This hotel is a gem. It is a renovated and repurposed magical old building with a beautiful fountain in the middle and a courtyard bedroom layout all facing a lovely garden. It’s tranquil, charming and extremely well updated. Great for a price. We regret that we didn’t get the daily breakfast. So if it’s an option, we highly recommend grabbing it.
Located in a terrific part of the city surrounding colonial’s most magical features and close to the ocean

Nice inn in the historic center, well decorated but the room had a worn-out mattress so I slept very badly. I made the complaint at reception they didn't even apologize. The breakfast is correct, in a place with a nice view and with good Nespresso coffee.

A super cool property, amazing history. Most of the staff were incredibly hospitable. Great vegan recommendations. A couple at the front desk were less friendly and awkward. For example, I asked about the property's history and the woman didn't like talking to me about it and actually texted her boss while we were talking who came over and made up an excuse for her to leave, lied and said that he was her husband, all of that so she wouldn't have to talk to me about the history of the hotel. It was awkward. But the other staff members are so nice that it made up for it. And the building is super cool and the whole street that it's on is amazing. You can take pictures forever

A little slice of peace and quiet away from all the hustle and bustle of the busy tourist areas. We enjoyed the tranquil courtyard with the trickling fountain and the exceptionally good breakfast and view from the dining room. The hotel has great little hideaways for reading or writing and the outside garden is lush and sunny.

This hotel is located in a very old building in Colonia. The location is fabulous. Being an old historic building you have the old windows that let in all the noise from outside, and the room smelled quite musty. But it was a beautiful place; breakfast was continental, nothing special- but sufficient to start the day.

It could've been a perfect stay!

Posada Plaza Mayor is a charming boutique hotel nestled in the heart of Colonia del Sacramento’s historic old town. With just 14 rooms, it offers an intimate and peaceful stay, perfect for those looking to soak in the town’s colonial charm.

From the moment we arrived, the reception was warm and welcoming, and check-in was handled smoothly and efficiently. Our room was beautiful—serene, spotless, and well-appointed, with a comfortable bed and thoughtful amenities that made for a relaxing stay.

However, two things took away from what could have been a perfect experience. First, the receptionist recommended Charco Bistró (their sister restaurant) and assured us she would make a reservation, but unfortunately, that never happened. Second, the hotel charges $3 per Nespresso capsule—a detail I only noticed after using one. At first glance, the capsules appeared complimentary, making the charge feel unnecessary and, frankly, insulting for a hotel of this caliber. Small charges like this can leave a bad impression, especially when they feel excessive.

Breakfast consisted of a selection of baked goods, juices, and coffee. It wasn’t anything remarkable, but it was enough to start the day.

Overall, Posada Plaza Mayor is a beautiful place to stay, but a bit more attention to service and guest experience would make it truly exceptional.

Decoded to come to Colonia for an overnight trip from Buenos Aires and so glad we did!! Quaint hotel that has rooms around a gorgeous central courtyard and efficient use of space. Bathrooms we clean and gorgeously created from a historic building. Rooms were ready early by a few hours. Continental breakfast was good with a second story view of the river. Also guests get a discount at their sister hotel
on the river

My stay at Posada Plaza Mayor was absolutely lovely! It looked exactly as on their website and on Hotels.com, which is how I booked. I visited Colonia from Buenos Aires, where I’m staying for several weeks. I know that many people do Colonia as a daytrip from BA, but I’m so glad that I chose to spend the night. Posada Plaza Mayor takes you back in time to help you really feel the history of Colonia. They have done a wonderful job in updating the hotel to make it modern, while keeping many elements of the original building for its charm. The bathroom is totally modern. Great toiletries. The breakfast was upstairs with a view of the river.

Wonderful hotel in a charming Posanda, right in the centre of the old town. Room was beautiful, comfortable bed, well equipped bathroom. Would have been 5* all round had it not been for the slightly lacking breakfast. A hotel of this quality and cost should have had a better choice of breakfast, it doesn’t cost much to have a choice of eggs etc, also would have been nice to know there was a couple of lounge areas which we don’t about. Other than that the staff were incredibly helpful and polite. Just choice of restaurants within walking distance.

A-MAZ-ING. Unfortunately, we only stayed for one night. I could easily have stayed 2-3 nights. The room is on the small size, but comfortable, quiet, clean and beautiful. The hotel is beautiful and the staff were so friendly. We walked ten blocks from the ferry terminal (about 1km) and easily found the hotel. Many food options nearby. We had a lovely lunch at Bohemia and delcious Mexican food for dinner at a small shop!

