This company evidently controls many units in this building, and I can only speak about my unit - which may be better than some of the others. Inside my unit was very clean and everything looked new. Everything worked very well - especially good A/C and shower - Wifi good. There was a refrigerator and hot water dispenser outside the unit in the hallway - small room - no room inside for them anyway. It was exactly as in the picture - with a nice window and view and all. The two young ladies on the staff were always smiling and asking if anything was needed. The 16 story apartment building is old and the elevators are small and at times crowded - but not a big problem. The MTR train is a couple short blocks away. The area is good - lively and safe. Not really 24 hour reception when I arrived. I was not carrying a local cell phone. Luckily, security was able to contact someone to let me in at midnight. The only complaint really was other guests who make noise and slam doors late at night - management cannot control these inconsiderates. Overall a very good stay - thank you.

I booked Ah Shen because a friend of mine recommended it, saying it's clean. For this price, I didn't expect much. Location is extremely convenient for eateries, shopping and public transportation. However, they posted a commitment sheet inside the room, claiming that if guests stay there for more than four days, they will clean the room and change towels. We stayed for 10 days, and none of these have been implemented. We even have to ask to get a new garbage bag for our room. It's better if they don't make such a claim.

Don't stay here. There are plenty of other places in the same price bracket. Awful place to stay and over priced for what it is. Had a twin room and there were some sort of midges crawling around on top of the other bed. These are flats converted into tiny rooms. No windows. Seriously look either.

The check in was very easy. The ac in our original room was not working, so the receptionist transferred us to another room and set up the ac for us. All of the staffs are very accommodating and speaks English. Their front desk is also 24hours so its fine that we checked in very late. They also offer concierge service for free.

Nice little budget hostel, close to everything

If you're looking for budget accommodation in Hong Kong, check out Ah Shan hostel in Mongkok area. It's very convenient, close to a lot of small cafes, Ladies' market, sneaker street, gold fish market, etc. It's right smack in the middle of everything and the MTR is only a few minutes away. The unit is clean, staff are friendly, good enough wifi. They provide soap and shampoo, but towels are not free. Checkin and checkout was a breeze. Overall, it was a wonderful stay.

Location was good but the hostel is very old and many things not in working conditions. We booked 2 rooms and 1 of it the air conditioning was not working and had no window and my friend couldn’t sleep the whole night as was told that they have no other room available. The mattress in my room have a weird sound at slightest movement n the blanket n sheets looked like they been working used for years. Toilet door handle was demaged n not replaced and opening from inside was a challenged.

The hostel is a series of little rooms located within a very old building. First, you'll need to get up to their reception on the 14th floor. Check in was quick. The reception will ask you if you need towels and toothbrush. Then will bring you to the room which could be anywhere in the building. You'll walk pass other residents' laundry in the corridor til you get to your hostel. You'll enter that door and within that door, you'll see several rooms. Your should be one of them. Drinking water is usually in the common area. Walls are thin so you might hear the other guests. Rooms are decent - not smelly. Bathroom is tiny. Usually, the room has nothing else other than a little table and your bed. Yes, it's got aircon.

Overall, it's OK.

* The beds are with bed bugs.
* When we request to fix the faulty lightning in toilet, it has to be 1 day after only can fix, caused me and my
room mate brushed teeth in a dark condition
* Can't sleep well along our stay at night, because room next door is a room which there is a balcony and
the guests staying next door went out to balcony chatting with thier room mates whole night caused very
noisy and which thier room's balcony exactly our room's window. And those rooms door 'bang' very loud
when the guests closed thier room's door including our room's door.

The old lady boss is rude. Our room door has spoiled in the second day morning, but we are rushing for tour. We get to tell the lady boss in the second night. But she scolded us for late inform but the door lock has changed by the boss without informing us and get into our room! Also there is no toilet tissue provided at all. However there are 2 friendly staffs in the hotel.

it's inside the city, near to train station. However, there is extra charges for towel usage, water dispenser is spoiled, we do not have hot water to cook instant noodles. Also, the door lock is spoiled on the second day. We rushing for tour so did not inform in the morning. We come back at night the owner has changed the door lock without informing and the lady boss is very rude. However, the hotel staff is friendly.

