

The gardens have been deemed worthy of protection and are unusually, individually Grade II listed. Built for intrigue, discover their mystical nature that is fit for any romantic explorer.