Nothing in the Barrio Historico is more than around 3 blocks away from this well-maintained and serviced place. And staying overnight in Colonia is a different experience that visiting as part of a day trip from Montevideo or BA. Staying two (or more) nights lets you experience the daytime life and the quiet, relaxing evening. Don’t get bored, get relaxed.

As for the Posada Plaza Mayor, it is walking distance from the ferry and bus terminals but, dragging a suitcase over the cobblestone streets and some gravel may not be the highlight of your trip; a taxi was 150-200 Uruguayan pesos.

Most of the rooms are off a shaded interior courtyard, which adds to the feeling of being in a different time. Staff is friendly and helpful. I traveled alone and stayed 3 nights in Room 4, which was comfortable for me but would probably be a squeeze for two. Other rooms I able to see inside while housekeeping was at work, unlike 4, have enough room for a chair; I had just the window seat.

With that caveat, I recommend staying at Posada Plaza Mayor, not just visiting Colonia del Sacramento for a day.

This hotel is the perfect little spot. Service was fantastic. value was great. Breakfast was perfect and they were able to provide eggs for me as well as gluten free options. The bikes they provided needed some TLC but it was nice of them to offer. They also helped us hire a cab to get us back to the ferry vs walking. Very nice of them.

The property and location is fine. At the upper end of the market compared to other hotels around the area, but we wanted excellent.

Our stay was nice, although breakfast bare minimum and disappointing.

After checking out and going to the ferry we received a call that we had used one of the single-use coffee pods in our room. Uh. Yeah?

We must replace it or they will charge us.

There’s a charge for the single-use coffee pods IN THE ROOM?

Pretty awful way to treat customers. In-room coffee is a thing, not a for-fee adder.

Location is perfect for exploring the historic district and close to many nice restaurants. They have bikes to lend, but we didn’t use them. Our room was small, very pretty - but dark. As with many of these small boutique hotels, the electrical system could be more convenient. Need USB and more outlets easily accessible.

Lovely and Historical Hotel in the Heart of it All

A lovely and historic hotel right in the heart on old Colonia. Overall it's a really lovely boutique property; obviously steeped in history dating back to the 18th century, but also very modern in terms of amenities and design. Some infrastructural aspects of the property are probably in need a refresh. For example, our bath tub didn't drain very well and we had to use the provided space heater at night to keep the room warm because the heating function of the HVAC unit didn't seem to be operational. These are fairly minor inconveniences, however. At least they were very minor weighed against the general charm and appeal of the place. We didn't avail ourselves of the optional breakfast at this property's sister hotel across the square because it seemed a but overpriced. That was out choice, obviously, but it's sort of pity because if it was just a bit less expensive per person we probably would have, despite the short walk, and that certainly would have made our stay at this hotel feel even that much more special and luxurious.

Beautiful small courtyard with fountain and several blooming vines. Most rooms face the fountain so you sadly have to keep your door closed for privacy. But we had a very private room in the back garden. Great location, quiet, and one of the best beds I have ever slept in!
Cons. In the bath... really hard to find light switch ( across room and under hair dryer ) and very dark at night...needs a night light!. And shower head and mirror both too low and I am only six feet tall.

A pousada é linda, tudo muito limpo e a recepção foi muito solitica e nos ajudou até a chamar um táxi na hora de ir embora. Nos deixaram também guardar as malas até a hora de irmos.
O único problema que tive foi na hora de dormir, que senti um cheiro muito ruim que vinha de fora, parecia veneno. Durou alguns minutos. Acredito que devido a cidade ser muito antiga possa ter alguns problemas com insetos.
Mas fora esse pequeno problema, a estadia foi excelente, muito confortável!

O café-da-manhã deveria melhorar com certeza! Uma pousada com diária no custo de 700,00 em média, com uma café com
Itens prontos, sem café filtrado ou coado, apenas o de cápsula não combina com o preço! Quando quetionei se teriam ovos fritos ou outros itens quentes preparados, eles disseram que não tinham cozinha.

Também questionei sobre as bicicletas, pois no anúncio aqui do aplicativo havia o item de alguém de bicicletas. Lá na recepção, apenas disseram que não tinham o serviço. Mostrei no outro dia a outra pessoa da recepção, que se mostrou mais disposta a solucionar, mas ficou por isso mesmo. A tv não tinha os principais aplicativos de streaming.