A family of 14 members booked 4 rooms with this budget hotel. All rooms were found with bed bugs and we were bitten too. The counter staff's attitude was not very helpful and friendly. They changed the room once for us but when we complained again, they got fed up. Other than this, the room is quite small. Overall, we got what we paid for for room condition. The location is quite near to the Mongkok MTR station exit D2. This is a plus point.

Close to every traveler's necessities - March 2017

We like the hostel's proximity to the MRT, restaurants, bakeries and especially starbucks :) No far walking. We go downstairs and everything we need are there. The room is decent and the hot water is abundant plus it is soft water ... nice feeling to the skin after shower. Air conditioning is good. We did not have any complaints at all except for the outside appearance of the hostel which will make you think twice but once inside the hostel it was okay. There was hot and cold water for drinking outside our room. Owner and staff are very attentive to customer's needs. We will go back to this hostel if traveling to hong kong.

We checked in at the 14th floor and got a room on the 8th. The twin room with private bathroom was big enough for two, as long as you don't expect to be able to swing a cat in it. Our backpacks fit under the bed, there's a TV, AC, hanger and a small desk. The bathroom is narrow but deep enough not to have to stand on the toilet while showering. In the corridor outside there's hot and cold drinking water and a communal fridge where you can put your food and drinks. Towels must be rented for 10HKD each/stay. There's two entrances into the building. One closes at 11.45 PM and you will have to go to the one on Fa Yuan Street. The staff in the reception speaks English and are all very nice. Elevators are small and slow so expect to be waiting a while. Had a lizard and four semi-large bugs but none of them stayed for long. I will definitely stay here next time I'm in Hong Kong.

Ah Shan Hostel only 2 mins walk from Mongkok MTR station. The room is small but cleanliness & comfort of the bed is above average.

The downside is we stayed 8 nights. We can only connect their wifi in our room on the 1st nite (which is supposed to be provided in our room). From 2nd nite onwards, either no wifi can be connected (either in our room or lobby area) or sometimes we only can get the wifi connected at their lobby. So this is the most disappointed part of our stay.

Location was just nice if wanted to be near to MTR (Mongkok). So this Ah Shan Hostel was located near to this station(3mins walk). Accommodation - don't expect too much - overall - still acceptable but please bring your own toiletries and towel, unless you ok to pay HKD10 for the towel.

The hostel is great in term of location, but the overall condition of the building is not good, too old building and the lift is slow. Extremely small room as expected, bedsheet is clean but we stayed for 6 nights the bedsheet and blanket never change. The daily room cleaning is not up to expectation. toilet is untouch.

Highly recommend this place. However, would be nice if they can introduce keyless system as they only provide with 1 key.

Typical Kowloon Accommodation

To sleep somewhere is convenient. This is what AnShan Hostel supplies.
Rooms and Beds are well suited for this purpose.
Just dont expect, this means more.
As there is an aircon, its possible to sleep at night, yet after the water heater pump has stopped in the early afternoon.
The staff is proper for Kowloon circumstances. In other circumstances, in general hospitality terms, its helpful, just not enjoying anything about their work. Hongkong Kowloon style politeness, just not as entertaining as Fawlty Towers. But this is nothing AnShun differs from all other options to stay in the low rate Kowloon places or Chungking Mansion.

The hostel has a great location with affordable prices. It's near everything I need when I go to Hong Kong: convenience stores, grocery stores, 24-hour fast food and a Starbucks to boot! Laundries are near by too. The free wifi makes it even more attractive than nice hotels in the area! Clean and safe with friendly staff.

This is not a luxury hotel, but a hostel that is clean with free WiFi and in a super-convenient location for all the errands I run when I come to Hong Kong. It's very close to the subway and train lines as well as close to the bus stop for the airport bus. It's very close to McDonald's and Starbucks and lots of Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, etc. restaurants as well as several shopping malls. Super-nice staff.

Maps of public transit and points of interest clearly posted in their office, deposits ($100 HKD) required for borrowing hair dryers and extra keys, and colored strings provided to mark your luggage if you need office storage (monitored by staff and security cameras). The hallway has a water cooler with a hot water function. Bring cups, toothbrushes, toothpaste, waterproof slippers (the ones they provide are dirty), and towels. Soap, shampoo, and toilet paper are provided. English is not an issue here. Room walls are thick, but the door is not so please stop screaming in your rooms, we can hear you and the person on your phone.

Rooms are as clean as the photos show them to be (cleaned at the end of your stay), and the beds are high up so you can store luggage underneath for more than enough walking space. The beds themselves are just shy of 6 feet long, so keep in mind tall people will have their feet sticking out.

Bathrooms come with their own electric storage hot water tank, so the water is hot when showering. I would actually recommend using more cold water to shower to not burn yourself due to the tank's effectiveness. At full boil (when the tank finishes heating), I tested the hot water and can assure you two people can take their time and still have hot water remaining (at least an hour assuming you don't shower in scalding hot water).

Overall recommended. Location is decent, rooms are clean, and staff knows what they're doing.

POOR SERVICES vs Good Location

Its a definite 'NO' if I should consider staying at this Ah Shan hostel again in the future!

Having booked few months earlier before my actual stay in late Dec 2015, I even called up Hotels.com staff to assist in ensuring that my stay here was confirmed for triple sharing by a family of 3. Both Hotels.com and even the staff at Ah Shan Hostel confirmed that its a double deck bunk bed + 1 single bed reserved for us, as already paid during online bookings.

However, during our check-in on Dec 25th, I was informed by a Ah Ying at the Reception desk that 'they were running full house' and only a small miserable room WITHOUT WINDOWS were allocated to us??!! After much argument, Ah Ying asked a young girl to show us a room on a lower floor with a tiny window, and we accepted much to our disgust, as there were no rooms left! And that young girl who showed us that room, was totally sulky looking and handed us our key with much displeasure!!

The Management need to educate their staff on proper courtesy extended to their hotel guests, otherwise, they can be guaranteed with more negative feedbacks!

Some improvement will definitely help.

Door secondary lock was broken and not fixed. We have to request for towel and staff with the name Yolanda was not helpful nor friendly. The toilet door lock was broken and the toilet door was full with algae and mold. Other than that, it was near to MTR and airport bus A21 as well as Ladies Market. We are unable to get longer sleep as there is renovation and drilling work right above our unit.

It is our third time to stay at As Shan hostel....we went back and stayed at As Shan again because of it's proximity to places of interests, comfort and cleanliness of the room....the room is really small but still , it provides comfort and good stay for its' guests...the staff and desk officer are also nice....the only problem I guess that we commonly encounter here is the crowded and slow elevator.
For tourists like us with limited budget....As Shan Hostel is indeed a good place to stay.

Good location, No frills!

What we like most of this hostel is its location. It centered in one of the most bustling neighbourhood in HK. Accessible to almost all the best local chain restaurant. And best of all, this area located near MTR and have direct link from/to the airport. If I were to pick a complaint, it would be the lift which seems to be always pack (maybe it is HK afterall) and long waiting time. At times, we need to climb the stairs to get to the hotel office.

Very small room with very small attached bathroom. Total space roughly 12x8 feet. No window so bit dark and dreary. TV only local channels which included English news and movies only at night. Good Wifi access in room. Very good security main locked door and seperate locks for individual door of course, and security cameras in outer areas. However cost about 50% higher than other comparable places and ad pictures not very accurate, thought was much better for the price I paid. Overall ok, and staff very good and helpful, but can find better price if not service, if walk around Chungking Mansion area, if no major event taking place.

I stayed here as part of my trip to Hong Kong. Let me start off my saying the pictures are a little deceptive. The nice room with the mirrors that looks pretty nice; I asked about that room when I arrived there is only one of that room. do not book here if you are expecting that room, you likely wont get it and will be disappointed.

Deluxe rooms are rooms with a window. the rest are very small closets. I was told that the rooms typically share bathrooms and a nice room would have an attached bathroom. mine had an attached bathroom. I didnt care though cause my motto is a hotel is where you sleep not where you live. the hotel has 2 elevators one of wich is active 24 hours. the elevators only go down once you are upstairs. the hotel is located pleasantly close to the MTR station, and it is directly across from Ladies Street market.

They take a high emphasis on cleanliness, there was bed-sheets and a pillow provided and there was no bed bugs. that's really all i needed. bring an adapter for the power or buy one from the desk at 10HKD. The TV has 3 channels and only 1 in English.

They are very knowledgeable at the front desk and can give you some idea about things to do. try Mankee Snacks right outside the hostel building in the evening for some safe, inexpensive and tasty food!

More for backpackers than couples

Very difficult to locate building and then Ah Shan reception on first visit after dark. Very limited English on part of front counter staff so unable to assist with directions etc. Small bedroom fit for purpose but bathroom, particularly shower where user had virtually to sit or stand on toilet to use, below standard even for a 'budget' hostel.

Good location

Check in was fast, even if we arrived a bit earlier. Location is good with a handful of food joints around the building. The room is small, typical of HK hostels, I appreciate being given room with window. There's a mall nearby - Langham MALL - if you want to shop for high end shops.

Small but sufficient

The only problem I had was finding the place. It is not conspicuous. If you go out subway station MongKok Exit D2 and walk just a little ways, you can see a store on the corner with a green sign, selling electronics and Apple products. To the left of that is Sincere house on a small sign over a non-descript entryway. (Also next to the green store is a Crocodile store.)

The room was small, barely enough room to walk from the door to the bathroom, then its a small squeeze in the bathroom. However everything was ok- bed, sheets, pillows, hot water, TV, flushing toilet, AC, a shower, soap dispenser, and even some hangars!

Strategic place

Very near to mongkok station, walking distance to the airport bus stop. This is just a sleep and go place. They offer cheap disneyland ticket. Not the 499hk dollar. Check it there!! Btw. Ladies market is across the street.

Good Points:
(1) Great location in Mongkok! It is very near Sneaker St and Ladies Market. From MTR Mongkok Station, take exit D2.
(2) Wifi is very fast!
(3) Filipina assistant is very kind as well as the Chinese owners. They let us leave our bags in the reception area after checking out so we can still do some shopping.

Bad Point
(1) It wasn't what I expected. It doesn't look like the photo shown in the site. It was just a small room inside a residential unit. You had to pass through their kitchen/sala to go to your room.

Conveniently located but small

Stayed in a single room for the first night. There was a smell in the room as there was no window. I changed to a double room with windows for the next two days and I was satisfied. Location wise is great as it is walking distance from Ladies Market and just a 3 min walk to Mongkok MTR station. You can take A21 bus from the airport and it'll take about 35 min. Overall, I would recommend this place if you want convenience and don't mind a small space.

Dont stay here! such a rip off!

Some of the hotel staff were very, very rude! On our first night they put us in the wrong room and then charged us a ridiculous amount afterwards even though we werent aware we were in the wrong room. We had a 5 day stay and they wouldnt change the towels for us during that. The hostel is split on different floors of the building so we had no desk to ask about the mrt etc so as far as im concerned the hostel had no services. Couldnt even dress properly in the bathroom because it was so small. For the price we paid we expected much better service and a higher standard of room! Would never recommend this hostel. We met some of the rudest people ever here.

Phone Booth for the NIght

This place is what it is. A tiny hostel like hotel with a cabinet room and combination toilet, sink, shower room. It was clean enough and the AC worked well, but the TV was non-functional. The Wi-Fi was fine.

If you've never stayed in one of these types of hotels, you need to be prepared. The rooms are slightly larger than the bed, and the shower is the same room that has the toilet and sink.

You also have to be prepared for uneven elevator service and an inability to enter and leave with ease during the wee hours.

What can you say, though? It was clean enough and served me well for one night.
